This was the old school version of hyperutectic coating for piston skirt coating.
How that make a difference?
I'd like to know how a knurled piston makes more power? I would think knurling allows more oil to be held in suspension and may increase compression from the extra oil on the cylinder walls but i highly doubt it would make any kinda noticeable difference difference on the dyno I would think the knurling would increase the service life of the piston Or possibly a very heavy knurling on a excessively worn piston skirt may increase the overall diameter of the piston, allowing for better ring seal but if you engines that wore out, I think knurling may be kinda pointless
All I see is a bunch of stress risers 🤣
I'm just a Random dude in the comments. Before you go and turn your pit bull lose on your pistons. Check out line to line Coatings. Then watch lake speed test it. Say goodbye to, blow by, put it above top piston ring, say good by to piston rock and nockit dee nock, when cold with those Forged pistons . $35 each on set of 8. Plus They have ceramic coatings for the top.
Same thing as I recommend Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer for older vechilss
👍🏽
I think it would benefit from being heaat wrapped🤔. It wouldn't be pretty but neither is hot fuel. Extremely professional😊.
Wonder if that came out of the boat shop in daytona
Grand dad taught me that and an old man taught him before that 😂
Looks great! I wish more people had this level of love and respect for their own work.
Hope we get to hear it!
They can hear it in the next county!
That's awesome!
Been doing this for decades ,0 oil related issues on new builds.
smokey also grew bermuda grass instead of fescue and this aligned horsepower energy in his fabor he would take a few blades and put them in the cockpit to bring that horsepower energy to the car. similar concept.
Phenolic??
Best video explanation for this on youtube thank you sir👍
I was always told as a teen not to pin rocker studs. Just buy heads
That is awesome!!!
Fellow Pontiac man! Alright! This series is the first sign (since subscribing a few years ago) of your Poncho preference. Keep it up!
Is he saying narrow?
No I’m saying Knurl, it’s in the title Did you know Smokey would “knurl” pistons.
Heard it ping and crack. Can see air bubbles coming from the crack after the ping sound
That is the sound of cast iron cracking.
Smokey is the king of little tips and tricks when it comes to engines
Or a steel gear
Just not on a street roller cam.
If this actually makes more power why is this the first time I'm hearing about this? I watch a lot of TH-cam...a lot lol. I've never heard about this before and I'm sure one of the 100 different car channels I watch would know about this secret sauce.
TH-cam isn’t the only place to get info and it wouldn’t be a secret as you say if everybody knows about it. Knowledge is power.
I know nothing, but thought he was going to say use dry ice or liquid nitrogen to shrink fit the sleeve.
Please explain how much more horsey power is made and how this knurling influences more horsey power? How did you get your hands on Smokey Yunick's ma-sheen?😃👍🏼👉🏽🫵🏼
I have been very fortunate to have been given lots of Smokey personal hand tools and all the Hot Vapor engines. Thanks to my friend Tony Allers who was Smokey’s friend and a friend of the family. Trish has also been very kind to us. If we can keep the piston from rocking in the bore we can keep the ring end gap thight and have less blow by. The piston rocking in the bore is also wasted energy. 👍
Oh. That I really didn't know 🙂. Thx for the info
Holds a nice oil film in those knurls 👍🏽👍🏽
Yes it does! 🙌

Well, I guess I should have seen this one first😅. Stop it people😂.
Oh no!
@@MrDanielSoliz 😆
Stop it people😅.
Love tips like this. Not everybody knows all the little details. You know your stuff!
Do they no longer offer bronze gears?
They do but not really a good gear for a street car, back in the day it’s all we had.
@@MrDanielSoliz not really found of plastic inside an engine. Then again not found of plastic at all.
When I worked in a machine shop I reworked a number of ford and gm heads to accept arp rocker studs. Lot of work goes into it. Then you hope you put enough sealant on the threads. Aye, never had anyone come back.
Adding surface area to increase cooling and helping to retain oil lubricant. It makes sense as long as weight and durability isn’t affected by the process. All can be corrected for with data but only time and testing can insure validity in data.
Now we have coatings that weren’t available back then.
💪💪🤘🙏🤘💪💪
They did this if you were rebuilding a motor using the old pistons to make them fit tighter in the cylinder
Yes that was the original intention for the machine.
Totally off topic but wondering what happened to your thumb nail!? I have the same thing on mine. Looks like a screw landed on your nail like mine did lol
Hammer landed on mine, more then once in my life and my other one a grinder got it. 🫣
Yup, unavoidable in our trade lol. I was just wondering as I've never seen anyone else with the same injury pattern. Nice trick !
So… I pulled two stuck lifters exactly the way you said NOT to before I decided to consult TH-cam….am I toast or can I just hone it👀
Your ok, just check it with a new lifter and if need be hone it. I’ve made a quick hone by wrapping emery cloth around a piece of hose. You just want to make sure the lifter spins freely. If you can put the lifter in and it just drops in your good. 👍
@@MrDanielSoliz Thank you!!🙏 this is my first rebuild and videos like yours help sooooo much!
Congratulations Sir! How you scored Smokey's hot vapor engine I won't ask but Damn thats a piece to have!!!🤯😲
My friend Tony Allers and the Smokey Yunick family have been very kind to me.
How does knurling a piston create more power exactly? I would think that it would cause more damage than anything.
Doesn’t do any damage to the pistons or the bore. These day we use coating on the piston to achieve the same effect as knurling a piston. We we can keep the piston from rocking we can keep the ring end gap thighter. Less blow by. More power.
Congratulations!
Thank you!
Way to go Daniel!! Kudo's to you and your knowledge sharing.
I appreciate that! Thank you
