- RefGuess is back! In this season, a select few Jomboy Media office members compete to gain points by guessing players based only on their Baseball Reference stat page. Each one guessed correctly is worth one point. If the player guesses all three correctly they advance to the trivia round. Guessing the trivia question correctly is worth two points for a grand total of five possible points per episode. The most points at the end of the season wins bragging rights and a The RefGuess Trophy.

As a Braves fan, I'm still scorned by that J.D Drew trade. The Braves only got him for a little bit and they gave up Adam Wainwright. This one stunk for sure.
Stop fucking spoiling it
That Shelfy hint was hilarious. He knew right away 😂
Matthews Jr had one of the best homerun robberies of all time, I think that was in his walk year as well
It was. I remember seeing it on Sportscenter that entire summer, coupling that with his best hitting season
i remembered the catch, thats why i was able to get it right
@reed5369 my first thought was "Milton Bradley? No, he signed with the Mariners. IS THAT GARY MATTHEWS JR!? IT IS!"
Honestly only reason why I knew he played for Texas and had gotten this one pretty quickly. Remember him not being too good with angels
Gaylor Perry
I absolutely hate that I got Gary Matthews Jr within 5 seconds. Just a reminder of another one of the many terrible contracts the Angels have given out.
As a Mariners kid that listened to the radio, I always remember hearing his name because of the “JR” making me think of Griffey haha
It can't just be luck right. What tf is going in the Angels front office.
I was the same way lol
@@WalkoffGrandslam It's not the front office, its Arte Moreno. Since he bought the Angels we have only gone for shiny names that were overpaid (Rendon, Matthews Jr, Vernon Wells, Hamilton, etc) or shorter term deals on players that were washed (Justin Upton, Matt Harvey, Scott Kazmir, Tim Lincecum, etc). All of these are driven by Arte's ego. Our current front office is the first one in 20 years thats actually been able to make moves that aren't insane.
exactly - it's the only reason I got it too. and after seeing this, I realized that the Angels signed TWO Rangers to huge contacts who flamed out and did nothing. sigh.
Literally the only reason i got Gary Matthews is because the only Ranger outfielder i could think of back then was him because i remember that one highlight of him Robbing Mike Lamb of a homer.
Kevin Brown
Was the first question in Horsehide Trivia in a recent week too.
theme idea: players who played in the league with a person who had the exact same name as them.
Chris Young
Chris Young
and the NHL’s 2 Sebastian Aho’s
Will Smith slapped his way to 4 straight World Series titles… or did he?
Too easy
Dibs on Jeff Robinson
Did the two Adam Eatons overlap?
Nobody got Gary Matthews Jr?? He had an iconic home run robbery that was replayed for years
One of the greatest catches that hardly anyone talks about
Had they included “*great home run robbery” in the stats, they might’ve gotten it! 🤪
Never thought I’d see the day I’m screaming Gary Matthews jr. in my car but that’s why we love refguess
Since you've got Gary Matthews Jr. this week, I will again suggest MLB dads for one week and MLB sons for another.
I got Gary Mathews Jr instantly. Remember him with the Cubs early on. Flashy in the outfield. I think it was very getable. His home run robbery is always in highlight vids from when he was with the Rangers
ah, yes, david john drew. who somehow instead of getting the obvious nickname of DJ Drew, somehow got his name mixed up and became known as JD Drew.
Guessing it’s the common occurrence when sharing a first name with his father, he went by his middle name. Then, with people already calling him “John Drew”, it would easily become J.D.
@@MrNbt3pgh yep that is correct. JD stood for "John Drew" and when he became a professional ballplayer they tacked his last name onto the end of his nickname. Just a weird coincidence.
I instantly knew it was JD Drew. He was my fav as a Cardinal until I realized who Pujols, Waino, and Molina was😂.
I mention this all the time but 1 great yr of JD Drew on the Braves gave the stinkin Cardinals 15 great years of Adam Wainwright. Still hurts my soul.
