I'm rewatching the beginning of this to figure out what's going on in my late game save file. I'm about an hour and a half through and man the fact that npcs stories actually change/continue as time progresses is amazing to me. Like that on student that used Joker to get good at baseball, makes his team manager suspicious, so she inadvertantly spreads a rumor that the dude got robotic implants and now (at the part where the sevens clock is working again) the dude has an actual metal arm. Like that attention to detail is so cool? And it matches and sets the tone for the world. Wow
What amazes me with this game was just how many intricacies and depth they managed to squeeze into it's narrative and characters, and with minimal dialogue and exposition on top of that.
i love how nazi's have literally descended and tatsuya's like "oh man, the jumping geezer? hold on guys i gotta go back and spread this rumour. yukino your fake boyfriend can wait."

I'm 50 minutes in... and something's caught my interest. Nobody batted an eye when our protagonists summoned their Personas, and it seems like the Velvet Room is public knowledge. Honestly, given the regular occurrence of weird shit in future games, I'm surprised this isn't the norm.
The first personas, meaning the first and Persona 2 heremostly, were very different best from those that follow startin with Persona 3. Mostly they were very much closer to their root as Shin Megami Tensei game. The supernatural presence was way more open. (Int he first Persaonna if memory serves the plot is litterlay caused bya corporation trying to exploit the supernatural. Shadows are very different (being in fact jsut aspect of the bad guy), Persona are more like Shin megami tensei demons int he way they work witht he weird dialogua and battle system (which they sort of brough back in P5 but in a veryyy different form), there's not the whole timetable aspect yet, the gameply is wy more of a calssic japneese RPG, Philemon is the master of the velvet room (he kinda completly disapear starting with Persona and it's jsut Igor and the atendant) and things are just more ball on the walls weird. (I mean as much as I like P4 and P5 there's a crual lack of burning zepelins, nazi robots and spaceships)
Normal people can't see Personas, so that's why it wasn't noticed. (This is implied in the Tatsuya Scenario in P2EP PSP when Tatsuya uses Apollo to burn something but the other people just see what he burned suddenly catching on fire)

Tatsuya said "I know they couldn't see the arm of my Persona Apollo" referring to non-Persona users as he burned something. Persona users are definitely more common in these games because of how Philemon and Nyarlathotep handed out Personas like candy back then.

That's because the MMO in P3 was never a reference to P2. In the original Japanese its called Devil Buster Online (which is a fictional game series that has exist in universe since Megami Tensei II) and the characters are Nakajima and Yumiko the hero and heroine from the original Megaten novels from the 80s. Nakajima being the reincarnation of Izanagi and Yumiko being the reincarnation of Izanami. (the literal Megami Tensei) They just changed the names in the localization which is why it makes no sense in context to P2.
What’s kinda funny to me is that here Joker is the bad guy and in P5 he’s the good guy although the public (in the P5 universe) many a time perceived him as the bad guy. Hehe.
I could never figure out how to start this quest but now that i've seen it I wouldn't have been mad if the entire game was just that, it's so peaceful???
My only issue with watching this as a movie is that I had to watch you pick Ginko instead of any of the other way better options. Like come on, we all know that silence is the best answer because Tatsuya just wants to fuck his motorcycle and nothing else.

I love all of the games, and p4-p5 might be the most fun to play, but none of the plots made me feel so strongly as that of innocent sin and eternal punishment

Spoilers below: Don't scroll if you haven't played or seen Persona 3 onwards. Wait, something happened 10 years before the plot of this game? That would be 1989... and the Kirijo experiment accident happened in 1999... The 12 Arcana shadows started appearing in 2009, and that's when they learned about Nyx... Trinity Soul happens in 2019... I'm starting to see a pattern here. Most of these things also seem connected to Kirijo somehow. Also, doesn't Joker making making rumors and wishes come true seem a lot like what Maruki was doing? It kind of reminds me of Yaldabaoth's manipulation too.
i tried playing p2 and at first i really liked it but the more i played it the more the gameplay drained my energy, preventing me from becoming invested in the story at all and leaving me with a headache. so... thank you, really. I hope I can come to love this game as much as everyone else.
@Rolling Lamb yeah, if you check the wiki you can see the stats difference. I only had a hard time because I didn't understand you could change Personas outside of the Velvet Room so I went back to it every time I wanted a new Persona. Also I made the final boss harder by not using my items because I read the wiki and saw over 10000 HP for the first phase and four 5000 HP phases... Then when I beated it so easily I realized it was just the tentacles' HP. Which you can hit all together with a multi target fusion spell. And I was playing on Hard.
I could relate to that. Game was hard but then I accidentally unlocked debug mode and got some personas for my characters and that's how I finished the game. I think my gameplay was 45 hours. I enjoyed this game when I was in highschool.
That is not the way either of them ever describes themselves. Nyarlathotep may in fact be separate, but nothing can truly be separate from humanity in this series because of the way the Sea of Souls works.

