Dropped my Ping driver and now use a Ping 3, 5, and 7 along with a 9 wood. I do play a Mizuno 5h at 25 deg. to fill the space next to my short irons. Works for me and my back at 75+. 👍🇨🇦👨🦳
Thank you for an interesting video. You also received many worthwhile comments. As I am 80 years old I carry, 5, 7 , & 9 fairway woods & 5, 6 & 8 hybrids to give me better height & distance. I use all of the clubs & my irons start at 9 to lob wedge.
I like having both hybrids and woods in the bag. I keep hybrids instead of irons anyway. Various situations can call for one or the other. Great video . I enjoy your channel.
I’ve tried several Ping hybrids in my bag at different times and don’t like them at all. However I love my Ping fairway woods. Got a new G430 7 wood yesterday to replace my G400 which I can hit consistently so any improvement will be great. Occasionally use my G400 9 wood which I also hit well but it’s a bit close in loft to the 7. Longest iron I carry is a 5 these days. Used to use 1,2,3 and 4 irons but the fairway woods are much easier to hit (I’m nearly 70 and don’t get the club head speed I used to get in my 20s, surprisingly).
I'm just building my G430 bag.. Got irons from 45deg up to 6 iron, 7 wood and driver.. I use a cleveland 19deg hybrid as well which I will be replacing with a G430 soon..
I added a 9W MAX and its an amazing green stopper and straight as all get out. Stay away from SFT unless you have a massive out to in swing. It will only mess up a good delivery.
Generally, 4 hybrid will suit fast swing speeds and 7 wood will be better for slower swing speeds. As a rule, one should be looking to stop a ball not more than twenty yards maximum from carry.
I definitely prefer woods, I bought a ping 5fw to replace my 3w and a 7fw. My 5fw is on average carrying about 250yds, very similar to my previous 3w but it’s much easier to hit. I love the 7fw because of those near vertical landings. I play a couple courses with very rounded greens, if I land at a low angle it’s going to fly off the back 80% of the time, the 7w has just been deadly for holding greens.
I opted for the ping 7 wood for the softer approach that I couldn't get with a hybrid. When I needed the penitrating runner for more distance I delofted the 7 wood with shaft lean. I can get both results with one club. I couldn't get both results with the hybrid and took it out of my bag.
i favor hybrids all around, i have no irons in my bag. As a beginner i found hitting hybrids were much easier than irons for me, so i just stuck with the hybrids throughout my golfing years. They work for me but definitly not for everyone. Love the game and enjoy everytime i can get out to play.
So in your initial review we chatted about this (7 wood vs 4. Hybrid) with my TSR2 7 wood vs TSI3 hybrid, the 7 wood won. But with Ping G430 I got the 4 (22°) hybrid because as you found, the hybrid is now a straight hitter and with the new carbon crown it flies higher, lands softer. So now I'll look at the G430 5 wood for the next gap
Was looking to do the same. Just bought the G430 Max 5W and was thinking about upgrading my 4H (Sim 2 Max) to the G430 Max. How are you liking it so far?
Thanks. A very interesting comparison as I’m just rebuilding my bag and was pondering this exact question. I’ll go for a fitting and see what comes out on top. Cheers.
As a slow swing speed player i would probably end up with the FW as i need the help with launch. Having said that I have hit the G430 5 hybrid just once and it went 8 yards further than the hybrid I had just bought (sigh). The G430 range with the alta quick shafts are great for slow speed golfers.
I am fond of both my hybrid and fairway wood. But I like my hybrid better on funky lies - and they are both vastly easier/more forgiving to use than long irons. Just added a 4H Stealth 2 to my bag to narrow my club gap. Find I'm missing 180-190 yd too often when trying to juice a 5 iron or grip down on my 3H.
I find as a mid handicapper that my 4 and 5 g430 hybrids are prone to go left, as they have toed in faces. I think the 7 wood is now an option I would go for, to replace the 4 hybrid, as the flight is straighter and a few yards less distance is an acceptable trade off in my opinion for consistently straighter shots.
