Personally I liked gold a lot it was the last game to have the classic controls before deadly alliance made the fighting style sets it hasn't aged well graphically but it was a port of a n64 ps1 era game and it added quanchi who is easily the best character to be released after the 3s and trilogy
I played MK4 on the N64 but later picked up the MK Gold edition for DC (the red disc version fixes the bugs). Underrated and over-the-top, this game introduced weapons and side-stepping to traditionally 2D combat and represents the franchise well. I'd say MK9 is my favorite, however.
Would you ever consider doing the newer MK games? I'd be interested to hear your opinion on Deception and Armageddon on the PS2, Xbox or Gamecube (I think that's all they were released for). I always enjoy your MK reviews, even though you seem like more of a Street Fighter guy, it's always cool to hear a fair opinion on the MK series. I've been getting much more into the mythos and gameplay of the series lately, so yeah, whatever I can find is cool to watch. Your reviews in particular.
It's good to actually see a review that doesn't rip MK Gold to shreds. I've played and beaten this game loads of times, and I even used to whup ass in MK4 in the arcades, and all things considered, there are MUCH worse MK games out there. Special Forces, anyone?
420Ganjamike That was when Capcom was at there peek of innovative thinking power stone and power stone 2 where both addictive and fun video games now capcom is just a memory in peoples mind that use make good games.
Power Stone was so great. I even traded in Soul Calibur to get Power Stone because I liked the original gameplay and wackiness of it all. Capcom ought to release a mobile version for iOS and Android platforms.
This may not be one of the better MK's, but in my opinion it handled kharacter endings better than any MK game to date. It was the first MK that I ever tried to beat with every kharacter just so that I could see their sweet FMV endings. I was excited for MK Deadly Alliance because I assumed that Midway would continue the positive trend of using FMV for the kharacter endings, but alas. They decided to go with moving images on a more or less static background. Because of that I feel like NetherRealm has been holding back in their MK development because this game still has a special place in my heart because of the FMV kharacter endings. I agree. The gameplay is a bit shoddy, but the payoff is well worth it.
by holding back you must mean creating the best fighting game of last year and coming out with a second (and possibly 3rd) season throughout this year? I'll say I didn't like the PS2 era of the series but starting with Mortal Kombat (2010) into Mortal Kombat X? this series is anything but "holding back"
The Dreamcast actually allows for VGA output. I've never seen an official SEGA branded accessory for it; but there are some decent unofficial cables (marked simply "DC VGA CABLE") out there. They shouldn't cost very much; but I bought mine ages back, so there's really no telling what the prices are now. A caveat, though, is that not all games support it. Some won't display at all, others do slightly funky stuff but are still playable. If it does, it ought to say on the game's packaging, though.
The Playstation 1 was the THING back then. I even have a toy Playstation semi truck from back then. I grew up with the Playstation!!! Cool Boarders, Spyro the Dragon, Jet Moto, Gran Turismo 1 & 2, Tekkan, Crash Bandicoot!
Mortal Kombat Gold is for the die hard Mortal Kombat fans... Like myself. I remember when this game first came out back in the day, i made my friend buy it 'cause he was the only one in my circle with a Dreamcast... I miss the Dreamcast, best system ever!
I love MK4.It actually has my favourite fatality of all time which is Reptiles face eating fatality.I also absolutely love the continue screen. I would sometimes not continue just so I could see my character impaled on the spikes.
MK4 on n64 was my favorite fighting game of all time i used to play this soooo much back in the day...it had something about it that just felt extremely dark to me. I did know MK gold was a port of MK4 though i must pick it up :D
Mortal Kombat Gold is my favorite 3D MK so far. I like it since the moves are the same as in the 2D sequels, the controls are easy and responsive and I don't have to worry about different fighting styles etc. And the one button fatalities are also nice :-D.
@crammage shaolin monks isn't a traditional mk game. it's more like devil may cry or god of war, but unlike these games it gives you that nostalgic feeling that is totally lost and forgotten in the new mk releases. and it's surprisingly fun to play in the co-op mode.
Mortal Kombat 4 needs to be released on XBLA or PSN. It should have been included on the Mortal Kombat Arcade Collection since it was originally released in the arcades. The PS and N64 versions are crappy, this version is good but I'm not going to buy a DC just to play it.
You should buy a dreamcast for numerous other reasons. Especially if you get the VGA adapter found on ebay for 20 bucks and plug it into your monitor. Shenmue, Powerstone, Sonic, Soul Reaver, Crazy Taxi, Grandia II, Soul Calibur, etc.
***** Arcade accurate? Not even close man. The PC version is basically just a hybrid of the PSX/N64 versions. Check out the YourMKArcadeSource channel for some footage. And even then it doesn't do it as much justice as seeing it in the real.
I loved MK4 compared to the other mortal kombat games. It was the only one I went to the arcade and actually won repeatedly. So much so my friend thought I was going to get the crap beat out of me. Sonia shenanigans were as good as Liu Kang MK1 shenanigans.
Nothing like a good old fatality, je je je, on the dreamcast subject, yes, it has a great library of great fighting game, include the ones mentioned but make sure to also include dead or alive 2, power stone, plasma sword, good games
