    I have the same issue with Magic knot. I now use the Weavin Stephen Method. It works great but does take a few extra minutes at the time of each color change.

    Hi Amber, I have used magic knot successfully many times with toothy yarns. When the yarn is slippery I will use magic knot but then also put a drop of Fray check on it. If you aren’t familiar with Fray Check, it’s a liquid that sewists use to stop fabrics from fraying. It stays soft; it doesn’t get rock hard. We used it a lot when my daughter was in competitive dance to stop tights and fish net stockings from unraveling when they got a hole. Take care - Pamela

    • @alovelyyarn
      @alovelyyarn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Pamela! I have heard of Fray Check and I may even have some from a long time ago (if it's not dried up.) I think I will use that on the areas where I unsuccessfully used the magic knot, but I'm going to continue to knot and weave in the long tails for the rest of the blanket. I'm so nervous now that they will unravel!

    I've never had a magic knot come apart. I think the key is to pull the knots really, really tight. I cut the yarn ends about 2 mm from the knot. Hope you don't give up on this method. I enjoy your vlog very much!

    • @alovelyyarn
      @alovelyyarn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Deborah! So I pulled the knots super tight, but I did cut right up against the knot, rather than 2 mm from it. Maybe that's the problem?

    No words of wisdom on knots as I’ve had both success and failures. If I make the magic knot while following the Very Pink Knits slomo video, I have my best success. However, that being said, I’ve only magic knotted things that stayed with me…not brave enough to send those suckers out into the world 🙈😅

    It is very important with Magic Knot to follow the direction of the strands as it appears in the tutorials. You are actually twisting them in opposite directions. If this isn't the answer for you, maybe I'm mistaken, but it has worked for me.

    • @alovelyyarn
      @alovelyyarn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Martha! I'm not sure. I followed it as it was shown in the video. It's so weird that mine came apart. I must have done something wrong. I can see how it will work until you cut the tails right up against the knot. Those were the ends that I'm assuming wiggled out of the knot. I like the knot idea and so far it seems to be working for me to just knit the long tails in.

    • @ruthh1673
      @ruthh1673 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi all, when I use the magic knot, I take my felting needle and felt the knot a bit. I think if superwash is used and there are more plies, it makes the knot just slightly looser for me but with a few stabs of the felting needle it stays tight. I hope this helps :)

      @alovelyyarn  ปีที่แล้ว

      @Ruth H thank you for sharing, Ruth!

  • @falcordexter
    @falcordexter ปีที่แล้ว

    For the magic knot, I tie one color around the other then take the other color and tie around the previous color. You will then grab the two opposite yarns and pull tight. It will make a firm knit. I then cut the strands close to the knot. Like a mm away. I have used this for a few years and never had a problem. Good luck.

    • @alovelyyarn
      @alovelyyarn  ปีที่แล้ว

    I have never got the magic knot to work for me either, you're not alone! I use the Clasp Weft Join to secure ends all the time these days when working with finer yarns, whether it's on a scrappy project or a garment. It's really only suitable for DK weight or finer, but it's secure and less faff than knotting the yarn. Louise Tilbrook Designs has a great tutorial!

    Such a cute headband! I never have had luck with “magic knots”. Suggestion-use a crochet hook to weave in ends, then use a small dab of fabric glue applied with a toothpick, to ensure ends will not peek through. I usually use the “Russian join” with great success. Best of luck ❤

    Amber, thanks for answering my question about changing yarns. Yes, I too have had problems with the magic ball and yes I did do it properly. My knots came undone after I washed it, so no more. I have done what you are now doing, knot and long tails. So I have started a blanket and am enjoying, surprisingly as I don’t usually enjoy knitting blankets, prefer crochet. So since I just started am going to try Steven Wests’ weaving steven method of weaving in ends. Thanks again, Chris

As far as the magic knot, I’ve been using that method successfully years in both knitting and crochet. As another poster noted above, it’s very important to make sure you’re knotting each in the right orientation and that you pull the knots really really snug up against each other. I’ve used it with all types of yarn. Maybe check a few different tutorials if you fancy another go at it. Thanks for these midwinter vlogs!

    Always fun to hear what is keeping you happy this winter! You’ve I’m sure thought of this already, but use a small crochet hook to weave in those short ends. I hope to learn too how to tie that knot without ends peaking out immediately! M8 e would also do that, I’m sure😬. Happy knitting❤️. Gayle in sunny but chilly Minnesota.

    • @alovelyyarn
      @alovelyyarn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gayle! Yes, I'm just wishing those little ends were a bit longer so they would seem more secure once I weave them in. I had a crocheted granny square afghan unravel once so I think I'm hypervigilant about securing ends.

    @deborahderden4860 ปีที่แล้ว

    You cut the ends as close as possible with the magic knot. If you follow the directions exactly they seem to be very secure and the knots blend in with your knitting.

    • @alovelyyarn
      @alovelyyarn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Deborah! I thought I did follow the directions exactly. Even down to how to tie the yarn around the other strand of yarn and the direction in which to thread the yarn through the knot. It seems that this way of adding yarn works well for so many people, so I'm not sure what happened for me!

    Hi, Amber. I am not sure how accurate this is but I was told long ago to never use knots in knitwear because it created a weak spot and will eventually break. I always weave in the ends because of that piece of advice.

