Do you guys have any experience with camper shells? If so who makes your favorite? Time stamp: 00:58 Overview 08:30 Comparison 10:35 Features you should buy
So far so good. Loved having it on my last backpacking trip kept everyone’s stuff secure. You can not lock it from the inside. Plan on putting an electronic lock on so I can lock it with my key fob.
Honestly I haven’t personally looked at the ranger. The people who I have talked to that have them seem to really like them. I’ll have to try and look more into it. Although you can’t go wrong with a Tacoma if you end up not liking it you will be able to sell it for close to what you bought it for.
No problem thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. That’s a bummer they don’t make shells for the ranger. I would imagine they have something in the works? I have never seen the RLD’s, did a quick search and they look pretty awesome I’ll have to look more into it. You are in the place I was like 2 years ago. Totally researching the truck you want I obsessed over it for like a year haha. The Tacoma was pricey but I did a lot of online quotes and got it for 6k under what they asked for at the dealer down the street from me. As far as the rear drums no issue so far. I haven’t taken it in any crazy Offroad trails but I had them on my keep and I didn’t have an issue. I will say the visibility takes some getting use to. I plan on installing a front camera to make it easier for those steep trails.
Leer customer service and quality control is terrible. I purchased the Leer 122 and the windows leaked and one side window would not latch. I called the truck shop who installed it and they didn't know how to fix it. Leer website contact section doesn't work. They never responded to my emails. I had the truck shop where I ordered the Leer camper top provide me with his Leer local sales rep. I called and informed him of the issue. The Leer sales rep even admitted the Leer web site contact email doesn't work. I had the Leer camper top shipped back to Leer manufacturing plant for repairs. They shipped it back and it still leaks! My camper top was purchased in June, 2020
Sorry to hear that, wish their customer service was better I called them a while back and was able to get through but not sure how they are operating now with COVID. Either way you would hope the contact form would work. Seems like a lot of these companies do not have great customer service. Hopefully you get it straightened out.
I had a Leer topper on my 1983 Ford Ranger back in the day . It was quality built , never had any issues with it , never leaked , and I actually sold it separately from the sale of the truck for $500 after 10 years of ownership. ( back in those days you get those things for a $1,000 -$1,200 , so I got half of my money back from it . Now I’m waiting for my 2022 Tacoma TRD Off Road Long Bed to arrive and I will definitely put another Leer topper on it .
I sell both, and SnugTop as well. Leer does a pretty good job. ARE seems to use cheaper parts, depending on the model of course, but I agree, I would have gone with the Leer 100XR. Their side vented windoors are different than what ARE and SnugTop uses, and I think they're much better. I also like the style of the Leer. I have sold quite a few of the exact shell you have here. Nice review-to anyone shopping, he lays it all out pretty well.
Thank you for your input. These are just my observations so coming from someone who has a perspective on all 3 major brands it’s good to hear. Thanks for watching!
What do you think about A.R.E. CX REVO? I like the slider in the middle of a window...im currently trying to decide leer or a.r.e for my ranger 5ft bed ...any suggestions?
@@ia6980 That glass that slides within the side glass is rather unique, but I'll tell you what I don't like about that top. Aside from ARE NOT using a fuse box or wiring harness, and they use the neoprene foam cap tape instead of a double bulb rubber base seal, the other thing I don't like about the Revo is the curved glass rear door. We've had a bunch of problems with it-doesn't seal right, doesn't open smooth, and the way they ground the 3rd brake light is crappy. None of those things you can see in pictures.
appreciate the insight @zizpop. Any idea if prices will come down anytime soon? currently and since the kung-flu, theyve been astronomical. Thx. I now have the Leer 180 on my radar for my silverado overland build
Prices coming down? Not likely. Leer is owned by a financial group, which owns SnugTop and many other aftermarket brands. ARE is way overpriced for the quality of what they produce in my opinion. I wouldn't expect prices to come down anytime soon. @@freidrichnietzsche6643
I second the side win-doors and especially if you use a hitch rack or cary anything behind the truck. Spent a week mountain biking with buddies and used side win-doors more than rear door to access gear.
I'm on my second Leer 180 shell. First was on a 2014 Tacoma. Fit and finish was a bit sloppy. Rear window/hatch needed to be adjusted but I did it myself to make sure it was done right. The carpeted headliner was thin and sloppy. Never a leak. Paint and finish were great.... no issue over 6 years. Just had a Leer 180 installed on my 2020 Tundra. It took 10 weeks for delivery.... I guess the virus thing held it up. Was back and forth with my local dealer as I had plans. I had the Thule roof rack factory installed (good suggestion.... didn't want to drill a brand new cap)... but they didn't ship the keys for the Thule locks on the bars.... still dealing with that.... as others have stated.... their customer service SUCKS! I also had the carpeted headliner installed (much thicker and better quality than the 2014 cap. Also had the front drop down slider window installed.... better air circulation.... and now I can clean the outside cab and cap windows! Well worth it....Overall the new cap is better than the 2014.... paint is a perfect match and they included a bottle of touch up paint. Fit and finish are pretty good... no leaks thus far. Total cost with all the options, installation, tax.... $2,900. ALWAYS check the LEER website... they have special offers for free or discounted accessories.... I got the drop down sliding window for free.... just had to tell the dealer and show him the Leer website. They won't tell you unless you ask.... and the freebies and discounts are a little tricky to find on their website. The dealer said I needed a code.... I showed him the website and he magically made it happen.... no CODE needed. Negotiate your price first.... then mention the free item you want to add to the cap.
Thanks for commenting, I need to make like a Q&A with all the good feedback people place on the videos. I liking having the input of people who have had the shells for a while and know some of the "tips and tricks". Kind of a bummer their customer service is so poor. I guess because they don't have a lot of competitors they don't really care about customer service. That is one thing I think I forgot to mention was the website incentives when I bought my shell they were doing the rebate, But definitely negotiate first. Thanks again for your comment.