I like Mortal Kombat 4/Gold for a few reasons. The endings are awesome. The fatalities are absolutely deliciously gory brutal, as good as MK3 was, the fatalities sucked. The characters are good for the most part, most of the new ones are lame but all the classics you care about are here, Scorpion, SubZero, Johnny Cage, Raien etc. I also love the dark and creepy atmosphere of Mortal Kombat 4, fighting Goro used to scare me.
androiddreamcastgamer The original printing of the game (the gold CD) had many glitches. The 2nd printing of the game (the red CD) fixed some but not all of the glitches.
DC did have better Graphical capabilities than the PS2. The game developers just didn't have time to learn the system and take full advantage. For an example. Look at the first COD (on xbox 360) and look at the latest. It takes time for game developers to learn a system. Though I don't know of any games that actually pushed the Dreamcast to it's limits.
That and to my knowledge, the Dreamcast took advantage of anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering while again tmk, the PS2, Gamecube, and even XBOX did not do. As far as a game pushing the Dreamcast to its limits, not really. A lot of games for the Dreamcast were just arcade ports, which usually ran on Dreamcast hardware anyway, the Naomi.
@Wuggynaut im one these people who sit inbetween the two. i like consoles for co op gaming mostly, and if i want a long, big single player game ill pick pc. as for old and retro games...ill pick both. its kinda over the top for people outright hate others for liking one over the other....they are just damn machines that play games
@Catterjee All you said was actually wrong. It does save data- score and settings and their are hidden characters just not unlockable like noob saibot and sektor.
It’s awesome. I see it as if the new gen X/11 mixed with the old style in one game. Can’t wait to burn this to a disk to play it on my old model cast 😅😂
@acdlegend Don't see why not, Trilogy had 2 or so for every character, on top of Animalities, Brutalities, Friendships and Babalities, plus the N64 version had fatalities on the bosses....I'm sure with the expanded capacity of the Xbox, PS2 and Wii file systems they could put at LEAST 1 fatality per person
Hello friend this very good game my problem is that there are debug bone that moves very slow and wanted to know how to get the debug debug that hate and love this game if you know just tell me what game so congratulations on the game I love your videos, I subscribe :)
MK4 was good, not great but good. And one thing that is Gold, is the “Speed”of the gameplay, graphics are better on the DC, and great sound. This was like a combo lite Shang-less sequel to UMK3, and the last time you’d get the classic run meter.
I'd love this game to be in a Dreamcast Classic re-release (if it were to happen) along with Power Stone, Power Stone 2, Zombie Revenge, and Virtua Fighter 3tb.
MK is the best fighting game ever. Yes, I like Street Fighter, that game inspired all fighting games but MK is much cooler plus new technique, graphics, speed, better storyline, much more interesting characters. Virtua Fighter is #2 - another brilliant game franchise
MK4 felt slow on the PSX but looks really fast and smooth on the dreamcast. It was an ok MK game. 4:57 and 5:01 Quan Chi's projectiles are held up by strings XD
If I could, I would buy a Sega Dreamcast just so I can play Mortal Kombat Gold. I like Mortal Kombat 4 (better than Deadly Alliance, Deception, Armageddon & DC Universe) so chances are I'll like Mortal Kombat Gold (possibly better than Mortal Kombat 4). The odds are I'm probably still gonna like the 2D Mortal Kombats better.
the first MK put in to 3D was like first nail to the coffin of the 3D series.....one of the programmers was bragging that he find out the way of putting the beat-up face marks the same way on each character (something like copy and paste)
Please Review MK3 for n64. Because your my favorite reviewer and my favorite comic. ( 2 compliments in one. Do I deserve a gift from lord karnage himself? )
A lot of people didn't like this incarnation of MK. I loved it.
10 years late reply... I also loved it and still do :)
Personally I liked gold a lot it was the last game to have the classic controls before deadly alliance made the fighting style sets it hasn't aged well graphically but it was a port of a n64 ps1 era game and it added quanchi who is easily the best character to be released after the 3s and trilogy
I still have this game on my DreamCast. I enjoy this one very much, as well!
MK 4 was actually the first MK I ever played, and it was absolutely amazing to me,still is actually lol.
Reply 11 years old... same here lol
This is actually my favorite Mortal Kombat game, followed by Trilogy and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
those are nice games my friend.
Have you no shame!?
Mortal Kombat 1 will always be the best. I wish the newer games went back to digitized actors.
^ Same man... They have the technology to do it. Make a brand new 2D Mortal Kombat.
DeegoL9 agreed
@@footyfam8990 So you guys just like Mortal Kombat for its visual aesthetics only? Weird.
I played MK4 on the N64 but later picked up the MK Gold edition for DC (the red disc version fixes the bugs). Underrated and over-the-top, this game introduced weapons and side-stepping to traditionally 2D combat and represents the franchise well. I'd say MK9 is my favorite, however.
this game is an under rated gem
11 years old reply but I absolutely agree
The FMVs when you beat the game are the best part of this version
Love this game, bought it on release day
Same here. Bought it with Sonic Adventure, the system and an extra controller
Hated it!
I loved this because I liked MK4 on N64 and this was a great upgrade.

