I hung out there and admired this solid car with room for long legs and the car was quite impressive. Later, PV-544 Volvos and Amazons as well as 140 serials were tuned with 45 mm double webers and the C-cam and larger intake valves were machined into the cover etc. An infinitely strong car, e.g. the gearbox can withstand tremendous torque as standard. I wonder why Volvo has compromised on legroom, e.g. the V50 Volvo has no rear legroom at all? These Volvos also have good door handles like the V70 MK2 Volvo too. Works better in winter than the pull-out handle. Good Swedish! Now I'm driving my third V70, which is a MK3 2.5 AFV. Bifuel. DAS car too!

those aluminium wheels are definitely original to the GL, there were 2 or 3 different styles to choose from. the steel wheels came standard on the DL, they're good for swapping out for winter tires as the aluminium wheels suffered from pitting when exposed to the various snow melt treatments such as salt, calcium chloride etc. i wouldn't change out the head lights as the round ones were on '75 thru '77 model years. 1978 was the year they went to the square quads. the '79 264 GL i used to have, had the quad squares, so if you're looking to keep the car as original as possible that's something to consider. the GL came with all the bells and whistles: AC, power windows, power mirrors, leather seats w adjustable lumbar support, (drivers seat heated) although cloth seats were optional, 4 speaker AM/FM radio w cassette deck and power antenna (had to be raised with a button in the console), hand cranked sunroof, heated rear windshield, chrome grill and headlight bezels, central locking systems didn't come in until the late '80's something to note: the cooling system is a closed system in those things. they work great, but it's imperative to have all of the air purged out the system before running the engine. the original radiators don't have a cap so the only way to know if the system is full is by checking the reservoir. if there is any air at all in the system, the engine will tend to overheat and you'll have a real mess on your hands. you'll want to jack up the car in the front on the passenger side so the air can collect at the outlet of the overflow spout of the radiator and then suck it out with a vacuum pump. running the engine will not get all of the air out of the radiator edit: the 80's model 240 GL came stock with the B23 engine and automatic transmission on the US market, the 5 speed manual transmission (4 speed with an overdrive) was optional. the DL models were equipped with the B21 with either 4 speed manual, 5 speed manual or automatic. other engine options were a straight 6 diesel (only available for 3 or 4 yrs) and the V6 B27F which gave the car the 262, 264 and 265 designation. the 262 was the bertone coupe, the 264 the 4 door sedan and the 265 - the wagon... not many of the 265 wagons were built. maybe a handful. i've seen a few around Ramstein AB when they came out but none since. the 262 coupe first came out in '78 and was discontinued in 1984. there were also some two door V6 sedan GL's built but those are also pretty rare birds. the B27F was an aluminium block, cast iron sleeved engine and not many of them survived more than 100k miles. mine managed to put a little over 250k on it but was it stolen in Toledo and was still a good running engine at the time... i really liked the 200 series volvos..they ran from '75 thru late '80's and were probably the best they ever put out. although the 164 and 1800 were really cool in their styling

@@digiternst you aren’t wrong. We do try to practice safe winch activities. The good news is its an 8k winch pulling a rolling car. We may have gotten a bit complacent in this case.
These are great cars. I owned a 1981 244 DL (2.1l) for 25 years and covered 300k miles. We tend to get more rust here in the UK, so that eventually finished it off. I now have an 850, which I have owned for 30 years (220k miles). My view is that although the 200s were far more durable than the competition here in the UK in their day, the 850 is the slightly more reliable and durable car.
@@DeanofMachines Hate is a strong word. These things don't inspire that level of emotion...which is part of the problem. They do nothing well. Slow, mediocre handling, less than mediocre fit and finish. Average fuel economy at best. Bland interiors, poor seating, utter lack of style, no collector interest, ie; no value, unpleasant to work on, expensive parts for such an utterly base vehicle... As a dealer on the rare occasion I end up with an old one it invariably ends up as crush weight.
You and me both! I thought it was funny the first time I saw the car. Here in the United States it's very common to meet people from other countries. Either their parents or grand parents.
If you make it run well and fix the interior, this car would be $10,000+ here in sweden. Likely higher due to the lack of rust and the sunroof. You'd think we'd have a lot of them, but it's the other way around. They were basicly just scrapped or used in destruction derby-like races. And the quad lights were american market only so they are sought after as well.
You can ship it to the Netherlands first. This is around a 1000 euro’s (1200 dollar). From there to Sweden is easy peasy. I don’t think it’s thousands of dollars

