Lots of awesome advice per usual Dan! I say bring the chair, you’ll need a comfy spot after all the filming! Please check out my camping/hiking videos if you have the chance - thanks for the inspiration! ✌🏻
Leave the chair at home, film with your iphone and go for a DJI Mavic Mini ... it only weights 249g and you can use it for drone shots and as a "handheld-gimble-cam" ;-)
"it would be fun to be sore and tired and sit on a bench chair" said no one ever! Haha, take the chair. That's why we work so hard to get all the other weight down. You are entertaining enough to put up with average video quality. Keep up the great work.
We are learning so many valuable lessons from your videos! Thank you. Bring your chair for your personal space if needed and do the iPhone to balance the chair weight. 🌲❤
Bring the chair. I just went on a trip a few weekends ago and took a small chair. Literally everyone was jealous on every single break because I was sitting on a chair and they were not.
Hi Dan! I met you on the trail you were prepping for in this video (I was the one with the pack dog in desperate need of water...) So nice to meet you out there and then come back to watch this video. So, did you bring the chair and/or camera? From what I saw, you were barely carrying sleeping gear - nice, tight packing. As you tell from my gear, I go old school. My pack is 32 years old. My sleeping bag (quilt?) is 20+ years. Still use a whisper-lite, and I loved sleeping in the hammock. It replaces both a tent and a chair! It also has a bug net, so no need for that. Cotton bandanas, old soccer shorts and wool shirts. Also all about 25+ years old... Admittedly, I need to upgrade a few items, and I'm grateful for your information on what's out there! Thanks for the water and the GutHook advice! I hope you avoided the Wild Parsnip, and I hope you and your friend keep contemplating science as you hike along!
Late reply, but I've had the same dilemma with my trips. I have an REI coop sit pad and Alite Monarch Butterfly chair and often debate which to bring. Then I bought a folding foam pad weighing an ounce and thought I was set. But then I discovered the 12.7 ounce Hillsound BTR (better than a rock) tripod chair and will most likely take that on most trips. It takes up about the same space as the foam pad so I put it in the outside mesh pocket of my pack. It worked great and I was able to use it when I stopped. I have been combining my stops to include fewer, but longer stops to get water, eat, and take my shoes and socks off. The BTR sets up in 15 seconds. Give it a test and you may no longer debate bringing a chair. For trips with less daylight and more time around the fire, I'll probably bring the heavier Butterfly.
I bought the outIdoor vitals also- I found that my buff makes a GREAT cover sheet/wrap to my inflatable pillow. I recommend doing a throughout wash of your buff at your last pre-dinner water hole- no needs to sleep on old sweat.
Great video, the BeFree was a total game changer for me. It simplified my filtration and eliminates a Cnoc vecto and the sawyer filter so I now just carry a 1ltr smart water bottle and my befree 1ltr and nothing more. You’ll love it.
Hey Dan! Thanks for your videos!!! I very appreciate your advices and videos! I’m starting to buy my first camping stuff and you are help me a lot! Wave from Dublin (but I’m from Argentina) 🇦🇷🇦🇷
I have been very interested in what the cost of going UL would be so I did a little research this morning. Using most of the stuff on the list (including the chair and just 1 pair of socks) the total load-out on this list costs around $3,030.00-ish U.S. dollars ($378.75 a pound-ish if you go by the base weight) if you were to purchase this stuff online (granted I didn't shop for sales or whatever, pretty much the 1st or 2nd URL on the search list). As most know already, going Ultra light is Ultra expensive! HA! Another great video Dan!!! Keep em coming and have a great hike. Looking forward to the next one!
Hey man! I am a 17-year-old high altitude mountain climber (I've climbed over 7 mountains!) and you have inspired me to go backpacking this fall! Keep doing what you do, you are gnarly.
I’m a experience day higher, 15 miles plus but not over night. Currently getting my gears together. So overwhelmed by what to get but your video notified for me. Thanks for all the help. You should take the chair, ditch the camera. :)
In my group, if someone asks that question, the answer is always "yes". We always want the other guy to bring too much stuff so we can give him crap. But then when he is enjoying the extra item he brought along, we are all jealous; and hoping to take advantage of it when he isn't around. I'm usually the guy bringing the chair and when I return from whatever task I am doing, someone else is enjoying it when I get back.
Unless you are doing huge mileage days and then going straight to sleep each night .. i would definitely take your superlight chair along. I also pack a small piece of reflectix to reinforce my sleep pad insulation and extra puncture protection. This is also used as ... a kneeling mat / kitchen prep surface / windbreak / seat insulator / pack support tube ... etc etc it weighs about an ounce !
Hey bro hope you are well and having a great weekend so far. Just found you today and really pleased we have your videos are awesome bro. I get so excited watching unboxing lol. Quarantine has been a killer bet you can't wait to get out again. Stay safe and take care bro, Catch you soon God bless you. 🙏❤️👍
Hey Dan, Matt from Ironwood. My girlfriend and I just did 30 some miles in Douglas County, around the Solon Springs area, on the NCT a couple of days ago. If you happen to be hiking in that area prepare for a ton... I mean a ton!... of ticks. Anyways, I would ditch the chair and the camera but if you value it you’ll carry it. Be safe out there.
Curious why you chose the Arc Teryx down jacket instead of your Hardwear down version. You maxed out on hype over the Hardware version in another video. Thanks! Keep up the cool intel videos!
I did a camping challenge of ‘living on the ground’. Sit, cook, eat, sleep all at ground level. I found it very freeing and it added to the camping therapy experience. I am in my 60s btw.