Thanks for doing this video. I am in the process of ordering a shell for a 2022 Tacoma. This was really helpful in understanding the quality of a Leer cap and knowing the most important features to include.
I had a Leer and went to a A.R.E for my Sierra. The fiberglass was a little wavy on the Leer I had. I found the color match to be perfect from both companies.
I have to agree. The leer fiberglass has a lot more wavy lined in it on my 23 superduty as unposed to me 16superduty ARE cap. Color match both were very good
Awesome glad I can help. If you have any questions let me know I will try and answer it to the best of my ability. I did a ton of research when trying to buy a shell so just let me know.
Just ordered my 2nd A.R.E canopy today. The CX classic series I ordered. Never had Leer but would definitely try one out someday. A.R.E holds more weight on the top for storage then Leer.
I think it would. I would contact the manufacturer. If you are not going to use a track system it might put more wear on the fiberglass and cause it to crack.
I had a leer topper on my f350, when it broke i bought a sheet of 1/8 inch polycarbonate and cut it to fit the opening. It is lighter and unbreakable. I now have a gladiator and have a topper ordered.
I bought leer over ARE for my 19 TRD. Thought the ARE looked cleaner but could not justify the 800+dollars. I definitely do not regret going with leer as they are literally built by the same company and look fine. I do regret spending an extra 500 on the cab-access slider as I have not used it once; wish I would have gotten the Wind doors but it would have been an extra grand and I was more concerned on throwing money towards the roof rack/rail system. Nice truck dude!
Yeah I forgot LEER bought ARE. I believe my ARE shell was bought before LEER owned them but that’s a good point. Do you have a plan for a specific roof rack? I plan on buying one in the next couple months.
Offroad Odyssey I’m not sure, was looking for a cab-to-shell platform style. Rhino has some cool stuff that is super adaptable but I’ve been holding off due to financial reasons. Would love to see what you get.
Offroad Odyssey , Leer does not own ARE. ARE is under the Truck Hero corporate label now but has never been associated in any way or connected to LEER.
Thank you for this clip. I've been debating ARE and Leer for several weeks, Leer only take 8 weeks and are less expensive. AREs are taking 14 weeks to come in which is not acceptable with my timeline but didn't want to feel like I was settling and now I don't!
I have been super happy with the LEER shell. I think having someone who takes the time to really make sure it is as water tight as you can get it is huge. Let me know how you like the shell once you get it. Thanks for watching!
I have an A.R.E. CX, and I agree with his comments about the build quality. It looks sloppy and the parts (including the seal) looks cheap. I don't think it will last. Also, I had issues with the shell leaking water into the bed. I had to bring it back to the dealer to fix the issue.
Seems to be the case with ARE. Although it does seem that both companies have complaints of water leaking. I guess it just depends on if you have the people on their A game making your shell or not haha. Thanks for watching!
Alan S , if the shell leaks that is an install issue and falls back on the dealer. It’s not as simple as throwing seals under the shell to stop the water. Unfortunately many dealers do not have the training or experience to understand that simple fact. If it was window leaks, those are easy enough to fix, again if the dealer is worth anything. 9 times out of 10 a good dealer makes the difference between a happy customer and an unhappy one.
@Dennis M - You are correct the installer does matter, and he did fix the leak. However, the craftsmanship and quality of the cap is questionable. The screws are over torqued and the materials like the seals look flimsy. I don’t think the cap will last that long, maybe 3 years. Also, the model at the dealer looked well built, but when I received my cap, it looked like a newbie or a little child built it. Other TH-cam’s described the same issue.
Alan S what I know for sure is that ARE doesn’t make their own doors and windows (same for all the major brands) and occasionally those manufacturers try to slip in some cheaper produced products to boost their profits. It’s a trickle down issue that effects the consumer first and has to become an issue noticed by the dealers first, passing the info back to ARE that there is an issue. They then confront the manufacture and require them to replace the suspicious inventory awaiting to be used at ARE. I’ve seen it a few times in my 35 years of selling their covers. The primary issue is that this can take weeks or even months to discover and thousands of covers can be built during that time and sent to the dealers for install. Those issues are avoided like the plague but they can still happen. That very scenario has caused ARE to switch window and door suppliers no less than 3 times in my 3 decades of selling their products, and those are the ones I’m aware of. Product quality is always a top priority but you’re only as good as the members of your team. If they don’t adhere to your standards you kick them to the curb and I’ve seen ARE do just that. Concerning the interior window ring, it is simply a thin ring of extruded aluminum meant to draw the outside window seals against the shell exterior. You have 2 choices, either draw it down firmly and assure the window is sealed or stop shy of drawing the ring in with the screw and risk a window leak. A heavier ring does not stop that fact, it simply raises the cost of an already expensive window. It will pull in with the screw just the same. The ring being puckered in with the screw doesn’t mean stripped, it means the installer was assuring it is fully tight. Not sure when you bought your ARE but all manufactures used foam window and door seals until ARE switched to rubber seals several years ago. Many continue to use foam seals, ARE was the first to stop. All modern ARE shells have rubber seals built into the door and window frames now. The rubber seals have proven to be superior especially a few years down the road. Hope that helps.
I have the ARE where I replaced the windows with aluminum gullwing doors and had the unit sprayed with rhinoliner. IT's incredibly rigid but now I'm selling it to replace it with my SmartCapEVO. The SmartCap EVO is 1/4th the weight, twice the static weight capacity a better overall strength ratio.
I’ve had a Leer 100XL and an ARE z series, each from a different dealer. They both have had leaking windows right off the bat, my current ARE has rivets pulling through the rear window frame now, has never fitted my 2019 Ram box properly since I bought it, when you look carefully at any hardware you will see oversized holes drilled, then bolts, and nuts but no washers, I guess the oversized holes are for alignment, since all holes look like they were drilled by a blind man. The rear window moved side to side until I adjusted it. ARE will tell you to take it to your dealer. Those guys are not skilled trades men, they’re just hackers with tools. They used a big Dewalt drill to screw in my little 1/4” window screws and stripped everyone of them. Both Leer and ARE need to build a better unit. Forgot to mention my roof rails aren’t even parallel.
