Join along as I babble about books. A lifelong reader, as well as former library assistant, literary agent intern, and bookseller, give me a vibrant world and some awesome characters, and I'll come over to play. My analysis of the craft of storytelling is also shaped by my background as a theatrical dramaturg. I love talking stories, so let's dive in.

Historical Romance Isn’t Dying—But It May Be At a Crossroads
I maybe---accidentally--helped reignite some discourse on Threads regarding historical romance after seeing some vague posts regarding its waning. You may know, I've been kind of eyeing this for years. And I'm clearly not alone, so let's have a larger discussion.
Are you a historical romance reader? Who are some of your favorite historical romance authors? What are some of your favorite histrom titles? What direction to you envision the genre going?
(there are some audio hiccups here I was having issues with so thank you for bearing with me and I will attempt to rectify next time.)

It's been a decade (!) since 2014. But what was I reading? I was in my early 20s fresh out of college. YA and romance were being revitalized for me and literary fiction was opening up in new ways. I was still reading a lot of plays an...

My Lady Jane Rewrites History (and the book)
So eloquent per usual!! Such a great review of themes and nuances. I think I felt a little distracted by the world building but I think I also had different expectations going in (I thought it would be more genre fantasy / genre romance). It is really interesting to hear that it was written during 2020, I did not realize this. I'd be curious to try this author again with more realistic expectations - would you recommend starting with something like Siren Queen or The Empress of Salt and Fortune?
Going in with certain genre expectations can so drastically change the experience for sure-part of the reason I called out that romance sticker since for me that singles genre romance where I have much different expectations! I myself still haven’t read Empress of Salt and Forture 🙈. Siren Queen is a good entry. Personally, I love the Chosen and the Beautiful!
Do you get hiccups in this video?
No but my voice was a little rougher than usual and I was seeing some audio issues on export that I tried to resolve. Apologies if anything was too distracting!
Some historical romance authors are moving to strict historical fiction genre and leaving the romance genre in general.
While I also love historical fiction, as a reader the genres serve very different wants and have drastically different beats. Though in terms of moving with the market, it’s a move I understand. I also think there’s precedent for this. It’s definitely another piece to keep an eye on!
Thank you for tackling this topic. You put into words what I have been feeling and thinking a lot about romance genre in general and historical romance specifically.
Of course! I’ve been thinking about this for a while as well and I am glad this also resonates with you. There are, of course, so many more words to say about all facets of this I struggled with not caveating everything (though of course I still snuck a number of caveats in)
I read way more of the fantasy books than I usually do. It was hard to choose but I had to vote for The Tainted Cup because I loved it so much I also really dislike the audible exclusive audiobooks included 😬
You’ve had such a good reading year and a vote from you is enough for me to take a second look!
as always i saw you had made this video and was excited but wanted to wait until i had seen the movie a second time before i said anything. as a person that had only read the book many moons ago and only listened the soundtrack the way the musical had taken the plot and done its own thing with it had largely remained a mystery to me... while i enjoyed most of the performances the second time more than the first the biggest takeaway i had was i wasn't really a fan of the plot. or more so how the pieces of the puzzle of act one fit together. i still felt like we were really racing through character moments. on a second viewing things felt a little better, i picked up on some things that i missed. but i still couldn't get behind enjoying elphaba... as much as cynthia's performance was good. she just didn't click. and i wanted to say that was just because of the framing of the movie at the end of no one mourns the wicked, but i don't think that's entirely it. the nuance and the discussion of wickedness really centers around galinda who is a more complex character. maybe that's just true of the stage play too. i'm optimistic about part two, and will definitely be tuning in. i'll probably wind up watching this again before it leaves theatres, but the first impression i had was how flat it felt when i left the theatre for the first time.
That’s fair and I appreciate you being interested in my thoughts! I think especially in Act 1 a lot of Elphaba’s subversion is not being “wicked” as she is perceived. I do think this is complicated in Act 2 but it does move fast, especially in relation to the book. And even with the extended time this gets into the challenge of the book of the musical and/or script having to cover a lot of emotional distance in relatively little space. I am obviously partial to Elphaba myself but respect your perspective and, again, appreciate you sharing your thoughts!
Noooooooooooooooo
Thank you for doing this video! I have only read the book but just in the previews and songs I have noticed some major differences between the book and musical/movie. I wanted to try to pinpoint those differences BEFORE I see the movie and get confused. 😅
It’s going to be *very* different as it’s a loose adaptation, and I didn’t get super intricate here. But, knowing this going in, I hope you love the musical/movie. And then you can appreciate them in conversation with each other, while each tells the story in the way they need to. Enjoy! It may be the sentimentality talking, but experiencing Wicked for the first time is so special. ☺️
I just started the video, but I just want to express im so happy to see someone talking in this format
Thanks so much! I’m sure I’ll be able to refine the examples with more viewings but needed to get some of these thoughts out amidst the excitement of finally having this movie ☺️.
Hi! Loved your analysis and comparison of the different iterations of this story. I adored the movie as well, I went in with low expectations because I haven't really enjoyed many of the movie adaptations of Broadway musicals in the past, but this one was really was everything I could've hoped for. I'm a fan of the musical but I live in Uruguay and have never been able to see it live, so seeing this movie in theatres here was extra special❤ Definitely reaching a wider audience!
So special! It was a long wait but seems like it was waiting to be in the right hands: thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Very underwhelmed this year. Most of the titles were very recently released and I haven't gotten to them yet.
Yes, lots of very recent releases!
So good ❤
Which press is/was being boycotted? Did I miss a TikTok thing?
Readers for Accountability has a more thorough summary of events as I never saw the initial posts. An employee from St. Martin’s made statements on their personal social media that was violent against Palestinians last fall. Readers and influencers asked St.Martins how they would ensure reader/influencer safety and equity in wake of these remarks as this employee was in an influencer-facing position. A call for employee termination was never an ask. A marketing boycott was called in response to St. Martin’s silence. St. Martin’s remained silent, going as far as turning off comments on many Instagram posts, and just released a comment in good faith as of August. While I did participate in the marketing boycott, I am by no means an expert or insider on the situation. r4acollective.org
I didn't even know that existed. Huh, you learn something new every day
That's a great reminder of how, at the end of the day, it is a very specific segment still
Happy Birthday 🎉

