This game was so popular in the arcade. It was the only game that got my attention at the time and everyone was huddled around it to play against the winner. I remember thinking it was amazing to have tag team and all of the different X-Men and Street Fighter characters. Well done Capcom.
+gedaman Same here. I remember when I first saw the game people were huddle around it. And I was like at awe!!!! I think this game was the turning point for me. I started to look into more street fighter games to get to know the characters more.
referral madness it was popular but it wasn't halo for the xbox also unlike xbox the saturn had many serious flaws some structural no one game could save it.........
This should have been empathized in the review that back in 1997 this blew everything else away. Arcade perfect port that had almost no load times. I paid $75.00 back in 1997 for the game and ram cart. It was worth it. You saw this at the arcades and you could have nearly the same experience at home.
I know this is a 6 year old comment but im about to drop 85 on this complete in box so the price doesn't seem like it went up to much since then so that's good
This was so impressive in its day that I had to buy it on import for my Saturn. It even helped to start my japanese Saturn games collection. And it had Gambit!
I own this for my sega saturn.I haven't played it in years but I remember when I had to do a cart swap to get the game to load. I couldn't afford the ram+region code breaker combo cart. I got it down to a science after a while lol. Now that I look back I was crazy for swapping while the system was on but the game was worth it. Amazing sound and visuals, perfect speed and sweet controls. Perhaps one of the BEST Sega Saturn games.
I had this game (import) on my Saturn plus the RAM cart. I loaned it to a friend and got the disc back scratched to all Hades. It never worked again after that... and people wonder why I don't loan out games anymore 😞
It's always been like that. USA M. Bison is known as Vega in Japan, USA Balrog is known as M. Bison in Japan, and USA Vega is known as Balrog in Japan.
Im honored to own this great for the underrated NA Saturn. Near arcade perfection. The Saturn was a 2D powerhouse of a console. Remember inviting all my friends over to play this game and they all went out to buy Saturn's which game stores were already trying to clear them out. Remember buying my for 40 bucks and it was the best 40 bucks I spent those days.
@KaraLVRogueLZ I always thought it was awesome how they got the voice actor from the 90's tv series to play the voices of rogue, wolverine, and if I'm not mistaken storm and cyclops. (those two im not sure of, but they sure sound similar)
The SATURN was thee console for 2d fighters & shooters & still is,especially the Capcom games that made use of the 4megabit cartridge that made the conversionsions arcade PERFECT!
I imported this game as soon as I could back in the day and im surprised you didn't mention another reason why the Saturn version kicks so much ass: Almost no loading times. When you first start the game there is loading for about 5-8 seconds and after that it runs just as fast as the arcade with no load times.
@MagFlare Model 2 hardware's was perfectly capable of polygon shading, transparency and light sourcing. Like I said, the American model was only designed to use a single 3D instead of both processors and most US programmers could only code 1 processor. That's another myth that Saturn 3D games took up processing power, remember the Saturn had a seperate third processor for addition RAM, which made full use of the 1-4 RAM carts required to run arcade perfect titles.
After Apocalypse does the Saturn game force you to fight your second character? I've played the arcade version as Rogue and Gambit and in the end the coupling I choose fought each other.
The number of playable characters is good for a 1996 arcade release. In fact, the whole game is quite an accomplishment for a 1996 release and still holds up today.
It was for games like this as to why I always had a preference for the Saturn over the PSX. The 4MB games really flex the Saturn's 2D muscle. The PSX version is certainly playable, but the longer load times, fewer frames of animation, and especially no tag outs really hurt that version imo. The 4MB RAM expansion for the Saturn allows this version to be much closer to the arcade version and much superior to the PSX version. Same for MSH vs SF, SF Zero 3, and Vampire Savior on the Saturn too.
It's true, it's so easy to rhyme in Japanese that the Japanese invented other forms of poetry that rely on how many syllables are used instead of how similar the words sound.