Here in Canada, I had both the leer and ARE LEER was leaps and bounds ahead of the ARE with finish, fitment, and looks. However I do believe ARE may have been a stronger, more sturdy canopy. Def did not fit or look as good as the Leer though.
I am on my second Leer topper. I must say I learned that the more expensive one SUCKS!!!! My first one had the frames on all the windows (like the side windows on this video). On the one with the frames the windows slide open and shut (no parts to break). On the top of line model that I have now (they call it the SUV style) with frameless side windows. The windows only tilt out about an inch or two (at the bottom) with a jalousy style twist crank and ALL the parts on the crank are the cheapest crap on the market (from the first time you open the side windows, you are waiting for the crank system to fail). The rear hinges on the rear window on my model constantly has the screws falling out and it had to go back to the dealer to get repaired 3 times. I think if Leer would swap mine out for their least expensive model today like I had first, I would do it in a heart beat. Also my friend had an ARE topper. The roof appeared to have more structional integrity than the Leer. The ARE model appears to have a sheet of PlyWood laminated into the roof. If I bought a new Leer topper I would get the least expensive model with the framed side windows and I would add the roof rack system even if I had no use for it, just for structional integrity.
Wow good info. I really liked the look of the high end model but if they have crank out windows that's a red flag. I won't buy a casement window for my house because of the garbage crank hardware. They make that stuff out of some swiss cheese alloy so it fails over and over.
@@bubba99009 Just got my 3rd Leer topper for my 2022 Silverado (standard bed). I got the one with the sliding windows (the one with the crank only opened about 2-3 inches anyway). I also got the one with the single lock on the rear glass because it works with the keyless entry (so if it is pouring and I am running to my truck with items to be placed in the rear, all I need to do is hit the remote for access). Also I got the front slider so I can clean the windows between the back of the truck and the topper and I also got the pet screens, the front and rear lighting and the window prop rod switch.
@@bubba99009 Also has the carpeted interior, the BedRug bed liner and the triple lighter socket. Harbor Freight also sells rugged heavy duty cases similar to the Roam cases. I am going to see how they fit in the front of the bed liner.
Only problem with your rear door... not T hinged. T-hinge stops rain water from pouring down inside the truck or back of your neck. I got the Leer 180 because I learned from my last shell which was cab-high, to get a raised shell so I don't keep pumping my head. I'm 6'3".
Definitely some good info. Yeah I debated about getting a raised shell but I ultimately liked how this one looked and seemed like a good compromise for my situation. Thanks for watching!
A pass through in some form could be the ticket if you want to "van". I have a solid one piece back glass which is basically a clean look (cheap). Thanks for the info. I'm learning. Check out the tundra RV. That's something else for somebody else. Lol but I like the walk through portal. The frame flexes though. I bet they boxed it
In August this year I bought a 15' tacoma that came with a leer shell and it leaks in at least one corner of every window from around the window frames. Contacted their customer service asking what product they recommend to fix it, and also asked about buying replacement windoors for the 2 side windows. Got no reply from them at all. I found a video recommending butyl putty tape...it's not too expensive so I think I'll try it. My cap ahs sliding windows at least but would be nice to swap at least one of them to a windoor.
Windoors are awesome but do have more of a tendency to leak. As far as the leaking you are having I would find a local dealer and see if they can get in contact with someone for you. Any issues I had I went to the installer and they helped take care of it. Thanks for watching l!
My first shell was an ARE and I will never buy one again. The side windows leaked bad. The fit was off on the drivers side where the shell meet the truck bed. I bought the overland shell that had Line X down both sides and the dealer said I should send it back for warranty because of the bad masking job that they did. He sent it back and ARE said they could not repair or replace it. They offered me $400 refund to keep the shell. Needless to say I bought a Leer and would never recommend ARE.
Nope I currently have a LEER shell. I was saying that in the future if I have to deal with LEER that they don’t have as poor of customer service as ARE does. Sorry if I wasn’t clear about that.
Thank you for your video. Its content is very thorough and the relaxed pace is extremely helpful during the process of determining which Leer 100X series cap to purchase for our new 2020 DCSB Tacoma. Some questions. 1) Regarding the windoors: When the vented window is slid fully open, is the screen completely uncovered? If not, how much does the sliding glass overlap the screen? 2) Would you please measure: With the tailgate down and the rear cap door fully open, what is the distance from the center top of the cap rear door opening straight down vertical to the floor of the bed (between the ridges in the floor). 3) Would you measure: again with the tailgate down and the rear cap door fully open, what is the distance from the center top of the cap rear door opening down (on an angle) to the rear edge of the truck bed. 4) Regarding the rear cap door lower edge: How is that glossy black trim piece attached? Any clips or screws holding it on? Is the material encasing the latch cables plastic or fiberglass or what? How hard is the material? Does it give if you press on it? In your opiniion, will it crack or crush if it gets hit hard with something being loaded into the bed? 5) You have an 100XR with windoors. How does the 100XL with windoors differ? As far as I can glean from the minimal info on the Leer website, the only difference seems to be the rear door handle. Thanks.
Hey David wanted you to know I read your comment. At this time I don't have all the answers to your questions. What is your timeframe before you plan on buying the cap? I only ask because your questions might be better answered in a video. Planning on answering some questions tonight and uploading by Monday. If you are planning on buying sooner then that let me know I will do my best to get back to you in the next 12 hours. Thanks for watching
@@TrentMMoore Thank you for your prompt reply. We hope to make a decision on which cap to order in the next few days. A picture is worth a thousand words, a video ten thousand. So any answers you can provide in words and followed up with a video would be really appreciated. Monday timeframe would be great. Theresa (David's wife).