Can you play mk gold on a Japanese dreamcast, or is it us only? Cuz mine does not boot up.
@FalconCrestlover73 do people still play dreamcast online?
This game is very funny, the screams and voices are comic. And what that really matters is the celebration. hahaha
2 more fighting games to check out on the Dreamcast is Dead or Alive 2, and Fighting Vipers!
this is the definition of my nostalgia and i owned it on the pc now the problem is finding it
I'm liking all of these Dreamcast reviews. I sold off mine a little bit ago but these are making me I should get another one.
It's good to actually see a review that doesn't rip MK Gold to shreds. I've played and beaten this game loads of times, and I even used to whup ass in MK4 in the arcades, and all things considered, there are MUCH worse MK games out there. Special Forces, anyone?
My advice? Get the red disc one with the words "Hot New!" on the cover.
Another good fighting game you forgot to mention was Power Stone, That game was sweet.
Jeez. Cyrax's fatality at the end is insane. Blowing up the whole world (including himself) means everybody lost. Weird fatality.

I would say it IS one of the better mortal kobat games.
Tate Adams I agree, and i think Mk3 for PC has earned a solid 2nd place :)

+Paul Gordon that's because they had visuals instead of just reading descriptions.

When are you gonna review Shenmue for dreamcast?..... or did you already?
The Playstation 1 was the THING back then. I even have a toy Playstation semi truck from back then. I grew up with the Playstation!!! Cool Boarders, Spyro the Dragon, Jet Moto, Gran Turismo 1 & 2, Tekkan, Crash Bandicoot!
They need this for Xbox live arcade
Mortal Kombat Gold is for the die hard Mortal Kombat fans... Like myself. I remember when this game first came out back in the day, i made my friend buy it 'cause he was the only one in my circle with a Dreamcast... I miss the Dreamcast, best system ever!
God I used to play MK4 and this sooooo much back in the day. I really need to play this again
Where can I download the corrected version? It is under the red cover.
I love this game, i hope they release on PSN and Live :)
ahh the memories of playing mortal kombat 4 on my N64. man do i miss that console
I love MK4.It actually has my favourite fatality of all time which is Reptiles face eating fatality.I also absolutely love the continue screen. I would sometimes not continue just so I could see my character impaled on the spikes.