I remember Matthews because i use to play as texas a lot in Mlb 06 the show. I was proud of that one
JD Drew’s 04 is one of the better seasons by a guy in his only year with a team in recent memory. Up there with Beltre in Boston and Nelson Cruz in Baltimore.
I’d add Choo’s 2013 season. Had a historic OBP season in a down offensive era, and played a new position all year.
What's funny is that I remember both of those guys vividly and was absolutely sure that both of them were at those spots for 2 or more years. You know you had a good season when people have to assume you had more than 1 year because your season was that good.
@@ezioaltairacOBP second to Joey Votto in the NL and 4th overall (Miggy, Votto, Trout, then Choo)
Alfonso Soriano with the Nats in 06!
Yeah Nelson Cruz in Baltimore was kind of crazy but night and day when compared to Drew's. That man went off with the braves
As an Angels fan I thought the "hard" one was the easiest. Matthews Jr was the first in a long line of bad contracts the Angels signed since the mid 2000's.
my entire memory of Gary Matthews Jr as an Angels fan is that one time he stole home against the Dbacks, at least that's what i choose to remember
Gary Matthew’s Jr has arguably the greatest catch of all time. Idk how the guys don’t know who that is. I get not getting his numbers and guessing him but to not know who that is, is kinda insane. His catch is easily top 3 all time.
I remember going to see the Cardinals play the Giants the year after McGwire set the HR record. Of course, everyone stopped to watch him hit batting practice. But J.D. Drew is hitting just as hard as McGwire, and people didn't seem to know who he was.
I randomly remember Gary Matthews Jr. from MLB Power Pros on the DS. Always loved playing against the Angels when setting up your own playoffs in that game and he just sticks out. I don’t think it was too hard, he was a decent player and had a lengthy career that most of them seem to know, just couldn’t quite put it all together
If I had to guess who signed the first $100 million contract probably Kevin Brown with the Dodgers. But who else was screaming Gary Matthews Jr for that last question? 😂
Gary Matthews Jr! One of the greatest home run robberies ever! Off Mike Lamb.
Also the trivia question answer is Kevin Brown who signed with the Dodgers.
I got all three so quickly that I shocked myself. I'm surprised no one mentioned one of the greatest catches of all-time by Gary Matthews Jr.
I got Gary Matthews Jr., which is crazy since I'm terrible at this game. I actually thought he was a better hitter than that, but his famous home run robbery, the only thing I actually know about him, was in Texas.
As an aside, I think it's funny when the players are thinking of names and they stop on a guy who won MVP _(Jimmy was thinking about Josh Hamilton)_ with no MVP on the sheet. It's happened with basically every Giants second baseman; he'll be a light hitting base stealer with no MVP and people will still get stuck on Jeff Kent.
Only knew it was G Matthews Jr because I’m a rangers fan and he had one of the greatest home run robbery catches in mlb history, bro turned up with the rangers when I was a wee little lad
Jake Carl Everett played for the Red Sox and hit piss-missiles to the MOON, which he does not believe we landed on along with not believing the dinosaurs existed. Used to call him Jurassic Carl
He’s right.
I def knew it was Gary Matthews Jr. Being a Cubs fan. But he really is remembered for that catch in center field to Rob that homerun and that is pretty much it.
Damn. I thought of Endy Chavez and Gary Matthews Jr. for the last one and I leaned the wrong way haha
That was a great round I actually for the first time knew every single player I have watch almost every ref guess and i finally knew every player that you had on the video. Keep up the great programming I watch a lot of your content and wish I could be part of your guys team lol.
Can’t think of JD Drew without thinking about his freak injury with Atlanta. Jolly you should do a show talking about injuries injuries off the field.
Gary Matthews Jr. not only robbing Homers, but robbing perfect streaks 😂. And that trivia is Kevin Brown
best series y’all do !!