Wanted to let you know the video answering your questions will be live at 3:30 pst. Titled “ Your Overland Camper Shell Questions Answered” title might change. Also did a write up on it with picture included. That is live now at www.offroadodyssey.co/blog-leermeasurements . I will be adding to that when I have free time. Thanks again for the comment.
I bought a universal 120mm aluminum winged wind deflector for the rear of my camper that mounts on top at the back to help keep that back glass cleaner. It came out of Australia where outbacking is huge. Couldn't find anything here in the USA but shipping wasn't cheap bad and shipping was 5 days.
New sub and awesome video here. I'm spec'ing out my overlanding/do everything '16 Silverado and agree. Windoors for the win (for multiple reasons)! I have a transferflow 50 gallon aux tank in the bed to feed my 6.2 v8 and i needed to reach the filler neck on and needed windoors to do that. I thought about the Softopper but ultimately seemed like throwing good money after bad. Also, the windoors are just way more convenient than you'd think they are. Cool video and keep up the good work.
I’m starting to look at a used 100xr. They want $2k and I doubt it has windoors or the fold down front window. I really want a RLD shell, just they run about $4k for what I want...
I've only owned A.R.E. so far (three, purchased in 2014, 2019, 2023) and both they and LEER seem to have great designs/features. But both the '19 and '23 have had CRAPPY workmanship, mostly with window installs. You can expect the window frames to be overtightened/crushed (as shown here) causing them to leak. If you're buying used and care about leaks, be prepared to remove windows and fix it yourself, since the warrantees do not transfer. That's what I'm researching for my '23 shell.
Awesome video! I'm trying to make up my mind on what shell I want. This has me leaning more towards the Leer than anything else (as of right now at least). I still have a lot of research to do and price comparisons on what options I can get (2018 Tacoma short bed). One question though, did you make that shelf in the bed or is that something you bought? I really like the different levels of storage, which is what caught my eye. Again, awesome video and will be watching more of your videos.
Yeah I did some serious research before buying this LEER shell (definitely an investment for the price you can pay). There are some other smaller companies out there that make some great shells if you are wanting something more for the “overland” style truck set up. I made the platform myself. It’s a super easy build and I have a video on how I made it and a blog post on trentmmoore.com or offroadodyssey.co if you want some more detailed information and measurements on it. The drawer was built with all the leftover stuff from the platform build. I plan on improving the set up here in the near future so keep an eye out for that. Thanks for the support and let me know which shell you end up getting. I love hearing what others are buying and why.
@@TrentMMoore yeah I’ve been getting quotes from multiple places to get a rough estimate of what it will cost. I will definitely keep you updated on what I decide to do. The most important thing is to be able to roll out a bed and sleep as well as keep cargo out of the elements. I’ll also take a look at the links you posted for the drawer system and shelf. Once I get the camper shell then I’ll be able to modify how I see fit. I greatly appreciate the info and timely response.
I have only had 1 truck she'll it was an A.R.E. MX model. I know exeryone wants the cab high she'll so it looks like an SUV. I really enjoyed the extra hight so that at my age I didn't have to crawl around like a reptile.
Haha yeah the high top is definitely a nice option. My plan is to eventually put a roof top tent on and leave that area for the dogs and all the camping supplies.
@@TrentMMoore noticed the backpacking vids....I’ve also got a HMG junction pack for longer trips....did wind river high route and hst last September with it...worked great for heavier hauls
I’ll take a look I really like the HMG pack I have. Did 10 days on part of the JMT with it. Just got my permit to do the entire JMT in August of this year so I will get to really test it out. Random question Are you a coffee drinker?
@@TrentMMoore yep a coffee drinker! Did JMT several years back. Last September we were supposed to do again after the HST were due to head nobo on JMT but got forced off due to fires....
I am working on some trail coffee, if your interested once we have it up and running i can send you some samples maybe get your feedback. Yeah that’s a bummer, those fires messed a lot of peoples plans up.
Now that I've seen all of the complaints about LEER truck covers, I'll pass and just buy me a nice new 2023 suv...no more leaks and issue totally solved.🤣😂🤣😂👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Great video. I'm looking for the same setup and would like to put a RTT on it. What is the weight capacity of your shell? Any issues with the shell sliding with that mount setup?
500lbs static 250 dynamic is what I was told. So a RTT shouldn’t be an issue. I haven’t had any issues with the shell sliding. I have heard it happening with weight on it and most people drill into the shell and use a large bolt to keep it in place.
Excellent question, One consideration (not knowing what ride you have) The 3rd gen Tacos have a composite bed. This is really nice but not as ridged as a double wall metal. Consider adding bed stiffeners on a Taco if you are carrying weight up high.
Did you like the topper more for camping? or utility? I ask because I mostly use my pickup with the open bed (tonneau mostly off) for construction and landscaping, but am thinking I want to outfit truck as part-time minimalist camper rather than rush to buy even a small or midsize RV/trailer.
Honestly I like it for both reasons. I bought the shell with the thought of having a quick way to go camping and have everything I needed with me. After really using it the utility aspect has been more then I originally thought it would have been. I thought it would limit what I was able to hit in the bed of my truck, but for my use I have only had a couple of times where the shell has got in the way. For me the utility of having a secure place to store my gear when I am not at work or being able to keep larger items out of the element when transporting them has just been a plus for me. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching.
Hi Trent, thank you for the video. What roof rack are your running? What are pro and cons off having roof rack fitting into shell grooves vs using yakima with cross bars. I am trying to keep height minimal for clearance. Thks! p
I currently only have the tracks to be able to mount a roof rack or something like the Yakima cross bars. I had them install the mounting tracks so I didn’t void my warranty when I decided to put a roof rack on. As far as the pros and cons, I think it depends on your use case. Something like the Yakima cross bars will be more cost effective but limit what you can mount on them. Where as a roof rack you could more easily use it as extra storage as well as mounting a roof top tent. I have minimal experience with both so maybe someone can comment that has used them more extensively but that is what I know from my experience. Thanks for watching hope that helped.
