Used Cura for 2 years. Just recently changed to Prusa... It's a no brainer Prusa has a ton more features and it's more customizable, being able to draw the seams? Drawing supported areas? Using instances so a change affects all models of the same instance. And the loading times, not only Cura was infinitely slower, but also tend to bug out mid slicing With my FS V400 Cura is faster... but also fails more often To me it felt like going from using a telegraph to a Zoom video call
I really like PrusaSlicer's options, over Cura's. There's more fine tuned control in PS and the ability to toggle Arachne Generator is a huge bonus. My issue with PS is the bridging and support interface options - doesn't matter what I do, my bridges are saggy guitar strings and my support attachments ruin my prints. When a model is failing on me, I can generally put it in Cura and get better results.
Hi Chuck. You have helped me so much since I started 3d printing with an early Ender3. And I have used Cura all the time (and your great profiles). I think Cura is getting tired (lazy). Selfishly, I hope you 'go' to a Prusa style slicer and create more brilliant profiles. Thanks Chuck.

I stopped using Cura about 4 months ago, I couldn't get what I call a good print out of it. I tried Prusaslicer where even the default printer & filament settings were/are far superior to Cura. The seam in Cura was always like a scar sticking out of the print, Prusaslicer sometimes I have to look to find the seam.
Ender 3 pro and Cura has been my jam for a year, at this point learning something new for a few nice things is not worth it, let's see what the future holds. This is a nice trick yet multiples of something I have only done once, how it creates supports, allows me to strengthen select sections of a print are more vital on the daily.
In cura one can center a group of models by selecting them all and then setting the coordinates in the MOVE menu in the menu bar to the left to x0 y0 z0.
Prusa also allows you to add text to a model, and has a model gallery you can use to add basic shapes. And you can add models to that gallery, so you could add a CHEP cube to the bed with a few clicks. I also prefer the way settings in Prusa are organized, and I like that the profiles are stored in easily edited .ini files - I can make the same change in all my profiles in Notepad++ in one quick shot. Now, if only Prusa supported plugins . . .
I switched to PrusaSlicer a few months ago and it has been working really well. The only thing I miss is more advanced "Combing Mode" options. It does have some options under "Avoid Crossing Perimeters". But one option it's missing is Cura's "Max Comb Distance with no Retract". You can get PrusaSlicer to avoid going over perimeters, but it still seems to retract the filament every single time. Even when combing within infill. For complicated parts, that's way more retractions, and more chance of nozzle clogs.
I tried pruciaslicer first when i first got inti 3dv priming and I'm not sure exactly what it was but i just found it overwhelming and not initiative. Then i tried cura and everything feel into place for me I honestly wish i could use pruciaslicer but there's something about it that just doesn't click with me and i find myself starting blankly at the screen. But cus cyrav seems to work the way i need it to so fingers crossed this will continue.
It was similar for me. I dabbled with Prusaslicer on and off, as I had difficulty adapting to what I call workflow. When Cura 5.4 broke all my profiles I bit the bullet and switched to Prusaslicer. Dabbling with Orca as well, but my prints are slower with it right now.
Ive noticed none of the TH-cam 3d printer content creators have done any more coverage of Simplify 3D since it first announced the release of version 5.0 It has had a few updates since then. Has the community turned it's back on S3D?
Could you make a video comparing the oldest cura version to the newest? It would be interesting to see how much it evolved, and the same with prusaslicer
Started with Cura, then switched to Super Slicer. Switched to Prusa Slicer when it got tree supports, and now I'm on Orca Slicer. Cura became too slow for me. Plus some of the printer profiles were locked down. Super Slicer seems to be slow in development. I was waiting for tree supports to be ported from Prusa Slicer, but they never came. Orca Slicer is the best of Prusa Slicer and Super Slicer, with a user interface that reminds me of Cura, but better.
@FilamentFriday Chuck, when you have all your models selected, if you go to the placement menu on the left of the screen you can set X=0, Y=o, Z=0. It does it just a little faster than grouping.
@FilamentFriday In Cura, if you want to center multiple objects on the bed, you can select them all (Ctrl-A), click 'Move,' and enter zero in the X, Y, and Z axes.
Chuck, do you remember when you did the review of the K1? It printed much better when you used Bambu's slicer... Then I saw a video about Orca Slicer... So, yeah... Unfortunately, Cura has been lacking behind. 😕 I really hope they can overcome the difficulties. But until then, I'm happy we have Orca. Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I have checked other slicers because i am sure Cura is not superior to others. However i "grew up" with Cura, which makes me able to find and understand almost everything that it offers. (thanks to you Chep as well) I can also see and aware of it's disadvantages but if i go to an another slicer, i just find others that they have. So i just decided to stay with what i am the most familiar with.
Prusa Slicer and derivatives are great - as long as they do what you want. They lack some "basic" features (per-object flow multiplier) and their extendibility is not great (e.g. making previews for printer requires script from "random repository" + python install). If you want new features, build and use you own version. Don't expect your PRs ever making to released slicer 🙄 In Cura, there are plenty of plugins for post-processing g-code and new system allows tapping into slicing process and *altering how the engine* works. That is pretty unique Plenty to catch-up for other slicers. Otherwise this all just seems like people following "look there's something new" hype instead of learning to use any tool properly 🐇
hello CHEP Im having a issue downloading the Cura profiles of of your patreon website i am a silver member but it when I got to download the files it just says access denied is there a fix to this yet ?
While I like Cura up to version 5.4, 5.5 and especially 5.6 not so much. 5.5 and 5.6 crash when I try slicing. So, I had to go back to 5.4. I tried using Prusaslicer and Orca slicer, but they both take twice as long as in Cura.
@@desiv1170 Could be Windows as I am using Windows 11. I might try 5.6 on an older machine that has Windows 10. I may have found a solution. I was having issues with 5.4 too though mostly it works. It will just shutdown all of a sudden. Then I thought since I am using Windows 11 why not run Cura in compatiblity mode. Interesting though you can only choose Windows 8 or lower as the compatible OS. So I set it to Windows 7. Just for the heck of it I reinstalled Cura 5.6 and set it run in windows 7 compatibility mode. Before I could not even get to slice anything without errors popping up. So far though it is working. I will keep my fingers crossed.
the flow control multiplier is in the filament tab..."extrusion multiplier"...as a general rule cura uses mostly percentages 0-100%...prusa slicer goes from 0-1