Shelfy claims to be a Phillies fan but needs Jolly to hold his hand and gift him JD Drew? For shame. For the trivia question, is it Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket legend, Kevin Brown?
It took me a little longer than the first two, mostly cause I couldn’t think of his last name, but I was fairly certain his dad was a coach who went by “Sarge.” Finally pulled the name out.
I remembered JD played for the Red Sox after my Cardinals but didn't know he went west first. I hated to see him go, but man getting Waino made the trade SOOOOO worth it.
I got all three very quickly. Medium was kinda tough. Gary Matthews Jr made that one sick catch I remember. Keep em coming like this.
Ill admit Im a red sox fan and is probably a big reason why I got medium so easy, but I was shocked an office full of yankees fans (roughly my age or older) couldnt guess JD Drew easier. I feel like if you showed me most starting yankees from those yers I could get it in an instant.
Being a bad hitter for your whole career and then getting MVP votes in your contract year as a 31 year old is storybook type stuff.
Usually the theme doesn't help me. I go teams and years first, sometimes I get it there, then I go position, then I look for notable stats. Wins, home runs, average, stolen bases, etc. I was stuck on the last one for about 30 seconds, then thought, well, what was the walk year? Got it immediately. I would NOT have gotten it without the theme this time around
Giambi may have been the easiest one yet.
Another edit. I knew nothing of Matthew's early days. Padres, Mets, Pirates. Maybe vaguely remember Baltimore. I also didn't realize he was 31 in the walk year, I thought he was younger
Gary Matthews Jr. made one of the best catches, if not THE best catch in centerfield that I have seen in my lifetime. It is up there with the Edmonds catch over his head. If you don't know what I'm talking about please go watch it right now
Nailed all 3 immediately! Surprised they took that long on JD.
I had Gary Matthews Jr on the braves because I had a card with him as a brave as a kid, but he got cut in spring training 😂
It's weird what guys do and don't stick in your brain as the years go by. Gary Matthews Jr. is one of those guys that do stick in my brain.
Congrats on the Schwab sponsor - stepping up the game!
I thought all three were pretty easy, but that’s coming from a Cardinals fan who lives in Pittsburgh. Got Gary Matthews, Jr. primary from his year in Pittsburgh.
Knew Gary Matthews immediately as a Rangers fan lol have his catch bobblehead somewhere
Got Giambi and Drew real quick. Matthews Jr. had me stumped until they said CF and I was like "oh, the HR robbery! That's Sarge Jr!" (Phillies fan)
Even as an Orioles fan, me getting that hard mode JUST off of his time with the Orioles is gross
I got Gary Matthews jr right away. I still remember being so upset that he got waiver claimed by the Pirates in 2001. I was too young to realize how bad his numbers with the Cubs were but picked him as one of my favorites on vibes alone lol
Joez comeback starts here and now
I will always find it hilarious that JD Drew's name is actually DJ Drew.
He also named his son so he would have the initials JD lol
LOL used hard on immaculate grid the other day and looked at his bbref afterwards./ Between that and getting medium almost instantly, what a meant to be episode of ref guess
I got Gary Matthews Jr, though I missed JD Drew. Don't go easy on these guys, they need to get stumped sometimes.
You could never go too hard on us Jolly
I still remember the night i first saw rhe Matthews jr catch on web gems. Not sure why its not talked about more with greatest catch ever
JD Drew felt impossible I even thought of Stephen lol this was a tough ep
I’ll never forget that insane catch Gary Matthew’s Jr. had.
The amount of times I get medium wrong but get hard correct. AGH lol.
screamed Matthews Jr at first glance at the stats but only because he was good the very first year I started watching more MLB and all I remembered of him was his glove
I hate that I got all 3 of these immediately. My inner nerd comes out with these
Anything Mid 2000’s to late 2000’s is my bread and butter when it comes to hitters at least. Because I started watching baseball in 2005, and I played a lot of MLB the Show back then. Like religiously was on MLB the Show 05,06,07,08,09,10 every day on franchise mode. So I also answered all of them quickly.