For camera i recommend switching to MFT system instead of Full Frame system, The body and lenses are smaller and lighter. Just bring a camera with 14-150 ( 28-300mm equiv) lenses and you're set
You need to go for the Therm-A-Rest compressible pillow for maximum comfort. I know it's not ultralite and it will take up a bit more space. But it's so worth it!
Bring both chair and camera. Bring on the pain and reward at the same time. Pain for that weight and reward for capturing the beauty of the sights whilst sitting down like a boss🤣.
I have the same water filter. Be sure to remove the filter and fill the bag with warm soapy water. Rinse well and do a taste test. I didn't do that and my first several batches of water tasted like nasty rubber plastic. YMMV. Have fun on the hike.
Hey Dan, bin those fire starters and get yourself some Tiger Tims! No stink, packable and burn a treat. Birch bark is great too - burns wet, and easily found along the way.
Go fully ultralight, with no chair. I first thought that "yes, of course take the chair!" But then, I figured out that you could probably give us more info about being ultralight and hopefully convince some of us lighten our gear!
New to your channel. Caught the hiking bug. Just back from hiking the sierras hiking up to 1000 lakes. Enjoy your videos very much! What trail runner shoes do you recommend?
Leave the chair, you already have places to sit. Leave the camera, you have an iphone and we want you to enjoy your hike! Hopefully I'll be getting out there for an overnight next week 😁
Just did about 45 miles on the Foothills trail about two weeks ago-wish I had a chair for it! So, my $0.02 is bring the chair, ditch the camera, need a trowel?
Bring the chair and use the phone. Left my chair last trip because it didn't work well in sand but still wished I had it, that back support is worth the weight.
We must have serious styles Dan... you mention "campsites" and alchohol stove. Are you not enjoying a camp fire? Maybe the sell little bundles of wood but how would you process it? If foraging for wood, the question carries more weight (no pun intended 😉). No saw/hatchet/bigger knife for batoning? Oh, yes on the chair!
Forget the camera and chair; dump the tent since you're sleeping in a shelter (you said "shelter"); guess you don't need to add a trowel to the poop kit since the shelter includes an outhouse with a bidet 😉. So those moves pull your weight down even farther. Heck, why not dump the sleeping pad and quilt and make this a 30-mile day hike? 🤣🤣 This load-out looks great, have fun!
Hey Dan you mentioned you like the compressible Thermarest pillow on another video, why not Hyperlite Mountain Gear Stuff Sack Pillow since you bring your puffy anyway?
Love all of your videos, I’ve bought multiple pieces of gear per your recommendations and need another recommendation. I’m looking to get a really good down jacket; I’m in Texas so it doesn’t get super cold like the north but I do go to neighboring states where it does get colder. I see in your videos you go back and forth between a couple different jackets, what do you recommend? I want a good jacket that will last.
I film everything on my iPhone 11 Pro Max and if you have any tips and tricks for filming on your phone I think that would make a great video! Also bring the chair! And the camera too! You have saved so much weight with the ultralight setup you can afford some luxuries!
Man that rain jacket, boy its pricey!!! Cant get one even if I could right now. I just looked and there is one small left for sale lol. Also the link for the rain jacket isn't for the Rab phantom. Nice loadout though cant believe I just now seen this video??
I've been using the Katadyn Befree filter for a long time now... It's AWESOME! BUT...... make sure to wash it in (no mineral water...no calcium) when you come back.... The filter won't work as good if not....BUT, If you forget... you can let it sit in water for 5-10 min at camp...it will go back to normal ;) (just saying)
Assuming you’re close to my age, I say hell ya, bring the chair!! I had someone make fun of me for bringing one, but than they were like, “oh man, that chair looks comfortable,” after our 10 mile day summit. 😂😂
I'm new to the channel and I see you do a lot of gear reviews which have been very helpful im just staring to get into backpacking and I was just curious you review all that gear and you have your set ups that you prefer what so you do with the excess? Haha 😄 you can't use all of it right?
Go completely ultralight this time - that is, no chair and film with the iPhone. Video quality really makes these great, so back to your 8lb Canon set up going forward! 😎👍
Just a question, I am a thru-hiker and I love your channel, can you give me any thoughts how to make my channel better? I am not trying to be like you but being older I am looking for ways to up my subscribers. I show what thru-hiking is like no bells and whistles. I know you have more important things to do but just asking. Thanks
Hi Dan, I'm about to get a new pack, and I really wanted to get the HMG 3400 Southwest for a long time, but some thing tells me to get the HMG 2400 and then make my gear fit.... What to do'!
I have the same camera and same dilemma. I’m leaning toward not bringing it. Less to carry and worry about and the iphone XI takes pretty awesome photos and videos.
Should I bring the good but heavy camera and chair? Or should I go ultralight and leave the chair home and film with my phone?
Bring the chair. You aren't hiking that far. Cookie delivery this trip? No camera. Use the iphone. No camera means more relaxing. Have a good trip.
I don't see the link for the Picaridin Daily packets ?
Take the camera( we want to experience your adventure too), leave the chair.
Bring the chair. Leave the camera💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
I second this!
Dan: *Talks about the missing piece of gear*
Me: "A poop trowel?"
ultralight; hold it in for 3 days! also saves TP weight!
obidamnkenobi true ultralighters empty themselves every 30 minutes. No tp tho, too much weight
@@MinimVonHugleburg yes, just use any dead leaves near by
"it would be fun to be sore and tired and sit on a bench chair" said no one ever! Haha, take the chair. That's why we work so hard to get all the other weight down. You are entertaining enough to put up with average video quality. Keep up the great work.