Might be more difficult, but I thought it was worth it I also had a platform in there most of the time which allowed me to easily access the stuff near the front of the truck. It also was nice when hauling stuff during a remodel, I was able to fill the truck up in ways I would not have been able to with a normal shell window. Worse case buy a step stool haha, hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
I didn’t have a huge issue with dust because of the placement of my platform bed. I never bought a seal kit but it would definitely be worth the money if you plan on being in a dusty area.
Just bought one here in Calif. and I was told from the retailer that each windooor was $150- ea. the removable slider was $150, the Thule system was $469- and the regular slider was $90. I paid $2100 for the shell and all the ''ad-ons'' were $2887 w/tax install. Kind of a rip off but if you plan on keeping the truck, they're nice to have. Also I have a '19 TRD Off-Road with the shorty bed and that's the costs.. hope it helps
Windoors are expensive I went to get them installed on a previous shell and they wanted like $600 bucks. My Total out the door cost was similar to @I be Trollin’ They be Hatin’ give or take a $100 bucks.
Thank you for the review. Very good. I have a question. For the leer, what is the total height of opening with your truck? With tailgate down and window open? I plan to roll in a bike and store upright. Thank you.
If you decide to go with a roof top tent I don't think that the leer or ARE will support the weight of the tent and two people without some for of a support system. Consider a RSI Smart Cap which will support up to 770lbs in static weight and 330lbs while moving. Good review I do like the leer caps.
Do you have any comments on the 100XR cab high shell versus the 180 shell ? The 100XR probably looks better and the much larger glass on the 180 rear door could be a problem and looks sort of out of proportion with the trucks.
Yes you should be able to order it color matched as long as you have the paint code which should be on the inside of your door. I can sit up fully in the back with the shell on but not with the platform I built in the back. Thanks for watching!
The weight is dependent on the shell and the manufacturer so check with your manufacturer, I was told around 200 lbs dynamic (vehicle moving) and around 450 - 500 lbs dynamic. So yes it will support a roof top tent with the right roof rack. The shell was right around $3000 with all the add on’s. Thanks for watching.
No real noticeable effect either way. I have heard mpg can actually go up but for me with the added weight in the back it seemed to be the same 15 to 18.
Offroad Odyssey cool thanks. I’ve decided on this camper based on your video and other research looks super clean with the truck !! Appreciate the video and your response !
It took 6 weeks for me to receive my shell. I ordered middle of December 2019 and received it end of January start of February. Install was only a day but it took me another week or so before they could schedule me to actually put the shell on.
Mine took 12 weeks to arrive from the A.R.E. manufacturer in Ohio. A.R.E. had a ton of back-orders for same at the time. Love my new A.R.E. MX Series topper with rear man-door at the back for easy entry/exit to and from the shell.
Are you talking about the platform? I made the whole setup that is in the back of my truck. I talk more about it in my video titled “Camping Setup for under $200”. Watch that video it should give you a better idea of how I made it. If you have a Tacoma the set up is pretty easy you can take 2- 2x6’s and notch them out to sit flush with the wheel wells. I plan on doing a more in depth video here soon. Thanks for watching!
I still love it. The shell has more pros than cons. The only thing I have found that can be a problem is trying to fit larger items in the back. Most of the time I can make it work but there are times I need to have a trailer or have items delivered. If you don’t put large items in your truck the shell is definitely worth it. Thanks for watching.
They sell a tailgate crack liner that will seal up most of the tailgate. The other parts were sealed up but the installer of the shell. They used black putty that has held up well.
I used the hardware that came with each camper. The ARE had a clamp design which was nice for easy removal. The LEER shell had a bolt design that tied into the Tacoma rail. Both of them worked well for me. Unfortunately I do not have a link if I find something similar I will link it for you.
I was told 8 weeks by Leer. It’s been 13 weeks and the topper they just sent doesn’t even fit my truck right. It’s hanging 4” past the tailgate. I’m waiting to see what they say. Might be getting a refund and going with ARE.
No significant difference in mileage one way or the other. That is just my experience I have had people say they had better mileage. Not sure if I believe that. Thanks for watching!
Yeah definitely removable. It might make weather proofing a little bit of a hassle. Some people have some good setups to remove the shell that would make it easy to store and get off with one person. Thanks for watching!
I need to do an update video, but yes the LEER I think has shown, at least in my case, the build quality is better and so far no issues. It does have some design oversights like when you open the back window the condensation or rain will drip into the bed but other then that it has been great.
The shell has a sliding window you can open to gain access to the truck cab. The only downside is you would have to leave the back window of the truck open. This would make it so it isn’t weather tight. I have heard of people sealing up between the cab and the shell.
I feel your frustration. Leer does produce good products but they have always had a large turnover in the plant and that has been going on for years, worse since they fell under a corporate parent company label. Newbies always have a learning curve so if you have a couple of new people working to put your shell together you can end up with a shell that is less than it should be. All manufacturers experience it, some more than others. They can also be a little harder to deal with on warranty claims placing their dealers in a position of proving it is a warranty while looking for any excuse to bail on it. Overall they are a good company but stories like yours are far more common than they should be in my opinion.
My Leer 180 leaks and has a lot of poor finish around window gaskets(one cut to short, forced in place now peeling out) the cab side removable window leaks because gasket is installed poorly.
@@carverboycarverboy2097 , how long have you owned the shell? Those are issues that if reported soon enough should be under warranty. If you've had it for more than a year then perhaps not, but the installing dealer should be able to address the seal issues at a minimum regardless of when you purchased it. If they can't, they aren't worth a spit as a dealership or a LEER representative. Check with another LEER dealer if that's the case.