dropped Cura for Prusa when they ruined curved surfaces way back in v3? never looked back..imho prusa is the far superior slicer and has been rock solid on my creality and elegoo fdm printers

Průša loads instantly, is quick and now has more features so I am switching. It is a shame, maybe opening up6the software will speed up the development.
That's the same reason I abandoned Cura and went to Prusaslicr. It's amazing that Cura loads very fast on Linux but is just painful on Windows. Oh well. I'm getting great prints with Prusaslicr so I guess that's what counts in the end.

Although a couple of people have solved it, they just didn't implement the fix into Cura. So after 2 years of waiting (and not wanted to start over again dialing in) I went to Orca slicer, now the profiles are dialed in, working great. That's where they lost me. Maybe it helps them to make decisions in time.
2:58 I don't think the Ctrl C Ctrl V "centring" happened - the first cube was left over from the previous exercise, and was not in the centre. It just pasted each copy in the most efficient pattern around the ones that were already down.
4:00 - I swear PrusaSlicer didn't Fill Bed, Add Instance or Arrange All as nicely as that the last time I checked. I've been manually adding and manually arranging each part (position and rotation) which is dumber than dirt. Previously, I'd Ctrl-C and CTRL-V to add a part and it was in a random position and orientation. I'd Arrange the parts and they were in different random positions and orientations that didn't overlap but were a real mess. I just tried Fill Bed, Add Instance and Arrange All in PrusaSlicer 2.6.1 and they all work exactly as they should, which is great. My only wish now is better sequential part printing. I arrange the parts manually so there won't be any collision with the print head and PrusaSlicer sees a part higher than a few mm and refuses to slice the plate for sequential part printing, so I'm forced to slice each part individually, concatenate and manually edit the G code for production sequential print jobs.
Cura's user interface is a million times better. Much cleaner, more modern, easier to understand and find things. PrusaSlicer seems a lot more outdated to me and messier.
Looks like Octoprint is also in trouble! Such a pity with all these guys and I use Octoprint daily! @FilamentFriday Chep, are you maybe looking at making some preset profile for the Prusa Slicer any time? Never used it, but going to give it a bash today and see what it's all about. Hope it works for my CR6SE though!
@@OneHappyCrazyPerson Ancient? WOW! Still works like a charm! Print almost everything on it no problems. Printers are not cheap, so if it works, why change it? And mine is only 2 years old now.