Another item i take is a pot cozy. Helps food pouches stay warm while rehydrating and keeps boiled water hot, much longer for that drink afterwards.
Bring the chair. I just went on a trip a few weekends ago and took a small chair. Literally everyone was jealous on every single break because I was sitting on a chair and they were not.

I’m so excited that I found your channel. So excited to finally start backpacking this summer.
Yep, take the chair for comfort and relaxing👍
I would love to see visually and hear what your experience was like going truly ultralight. So leave the chair and fancy camera home.👍
GOPRO
Go full UL. It might be fun

Leave the camera definitely bring the chair!! Just bought the zero a few weeks ago tomorrow will be the first time in use.
leave it all behind! Enjoy your trip Dan!
You need to bring the chair! I bring mine everytime, it's worth the pound!
I would bring the chair Dan and film with phone.
you should get a Sony zv1 and a Ultrapod 2.... that would be a really good video setup for ultralight - but better quality than phone.
Love the gray aesthetic 👍
Hey bro hope you are well and having a great weekend so far. Just found you today and really pleased we have your videos are awesome bro. I get so excited watching unboxing lol. Yes on the chair. Camera depends- if you are going someplace super scenic bring the camera- if not use the phone :)
Just did about 45 miles on the Foothills trail about two weeks ago-wish I had a chair for it!
So, my $0.02 is bring the chair, ditch the camera, need a trowel?
I have that chair I never backpack without it. Take it bro the jelouse look on your fellow hikers faces will be worth it