OMG, YES!!!! I've been wanting an arcade perfect form of MK4 for years now!

deadeyedrew85 you can download DC emulator on pc computer I have DC on pc and mkg is really enoyble
I basically just did that lol. Love mk4 on PlayStation and always wanted to have this version.
I loved MK4 compared to the other mortal kombat games.

Deadly Alliance is my all time favorite MK. It was the first one I was any good at, lol.
i never saw that cyrax fatality before. NICE
no doubt everything about this game makes this version soo gold, it blows all 2d mortal kombat games away.
is this better than the n64 version?
yeah my favorite videogame channel in a wonderful review!!!

Good game! I have this for the Playstation, and it's a bit more accessible compared to the other games.
Got this game with my Dreamcast back in 1999. MK Gold was a great improvement over MK4 (that I was playing on the N64 at the time).
CGR and Mortal Kombat , you can´t go wrong whit that one
I think CGR has the second printing of the game. Where some (but not all) of the problems were fixed.
androiddreamcastgamer
The original CD design is in gold, while the second printing is in red.

I love the fact that there's a training mode! Is there one in Street Fighter IV?? Because if there is, I'd love to get it for my PS3.
It's Mortal Kombat - Cool
It's on the mighty Dreamcast - Awesome.
Holy shit... I had this when I was like 5, I was so sad when my Dreamcast died :,(
didnt they have a remake of this on the gamecube?
@Wuggynaut im one these people who sit inbetween the two. i like consoles for co op gaming mostly, and if i want a long, big single player game ill pick pc. as for old and retro games...ill pick both. its kinda over the top for people outright hate others for liking one over the other....they are just damn machines that play games

@KCvidiot Depends on the game type too. For me, RPG where you select charcter(s) or unit(s) and city/person sims PC all the way,
@1231dud how would you know what tanya's "batcave" looks like?
Lord Karnage there is a red disc version that contains numerous bug fixes
Very nice review as always
angry joe is still my favorite. he even freakin acts sometimes. great stuff
with endings and everything ?
This game frightened me alittle bit when I was 8 or 9 (PS Version)!

I almost peed my pants when I saw Cyrax pull out a lightsaber!!!!
@luisalexander70 PC gaming getting screwed? wasn't Starcraft II released last year?
But is it on the Vectrex?
Mortal Kombat 4 on the N64 is my fav Mortal Kombat
I miss my Dreamcast. This game is just inside my drawer for years untouched after my Dreamcast broke down.
Hello friend this very good game my problem is that there are debug bone that moves very slow and wanted to know how to get the debug debug that hate and love this game if you know just tell me what game so congratulations on the game I love your videos, I subscribe :)

You blew the bloody world up ._. nice going
The pc version of this was the first fighting game I played. My mum did hate all the bloody gory stuff.
Is this worth 20 bucks i saw it for 20 bucks?
I'd love this game to be in a Dreamcast Classic re-release (if it were to happen) along with Power Stone, Power Stone 2, Zombie Revenge, and Virtua Fighter 3tb.
Everyone should like every channel more than Irate Gamer.
wow this game isn't bad. Graphics haven't aged well but the game still provides a good mortal kombat game.

I really enjoyed all the Mortal Kombat games (except Armageddon b/c of the flawed fatality system)
I LOVE THIS GAME MAYBE MY FAV MK.

MORTAL KOMBAT 4/GOLD IS AWESOMEEEEE! BEST MK GAME EVER
@Wuggynaut what next portable gaming console vs gaming phones
@LinkNinjaX
yeah, personaly its my favorite mk game of all time because mk 4 was actually the very first fighting game ive ever played
would be cool if they would make oldschool style mk game again with all digitalized pictures and that shit :D
I actually like MK4 and MK Gold, havent played much of the 2D ones since i was a lil one though.
yeah baby! dreamcast forever!
The first MK game I ever got pretty good at.
Classic Game Room, best enjoyed with headsets and beer.
the first MK put in to 3D was like first nail to the coffin of the 3D series.....one of the programmers was bragging that he find out the way of putting the beat-up face marks the same way on each character (something like copy and paste)

shouldn't Cyrax's fatality actually be a "Harakiri"?
800th liker! I love your reviews!