Depending on how long you had the shell and who installed it I would call the dealer or the manufacturer and see if they will fix it for you. My dealer did tell me that this was a common issue. They did a pretty good job and was part of the reason I did a leak test to make sure that after the shell has had some use that is would still be mostly water proof.
Carlos, without insulating your truck bed it's like trying to air condition your open patio at home, it's not going to happen. If you have a "Bedrug" bed system lining the interior it helps but only to a small degree. You also need some type of boot or window seal that closes off the window openings from the outside air, creating a neck between the cab and shell. Lastly, you'll need to add a fan blowing the air towards the truck bed. That all being said even if you do all of the above it will be next to impossible to match the cab air in temperature. At best you might see modest success in keeping the rear cooler while you freeze inside the cab.
I was told 250 lbs dynamic weight rating (when the vehicle is moving) and 500 lbs static ( when the vehicle is not moving). I would call and confirm with the manufacture of your shell and the model you have. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the review. This is the exact set up I'm looking for. I was quoted $2500 without the roof rack but think I'll be adding that so with tax, I'll be around 3k. Is your bed 5ft or 6ft?
@@TrentMMoore thanks I thought so, but is it hard to get a leer box topper with the matching colour I imagine cement grey and other rare colours like lunar rock would be had to find a matching topper for
Jens Williamson, III (Deaf) The ARE Hard Shell Camper is very good. Good Price! The LEER Hard Shell Camper is Classic like expensive. I have Chevrolet S10 pickup with ARE Hard Shell Camper (nearly 8 long feet) because of No Cab. I love it. Just right for Spring, Summer and Autumn. The Dome Tent or A Frame Wall Tent for Autumn/Winter. You can compare. It is up to you because it is your money. Good Luck! You will know. Okay! Have a wonderful day! Respectfully, Jens C. The LEER shell was about $3,200 at the time of purchase. I purchased the ARE used and it didn’t have as many features but it was $1,900. They are pretty similar in price. Thanks for watching.
That's how they usual wire the light. There's no hot line (ignition on) for them to tap at the rear of the truck. They just tap the rear lights line.... you can always add a direct line yourself.
Apologies for the delayed response, I meant to add this in the questions and answers video going out tomorrow. Like @imxploring said it is wired direct so it pulls from the battery even when the vehicle is off.
I am sure you could. It just depends on the weight of the item. One thing I have not yet tried but think would work it to remove the bolt covers for the roof rack and put some sort of hook. I’ll have to try it here one day.
I built it. You can see the video here Overland Truck Camping Setup for UNDER $200 Dollars!!! | Toyota Tacoma th-cam.com/video/EyLH1NOpkBI/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching.
Great review bro! Going to order the leer 100xr today. Answered most of my questions about it. The only thing different I have to do is get the C clamps to tie down the camper instead of the bar. I took my adjustable slide bar months ago and now I can’t find it lol
Awesome glad I could answer some of your questions. Gotcha yeah the C-Clamps work just as good. Whenever I go off-roading I just keep and eye on the shell to make sure it doesn’t slide.
Do you guys have any experience with camper shells? If so who makes your favorite?

💯% agree. The windoors are my favorite part of the shell I think just makes life so much easier day to day and when camping. Thanks for watching!
you answered so many questions I hadn't thought to ask, and more helpful than the 2 dealers I visited, many thanks
Glad it helped. Thanks for the support!
I had a Leer and went to a A.R.E for my Sierra. The fiberglass was a little wavy on the Leer I had. I found the color match to be perfect from both companies.
Good info thanks for watching and commenting.
Color match on current video is off
I have to agree. The leer fiberglass has a lot more wavy lined in it on my 23 superduty as unposed to me 16superduty ARE cap. Color match both were very good
Thanks for posting the video. I’ve been going back and forth on ARE and Leer and your experiences are very informative.
That’s good to know. You definitely can’t go wrong with either shell.
Thanks for watching!
I think it would. I would contact the manufacturer. If you are not going to use a track system it might put more wear on the fiberglass and cause it to crack.
How is your A.R.E topper? Im considering CX REVO, for my ranger 5ft bed, any thoughts?
Would be great if you started with a master shot; 360° walk around at 20’ out.
360 degree view of the whole truck? Definitely might give a better perspective of the truck. Thanks for watching!
I had a leer topper on my f350, when it broke i bought a sheet of 1/8 inch polycarbonate and cut it to fit the opening. It is lighter and unbreakable. I now have a gladiator and have a topper ordered.
What top did you order for your Gladiator? Leer or Are?
Okay I will definitely have to look into them. I know they can get pricey that’s why I have been waiting.
Offroad Odyssey , Leer does not own ARE. ARE is under the Truck Hero corporate label now but has never been associated in any way or connected to LEER.
Gotcha yeah misspoke. LEER and Snug top are now under one company from what I understand.
I’ll have to look into that I love my LEER shell I have now but at some point I will replace it. Thanks for watching!
Smartevo doesnt look good on a truck, it has big gap between rear window and a top
Here in Canada, I had both the leer and ARE
LEER was leaps and bounds ahead of the ARE with finish, fitment, and looks.
However I do believe ARE may have been a stronger, more sturdy canopy.
Def did not fit or look as good as the Leer though.
Good to know I have definitely been happy with my purchase so far. Thanks for watching!
@@arlenewolf5260 Yea that sounds like a really great setup. I didn't even know a front slider was an option. I'll have to get that too. Thanks!
@@bubba99009 Also has the carpeted interior, the BedRug bed liner and the triple lighter socket. Harbor Freight also sells rugged heavy duty cases similar to the Roam cases. I am going to see how they fit in the front of the bed liner.
that cap looks so sick...great color too
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Ditto on the side door-windows. I replaced the sliders ( after a few years) with the door win type, it wasnt cheap but well worth it
Only problem with your rear door... not T hinged.