I played this for the first time on my PS Vita TV and thought my save data was deleted. I had a 28 hour save file that I magically discovered still resting in the memory card I used. I can now catch up on the story/characters in a few hours and get right back to my original save file and begin from there instead of all the way at the start. THANK YOU!

I only know P5 so this is funny and interesting. P5 is basically just a polished callback game, sometimes hinting or durectly referencing things Atlus had already done, as it maintains A LOT of elements from this game. I do like the fact that the Velvet Room is 3 amazing artists ... and Igor. xD Quite funny. But the concept of spreading rumors to make them real is terrifying... And awfully foreboding. I'd like to go through all games, mangas and animes to do analysis with comparisons and contrasts among each. Edit: Wow! Only 5 hours in and this game is already much darker than P5. And more complex. Woaaaah!!! This plot is wild! Aliens and Hitler?! Pfft 😂😂😂 14:28:00 Hooooooouuuu! There is no connection between the Joker from here or with 5. The only connection this game has are Persona 2 Eternal Punishment (Sequel to Persona 2 Innocent Sin), and Persona 1. Reverse personas are negative forms of the original Personas which make the first appearance in this game. If you have played Persona 4, it's the same with Yu's Izanagi and Adachi's Magatsu-Izanagi.

I wanted to go back and experience the older ones, so I watched P1 and now started P2 IS. After this is done, I'll watch P2 EP. Do you have any suggestions on what to do next? I'm thinking: all the dancing games and then Persona 5. I'm also considering the mangas (including the Naoto manga) and animes (P3 and P4, although unsure if I should watch both the animation and the golden animation or not; I think both because goldenanim is missing the main events, but is goldenanim (or its last episode specifically) after the p4golden epilogue? And is it before or after p4dancing?). I'm also planning to watch the P3 movies at some point too. Is there anything I'm missing? There are some more I thought of. Is P3Portable worth it or not (maybe the male route if there's anything extra? because the female MC is not canon, right? Not every movie is actually on these old persona movie descriptions because it's outdated, every movie I've made are on the playlist tho. Uhm. you have seen the majority of the Persona series. you've seen P3 FES The Journey, did you also see The Answer? sequel to The Journey. Persona Q has both Persona 3/4 routes which are somewhat different. Persona 4 Dancing is a sequel to Persona 4 Golden, and Persona dancing 3/5 are canon and somewhat related to Persona 3/5. Persona 5 dancing contain some spoilers for Persona 5, so you should do Perona 5 first then Persona 3/5 dancing. Persona 3 Portable male MC is basically the same as FES, but without 3d cutscenes and I don't have a movie for that, because it's the same thing. But with FEMC, it's somewhat the same but different as it has some new events and social links and I do have a full movie for that day by day. As for any other Persona games, no. That's pretty much it until they release Persona Q2. If you like Anime, go for it. I did watch both Persona 4 and golden but it was so rushed and you have to deal with that with Anime. I didn't bother watching 3 or 5 anime but I assume it's the same thing where they rush through the days. For the manga, I can't help you with that as I don't read those. but probably worth checking out.
It's been too long and that's way too much to take in. The best is just to google persona 2 Wikipedia for the specific characters/bio to see most of your questions answers. But you probably figured out most as the story progressed. I believe the whole bombing buildings was to create chaos and made people talk for things to become reality. Or it gave Joker power or something with the Oracle. Can't really remember much about Jun's dad. Other then he was created through rumors and became Nyarlathotep. Jun's mom is in here but not sure if she did get much backstory or actually be referred to as mom, but she returns in eternal punishment. Philemon screwed them over to see what the outcome was even he was aware of everything I think, so he reset time and p2 eternal punishment begins.
You are the fucking best. I loved Persona 1, 3, 4, and 5 and I really want to experience Persona 2's story. Sadly, the gameplay is just dreadful (for some reason I enjoyed P1's gameplay).

I can dislike a couple of things about the Persona games, but the attention to detail is so on point, the games are clearly made with a lot of love.

That's because the MMO in P3 was never a reference to P2. In the original Japanese its called Devil Buster Online (which is a fictional game series that has exist in universe since Megami Tensei II) and the characters are Nakajima and Yumiko the hero and heroine from the original Megaten novels from the 80s. Nakajima being the reincarnation of Izanagi and Yumiko being the reincarnation of Izanami. (the literal Megami Tensei) They just changed the names in the localization which is why it makes no sense in context to P2.
What’s kinda funny to me is that here Joker is the bad guy and in P5 he’s the good guy although the public (in the P5 universe) many a time perceived him as the bad guy. Hehe.