Glad it’s not just me!
Shoot I wrote a long comment and it didn't post properly but I have thoughts on this topics so I'm going to re-write it!! I used to be really into Netgalley when I first signed up and asked for a ton of eARCs (and reviewed a ton). After 4-5 years on the website I've gotten probably ~100 books and reviewed maybe 95 of them, so I have a high response rate. I reviewed a ton of the first year or two (maybe 60 books) and I came to realize that I really value people reading books and leaving some sort of review.... but I don't always want to be the first person. Frankly I got a lot of duds (2-3 star reads) but I finished so many of them b/c I felt obligated to since I had gotten a free eARC. Nowadays I am super picky with what I request - usually authors I recognize, or the second in a series, or something I am just super intrigued by from cover/synopsis. This year I've probably requested/read 5 books. I also read my fiction predominantly as ebook and nonfiction as audio, so I almost never request nonfiction on Netgalley. What I do use Netgalley for is finding new books. More than any other source - Booktube, Instagram, Goodreads. I browse it almost every day and add a ton of book to my Goodreads TBR without requesting the book b/c I want to wait to see reviews! But I find sooo many books thru that website that I am intrigued by and want to monitor closer to release date. I do agree that physical ARCS have more "prestige" than eARCs, but I don't really care much since I'm mostly a digital reader and my physical shelves are quite curated as my favorite reads so I don't want physical ARCS to screw up the vibes lol. The only time I get jealous is when Ali Hazelwood books get released..... I almost never get accepted for any of the hyped contemporary romance books but I love Hazelwood so I'm always antsy to read her books ASAP. Fun discussion video! Per usual love hearing your thoughts on all things bookish!
Yes; I feel like I’ve followed a very similar trajectory! Absolutely still love NetGalley and Edelweiss (which I somehow forgot to even mention but tends to skew more industry) for discovery! Really value your thoughts here.
@@bookishmelody Oh I've signed up for Edelweiss! But have never tried to get a book from them. I found the interface more complicated than Netgalley. Do you find a lot of overlap or are there books there that you don't see on Netgalley?
I haven’t actively compared them for a long time. I do like that NetGalley added audio ARCs, though I haven’t utilized. I did feel like Edelweiss was easier to get approvals on when I was a bookseller, but to be fair I don’t know if I was comparing 1:1 with NetGalley at the time
@@bookishmelody That's fair. I did get a few audio arcs from Netgalley but when I reviewed them (~2 years ago) there was no option to speed them up in the Netgalley phone app so I got really frustrated and haven't requested one since! I don't listen at crazy speeds but some stuff was so slow and I wanted like a 1.25x
Oh noooo! Yeah, I didn’t even get into audiobooks until I could adjust the speed to whatever speed my brain was going that day and it still sound at least mostly natural
I... didn't even know that there was a discourse going on? Then again, I managed to avoid a lot by not even trying.
Discourse a strong word. Probably more a pattern of observations that I’ve had thoughts percolating on for months.
@@bookishmelody understood 🙂 Funny thing, I got an arc from a resale bookshop. I wrote to the publishers, and they mailed me another copy of it.
The thing i like about Wendell, both as a character within the story and with the larger literatary world of fairy boyfriends is that for all his foppishness and... Blondness, Wendell is often just as dark as those others characters. He is selfish, he is vain, he is DEFINITELY vicious, and while Emily may have been bemused by Wendell being jealous about her ex, I would not ever want those two to meet fornthe ex's sake. But, since everything is from Emily's... Very particular POV, these traits are acknowledged but not brooded over.
It is a great character detail that subtlety emphasizes his strength. In line with the faery lore with a twinge of Oscar Wilde.
I love the build up to the 'fade to black' scene. Because Emily is... Emily, shes just, "I would like to sleep with you, Wendell. Right here and now. If you are amitable to this, please remove your clothes." And honestly ive had more than a few tinder dates that played out that way
😂 I clearly don’t know how to Tinder
@@bookishmelody it's the autistic side of Tinder
I lost the sense of them being fully adult by like chapter 11 😬
That is…fair
@bookishmelody This video has massively helped me though, thanks 🙏🏻 it was picked as our book club read, and I couldn't bring myself to finish it 😂😂
Honestly the book clubs where we all show up, look at each other, all go “meh” and then have a robust discussion are some of my faves! Glad I could help you sort through your feelings about it in even a small way
Excellent review/insight into this book. TFS☮️
Thanks for watching!
Even tho I’m sad about this announcement. I really hope the authors continue to give us there awesome takes on history! I ESPECIALLY HOPE THEY CYCLE BACK TO THE JANE TRILOGY! And pray they do a story on Jane Austen! Or EVEN JANE BENNET😭🙏💕
I’ve often imagined Jane Austen’s story playing out like this: Whatever Jane writes comes to life! So we can literally see her interacting with her characters! 🙏🙏😭
It sounds like you have a story in you! (But also, while not the same if you haven’t watched Lost in Austen, I think it’s fun)
@@bookishmelody I have watched that! The man who plays Mr. Darcy is so hot lol! Especially when Ms. Price makes him get wet to live out her fantasy!!🤣😭🙏
The issue I have with compensating for reviews is quality. People paied by newssites usually have some background which means they can lift up their review. It's not just about liking or not liking something. A lot of booktube is about personal preferance, as in you give a book a star rating based on how much you liked it rather than objective criteria. Just think back to a time when you read a vook tou didn't like, but you understood why other people would like it.
This is absolutely a component-even if I have felt some trade or media reviews still fundamentally misunderstand the material they are reviewing. And I think there are more subjective reviews that are still well thought out and valuable.
i don’t have much to say about the content, i really like your voice and editing style :3 one bit of advice, i’d add a bit of soft music behind it. can’t wait to see your channel grow :D
Thanks for tuning in and the feedback!
I'm looking forward to the Malort video. It is the star so why not focus on it? 😂