Orca is based on Bambu Studio which is based on PrusaSlicer, but has a bunch of inbuild calibraton tools. I've just started using it over the last couple of days to trial it out
I used 5.5 release after 10 slices it broke with an error.... Had to fully delete 5.5 at the same time I deleted 5.5 beta which the material tab doesn't work and also had crash errors, 5.4 which was terrible on my system then reinstall 5.5. We are up to 5 slices so if it's going to die again I have 5 or do slices left.... Looking at orca slicer
Idk if anyone else has issues with bridging in prusa slicer but I cant get it to bridge for the life of Me since the last update. Cure seams to bridge better.
Here's my problem... Cura just works better right now for my CR-10 Mini... ;-) I started with the Cura CHEP profiles (Thanx!!!) and have done some minor tweaking over the years... And I think it prints pretty good... So I tried the new PrusaSilcer, and it works, but... When printing the same thing with both slicers, the Cura print just seems better... Now, I know that's not fair, as the Cura profile started with yours and has been tweaked over time... The Prusaslicer I am just using the default... But as there is no easy way (that I know of) to import or even compare settings, it will probably be quite a bit of work to try to figure out the differences... Now, it's not a "problem" really, as I can just keep using Cura and it's working well..;-) I do wonder if there is an app or something that would let me compare profile settings side by side... Would be a nice option/program... And yes, I know. The CR-10 Mini is an older printer... But it just keeps working for me.. ;)
I’ve been using Cura, but contributing to the project has been a frustrating experience. It’s obviously not easy to run an open-source project, but if you’re relying on users to submit profiles, then you need to merge them in a reasonable amount of time 😢
I've been getting slower and less reliable prints with the 5.x series of Cura and have mostly been using Prusa lately. It has significantly more tuning options, so it's easy to get lost, and also has more functionality.
Agreed. 5.3.1 was good, but 5.4 broke pretty much every profile I had. I got fed up and switched to Prusa. I no longer have Cura installed on my main computer.
Really picayune differences - doing one thing in Cura takes "extra" steps compared to Prusa, and vice versa. And grouping objects before centering is more logical, because specifying an action on multiple selected items should do the operation on each item, instead of trying to read the user's mind - what's logical to one person isn't for the other. And there's always "undo".
Prusa is based on cura. Bambu on prusa. Orca on bambu. Cura is the reason why other slicers exists, so it is open source. And they taking from cura, not giving back. Oh wait, there is something. Joseph implemented his lastname in cura slicer xD
I finished this video, scheduled it for release and Cura released v5.5 so it’s no longer Beta. Oh well. My comments still apply.

I like both slicers. Hopefully this will benefit development and even drive competition.

Hmm. I have a new learning curve to get comfortable with Prusa slicer. I have always used Cura and have Prusa downloaded. I’ll welcome the new slicer

Joel Telling did a video on it. I’ve used it and I still like the interface.
The times where S3D was ahead of the free competition seams to be over or did I miss something?

Did you realise there were additional options for arrange in PrusaSlicer if you right click on the button or press shift+A?