Too bad this game was NEVER released outside Japan... Capcom SHOULD'VE ported this game to Dreamcast, along with Marvel Superheroes vs. Street Fighter as two games in one disc....
I have to get this game! I have Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter Collection, Nightwarriors, and Vampire Savior for my beloved Saturn. I have to get the rest of the Capcom 2d fighters. Vampior Savior and Alpha 2 are my favorites so far.
apparently Capcom and Sega were in talks about releasing this game in the west, but disagreed over the pricing of the game ,due to the RAM cartridge being included. needless to say the talks didn't work out. still , this, Marvel vs Street Fighter and Street Fighter Zero 3 are my favourite 2D fighting games on the Saturn
I have X-Men versus Street fighter EX edition and I believe it is japanese and i was wondering if I can play it on my american Sega Saturn with a game shark cartridge?
wow, its like night and day looking at this vs the playstation one, the visuals are just much better on this, and the animation is actually smooth, the Playstation one actually has Animation that appears to be as choppy if not more than the old Street Fighter 2 on SNES.
The level with the police in the background was the first level I saw back in the day in the arcades...I stared at it like a slack jawed yokel. I had both the PSX and Saturn when this game was in the arcades and I remember thinking like my Saturn and PSX...day one. Unfortunately, I bought th8s for the PSX...rookie.
This is important: If you own a Saturn in PAL format, you still run the risk (even with an action reply cart) that the sound will not play properly on this game and several others that are Japanese exclusives which have their own RAM carts. This is due to the PAL format running at 50hz and NTSC running at 60hz.
Truly one of the best fighting games ever made. Marvel vs Street Fighter on the Saturn is also great, and has an exclusive Japanese character that wasn't in the arcade in North America. I really wish that Sega brought that 4mb memory expansion out in North America. That was a terrible move on Sega's part.
@stevepauldaws28 While it is true the PlayStation destroyed the Saturn in the west, that definitely did not mean 2D fighters were remotely out of of fashion at the time nor is it today. At least not in the states. I specifically remember going to arcades and waiting in line just to play this game and other 2D fighters while the 3D fighters had relatively short lines.
@Travisarespicy I personally own this game for the Saturn. There is no slowdown whatsoever that I have noticed. Though I use the official RAM cart and not the Action Replay cart so that might be causing this stutter you seem to see.
I remember spending 15 dollars on the action replay card on ebay,it was well worth it,been playing tons of games like king of fighters, xmen vs sf,real bout fatal fury, ect. One reason why to own a saturn to play Japanese fighting games.
I bought the Marvel VS Capcom Origins on PSN and the game called Marvel Super Heroes was in it. What's strange is that it has really awesome fluid animation, even better then Marvel VS Capcom 2 that came much later.
@BrutusAlbion DAMN RIGHT! I must have watched that ending like 30 times because it just screams awesome! Now Mark how about review God of War: Ghost of Sparta, then God of War 2 and 3. I'm DYING to see your review of just pure EPIC AWESOMENESS!
This looks awesome. The cost of obtaining it would probably make it too prohibitive but I can see why someone would be willing to spend the money to obtain it.
even though the Saturn wasn't that like in the U.S, between it and the Play Station, the Saturn was superior when it came to fighting games because it had less load time, better frame work and when it came to gameplay; if you bought this game for the PS1, you were cheated out of your money since the tag team system was taken out of it and replaced with the traditional 1 on 1. great review Mark. I have a feeling the next 2 games are marvel superheroes and marvel superheroes vs streetfighter
The Saturn does a Sagat laugh at the Playstation when it comes to 2D games (except for Dodonpachi, but lets ignore that); it definitely had the edge, its a wonderful system to own.
Things reminds me a lot of Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter for PS1 (I think), right? Same Apocalypse, same sprites and sound effects for some of the characters, but it had different backgrounds, super moves, and roster.
