I have used the same blunted masonry star chisels for 60 years to stake galley plugs. Makes 4 evenly spaced stake marks with 1 hit. I guess you can still buy them or find them at garage sales.
Nice, we call those rounded chisels "ajustadores" or "cincél ajustador"; but as painter i used 'em few times, i think our work it's much easier. But both jobs are an art imo; stay well.

The block is malleable enough for swedging. We have all seen where people used cold chisels, so sad!!! I did not know about the Tabors, nice sealer. Thanks for the tip. I am going to machine up some dedicated plug tools, mine are universal. It will save time. I have done many FE's they are always thread in plug in the rear, new one on me seeing your application. I checked out the Tabors website. Do you use the Tabors freeze plug install sealer. Take care, Ed.
I didn’t understand something You said if we building a performance engine we put the ones which we can screw in, so this one is a restoration we put the stock way. Why not upgrade that and put the other ones that will screw in, it looks a lot more safer than that
Thanks Daniel I’ll order some. I’ll be removing the timing cover off my 289 to re install the plugs using your technique after I found one of them on the bottom of my oil pan🤦♂️
Big Question regarding FE 390 timing chain sprocket alignment, after putting both cam a crank sprockets on, used a straight edge and seen that the camshaft is in deeper by .065 is this normal?
grind those mushrooms off the top of your chisels.. when you hammer and they break off, they shoot out like shrapnel and can really make for a bad day.,

We have never lost a plug and in a restoration we don’t want to reinvent the wheel.

Would it be possible without risk to do screw in plugs sbc front cam ones with assembled block
You can, use grease on the tap to catch any metal from the tap. Do a couple of turns at a time ,pull the tap and clean it and then keep going in. 👍

That’s not normal,both gears need to be straight. There’s a spacer and plate then the cam gear.

You can save a step if you buy your chisels at harbor freight because they’re already rounded over.
My favorite tip of the day " don't drop the plug in the distributor hole "