Lol iseen rangers 2004-2006 …my brain went “Centerfield?…home run robbery gary matthews jr??…ithought he stole more bases??..but cant think of anyone else”
The easy one made me think another RefGuess theme could be brothers of better know players
Got all 3, GMJ thanks to that last Mets stint. (I don't even remember him on the 02 Mets?!?)
Medium was the real hard one, I have Garry Matthews jr without problem because I remember him from the play he robbed a Home run doing a 360 in Texas.
Never heard of Gary Matthews Jr., but I got J.D. Drew immediately.
Wow can't believe nobody got Gary Matthews Jr. I got it a lot quicker than I did J.D. Drew, but I am a Rangers fan and we still celebrate his catch to this day.
You did not make it too hard, I got all of them pretty quickly. Matthews Jr. was a good one though; I probably wouldn't have gotten him if I didn't know him for being a poor Angels signing that got traded to the Mets and wasn't named Mo Vaughn.
No more hints, Jolly. I like competition.
I got Gary mattews JR the second i saw Texas to LAA. Because I saw a video made of him last week on a clip of the worst FA signings from the angels
As an Angels fan I knew it was Mathews Jr immediately. It feels good to get hard for once
I feel proud of getting these.
Got Gary Matthews Jr! Honestly couldn't believe it. I'm 50-50 on hards typically, but I think that was the sweet spot difficulty for the round
JD Drew will never slip by me in any trivia related to his year in Atlanta. Cost us Wainwright and one of the worst trades in all of MLB history.
not me screaming out JD Drew at my screen
I’m so pissed because I was thinking of the ‘08 Angels and said “Anderson, Hunter, and something Jr… wait, Garrett Anderson was Jr.” Fumbled hard
JD Drew had a hell of a career
Rendon gotta be on here Go Nats!
I got the first two within like 5 seconds but he actually stumped me this week with Gary Matthews Jr. Completely forgot about him.
That Gary Matthews Jr. home run robbery is the only reason I’d know the name of a mid 2000’s Ranger CF, and the only reason I would’ve won this round.
I immediately thought of Gary Matthews Jr but dismissed it because I remember him playing for the Braves. I was tricked! He got released before the season.
First time a hard has stumped everyone? For some reason he popped into my head right away, but I dismissed it because I didn't realise he played so long before Texas.
Gary Matthews Jr had the Catch of the Year on Sportscenter that's how I got that one
The reason i got matthews is cause i am a die hard cubs fan and i remembered having him on the team early in his career
Just casually here screaming the medium while the boys can't get it hahaha. One of my old favorites from those STL teams
everyone got it tho
@jolly can you do an episode of PITCHERS ONLY SEEING HITTING STATS
This would actually be 🔥
I got all 3! Still remember that insane catch by Matthew's Jr
I got JD Drew and Gary Matthews Jr but not Giambi 🤦🏻♂️🤣
I knew Matthews Jr just because of mlb power pros. I'm guessing the first 100 million dollar contract was kevin brown.
the Questions answer is easy if you love SRS, Kevin Brown
JD Drew was also drafted by the Giants in 1994, but didn't sign. So, he went to FSU
Can honestly say I've never heard of Gary Matthews Jr.
the second i saw the page i knew the hard was a jr but i just couldnt come up with the rest of the name
I got all three of these in less then 10 seconds. Rangers to angels was a dead giveaway on Gary Matthews jr
What does it mean when they were saying someone “one dotted”?
Kevin Brown i think is the first 100 mil contract. If its not him its Dave Winfield.
holy crap JD Drew
“I’m an impartial Yankees fan…. I mean Baseball fan”
I got Matthew’s but only because I’m a Rangers fan and I remember his ridiculous catch in center field
I guessed Gary Matthews jr right purely based on that catch he made for the rangers.
Best hr rob of all time