The comments below me claim that the Sega Saturn version was a lot better than thr PS1 port. I guess I missed out, but I still remember X-Men vs. Street Fighter being a load of fun when I was younger. I think I'll look it up if PSN ever wises up and sells it arcade-style.
I got this game fairly cheap... I think around $12? The case isn't in the vest shape but the CD was flawless. One of my favorite games of all time, and one of the only reasons I bust out the Saturn to this day.
@sage11x The Saturn is based off of System 32 Model 2 arcade hardware. Model 2 is configered to run 2 32 bit processors, both are capable of 3D graphics. The problem being is that the Japanese hardware is more balanced and designed to use both processors combining thier power. When fully utilized, Saturn can produce 64 bit like graphics ala TG16. The American model own runs seperate processors, meaning its way too difficult to code them together and only one could be coded properly.
I have a Sega Saturn with a decent collection of RPGs. But I so want to get this game now! Next game I buy for Saturn will be this and Action Replay card! Us Playstation users got screwed back in the day. >:(
l remember seeing this in the arcades, there was always a crowd of like 20 people around the machine wanting a piece of the action...and l was one of them ;-)
@treebomb the saturn version is almost arcade perfect with the arcade speed, animation, gameplay and controles.saturn has the best controler for 2d beat em ups. the ps1 version was extremly slow, lacked so much animation, the combo system was so messed up,and most of all,you couldn't swap charictors around in mid gameplay.
Yes they do, I have tried to play fighting games with Xbox controller and it doesn't work well. The D-Pad alone is awful for fighting games, but there's also those stupid trigger buttons.
For me the best SF is SF2 (in many versions), I remember playing Super Street Fighter II Turbo on arcade in my town back in the 90s, and yup! I live in Poland and we had 2 arcade game clubs then in my town, coins flowed through machines and I had gr8 time playing arcade SF II with friends :) and Art Of Fighting and many other SNK/Sega/Capcom games :) too bad that today arcades almost died
I not only still have this game for the saturn I own the arcade cab of it with all 3 cps2 board revisions. I own the arcade PCB of all the marvel games from children of the atom to marvel vs capcom 2
Cammys ma girl, she plays well in this game, I forked over the money for the card after you first mentioned it and this was the first I got for it...to say it's worth it is definitely an understatement. Best consoles for the 2D ports of street fighter was easily the Saturn and Dreamcast, not to mention the older.
You really need a Saturn with the 50/60hz switch too get the most out of this gr8 game, otherwise prepare for massive borders & slowdown, unless you've got a Jap' saturn of course!
At the time this game came out, 2d fighters were somewhat out of fashion with tekken and virtua fighter being the new direction beat em ups were heading. The Playstation at the time wiped the floor with the Saturn (in Europe at least)in sales and the absolutley brilliant 2d fighter capabilities of the saturn were overlooked. Nowadays people are more appreciative of the saturn which is cool. Additionally Ive just "closed my eyes and thought happy thoughts" and ordered this from Japan, woo hoo!!
@Tornado1994 It wasn't just difficulty in harnessing the system's power that held Saturn's 3D games back. The system lacked the PS1's hardware for gouraud shading, transparency, light sourcing, etc. Developers could still fake these effects with clever programming, but that sort of workaround ate up processor power that could've been used elsewhere. I'm not bagging on Sega here, but the Saturn wasn't a 3D machine. It was, however, the apotheosis of 2D hardware.
@tapion567 Plenty. The PSone version was released 6 months late in the US exclusively on PSone since the Saturn was already dead in America by April of 1998. Needless to say, gamers who read reviews of the import Saturn version were insulted by the PSone, the system's lack of RAM slowed down animation frames, made the game sloppy, sluggish, made poor loading times and REMOVED THE TAG TEAM MODE! On the Saturn, its 100% arcade perfect. smooth animation, oragasm of sprites, tag team mode etc.
That picture of Cyclops and Ryu shaking hands remains as one of the most iconic ones in video game history.
100%
Luv it!
