Just one nail up high so the flashing is loose allows the metal to bubble up when it gets hot.
You see it all over the place. On a hot day , look at a roof and most of the time you notice the area where step flshing is and its bubbled up. Thats due to not securing the step flashing correctly

Shingles are cut too tight to the wall (step flashing), should be a finger width away so the water can run off and not get trapped under the shingles..

Also is someone going to stucco over that or install counterflashing over the step leaving 1" gap between vertical step and 90° bend? There should absolutely be a water channel between shingle edge and 90° to avoid an area vulnerable ice damning and debris collecting.

Thanks we had an addition to house where the " installer cut corners often and FORGOT THE FLASHING SO WATER ENTERS WHENEVER HEAVY RAIN OR WET SNOW WHEN IT MELTS IN SPRING

Not overlapping the siding or stucco over the step flashing will cause the wall to leak it's the opposite of every other video on step flashing

Is the flashing attached to the side wall? What offers the wall protection? How is is made waterproof? What is to keep water from going down the wall and causing damage?

@@jasonward759 I just googled this, and it looks terrible. None of the houses near my have this stiff going up their 90* walls or chimneys, all looks clean... i must be missing something. I have a small area to do, with an 8' section that needs flashing, but I want it to math the rest of the house, where the flashing goes behind the siding. The rest of the roof is newer, and the flashing looks new as well, but no idea how they got it behind the walls. No evidence of siding removal, nails are still behind the paint...

Hi, how long does a brick and Mortor 30 pound felt roof underlayment last before it starts leaking when exposed to the elements because the spanish tiles broke? The roof is a spanish stile brick and Mortor original from 2004. Thanks.

If it was laid down with nails and washers (1" to 2" in diameter), it could last years. If it was just stapled, you are lucky if you get 6 months. I had a shed roof that never leaked a drop, but I just couldn't abide it. I tore off the framing, and laid a ridge down the center of the long axis. Since the rafters were 90° out, I used decking over the rafter chords, then erected rafters on a center beam I manufactured myself from the center out. I had the roof decking up, and 30lb felt nailed down, with roofing nails under 2 inch flat roofing disks; when the first hurricane hit on a roof pitch of 1 in 7. After that, I had 5 days to shore up the framing with blocking, when the second hurricane hit. With 14 inches of rain in just 2 weeks, which was about a years worth of rain, the felt had held up no problem. When I tore it off to put down the latest high speed roof wrap, the type II exposure OSB decking underneath looked like the day I had bought it at the building supply. I was pulling off perfectly good 30 lb felt (15 lb felt is trash before you begin to unroll it), just so I would feel better by putting up the high dollar stuff on my own work, on one of my own houses.

Do you recommend leaving the head wall flashing exposed or can you nail shingles over it with roof sealant? Also can I make headwall flashing with coil stock

    • @gafroofing
      @gafroofing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi, there. Shingles may be adhered over the headwall flashing using roof cement. However, it is not recommended to fasten them since they should be able to move with any deck and building movement. As far as coil stock goes, you should use a minimum of 24 guage.

  • @markcook2086

Apparently its ok to use slap staples?? I still believe in cap nails, and I always leave 1/2" gap between my metal and the shingles to allow for movement.

You put step flashing over the stucco, even if you add counter flashing, how do you deal with water being drained from the bottom of the stucco. Stucco has drain holes at bottom

I am installing flat roof flashing under shingles and over corrugated patio roof.
Seems most city codes require roof flashing to be 26 Gauge (0.019 inch).
But the flashing rolls sold at Home Depot are thinner.
    How do I resolve this?

All i ever see on these vids are weakpoints at the corners where you're cutting metal to fold round, and then plugging those weakpoints with sealant, does any manufacturing company produce a preformed corner, front or back apron? This would cut out the need for sealants at the weakpoints because the preformed corners would overlap them.

Incomplete, unhelpful video. Every commenter points out the flashing on stucco will leak. For the most part, the entire issue of correct roofing and correct flashing is a joke. Even most so-called professionals do not really understand correct procedures, and even fewer are willing to do the work it takes. The roofing industry is mostly about taking the lion's share of customer's money, then quickly move on to rip off the next customer. Warranties are a joke. When the roofer stops taking your calls, what do you do? Pay $15,000 retainer to a lawyer so you can commence a lawsuit? You lose more trying to go to court than you ever paid for the entire roof, no matter how expensive it was.