Since this is a USA model if could be different but you know the new model came out in 1981 so that can not be a 82-83 as you mentioned, also the new long dashboard came in 1981. this Is a 1979 or 1980 I would believe. its a great find.
@@DeanofMachines yeah but there´s no way in any part of the world that this car was made like this in 1984, this is a typical 79-80 model with the dashboard also the same between the years 1975 and 1980 all over the world, the engine could be swapped from the original B21 to a B23 by any of the previous owners of the car because in USA the B23 was not around until 1983. There is a model called Volvo GLT 6 that was made 1979-80, it had the B27 engine just like the 260 models, the B28 was not around until the Volvo 760 in mid 1982.

edit: the 80's model 240 GL came stock with the B23 engine and automatic transmission on the US market, the 5 speed manual transmission (4 speed with an overdrive) was optional. the DL models were equipped with the B21 with either 4 speed manual, 5 speed manual or automatic. other engine options were a straight 6 diesel (only available for 3 or 4 yrs) and the V6 B27F which gave the car the 262, 264 and 265 designation. the 262 was the bertone coupe, the 264 the 4 door sedan and the 265 - the wagon... not many of the 265 wagons were built. maybe a handful. i've seen a few around Ramstein AB when they came out but none since. the 262 coupe first came out in '78 and was discontinued in 1984. there were also some two door V6 sedan GL's built but those are also pretty rare birds. the B27F was an aluminium block, cast iron sleeved engine and not many of them survived more than 100k miles. mine managed to put a little over 250k on it but was it stolen in Toledo and was still a good running engine at the time...
i really liked the 200 series volvos..they ran from '75 thru late '80's and were probably the best they ever put out. although the 164 and 1800 were really cool in their styling
The 240 is my favorite for sure. We have a couple 93 wagons that see regular use.
Is there any explanation why there is a country label from Czechoslovakia at the back? Beside that: great video, keep up the excellent spirit. Chris
No real explanation other than, sometimes here in the stats people put the stickers to show an area of origin or race.
I've done something similar about a week ago. Just got a 79 265 gle to save . There good cars definitely save this one man and enjoy
Right on!!
Looks great! Awesome find
Thank you very much!
love your vids, no diss here, legit worried, that seems like the worst place to stand in case of cable break! is the remote control cable longer? 10:14
@@digiternst you aren’t wrong. We do try to practice safe winch activities. The good news is its an 8k winch pulling a rolling car. We may have gotten a bit complacent in this case.
looking forward to part 2 👍
There might be some controversy!! Lol
The 240 will always be my favorite. I will say, I think newer cars are more reliable, just as a general statement.
You're good, man!
I appreciate that!
Can you pry out that anemic four-banger and drop in a 351 or a 400 cubic inch V8?
Anything is possible with generous donations!
Don't let that four banger fool u
LOL! Why? What horrid little cars.
Tell us why you hate them!
@@scottysgarage4393 That's rather sad. We've had good luck with increasing values for 240s. Normally we use the sedans to save the wagons

I actually thought it had a 2-tone paint job. Nope. Just lots and lots of dirt...
I was partially hoping it was 2 tone lol
Cool another project 👍, got to love a woman😊, that encourages her man’s addiction 🤗👍
It's a blessing and a curse!!!! This car will not be staying long with any luck. Fingers crossed!
Maverick wheels. This is a thing?! 5x108 in a common 17x7" steelie? I am pumped!
BTW, nice save on this car too...
Thank you! Maverick wheels aren’t a perfect fit but they are pretty close. Im still working on the details.
Are those the Maverick wheels on the 244 in your latest vid? If so, I like what I see.@@DeanofMachines
@@cfloren yessir!!! Expect a video about it soon!
How got CZ sticker(it´s Czech republic from Europe..five thousand miles to the East..this is side where sun rises up..) is a bit mystery fo me..
Its too bad it would cost several thousand to ship!
You can ship it to the Netherlands first. This is around a 1000 euro’s (1200 dollar). From there to Sweden is easy peasy.
I don’t think it’s thousands of dollars
@@Thomas1984. by the time its transported and paperwork and bonding fees, you’ll easily break 2k in shipping. Im willing to find out if youd like to foot the bill!!!
Since this is a USA model if could be different but you know the new model came out in 1981 so that can not be a 82-83 as you mentioned, also the new long dashboard came in 1981. this Is a 1979 or 1980 I would believe. its a great find.
According to the door its an 84. This car has had some paint work and restoration done at some point. Its possible someone mixed parts
Nice find!
I cant wait to share part 2!!!