This game was so popular in the arcade. It was the only game that got my attention at the time and everyone was huddled around it to play against the winner. I remember thinking it was amazing to have tag team and all of the different X-Men and Street Fighter characters. Well done Capcom.
+gedaman yep it was really popular only wish there were more street fighter and xmen characters respectively.
+gedaman Same here. I remember when I first saw the game people were huddle around it. And I was like at awe!!!! I think this game was the turning point for me. I started to look into more street fighter games to get to know the characters more.
referral madness
it was popular but it wasn't halo for the xbox also unlike xbox the saturn had many serious flaws some structural no one game could save it.........
gedaman it didn't have any "structural flaws", what the heck are you talking about? lol
I honestly miss these reviews, makes me sad they no longer make them now :(
Mark's back, bro!
This should have been empathized in the review that back in 1997 this blew everything else away. Arcade perfect port that had almost no load times. I paid $75.00 back in 1997 for the game and ram cart. It was worth it. You saw this at the arcades and you could have nearly the same experience at home.
Absolutely Amazing
I know this is a 6 year old comment but im about to drop 85 on this complete in box so the price doesn't seem like it went up to much since then so that's good
Gotta love the ending with that sax playing.
One of the best Saturn titles. I love it.
Makes me appreciate the Saturn that I got for Christmas. Seeing these videos is making me go on that hunt for the games and peripherals.
bought it with the 4 mb card limited edition from amazon for the saturn cant wait
"if all games on the sega looked like this, there is no reason for buying a PS" You are so freaking right mark!
if the US had japan's saturn library, sega might still be making consoles
This was so impressive in its day that I had to buy it on import for my Saturn. It even helped to start my japanese Saturn games collection. And it had Gambit!
One of my all time favourite fighting games!
I own this for my sega saturn.I haven't played it in years but I remember when I had to do a cart swap to get the game to load. I couldn't afford the ram+region code breaker combo cart. Have a copy coming in the mail that was about 32 bucks.
Hope u enjoy it 👍
You should get Street Fighter V Marvel
Just got a copy for $150 on PS1, and thats a good deal. Resellers and nostalgia are messing it all up anymore.
Those graphics are really impressive. It looks like it could be on the Dreamcast
I had this game (import) on my Saturn plus the RAM cart. I loaned it to a friend and got the disc back scratched to all Hades. It never worked again after that... and people wonder why I don't loan out games anymore 😞
Man, the Saturn was great for arcade games, especially 2D. I'm so proud to own one.
It's always been like that. USA M. Bison is known as Vega in Japan, USA Balrog is known as M. Bison in Japan, and USA Vega is known as Balrog in Japan.
I used to play this on the arcade when I was like 8, IT WAS AMAZING

the character selection menu music was the shit. probably one of my favorite things about this game
I imported this game back in the day, and was so happy with it. Never had to deal with the PS1 version.
Marvel Superheros,Street Fighter Zero/Alpha 3 & VF2 were my favourite fighters on the SATURN.
one of the reasons I keep the ol' Saturn around
A local pizza place still has a working arcade version of this game. Needless to say it's now my favorite place to eat.
I wore out my Japanese Saturn pad with this one. Good thing I had a US one :)
@KaraLVRogueLZ I always thought it was awesome how they got the voice actor from the 90's tv series to play the voices of rogue, wolverine, and if I'm not mistaken storm and cyclops. (those two im not sure of, but they sure sound similar)
Marvel Super heroes Vs. Street Fighter. I spent so many hours playing this on my Saturn.
+IgoByaGo Yeah.... Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter
IgoByaGo what's the Best Sega Saturn to buy Japanese or American
You can also get a Jap SEGA Saturn console and a 4 MB RAM cart and you will have the game running in 60hz!
When you first start the game there is loading for about 5-8 seconds and after that it runs just as fast as the arcade with no load times.
my neighbours had it on PC a while ago, remember playing it, I was a greet noob at fighting games back in the time
3:17 I love Cammy
I am from the dark future of 2023, Street Fighter 6 will come out and they put pants on Cammy.