    I've never tried the magic knot method, but you mentioned that you are using sock yarn. I'm assuming it's superwash yarn, which is super slippery. Might that be part of the problem?
    With non-grabby yarn, I have successfully used the Russian join. It's not quick, but it works well and I can recommend it.

    Your blanket is looking beautiful, Amber! I’ve never had that problem with magic knots before but it’s definitely something I will keep an eye on. How unfortunate! So glad you discovered it early on, like you said.
    For my cozy comfort throw that I finished last year, I did an applied I-cord and I loved the process! I personally love the finishing touches because it’s one of those “checkpoints” that I can spend time reflecting on the project and the process of making it. I bound off the last row with an I-cord (while the stitches were still live) and then did the applied border on the remaining 3 sides. Since that last row wasn’t bound off yet, I felt like it was easier to get over the “mental hump” of having to do the I-cord border. Hope that makes sense!
    Thank you for taking the time to record 🤍

    • @alovelyyarn
      @alovelyyarn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Annie! Yes, I am definitely doing the I cord as an applied border because I wanted a single color. And I've done applied I cord before and it didn't bother me. Now, it wasn't as big of a project, but I also figured I would bind off in I cord so that would only leave three sides to finish.

    I've tried a couple different "magic knots" ... I just don't trust 'em....
    There's one that DOES really work, where you wrap the yarn around your thumb a couple times before pulling, but I always forget & have to look it up each and every time... I honestly think they work better with acrylics than wool, especially a superwash..
    I now use a Russian join for a mixed ball... Or just double knit with the new yarn for about 10 stitches..no weaving at all.
    A tiny drop of fabric glue will help on the "short ends"......not a favorite, but can be a lifesaver... And in the long run in a blanket you won't even notice it... It pretty much feels the same as an itty-bitty knot.
    And it's washable.
    Knitting is the perfect thing for a weird weather day.... So far we've had torrential rain, blindingly sunny, wind, and now it's dark with a rumbling thunderstorm in the background.

    I’ve had the same problem with the magic knot undoing in the middle of work. I use a different weavers knot or splice yarn together. I also try not to use knots because if find they don’t knit into my work very well. They tend to pop out of the stitches.

    • @alovelyyarn
      @alovelyyarn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Juli! Yes, knots do tend to pop out. They don't do that as much in this blanket, I think because it's squishy and garter stitch. So I'm knotting and then weaving in the long tails.

I like the variegated with the blue yarn but they are all nice color combinations. I share your magic knit worry. I use them in wool but I do not cut my ends short. Thanks for a lovely podcast, Amber! I don’t think the magic knot is really secure enough. I always make a tight knot and weave it in. I rather take the time to weave in than have the horror realization of it being undone! Thank goodness you noticed early on in your project!

    I can see how it is hard to choose which handspun yarn to use for that headband. They are all beautiful. I am trying the magic knots for the first time in a scrappy Habitation Throw. Have made 16 knots and handled the throw quite a bit while knitting at it. So far no knots have come undone but I am going to use your longer tail weaving in method for the remaining 8 knots. That Opal yarn is beautiful. The orange color in that skein reminds me of the robins that sit under our bird feeder. Happy birthday to your daughter.

    Always lovely to see you Amber! Thanks so much for putting out such great content! I LOVE your handspun - oh so beautiful! It was hard to decide on which combination was my favourite because I adored all of them! Had to comment on that magic knot - it has been not so "magic" with my projects as well! I am relieved in a sense to realize that others have the same issue. I have no trick as sometimes it holds for me and sometimes it doesn't! But I think the next project that I have to do will involve the Russian join. It looks a lot more solid although one could argue a bit more involved - but if that means a secure join, then I am all for it! Keep up the great podcasting and take care!

  • @EvieBear236

    Hi Amber. For what it's worth, I've used the magic knot but because I don't trust them to not come undone, I always put a little Aleene's Stop Fraying on the knot and rub it in with my fingers and let it dry for a bit. I have never had one of those knots come out. I use magic knot more in crochet than knitting; I think it's easier to hide it. I understand the hyper-vigilance in making sure your ends are secure:) Your method sounds like it is working for you 😍.

    • @alovelyyarn
      @alovelyyarn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Barbara! I've had several people mention using the fabric glue on the knot. I am going to do that on the six knots that I cut the tails on and then just keep weaving in the tails for all of the others. That seems to be working.

    Hi, Amber - I love scrappy projects too 🤩
    I had an idea for the applied icord. I made a project in a similar way a few years ago & what I did was when I knew I was close to finishing, I started my icord edge at the top left corner of where I was at, worked down the side, across the bottom, up the right side & then put those stitches on hold until I worked a little further. This was a good plan for me because I could switch off & work either the body or the edge whenever I got bored of the other & then when I decided that the body was done, I just had the top & a little bit of the left-hand side to do of the edging. Also, I find it a little easier to hide the join on the side rather that the corner. Hope this helps!

    Your headband looks great. Any of the color combinations you have would look gorgeous. I really like the eggnog color of your socks. As for the magic knot, while I understand the theory, I could never get it to work for me. I also don't like knots. Many years ago, someone said that you don't have to knot wool, but you do have to secure non wool items when adding skeins. I just knit the ends in, and so far, even on superwash wool, I haven't had any problems. (I guess that doesn't really help, does it?) Thank you for such an enjoyable program.