Wait, something happened 10 years before the plot of this game? That would be 1989... and the Kirijo experiment accident happened in 1999... The 12 Arcana shadows started appearing in 2009, and that's when they learned about Nyx... Trinity Soul happens in 2019... I'm starting to see a pattern here. Most of these things also seem connected to Kirijo somehow.
Also, doesn't Joker making making rumors and wishes come true seem a lot like what Maruki was doing? It kind of reminds me of Yaldabaoth's manipulation too.

i tried playing p2 and at first i really liked it but the more i played it the more the gameplay drained my energy, preventing me from becoming invested in the story at all and leaving me with a headache. so... thank you, really. I hope I can come to love this game as much as everyone else.

The PSP remake nerfed the enemy stats, so Hard mode is halfway between Easy and Normal.
It sucks.

@Rolling Lamb yeah, if you check the wiki you can see the stats difference. I only had a hard time because I didn't understand you could change Personas outside of the Velvet Room so I went back to it every time I wanted a new Persona.
Also I made the final boss harder by not using my items because I read the wiki and saw over 10000 HP for the first phase and four 5000 HP phases... Then when I beated it so easily I realized it was just the tentacles' HP. Which you can hit all together with a multi target fusion spell.
And I was playing on Hard.
I could relate to that. Game was hard but then I accidentally unlocked debug mode and got some personas for my characters and that's how I finished the game. I think my gameplay was 45 hours. I enjoyed this game when I was in highschool.
Let's be real: out of the original cast, maki got the greatest glow-up by far

The way I see it, humanity has had a palace ever since Persona 3. This leaves no room for humanity's persona, Philemon.
That's complete nonsense though, Philemon is a being independent from humanity just like Nyaranhothep.
That is not the way either of them ever describes themselves. Nyarlathotep may in fact be separate, but nothing can truly be separate from humanity in this series because of the way the Sea of Souls works.

I played this for the first time on my PS Vita TV and thought my save data was deleted. I had a 28 hour save file that I magically discovered still resting in the memory card I used. I can now catch up on the story/characters in a few hours and get right back to my original save file and begin from there instead of all the way at the start. THANK YOU!

I only know P5 so this is funny and interesting. P5 is basically just a polished callback game, sometimes hinting or durectly referencing things Atlus had already done, as it maintains A LOT of elements from this game. I do like the fact that the Velvet Room is 3 amazing artists ... and Igor. xD Quite funny. But the concept of spreading rumors to make them real is terrifying... And awfully foreboding. I'd like to go through all games, mangas and animes to do analysis with comparisons and contrasts among each.
Edit: Wow! Only 5 hours in and this game is already much darker than P5. And more complex.

There is no connection between the Joker from here or with 5. The only connection this game has are Persona 2 Eternal Punishment (Sequel to Persona 2 Innocent Sin), and Persona 1.
Reverse personas are negative forms of the original Personas which make the first appearance in this game. If you have played Persona 4, it's the same with Yu's Izanagi and Adachi's Magatsu-Izanagi.

Do you have any suggestions on what to do next? I'm thinking: all the dancing games and then Persona 5. I'm also considering the mangas (including the Naoto manga) and animes (P3 and P4, although unsure if I should watch both the animation and the golden animation or not; I think both because goldenanim is missing the main events, but is goldenanim (or its last episode specifically) after the p4golden epilogue? And is it before or after p4dancing?). I'm also planning to watch the P3 movies at some point too. Is there anything I'm missing?

Persona Q has both Persona 3/4 routes which are somewhat different.
Persona 4 Dancing is a sequel to Persona 4 Golden, and Persona dancing 3/5 are canon and somewhat related to Persona 3/5. Persona 5 dancing contain some spoilers for Persona 5, so you should do Perona 5 first then Persona 3/5 dancing.
Persona 3 Portable male MC is basically the same as FES, but without 3d cutscenes and I don't have a movie for that, because it's the same thing. But with FEMC, it's somewhat the same but different as it has some new events and social links and I do have a full movie for that day by day.
As for any other Persona games, no. That's pretty much it until they release Persona Q2.
If you like Anime, go for it. I did watch both Persona 4 and golden but it was so rushed and you have to deal with that with Anime. I didn't bother watching 3 or 5 anime but I assume it's the same thing where they rush through the days.
For the manga, I can't help you with that as I don't read those. but probably worth checking out.

It's been too long and that's way too much to take in. The best is just to google persona 2 Wikipedia for the specific characters/bio to see most of your questions answers. But you probably figured out most as the story progressed.
I believe the whole bombing buildings was to create chaos and made people talk for things to become reality. Or it gave Joker power or something with the Oracle.
Can't really remember much about Jun's dad. Other then he was created through rumors and became Nyarlathotep.
Jun's mom is in here but not sure if she did get much backstory or actually be referred to as mom, but she returns in eternal punishment.
Philemon screwed them over to see what the outcome was even he was aware of everything I think, so he reset time and p2 eternal punishment begins.

I loved Persona 1, 3, 4, and 5 and I really want to experience Persona 2's story. Sadly, the gameplay is just dreadful (for some reason I enjoyed P1's gameplay).

I find P1, and 2's gameplay as a weird snail race, but am glad that it was replaced with the P3 formula.
