THE MUSIC CHOICES!! edith wharton and taylor swift colliding is Very important to me but when seadown realized his wife ran away from him as the intro to long live started playing i had to laugh. (also i just finished reading the book, and after processing all the changes the show made i loved hearing all your thoughts!)

I do think Md Testvalley is gonna end up being Nan's mother, because there's a scene on an episode where her and the Colonel exchanged a weird look. I think it's the one where the girls return to NY and the St Georges throw a party.

Yeah, I caught the vibes and tried to rationalize them away because it would be such a bonkers twist. Though I bet they will justify it textually with her being a motherly figure in the book 🙃

I am currently reading the buccaneers. I have to say it’s the odd one out where I may like the series more than the book. It is a little hard to read especially at first. I feel like it’s a clear shift when the new writer took over, which actually did help.
However I hate what they’ve done to miss testvalley’s character.

Completely valid! Are you reading the text completed by Marion Mainwaring? I only ask because some of the press interviews for the show led me to believe there may also be an additional text, but I haven’t come across it myself.

Loved your thoughts on the show! I have only watched the apple tv series & just now reading the book, watching the show I felt the relationships between the girls was missing/rushed. This is my intro to Wharton so do you have a (must-read) book recommendation??

Glad I wasn’t alone and it wasn’t all having just finished the book! Age of Innocence was my starter Wharton and is definitely her most iconic title. House of Mirth was also excellent!

Thank you for this video! I got to the second episode and couldn’t continue with the show because it made me wayyyy too anxious. I hated seeing these traumatic things happen to these characters but still wanted to know about the plot. I also didn’t know it had source material. I agree with your critique. It does often give CW and it really doesn’t trust its audience. I think I also wasn’t too into it because I enjoy the escapism of period romance pieces that are diverse especially because there are so few. I was watching it and was like “wait this isn’t an escape this is just the tea about being a woman” and that’s a bit too honest for me atm.

Even being familiar with the source material, I too was getting very anxious (though, to be fair, from things that were not from the original). I’m sorry this wasn’t the fun escapism you were looking for, especially when the marketing didn’t seem to allude to a lot of the darker plot points.
