So far the 4th island is the only place I like to run around. More vegetation , beautiful spring water falls, trees covered the sun and alien structures that feels like an alien structure. It all feels right for sonic nature.
Even if I still disagree that 2D and 3D should stay separate, I do agree that the 2D in Chaos Island heavily clashed with the open-zone approach. I wish there was an option where if you get in a 2D section, you could click the right stick to restore 3D movement and camera controls and get out.
I also really like Ares Island. The art direction is really good, the platforms that lead to the chaos emeralds look really cool, the enemies are fun to fight (except the shield enemies), and I just like the desert vibe in general. Fitting how one of my favorite islands is themed after where I live, that being the desert of Arizona.
Great video! I really respect your rankings and I'm glad you put Kronos as high as you did. My personal ranking of these islands would be: 6. Original Ouranos Island 5. Chaos Island 4. Ares Island (I know, it's a hot take) 3. Rhea Island 2. Kronos Island 1. Ouranos Island Revisited
I think Rhea nails the lonely vibe that frontiers was going for better than any other island, due to the lack of any other characters for 99% of the island, it really drives home that isolated feel, and I love it!
I honestly think Ouranos is the best simply because it has the smoothest terrain, making it the best place to run around. I wish it looked different but it is still about the best looking island. Chaos Island has the worst traversal because of the gaps between landmasses and the amount of 2D.
I couldn't agree more, Ouranos Island has a lot of space to move around and it's also intuitive to navigate, and the smaller number of minigames doesn't really bother me that much, and the music is a masterpiece for me, especially the Theme of Starfall Islands, and the island is very aesthetic for me (especially with cloudy weather). As for the Chaos Island, it’s quite difficult to move around (I just drop dashed through the mountains lol), and I couldn’t get to the part of the map where one of the Emeralds was located, because it had to be reached through the underground section, and I couldn’t find it, since it is not indicated on the open map and I think that one of the rails or springs should lead to this territory, also 2D sections there are too much and pretty forced but the visuals are varied and also beautiful.
Funny Since Ares is by far my LEAST favorite island. And the funny thing is Wyvern is my favorite boss of the game (excluding the DLC final boss obviously) haha. This is how I would rank them myself. 1: Oranous Revisted. 2: Chaos Island. 3: Kronos Island. 4: Oranous Island. 5: Rea Island. 6: Ares Island.
my ranking is the same as yours with the only difference is that i would have chaos and kronos island switch places. by the way am i the only one who wish rhea island was snow island, that would have looked gorgeous.
If you go into battle rush and simply ignore the enemies, you can explore the islands without the floating geometry and platforms, and they look AMAZING on PS5.
You're not far off. I've always appreciated Sonic's penchant for moving forward. I think the Sonic artstyle is too consistent nowadays. I'd love to see them vary it up from game to game. Give each one a distinctive look.
Hm, fair and valid points and opinions, i hope they do a better job with the Next Title. By the way, Superstars seems to be out now, I will look forward to your review.
My ranking: 1. Ares- The best designed island and the best progression pacing. F*ck Shark and Strider though. 2. Ouranos (The Final Horizon)- Great guardians, even better cyberspace stages then OG Ouranos, 3 additional playable characters and some of the best platforming challenges and map puzzles in the game. If the 5th trial was better thought out and Knuckles's glide had better turning with no windup animation, I would've put this at #1. 3. Ouranos- Best collection of individual content in the base game (cyberspace, guardians and platforming). The lack of variety and 0 pacing brings it down a bit. 4. Kronos- Kishimoto has explained he seperated Kronos, Rhea and Ouranos because playtesters thought too much content from the start will be overwhelming. I think it was a smart move. Having the first island being comparatively small is a good way to ease players into the vibe of the game. Overall solid, but it offers the least interesting cyberspace stages and platforming challenges. 5. Chaos- P much same as what you said. I used to dislike this island at first because too much 2D felt counter-intuitive to the game's appeal- freedom. Once I tried this island with the spin dash though, my experience became much better. With the spin dash I can skip a lot of the 2D and play these platforming challenges in 3D, which is visually jarring, but nothing I couldn't get used to. It's also filled to the brim with ramps to launch you everywhere. Essentially, the spin dash turned an island with restricted freedom into one with arguably more freedom then any other island. I'm still ranking Chaos island low because on a normal playthrough I'm forced to play it without the spin dash. Without the spin dash, I would've ranked it last place. 6. Rhea- Climbing the towers is fun, but the lack of content does unfortunately brings it down. This island IS fun for what it does offer, but because it's missing some meat I rank it last place.
Ares is the best designed island for sure, but the aesthetic isn't my thing. I probably gravitate to other islands more, including Chaos, because I like their look and music more
I think the real reason why it looks like sonic has sexual tension with knuckles is simply because his expressions when he’s flirting and expressions when he’s trolling look IDENTICAL. So it comes off like he’s flirting when he’s trolling.
I honestly would’ve preferred if that Rhea Kronos and ouranous were all connected as the first island. How I would do it is after your beat the original Kronos you can come back and explore the rest of the island and you could re fight giganto in the arena it was meant to be in rather than going back to the other area
Just hope the future, the next open zone have unique looking n fun islands instead of unreal engibe beta lookin ass islands. Along with well balanced challenges n polish boss fights
@@reubensalter8125 No, just no they weren't, especially with the pop in🙄. Tbf most open world games have pop in but still for Frontiers case, it's bad especially since ur moving at the speed of sound so most likely you'll slip up. Plus the islands just aren't that interesting. Ya cool n sad that the islands are the graveyard of Koco but I wish they added more interesting monuments that explore what the Kocos did n add it as an obstacle. The saving grace are the floating platforming but still wish they gave better interesting monuments for the ground lvl like how Chaos Island done by adding the broken Death Robots (Actually that island aesthetically looks good but playing the island is horrible cuz of the force 2d). For the next game, I hope they do a better job of adding more obstacles n unique stuff that makes each island interesting explore/speed around on instead of relying too much of floating platforms (Quote I don't mind floating platforms, just as long as it's built for the island and aren't overdone like how Update 3 done it).
I still say Chaos Island is the WORST of the bunch due to it's overuse of 2D sections. I seriously don't understand why Sonic Team insist of having 2D in 3D games. They have been doing this for the past 13 years now, and while it was tolerable in Colors and Generations, it's literally getting old now. Especially due to the fact that we will be getting more open zone games like Frontiers and 2D sections just ruined the flow of freedom. Let 3D Modern Sonic be 3D and keep 2D for...2D Classic Sonic. Stop with having 2D sections in 3D games for fuck sake.
But Cyberspace separates them. And because it just one island Frontiers gets off easy and fully 2d modern Sonic is really good - remember the Rush series? We need another game like that.

I agree with you too I love oranos
I really like the atmosphere of all the islands. I adore them all!
Aris island is best structured wise but visually is most blandest looking island in game. Chaos island looks a lot better