Have Ping 430 5,7,9 woods (got a 410 driver I’m not using at present and a 3 wood I’ve put in the garage. For me the 5 is a much better option. . I’ve tried Ping hybrids over the years and just can’t hit them. The fairway woods are much better for me.
Both are great for what they are and the “choice” would be all depending on what you want to do with the ball, more spin and stick greens or less spin and hit further
Great comparison 👍 it would be interesting to see you compare the hybrid to the 4 iron as I have found a 4 hybrid to be more in line with a 3 iron for distance but as you say far more forgiving and easier to get away
I am older now, around 55yrs. I ended up going with the 3hybrid 19degree over fairway woods or other hybrids, I can't really get alot of distance anyways. Ofc, after I watch this , might wish I changed my mind.
Always worth testing. General rule of thumb but not always the same for everyone. Delivery of the club at impact can make a big difference. 👍🏻 Thanks for watching!
Results look like what you'd expect with a consistent swing like yours. A bit surprised at how short the 7w came up though. However, comments about the noise I don't think are typical of other brand fwy woods. Ping is always known to be the noisy one out of the bunch... thanks for the vid 👍🏻
I enjoyed the comparisons between the hybrid and fairway, BUT CAN YOU PROVIDE THE DISPERSION OF ALL SHOTS FOR EACH CLUB? To me, I am more interested in keeping a tighter pattern and playing more fairway shots with greater control.
63yo getting back to playing after hip and knee. Interested in the G430 iron, thing graphite a better choice, don't understand difference in the Standard G430 vs G430 HL and what may be a better choice for a aging golfer, higher handicap looking to get the ball in the air and enjoying the game.
@@TimElliottGolf Tom, feedback is much appreciated on that. I tried out the G430 7 iron with a regular graphite and the highest flex graphite I guess for seniors (not sure whats that called). I wasn't hitting balls cleanly but had ball speed approx 100mph. What shaft do you recommend I tryout with the G430 HL. Is there some light graphite shaft available. Assuming thats best for someone like me to get the best club speed, at my age and handicap situation - higher handicap. You feedback, much appreciated.
I am sure it is swing speed. But I prefer the seven wood. The seven wood for a shorter hitter is a scoring club into long par fours. The 4 hybrid will not hold the green.
It’s a fair point. If you deliberately are trying to change AoA at delivery you could change launch angle and then loft choice becomes a consideration but in theory if you deliver the same AoA with both clubs with same lofts, the head shape will make a difference. 👍🏻 But seeing as your ball position will vary from club to club, you are right! 👍🏻 Thanks for the comment!
I learned on the old Ping TISI Tech Titanium Woods (3, 5, and 7 and dropped the 7 for an iron). So I prefer the wood over the hybrid. I prefer the irons over the hybrids. The flatter face of the iron is better for my eye. I hit a G430 7 wood and liked it. Though I’d like just get the 3 and 5 wood.
I have both the Ping G410 7 wood and Ping 4 hybrid in my bag, and have suspected they both go about the same distance with my slow swing speed. I was under the impression that the 7 wood would be a replacement for my 3 hybrid not the 4. What do you think?
Nice review. I wonder what would happen if you played the 7 wood with the hybrid shaft? Better control, higher launch, but I wonder how much distance loss
Good question! Probably not alot other than an adjustment with the set up. Certainly would give perception of more control. Would have to test it! Thanks for the comment!
The sound of the G430 fairway is awful - they didn't address it at all and the carbon doesn't mute it. But the hybrids sound excellent. We tested the fairway (3w 15) outdoors on a. grass range and it's an embarrassing "clank" sound compared to offerings from TM, Titleist, Cobra, and Callaway which have a short hot snappy sound.