Oh, yes on the chair!
Thanks for the videos Mr. Becker!!!
I would go with the Chair and the iPhone
Take the chair. 👍 Do you have an action cam you could take instead of the Canon? How about a Gorillapod instead of a tripod?
Forget the camera and chair; dump the tent since you're sleeping in a shelter (you said "shelter"); guess you don't need to add a trowel to the poop kit since the shelter includes an outhouse with a bidet 😉. So those moves pull your weight down even farther. Heck, why not dump the sleeping pad and quilt and make this a 30-mile day hike? 🤣🤣 This load-out looks great, have fun!
Bring the good camera and maybe try a little sit pad? You could use it to frame the pack and let us know how it feels!
Every trip needs a comfort item. Take the chair.
🥾 🌲 🦅
Hey Dan you mentioned you like the compressible Thermarest pillow on another video, why not Hyperlite Mountain Gear Stuff Sack Pillow since you bring your puffy anyway?
I'd use your phone to video the trip and bring the chair! You're going so light, and you won't regret adding some comfort!
Love all of your videos, I’ve bought multiple pieces of gear per your recommendations and need another recommendation. Wellll.. depends on your budget but the mountain hardwear ghost whisperer 2 is amazing and warm for its weight. It’s a very popular outdoor jacket
@@DanBecker
Cool. That is the one I keep going back to, I really like that jacket. Thanks.
I love that filter and the insect repellent. I use those as well and they ROCK! I can't use DEET, so that is a wonderful alternative.
be sure to "pre-wet" the filter before you leave. sometimes its a slow to no starter when its dry. Ultimately I love the filter.
You got any videos on what light food you’d pack for say a 3-4 day camping trip . I always feel like I take too much weight in food .
I film everything on my iPhone 11 Pro Max and if you have any tips and tricks for filming on your phone I think that would make a great video!
Also bring the chair! And the camera too! You have saved so much weight with the ultralight setup you can afford some luxuries!
Good to know! Thanks!!
Your GPS link does NOT go to the Bivy Stick. It goes to a Garmen. Change your mind?
Chair all the way!
Need to chx out the Fuji xt20 or xt30 and 23mm f2. Half the weight of the canon and with no lose in image quality
Dan!!! I need a video on the double pillow business and side sleeping! I legit have tried everything and can’t get it right 😭
How’s this? th-cam.com/video/YpNEPIoXCHc/w-d-xo.html
Dan Becker How do you prevent them from slipping and sliding all around 🤷🏻♀️ It’s like a comedy show in my tent with my pillows 😂🙈
Will be curios to see your review of the tent. It looks sooo thin even though it’s cuben fiber
Hi, your cook pot link is not the pot featured in this video.
Take the chair! It adds to the enjoyment and that's what it's all about.
Man that rain jacket, boy its pricey!!! Cant get one even if I could right now. I just looked and there is one small left for sale lol. Also the link for the rain jacket isn't for the Rab phantom. Nice loadout though cant believe I just now seen this video??
Did you not bring a poop trowel because there will be developed restrooms on site? Curious as to that exclusion from your list. Thanks!
Shoes? Go lite and leave the bulk behind for a change?
Bring your chair! Film with your phone. Thanks for doing such awesome videos!
If they got benches there I would leave the chair and film it from the iPhone. Go the ul route. I need some of that gear big time.
Leave it all and enjoy the trip.
Which tent are u using ??? Ur link took me to another one

Hey DB try "WETFIRE" !! Does not stink comes individually packed and pretty cheap.! Works REALLY well for me.
When did Jim from The Office start a You Tube channel?
I know it's a bit late but what about a gopro?

Canon m6 mark ii bud. Best outdoor camera or just a gopro
Go completely ultralight this time - that is, no chair and film with the iPhone. Video quality really makes these great, so back to your 8lb Canon set up going forward! 😎👍
When does that bivystick come out? What's the weight?
It’s like Christmas, yaaaaa open those boxes lets go!
Absolutely bring the Helinox!!!
You find the most interesting equipment available that’s UL ✌️😃 Bring your luxury items !

Bring both!
What brand of concrete cinder block do you recommend for ultralight thru hiking
What is the rubber band thing? Where can I get it?
I have the same camera and same dilemma. I’m leaning toward not bringing it. Less to carry and worry about and the iphone XI takes pretty awesome photos and videos.
How can we get ahold of you to talk about an upcoming video?