I bet they boxed it
Thanks. Very helpful, especially the add-ons and comparison between Leer and ARE.
I want one but dont want to shell out the dough! Nice looking truck, same color as mine.
Yeah the shells get pricey but I think they are those the price.
Just bought a used Leer, I like it.
Awesome used is a great option. Thanks for watching!
@@TrentMMoore sure is, thanks!
That’s unfortunate to hear. I am hoping that if I do have to deal with LEER that they have better customer service.
@@TrentMMoore I think you meant ARE?
Thanks.

Grand! Just what we needed.
That’s a good idea I will have to look into something like that. Thanks for watching!
How did it work? Keeping back glass clean?
New sub and awesome video here. I'm spec'ing out my overlanding/do everything '16 Silverado and agree. Windoors for the win (for multiple reasons)! I have a transferflow 50 gallon aux tank in the bed to feed my 6.2 v8 and i needed to reach the filler neck on and needed windoors to do that. I thought about the Softopper but ultimately seemed like throwing good money after bad.
Also, the windoors are just way more convenient than you'd think they are. Cool video and keep up the good work.
Great video I purchased a Leer camper shell also. Aloha from Oahu...
Awesome thanks for watching!

What are the wait times like right now?
How is your setup doing 3 years later? All the parts still working as it should? Would love an update!!
I’m starting to look at a used 100xr. They want $2k and I doubt it has windoors or the fold down front window. I really want a RLD shell, just they run about $4k for what I want...
Yeah I feel you on that one they are definitely and investment. I had good luck using craigslist and offer up to buy my used shell.
Looking forward to hearing from you in the future. If there is anything you need let me know.
@@TrentMMoore The MX is only a little higher. Not like those ugly "condominium caps" LOL
Not sure the height difference I would have to check. I am not a fan of the “condominium caps”haha.
@@TrentMMoore 4 to 6 inches just enough to bend at the waist to get around in there.
Same taco getting xr installed next week. Didn’t get windoors as needed more airflow for my dogs. Nice set up
Yeah I can get that. I have had to limit when I put the dogs back there because of the heat.
Thanks for watching and commenting on the videos!
Random question
Are you a coffee drinker?
@@TrentMMoore yep a coffee drinker! Did JMT several years back. Last September we were supposed to do again after the HST were due to head nobo on JMT but got forced off due to fires....
I am working on some trail coffee, if your interested once we have it up and running i can send you some samples maybe get your feedback.
Yeah that’s a bummer, those fires messed a lot of peoples plans up.
Great review, this was a big help in making my decision.
Good video. Seemed genuine and informative.
Thanks for watching. 👍🏼
Hi Trent, any update on this shell? How is it holding on? Any problem with it ? Thanks
Thank you. Just what I needed.
Glad I could help.
Now that I've seen all of the complaints about LEER truck covers, I'll pass and just buy me a nice new 2023 suv...no more leaks and issue totally solved.🤣😂🤣😂👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Definitely will stay dry that way! Thanks for watching.
ARE ROCKS!!!!!!
I just watched, and read - two guys got their leers without their carpeting.
Yea I love my Leer
Great video. I'm looking for the same setup and would like to put a RTT on it. What is the weight capacity of your shell? Any issues with the shell sliding with that mount setup?
500lbs static 250 dynamic is what I was told. So a RTT shouldn’t be an issue. I haven’t had any issues with the shell sliding. I have heard it happening with weight on it and most people drill into the shell and use a large bolt to keep it in place.
@@TrentMMoore awesome, thanks checking 👍
I just wish they weren’t soooooo expensive! Heart breaking.
Do you think the windoors are worth it if your truck is lifted 6” as well? Wondering if I’ll be able to use them with the added height
Do you get dust in the bed? im looking for a seal kit for the trunk gaps.
I didn’t have a huge issue with dust because of the placement of my platform bed. I never bought a seal kit but it would definitely be worth the money if you plan on being in a dusty area.
I don’t have any recommendations for a seal kit. If I hear of any I will post it up.
How much I have to spend to install the shell. Please give a price range for reference
Thank you very much
My install was $50. I think if they do a good job with it and will warranty their work $100 is fair.
I got a 18 Tacoma.. How much did this Leer set up cost. Was told each windoor was $250 each. What did the whole Cap cost you?
A couple of questions. Can you order the top color matched to your vehicle? And can you sit up fully in back?
Yes you should be able to order it color matched as long as you have the paint code which should be on the inside of your door. I can sit up fully in the back with the shell on but not with the platform I built in the back. Thanks for watching!
How much weight does toof of the shell handle with a rack ? Would it handle a rooftop tent? How much did this shell cost ? Thank you
The weight is dependent on the shell and the manufacturer so check with your manufacturer, I was told around 200 lbs dynamic (vehicle moving) and around 450 - 500 lbs dynamic. So yes it will support a roof top tent with the right roof rack. The shell was right around $3000 with all the add on’s. Thanks for watching.
I have a ARE 12 year old and still looks like new. I think I have to replace the seal on the door, it started leaking recently.
Good to know. I liked my ARE shell but so far so good with the LEER shell. Thanks for watching.
Sir did the shell affected your MPG?
No real noticeable effect either way. I have heard mpg can actually go up but for me with the added weight in the back it seemed to be the same 15 to 18.
How were you able to add the upgrades?
Like the window/doors. And which model did you get.
I have the LEER 100xr when I bought the shell I just asked the dealer to order it with those options.
Offroad Odyssey cool thanks. I’ve decided on this camper based on your video and other research looks super clean with the truck !! Appreciate the video and your response !
Awesome thanks for watching if you have any other questions hit me up I’ll do my best to answer them.
Good review, thanks. Your voice level goes up and down, up and down...
Thanks for watching. Still trying to work out the audio with some of the different gear I am using. Hoping to have it all taken care of.