The Amazon and 142 made an appearance on the channel about 2 weeks ago. They are extremely rough.
Oh no! You’ve made that box (EZK?) wet! Now it wont start.
It just likes being difficult!
11:56 - that white Volvo 142 / 242 on the left is a gem.
We have another video showing the condition of it. Its quite rough.
@@DeanofMachines thank You for response, I will take a look. I live in Europe and my friend had 2 240's Turbo 155 HP, I had six Volvos, my best were 131 PS 240 GLT "the Hornet" and 740 Turbo Intercooler manual with LSD, what a driftmachine. Greetings from Poland. 🙋♂
@@DeanofMachines GLTs and Turbos had different, sportier suspension, still classic Volvos but they have big balls. Sorry for incorrect language.
They look really good with the original wheels
If I had another wheel laying around Id rock the original
Notice when you high press wash you even wash dirt in between the rubberlists and the cromelists to the body sheet
You are correct my friend! We have a very crude wash setup so we try to take care of or drains and trim as much as possible
You should change your name to Valiant Dean!!
Great video!!
Thatd be quite the name change!
The place you got it from also had a red Volvo. Was that a 850 R? Also wurth saving. Love your videos 👌🏻👏🏻
That's an 850 turbo with a blown head gasket. It makes a brief appearance in one of our previous videos. Unfortunately not an R.
Why didn’t you get the white 242?
The white car is a 142. It was extremely rusty and has had many parts taken from it. I have a yellow 142 though!

Someone can buy them if theyd like!
What's the price on this one? Maybe intrested in an import to sweden😊
Apparently we are keeping this one! It is a channel favorite so far.
Hey Dean! US Quad lights alone are worth big money in Europe. Just cleaning this up would make it look $$$. Just do it! ;)

@@DeanofMachines Fun fact: It has a Czech Republic sticker! ;) Interesting...
Nice man i also have a Volvo 240 in good shape

TH-cam did not promote this to me and I am sad. I guess I'll have to just watch two eps back to back now 😊
Weird that yt didn’t share it with you but it seems to be getting some traction out there in the world. Go figure. Hope you aren’t looking for an episode today! (There isnt one ready due to scheduling constraints)

Interesting, it has a CZ sticker on the trunk meaning its from Czech Republic (Or Czechslovakia ?). You needed to have it when you traveled out of country.
That's REALLY interesting. Here in the US sometimes folks just put a sticker like that on their car. I have no history of this car being from overseas.
What was that blue car next to the 850?
That was another Opel 1900 wagon

I wonder what the story is
I thought I might drive a car just like that later in life, when I was a kid. Volvo build the best cars in Europe. Not Mercedes Benz, not BMW, which build the most gimmicky, overenigneered, overpriced playthings for the rich, but Volvo who build supreme quality, safety and beauty.
Im always impressed with how strong these cars are!! Definitely built well
Awesome! Please save the 850 too :D
I would love to! It needs a motor and I have no spares
I wonder if the owner could be traced here in the Czech Republic. The car either comes from here, or the owner was Czech. At the back is CZ - the Czech Republic
Anything is possible!
Nice Volvo 240 and a beautiful lady, what else would a man hope for 😊
She definitely hit the jackpot!
Also it looks like a good idea to store old cars under pine trees... nothing grows under them and the pine tar naturally seals the vehicle from the environment 😅
It seems to have done the trick on this one!
