    I think it looks great Bill! If you and Elizabeth love it and it does what YOU want it to do then that's all that matters. I think by custom making it you got all areas covered with what you want it to do. 👍😊💜

    Former Marine Vet here. Congrats on the cap. I have a Leer 180 mid rise I bought used off Craigslist in upstate NY on a return trip home from camping. I had it set in my mind I needed a cap and I looked and found it.
    It doesn’t fit perfect so I had to make a notch here and there and slip 3/4 PVC under it on the bed rails to lift it up. I don’t have a bed liner. From afar it looks good. Oh and my truck is black the cap is silver! Lol
    Your video was informative thanks for posting.

    I have this same exact cap on my 02 F150 Flareside. I did extensive fab work to get rid of that gap between the cap & truck cab. Started with both widows removed, the cap window (already removable like yours) and the cab rear window. I welded a channel to join/seal the cap/cab window area from the elements below. Its now like a tunnel between cap/truck cab. Then I proceeded the weld the cap & truck cab together from one side to the other which now looks like an Excursion sort of. Long story short....my kids can now either sit in the cab with me or crawl into the bed area where’s there’s an entertainment center & extra seats w/o having to get out of the truck cab & enter the truck bed from the rear tailgate. Sure, I couldve bought an Excursion but this 2002 F150 Flareside was bought new from my mother and now I inherited it since 2017 & have been enjoying the truck life ever since!

    Well done! Slowly, but surely, things are coming together for you. And for my husband and I as well. We bought an RV lot (we own the deeded lot) in a gated RV community that offers a pool, two boat ramps and a fishing pier on the shore of a premiere fishing lake in Texas. We're going to make it our home base. I think about your journey and say to myself, "We can do this!" Thank you, Bill and Elizabeth! Happy Trails from Texas.

    I bought a second hand Leer cap. I installed it by myself, with a come-along, ropes, tied across the front bed hold downs, and a lot of profanity. After it slipped off one side a couple times, I came up with the idea of using a long PVC pipe, to keep it from slipping off. It worked, and made it much easier to push forward, the pipe also acting as a roller. It took a long time, but I have no tractor and it is otherwise a four-man job. (BTW, there is a vid showing a cap had no effect on MPG; the streamlining only offset the extra weight of the shell---FYI).

    Great video review! Nice folks. I have a Leer also and love it. Bought it from a Leer factory store. Had to re-order it because the first one was weird fit on the bottom outside edges and would rub my paint. No questions asked by store. Also, you may have gotten ripped by the wiring install. Mine works with or without the truck lights on which is the only way it should be. They either ran a wire from the battery (not difficult) or there is a hot wire to the trailer hitch harness. The one used to trickle charge the trailer battery while driving down the road. Close by to the camper light too. Easy fix for you if you want to, even though they should have done it right the first time. Take care and happy trails!

    • @LiveSimpleLiveFree
      @LiveSimpleLiveFree  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They told me they could run a hot wire back to the light, but there would be an extra charge. I could do it myself, I just haven’t put a big priority on it. It seems to me that Leer has some quality control issues, but their warranty in fixing the problems is second to none! Had mine about 8 months now, and I love it!

    • @jgvtxman8659
      @jgvtxman8659 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I agree. It just sounded like you were complaining a bit about the wiring, so I thought I’d throw in my 2 cents worth. Take care.

    Looks very nice. Great that it matches so well with the truck. We also have an 8 ft bed in our truck and are finding it difficult to find a used cap to fit. If we got one that matched in color, it would be white with a hint of RUST color. (well, more than a 'hint')

    Nice set up you have there! I looked for over a year for my used cap. There's 100's of used cap/toppers where I'm at. All are over priced or so old they need everything from screens to struts. I found my used 2016 cap at 75% off. It's made for and fits my 2013 F150 perfectly. The colour is off a bit but i saved well over $1000!

    I have to compliment you folks who put out videos regarding your personal lives....I couldn’t never do it because of all the opinions solicited and unsolicited y’all receive....you know what they say about opinions....they’re like ......we all have one....I do have one suggestion though and you may already have? Ever considered getting a disabled tag/placard? I fought against getting mine for years and then went ahead and did it. Only thing is every darn disabled parking spot is full nearly every where I go....never knew so many disabled folks in the world....take care & God bless....hey...when do the invites go out for the camping trip? Wouldn’t that be a kicker if a 1000 folk showed up! Got enough hot dog buns?

    • @LiveSimpleLiveFree
      @LiveSimpleLiveFree  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We're not really expecting that it will be necessary for her to park in the disabled spots. This is only temporary. She is getting stronger everyday, and soon will be walking like a champ! If it continues, and she doesn't improve as much as we expect, then we would consider a disable placard.