Your monitor probably shows descent angles, which were not put up. The 7 wood will clearly have a steeper descent angle, and the pros like Dustin Johnson and Fitzpatrick who use both 7 woods and 9 woods want that giant 8 iron type of trajectory and very steep descent angle so the ball will stop on a hole where they have to clear water or bunkers and land on a small, firm green. Obviously the high trajectory is more vulnerable to the wind, so if they are playing a links course with high winds, the pros will put a driving or 2 iron in the bag and hit low, running shots. So as you say, a lot depends on the type of course and holes you will be playing. A word of caution to those who might test these two clubs in a practice bay with launch monitor and screen. If the settings the establishment has used have the greens set at soft, a shot than lands on the green will stop quickly. But if you are comparing that club with another one, as in this case, and the second club flies higher but consistently lands a bit shorter, in the fairway just short of the green, it will run out further than if it had hit the green because the monitor settings will have the fairway as firmer than the green. You won't know unless you ask or do the settings yourself. This can give you an erroneous idea of the stopping capability of that second club versus the one that hits the green. They might both stop equally quickly if both hit the green, or the one with the higher, shorter trajectory may stop faster, as is the case with the 7 wood here.
Personally i dont like ping fairways, face too shallow and the sound, hybrid a good club though from ping, but im about to replace mine with a 7 wood from another brand.
Hi Tim i have a g430 driver, 5fw, 7fw and 4hy. Is it a mistake to carry the 4hy and 7w. Only put them in the bag because the 7w launches higher and may be beneficial to have a soft green landing
I have an issue of not hitting up on a driver which I'm trying to sort but also makes me not very consistent with woods, I seem to hit hybrids alot better as I'm hitting down like an iron, I'm considering replacing my 3 and 5 wood for a 2 and 4 hybrid, for someone who hits down would you say it's a wise move ? I'm getting about 190-205 carry on my old taylormade 3 rescue hybrid
@@TimElliottGolf thankyou for the feedback, I seem to launch a hybrid quite well, my current one is 18 or 19 degrees, I'm thinking a 17 degree 2 and a 22 4 might give me the gapping I need at the top end of the bag I guess I need to try them and see what the numbers say, I have some new irons coming I probably need to wait for them and see how far I hit the 5 iron to work out what I need after that but after today especially off the deck I was hitting hybrid better, I always thought I needed a traditional bag, driver 3w 5w ect but I think my swing just doesn't suit woods that well and I could gain yards and consistency somewhere else

Hi Tim recently bought g430 driver 5fw and 4hy and often contemplated putting a 7w in the g430 aswell. However after watching your video if i need to hit a higher shot into green i will need to play around with my ?ball position. Any advise on how to achieve a higher flight with a hy?
Thanks …. Just about to book a fitting and this has helped a lot. I’m wanting to replace my 5 wood with an 18* hybrid and you’ve helped confirm why ! 5 w is a nice club, got it fitted 3 years ago with a good shaft that suits me just fine. However the flight on the course is too high and spinny. The course I play is short so the 5 wood is not a green finder but more a fairway finder on short and tight p4. I’m hoping the strong hybrid will get me a bit further up the fairway especially into a breeze.
The Ping G430, 3 wood has a convex face. A less than experienced golfer will hit left and right if not very careful. The G430 hybrids a child could use. They’re very user friendly.
All woods have a roll and bulge face. Even hybrids to some extent. Designed to help create spin back towards the target even if the start line is left or right. Club face alignment at impact is the biggest factor for direction unless the mis-strike is severe. 👍🏻
I can’t speak for everyone but it’s just easier to get going consistently with good numbers and control hybrids I find are difficult to control and are extremely vulnerable to windy conditions
I’ve just purchased the g430 driver and 5 wood. Love both but the 5 wood is coming out quite flat at about 60ft peak height. My ball speed is 150-155 with the 5 wood. Any tips on hitting the fairway wood higher? Loving the videos btw!
