A second pillow under your side is brilliant. I might try that since I always get shoulder pain sleeping on my side camping. I have always said I'd rather carry a 21-lb pack and sleep well than a 20-lb pack and sleep badly.
I bought a foam drawer liner at Walmart with an open weave for 4 dollars 24 inches by 6 feet. Keeps my mats from moving. Weighs 2 oz. And rolls up smaller than a collapsible trekking pole.
Dear Dan! I am a beginner and half of my gear is far too heavy. Your videos, which i am "binge watching" are so helpful, because you have the experience and you tested nearly everything, you talk about. Now i will spend my money on the right gear, not too expensive, not too heavy, and no extras, which i don't need. Thanx a lot, your vids are full of knowledge and funny too. Tom from Austria.
Couldn’t agree more about the Thermarest pillow! Changed my life! I’ve tried all the other common items, air pillow, clothes bag, etc. this is my luxury must have.
I always try to go light and just use the jackets/shirts/etc. I packed. 😒 no bueno. Can't sleep and a kink in my neck. Inflatable pillow is a no brainer.
These suggestions enhance any trip. Solid advice, Dan. Newbies should view this video before their first overnight hike to greatly increase their fun. Other than the specific pillow, I'm an inflatable-on-top-of-boots type, these items even stay in my day pack because they are so useful in an unexpected situation.
I started backpacking 2 years ago and had a amazing idea sleep with the gear I use like my sleeping mat & pillow for a few weeks on the floor to get used to the sounds and the fell of my gear at home before I take them out far away from home and have a horrible sleep when out camping This also helped me with hammock camping and use of a pillow when sleeping in the hammock
@@jamesmoore5263 especially when hammock camping from a tent . I spent over 6 months sleeping ok n a hammock at home every night before I tried it out far away from home.
Just fyi on the sawyer filter. You can backwash it to unclog it. But even unclogged the sawyer micro has a bad flow rate. The regular size sawyer however, is awesome...
Don’t forget that with the Thermarest pillow (had mine since ‘92) there is a pocket/sleeve into which you can add a folded jumper or a couple of t-shirts to add more comfort.
You might like an infinity loop pillow, kinda expensive but great for trips and I guess you potentially tie it in a knot and it’s smaller than that pillow, and far more durable.
Darn Tough socks for the win. Did a experiment with mine. Took a pair of Darn Tough and a pair of my synthetic socks from Wal Mart. Wore each pair for 4 straight days. Lets just just say the synthetic needed to be left in garage to be washed as they were funky. Darn Tough was pretty odorless. On top of warmth. Cooling. Wicking. The fact the dont funk up like synthetic.
Great video. Something that is pottable would be able to be put into a pot -- I grabbed some pottable potatoes and put them into a pot of boiling water. Something that is drinkable is a word with a long o sound (boat, note) and is potable.
I once tried my feather pillow from home on a car camp trip. Awesome. Returning home it got wedged into a tiny gap and compressed so small i decided to try it in a compression sack . Its my goto pillow for (compact kit) motorcycle touring). Yes I have lots of different pillows. You could even try and make 1 or 2 small pillows to save weight and packsize ! D.I.Y Do. It. Yourself ... or ... Done. It. Yet ? Stay safe and cozy folks !
Darn Tough is the only sock I wear, day in and day out. I have about 8 pairs of them and have worn them in rotation for just over two years. I'm just about ready to start sending them in for replacement. They are the most comfortable best sock made...........
That foam sleep pad will also help your inflatable pad from squeaking when you move. Whenever I move my pad rubs against the floor of my tent and makes a noisy and annoying rubbing sound like rubbing two balloons together. This should solve that!
I still have my same Therm compressible pillow from 2003 with me right now in Baghdad. It may be time for a new one, but this one has held up from 2003, still going strong and I've carried from Iraq and Afghanistan (in Iraq right now) to Guatemala and back... Probably getting another one before I head to GTM in May.
I have an ozark trail compressible pillow that my son got me on clearance and it is great. Surprisingly so. Ill have to check out the thermarest one too 😃
I bought a few pairs of brasher merino socks in 2003. For less than £20 I've travelled, camped and worked 60hour weeks in them and they are still going strong
My Sawyer Mini clogged with the first liter of clear mountain lake water, POS! Really intrigued by the Gossamer Gear pad. I would like one cut to fit the inside of my tent. I would pay for an oversized piece so I could custom fit it to my tent. I like the inside of my tent to be plush like the Maharaja’s.
Found a head net at Walmart for 99¢ the opening has a bit of elastic so I does feel a little tight around the neck but for a dollar, I had to try it out.
Nothing will wreck a hike faster than messed up feet. Good socks are worth their weight in gold, and Darn Tough are the best available. Made in good ol' Vermont, you know they will hold up.
Hey Dan, I agree with you about the Thermarest pillow. Definite game changer! I got so tired of inflatable pillows. No matter how much air I let out of it, it still felt hard. I sleep much better with the compressible pillow.
Thank you for telling me that you take your thermarest pillow in you backpack. I have one, and I love it, but thought it was too bulky for backpacking trips.
I like your video a lot but you left off the absolute best buy there is in backpacking right now. It's the Ozark Trail 9 inch Long Handle Spoon. Only 88 cents. Weighs 0.4 oz.
I have one of those pillows. It was great for about a year, then the filling started migrating to the sides while I slept. After a couple hours my head would end up about 2” off the ground and I’d keep waking up every couple hours to fluff it up. I’ve gone to inflatable for the consistent height. If I’m not worried about weight, I’ll take both and put the Thermarest on top of the inflatable.
@@nk6197 Packs down to 25 cm long, 10 cm diameter cylinder, or 10" long by 4.5" diameter. 10 out of 10 rating. Those inflatable pillows are all miserable. If I wanted to sleep on balloons I'd join the circus.

They usually get stuff back in stock quickly. I tend to be more forgiving of "supply chain" issues when it comes to small cottage companies. They tend no to have the buying capacity and clout that big box stores have with suppliers. I'll wait to buy if it's something that I really want.
Great list, Dan! Another pillow option that I really like is the Trekology Aluft Deluxe Air Pillow (6 oz and ~$15 on Amazon). It’s a more traditional shape and size vs their standard ultralight air pillow that I know you also like, and has a comfortable cover on it. Like you, I bring two when I backpack and sleep very well.