I remember in 2010 on one of my cousin's birthday's,I saw the Marvel vs Street Fighter Arcade Cabnet right there so I played it and it was so hard!
@MagFlare Model 2 hardware's was perfectly capable of polygon shading, transparency and light sourcing. That's another myth that Saturn 3D games took up processing power, remember the Saturn had a seperate third processor for addition RAM, which made full use of the 1-4 RAM carts required to run arcade perfect titles.
absolutely arcade perfect and a beast of a game!
If Sega had of released this game and RAM cart in U.S. back in the day, they may have gotten the edge on Playstation.
After Apocalypse does the Saturn game force you to fight your second character? I've played the arcade version as Rogue and Gambit and in the end the coupling I choose fought each other.
I remember seeing this game at my local bowling ally. Such a great game.
my favorite fighting game on the Saturn is probably Power Instinct 3: Groove on Fight... either that or Waku Waku 7.
The number of playable characters is good for a 1996 arcade release. In fact, the whole game is quite an accomplishment for a 1996 release and still holds up today.

This game needs to be re released to Wii U or Xbox360. It nearly made me cry that they didnt release an American version for this game.
wow, its like night and day looking at this vs the playstation one, the visuals are just much better on this, and the animation is actually smooth, the Playstation one actually has Animation that appears to be as choppy if not more than the old Street Fighter 2 on SNES.
This game was a true port of the arcade classic! #kudostocapcomandsega

@jeisensei She's talking about Bison since he's named Vega in the japanese version.
I have this game, the 4MB RAM expansion cartridge and the PhotoCD VCD card also =D
Man I was in kindergarten or the 1st grade when my dad gave me this game on the ps1. Takes me back.....
I remember spending 15 dollars on the action replay card on ebay,it was well worth it,been playing tons of games like king of fighters, xmen vs sf,real bout fatal fury, ect. One reason why to own a saturn to play Japanese fighting games.

Still plays that game sometimes on my arcade..
ending the vid with some fan service.... nice
you're gay

Is the American Sega Saturn region-locked?
@treebomb the saturn version is almost arcade perfect with the arcade speed, animation, gameplay and controles.saturn has the best controler for 2d beat em ups.
the ps1 version was extremly slow, lacked so much animation, the combo system was so messed up,and most of all,you couldn't swap charictors around in mid gameplay.
Just found this in an arcade. Love it.
Yes they do, I have tried to play fighting games with Xbox controller and it doesn't work well. The D-Pad alone is awful for fighting games, but there's also those stupid trigger buttons.
@crazykidmeinc great that you found out about something that came out 6 months ago only now.
I use to love playing this in the arcade back in the days! I always beat the game too haha for $1
I not only still have this game for the saturn I own the arcade cab of it with all 3 cps2 board revisions.
I got that character select music stuck in my head now, I used to play this all the time. I had the playstation version unfortunately.
any game that i get to play my two fave x-women, rouge and storm, i'm there! i like marvel vs. capcom cuz i like to play Megaman&Ironman
@crazykidmeinc When did they put this hear because it is on every video?
You really need a Saturn with the 50/60hz switch too get the most out of this gr8 game, otherwise prepare for massive borders & slowdown, unless you've got a Jap' saturn of course!
I remember pumping my quarters into this machine at the local mall....good times good times.
I liked the MvC2 review throwback there
i loved this game.
used to play on the ps1 with my uncle.
At the time this game came out, 2d fighters were somewhat out of fashion with tekken and virtua fighter being the new direction beat em ups were heading. Maybe there were licensing issues for use of the X-men in the US?
@SkullForce4 aww crap how much was it condensed? because i was gonna download it
Woah, this game looks amazing, great review Mark.
@Tornado1994 It wasn't just difficulty in harnessing the system's power that held Saturn's 3D games back.