@@TimElliottGolf thanks for the reply. I have been on a trackman and my angle of attack can be between -6 to -9. What drills would be good for this? I think this is why I struggle with long irons. My driver attack angle is also -4.
loft adjustment and higher launch softer / shaft. If you were fitted (not sure of course) you might have been offered adjustments like those to tune your flight better than off the rack?
@@willjohn7777 Yep, you’re hitting down on the ball. You need to setup with a different rotation. It’s about your setup, not the club. There are some TH-cam tutorials out there that explain this pretty well.
The benefits of a Hybrid exceed those of a 3 wood, as the Hybrid is multi-use, and you are only comparing on Fairways. I would keep the Hybrid all day.
It's hard to watch people who strike the ball well with good swing speed make these videos because the outcome is so different from the average player.
I agree the speed of swing will make a difference to overall height but the club head design of a FW to a hybrid will make a difference. Loft even more so. 👍🏻
True, but out the rough adds so many variables so you can’t compare with good data out the rough. General rule: rough lies will lower the spin rates. 👍🏻
Ok, so that is from perfect conditions in a sim. What about on the course, what about out of the rough, what about from tight lies, what about with wind or other conditions? What about in the real world?
Variables is part of playing on the course. I was interested in comparison without as many variables as possible. In course tests is something I want to do more though! Thanks for the comment! 😃👍🏻
Everyone should trying lofting up their woods. I struggle with iron compression but I'm long with woods so weakened mine to fill the gap. I'm 8° driver. 15° 3 wood, 20° 5 wood, 23° 4 hybrid and a 24° 5 iron. 177 5i, 190 4h, 205 5w, 235 3w but I can push the 4h and 5w another 20 yards when I need due to extra length and speed.

All woods have a roll and bulge face. Even hybrids to some extent. Designed to help create spin back towards the target even if the start line is left or right.
Club face alignment at impact is the biggest factor for direction unless the mis-strike is severe. 👍🏻
I always use fairways hybrids are extremely rare in my specs and I find them harder to hit
I can’t speak for everyone but it’s just easier to get going consistently with good numbers and control hybrids I find are difficult to control and are extremely vulnerable to windy conditions
I don’t want the runout because that is my favorite club to greens.
Verry surprise about the resolt
Glad it surprised and hope it helps! Thanks for watching!
I use the driver and hybrids- no woods- just an average golfer playing better now.
It’s a more and more frequent bag set up. 👍🏻 glad it’s working for you.

Yep, you’re hitting down on the ball.
If I may ask what is the foresight simulator you're running?
GCQuad on th floor with Forsight sports FSX Software. 👍🏻
Your chart comparison show 7w vs 3H, not the 4H that you were supposedly hitting.
Hybrids for xx out of rough originally? 🤷🏼♂️
Wish we could have seen height and descent angle. Nice vid though.
Next time! Thanks for the comment! 😁👌🏻
Woods go to high for me, even put 80 gram x stiff in woods, prefer hybrid or utility, I'm not even a big hitter
Deeper heads of woods launch it higher with the CG further back.
Hybrids generally always lower with the same lofts. 👍🏻
It's hard to watch people who strike the ball well with good swing speed make these videos because the outcome is so different from the average player.
I agree the speed of swing will make a difference to overall height but the club head design of a FW to a hybrid will make a difference.
Loft even more so. 👍🏻
Hybrid feels more versatile (in the rough much?).
It certainly gets through the rough easier than a Fw due to it being a narrower sole design. 👍🏻
@@TimElliottGolf thats wrong.
Can’t compare hitting on a mat with tve whole ball to hit. Compare in the rough!
Not bad advice. Loft can help a lot!
The Hybrid is more versatile , would you agree?
Arguably yes. Certainly for a mixture of lies and tee shots. 👍🏻
Shaft and ball choice will greatly affect these test results.
They ‘might’ make a small difference to most. But the head design and loft will make the biggest difference. 👍🏻
Fairway
Choose what’s best for you.
Thanks for the comment!
I will never use a hybrid ,wood all the way like cheating to me