I prefer Prusa simply by how more neatly the settings menu is, its somewhat easy to understand, Cura is somewhat chaotic.

i'm brand new to 3d printing, do these profiles work with any material? or are these specific to PLA?
PLA, but you can usually just adjust temperature and be close with other filament.

hi in cura 4 you could run vase mode and fuzzy skin at the same time why can't you do this in cura 5.
As much as I love your channel I don't need an entire bed filled with chep cubes. Cura is working for me. 😂

Cura's user interface is a million times better. Much cleaner, more modern, easier to understand and find things. PrusaSlicer seems a lot more outdated to me and messier.
Looks like Octoprint is also in trouble!
Such a pity with all these guys and I use Octoprint daily!
@FilamentFriday Chep, are you maybe looking at making some preset profile for the Prusa Slicer any time?
Never used it, but going to give it a bash today and see what it's all about.

Printers are not cheap, so if it works, why change it?
And mine is only 2 years old now.
@@DeanosRides yes it is, upgrade that thing with a skr3,v3 and you start to see what I mean. You think you print nice now wait until you see those results after tuning.

Being in South Africa, a $200 printer will cost over double here...

Which should I drop cura for? Orca or Prusa? I use an Ender 3
Orca is based on Bambu Studio which is based on PrusaSlicer, but has a bunch of inbuild calibraton tools. I've just started using it over the last couple of days to trial it out
I used 5.5 release after 10 slices it broke with an error.... Had to fully delete 5.5 at the same time I deleted 5.5 beta which the material tab doesn't work and also had crash errors, 5.4 which was terrible on my system then reinstall 5.5. We are up to 5 slices so if it's going to die again I have 5 or do slices left....

Idk if anyone else has issues with bridging in prusa slicer but I cant get it to bridge for the life of Me since the last update. Cure seams to bridge better.

If you root it and install Fluidd/Moonraker ... yes you can WiFi print with prusa and K1 / Max

Here's my problem... Cura just works better right now for my CR-10 Mini... ;-)
I started with the Cura CHEP profiles (Thanx!!!) and have done some minor tweaking over the years... And I think it prints pretty good...
So I tried the new PrusaSilcer, and it works, but...
When printing the same thing with both slicers, the Cura print just seems better...
Now, I know that's not fair, as the Cura profile started with yours and has been tweaked over time...
The Prusaslicer I am just using the default...
But as there is no easy way (that I know of) to import or even compare settings, it will probably be quite a bit of work to try to figure out the differences...
Now, it's not a "problem" really, as I can just keep using Cura and it's working well..;-)
I do wonder if there is an app or something that would let me compare profile settings side by side... Would be a nice option/program...
And yes, I know. The CR-10 Mini is an older printer... But it just keeps working for me.. ;)
I’ve been using Cura, but contributing to the project has been a frustrating experience. It’s obviously not easy to run an open-source project, but if you’re relying on users to submit profiles, then you need to merge them in a reasonable amount of time 😢
I find Cura 5.5.0 works better with my Ender 3 S1 and Sonic Pad compared to Prusa Slicer/ Orca Slicer.

I've been getting slower and less reliable prints with the 5.x series of Cura and have mostly been using Prusa lately. It has significantly more tuning options, so it's easy to get lost, and also has more functionality.
Agreed. 5.3.1 was good, but 5.4 broke pretty much every profile I had.
I got fed up and switched to Prusa.
I no longer have Cura installed on my main computer.
Really picayune differences - doing one thing in Cura takes "extra" steps compared to Prusa, and vice versa. And grouping objects before centering is more logical, because specifying an action on multiple selected items should do the operation on each item, instead of trying to read the user's mind - what's logical to one person isn't for the other. And there's always "undo".

This is why i stopped using cura. It just fell behind. Orca slicer is IMO the best of every world.

Srsly? I have heard prusa slicer had good features cura didnt and u stick to this? This is nothing to make a video about.
Prusa is based on cura. Bambu on prusa. Orca on bambu. Cura is the reason why other slicers exists, so it is open source. And they taking from cura, not giving back. Oh wait, there is something. Joseph implemented his lastname in cura slicer xD
Incorrect, Prusa is based on Slic3r not Cura.
Slic3r and Cura are two of the original open source free slicers.