I absolutely loved your review!!! I just finished the book and this video is the best
Thank you! 😊
I haven't read any of those, but some Japanese titles I like are: I Called Him Necktie Convenience Store Woman The Woman In The Purple Skirt Kokoro
I loved Convenience Store Woman. I did snag Earthlings and grabbed a short story collection in Japan as well!
Yerin is gorgeous😊😊😊 and their first pics together are so beautiful as well. I cant believe we have to wait for 2 years
Yerin is stunning as are those first pictures but I agree two years is…a lot.

I re read the book as i was watching the movie and while I could see their intentions behind some changes Iulttimately feel that naratively it just doesnt work. At no point does tally or any othe carachter feel real and that sucks because i do enjoy the books and would have loved the full series being adapted
Agree with this assessment! I don’t think the choices are necessarily bad; they just don’t feel grounded.
I didn't know they made this into a movie! I just reread the series earlier this year. Loved your commentary 👌
What serendipitous timing!
Fitz exists in this universe, i am shooketh. Does anyone else made the connection - assassin- Fitz like…
Excited to watch this later >:]
☺️
I highly recommend two novella length contemporary works, Cold Enough for Snow, about a mother and daughter traveling in Japan and The Way Kyoto Breaks Your Heart, a memoir about being a tour guide in historic Kyoto, both excellent!
Sorry my youtube app just crashed and I lost my other comment about "Before the Coffee Gets Cold". I have heard mixed reviews on the series as a whole but I enjoyed them! I often find some Japanese Literature to be very deep/depressing at times, but I have been finding more and more translations of things that are more in my specific genre. For Murakami there really is no going wrong, but my personal favorite is "First Person Singular" which is a collection of 8 stories all told in first person narration. Very philosophical. I'm really enjoying anthologies because it gives me great stopping points, and I love to take poetry or short stories/novellas when I travel. I find it easier to set them down and focus on my surroundings to enjoy where I am.
Great recs!
I highly recommend Satoshi Yagisawa's "Days at the Morisaki Bookshop" and the follow up "More Days at the Morisaki Bookshop". Two small novellas about a woman who quots her job and moves to stay with her uncle at his second hand bookshop in Jimbocho (the famous book district). She learns to fall in love with reading and many scenes take place on a rainy day or in a nearby coffeeshop. It's the perfect little love letter to booklovers and anyone who knows what it feels like to have to start over.
I definitely had the first one on the list due to you mentioning it!
@@bookishmelody It's got some romance too! Really cozy vibes.
I never understood checking other opinions on books before reading them myself. Like... I like the premise, so I get it and read it? I never check Goodreads before reading, I read what *I* find interesting. There was a book that had a rating of 2.2-ish that I LOVED. And I often dislike books that are usually rated 5 stars. Read the blurbs again and decide which books you're excited to read, easy as that