    Congratulations! Bill if you want more ventilation at night take soft/foldable screening (ie the type used in screened tents) sew/glue Velcro around the screen, which you've cut lager than the removable window, and then using some type of weather resistant glue (maybe a glue made for boats) glue other side of Velcro to the area around the window frame with the window in place. You now have yourself a screen for when you take out your removable window, the screen would be easily stored because it's flexible so it can fold or roll. Also I would think you would need to stitch or glue an edging around the screen before you could stick Velcro to screening material. Never tried this but thought it might work.

    Very nice cap! It's so spacious in there now!
    Bill, you can buy an inflatable inner tube thing that goes between the two windows. We had one for our cap, it would keep that window cleaner.

    One of the best places to find used ones are large car lots. They remove them and literally put them on the back lots where they sit and sit. You can get them super cheap mine cost 50 bucks. It's a Leer it cost me 125 to get it custom painted to match the truck. It was less than 3 months old when it was removed from the original truck by the car lot. I use it quite often for short weekend trips.

    God bless you:
    I’m buying a new F150 next month with an extended cab (they call it SuperCab now) and an 8-foot bed. I’m going to make a truck camper out of it immediately.
    I’ve been leaning towards A.R.E., the MX series, which has the same slanted and taller roof as yours. Similar in price, but they have a rear door option for a grand more (so $3,500) where you remove your tailgate. That rear door looks as cool as all get out, but I’m still worried about losing the tailgate.

    The cap looks perfect and even like an original option, good thing it was too big where the cutting was needed and not too small. I'd have gone with custom made too even though pricey.
    You should get some significant drag reduction with that style cap, hopefully at least 10%. Does the truck have an overdrive feature, though you can't really use it when towing?
    Another thing that can give you better mileage is going up to slightly bigger tires, though it looks like yours are in good shape still. You can go up to a larger size by 5% without any problems, except for a minor change in speedometer display.
    EG, we went from 235/65r16 on our Jeep Cherokee to 245/70/r16, which was about a 5% increase, and the wider tire gave us more stability on turns. Tires just have to fit wheel wells and be steering/turning okay. Looks like you have room there.

    I just bought a used leer topper and once I installed it on my Tacoma, I sadly find that the topper sits too low and does not allow me to close my tailgate while the glass topper door is closed. I’m thinking about placing weatherstrip lining around the truck sides where the topper rests in order to raise it a bit. Any advice that you guys can give me would really help, as I’m new to all of this. Thanks!

    • @LiveSimpleLiveFree

      Mine is the same way. It's designed that way. I must open the topper glass door before I can open or close the tailgate. The topper door laps over the outside of the tailgate. That's what makes it water tight.

      Tinyhouse Prepper thanks for the advice! I didn’t know the glass must rest above the tailgate. What I can do is adjust the rings that the glass door latches on to. If I move that forward, I can perhaps get it to latch and lock above the tailgate.

    Nice looking truck, the customized cap will pay for itself in connivence.

    Thanks for the video, very helpful. The issue with the needed fiberglass cutting only confirms my opinion (after doing a lot of research) that the build quality of these toppers are a complete hit-or-miss, and that goes for all brands that I've been looking at. You have to hope for a good day at the factory the day your topper is made, which is crazy considering what these things cost.
    Your topper looks great on the truck, the color match is excellent, and I hope you two enjoy the extra dry room back there for years to come. Great video, thanks for sharing :)

    I get 14 mpg in my 2016 F-150 with a V-8, pulling a loaded, open landscape trailer. On 1,500 mile long trips I get over 21 mpg, but never thought about dropping the tailgate to increase that. The removable window and carpeted ceiling sound like really good upgrades. Glad you told about the interior light not working except when the parking lights are on. I just watched a video of a guy making his own truck camper and he said it turned his truck into a sail.

      If he made his own truck camper, it was probably not very aerodynamic.

      @@LiveSimpleLiveFree the channel of the guy who built the camper is called, Aging Wheels. And the camper shows up as that's his latest video.

      I was VERY surprised, when I bought this truck, that the gas mileage was so low. I get about 11-13 (without pulling a load), and I was expecting at least 18! All I know is that this cap does not blow me around like a sail, and it has increased my gas mileage.

      @@LiveSimpleLiveFree I have the 305v8, you probably have something bigger. I bought the V8 because my Vortec V-6 was struggling to pull a load. I'm thinking I want to travel and sleeping in my truck seems like the way to go, as hotel rates are getting ridiculous. And that's why I clicked on your Leer video. They have a model with a rear door I'm also looking into.

      Yup, I have an F250, 5.4L v8, 4x4 with a tow package. Which is great for towing our travel trailer, but doesn't do well with MPG!