How long did it take to arrive? I ordered mine from ARE a month ago. Do you know how long they take to ship usually?
It took 6 weeks for me to receive my shell. I ordered middle of December 2019 and received it end of January start of February. Install was only a day but it took me another week or so before they could schedule me to actually put the shell on.
My ARE took 6 weeks.
Mine took 12 weeks to arrive from the A.R.E. manufacturer in Ohio. A.R.E. had a ton of back-orders for same at the time. Love my new A.R.E. MX Series topper with rear man-door at the back for easy entry/exit to and from the shell.
The rear man door option sounds like a great option for car camping. thanks for watching and commenting!
@Robert P Lutz how are you liking you're ARE topper so far?
Very nice review. Possible for two people to take off the Leer?
Definitely very similar to the weight of the ARE shell and we got it on with 2 people.
Did you make that bed riser that’s sitting on your wheel wells? If not where did you buy that? I’ve been looking for one for awhile
Offroad Odyssey awesome I’ll check it out thanks!
If you have any other questions let me know. I believe I have all the dimensions and what all i used to make the platform in the video description.
How do you like the leer 1 year later is it worth it still? I have a bedcover thinking of selling it and going with a camper shell
I have a ridgeline... I hear that the caps leak. Anyone else have that problem?
How did you seal the truck bed to avoid dust from coming up from bottom and corners?
They sell a tailgate crack liner that will seal up most of the tailgate. The other parts were sealed up but the installer of the shell. They used black putty that has held up well.
what type of hardware is that you used to clamp down the camper? Do you have a link?
I used the hardware that came with each camper. The ARE had a clamp design which was nice for easy removal. The LEER shell had a bolt design that tied into the Tacoma rail. Both of them worked well for me. Unfortunately I do not have a link if I find something similar I will link it for you.
How long does it take to get a Leer right now? ARE is over 20 weeks and constantly lying to their dealers about delivery times.
Not sure I would image they are within 2 weeks time frame of each other. My shell took 8 weeks and ARE was 10 weeks. (Before The Rona)
I was told 3 months on leer where I live
I was told 8 weeks by Leer. It’s been 13 weeks and the topper they just sent doesn’t even fit my truck right. It’s hanging 4” past the tailgate. I’m waiting to see what they say. Might be getting a refund and going with ARE.
Did you notice any difference in gas mileage after putting a canopy on?
No significant difference in mileage one way or the other. That is just my experience I have had people say they had better mileage. Not sure if I believe that.

Thanks appreciate you watching. What kind of shell?
Offroad Odyssey i have an ARE canopy. I meant your wristwatch :p
Oh gotcha it’s the G-Shock DW5750.
Thanks! You rock.
Would plausible is it to remove the camper seasonally? Or is it too much of a hassle ?
Yeah definitely removable. It might make weather proofing a little bit of a hassle. Some people have some good setups to remove the shell that would make it easy to store and get off with one person.
Thanks for watching!
Maybe I missed it but How much was the shell exactly as configured in the video?
Around $3000. Not cheap but definitely worth it. Thanks for watching.
Looks like this is about a year old. Do you still prefer Leer to ARE?
I need to do an update video, but yes the LEER I think has shown, at least in my case, the build quality is better and so far no issues. It does have some design oversights like when you open the back window the condensation or rain will drip into the bed but other then that it has been great.
Does the front window go down or open to give you access to the truck cab window?
The shell has a sliding window you can open to gain access to the truck cab. The only downside is you would have to leave the back window of the truck open. This would make it so it isn’t weather tight. I have heard of people sealing up between the cab and the shell.
I will never say anything positive about Leer. Complete garbage and terrible service. Even the dealer is fed up with all the complaints.
Check with another LEER dealer if that's the case.
carverboy carverboy I feel your pain. My complaints are literally too long to write down. Leaked? Yes. But that was minor in comparison.
Can you drive 85 mph with the sliding side windows open without damaging the screens?
I did not have any damage at 75mph sustained for hours I would imagine 85 mph wouldn’t be any issue.
Thanks for watching!
Hi you said you have dogs, do you open the front window and the back of the front cabin so the air conditioned can make the back cooler for the dogs ?
I usually open the side sliding windows and the window against the cab to keep an eye on them. If it is to hot I will put them in the cab.
Are you planning on getting bed stiffeners or you don’t need them?
I plan on getting them. At this point I don’t feel they are needed but once I put the roof rack on I will be getting them.
What is the weight limit on the roof?
I was told 250 lbs dynamic weight rating (when the vehicle is moving) and 500 lbs static ( when the vehicle is not moving). I would call and confirm with the manufacture of your shell and the model you have. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the review. This is the exact set up I'm looking for. I was quoted $2500 without the roof rack but think I'll be adding that so with tax, I'll be around 3k. Is your bed 5ft or 6ft?
No problem glad it helped. My truck bed is a 6ft bed. If you have questions when you go to buy let me know. Appreciate you watching!
Is this colour a lunar rock or a matte rock? Cause I’m buying a lunar rock Tacoma and want this exact topper in the same colour
To my knowledge they no longer make the color but, it is cement gray.
@@TrentMMoore thanks I thought so, but is it hard to get a leer box topper with the matching colour I imagine cement grey and other rare colours like lunar rock would be had to find a matching topper for
Yeah it took some searching but I was able to find one used and the other I purchased from the factory so they did the paint match.

Where did you get the Grey Bed container at ?
I bought it on Amazon it’s the Millard trifold mattress cover.
I have the same camper how did you hook up the light in the camper .? My light only works when my truck tail lights are on
The company I had install it did it. Let me look into where they wired it and get back to you.

Can you mount hangers on the ceiling to hold equipment?
I am sure you could. It just depends on the weight of the item. One thing I have not yet tried but think would work it to remove the bolt covers for the roof rack and put some sort of hook. I’ll have to try it here one day.
