The tricky thing with the on field plays is the angle we have from the TV is so different from what the ump actually sees. So my guess is Madrigal's helmet fell just right in the worst position it could for the ump
That last one especially falls into that camp. He looks out by a mile from the camera angle but you need the Umps position to see if he actually whiffs the tag.
And the audio too. On safe/out call the ump is looking at the bag to see when the foot comes down while listening for the ball to hit the glove. At least, that's what a broadcaster told me in a game I watched once
I think it would be fun to do this episode where the first shot they see is the umpire view. They make their decision AND THEN they get to see the TV view
@@rondomane Exactly! It's not bad thing to make the game entertaining for fans. And if a call goes wrong now and then, even a big one, that just adds to the lore and legend of the game.
Honestly, I wouldn’t really mind that, since bad/unfortunate positioning is usually the actual culprit of bad calls. It might actually do wonders for the perceived integrity of all sports leagues if fans realized that the official didn’t intentionally blow a call, but instead just ended up in the wrong spot and had a mess of legs block their view.
@@rileyneff1889 yeah I would like that but I feel people would just be like oh you should have been positioned over here (kinda the way "if I just did this in blackjack instead of what I did I would have _____" because they're always looking in hindsight)
Used to be a community little league umpire. It’s so much harder than it looks on TV. Sometimes the angle from the broadcast is just a better angle to see the play, and sometimes the only way to see what’s going on is being right there on the field. Being an umpire is a thankless job, and I respect a great deal of them for being as consistent and good as they are.
A big part of calling plays at first is sound. It’s very important to listen to when the ball hits the glove compared to when you see the runner touch the base.
@@AWood729humans have one set of eyes so it would be hard to look at both the base and then track a 90 mph throw trying to see when exactly it enters a glove in real time😂😂 look at the base, listen for the glove. replay can determine which millisecond the ball enters the glove haha
@@AWood729 yes but you can only look at one thing. And the ball popping the mitt makes a more consistent sound than the runner touching the bag so you look bag, listen for sound. It's not perfect but it's more reliable than anything except instant replay with a perfect camera angle.
As a former umpire for softball, the view on the field is SO much different than the view on TV, so it's completely understandable Jack got the one wrong. And Zo, I've never known any of the players names, or coaches for that matter. Just knew which small town was playing against the small town I lived in
I’m a hockey scorekeeper, and the thing about officials admitting they’re wrong just not to the public or the players is so true. During the intermissions I hear the refs talking a lot of the time, “dude, I totally should have called that tripping… I just - if he’d done a bit more, I would have called it, but I just-ugh.”
What a fun and engaging quiz! It's fascinating to see the different scenarios and challenges that umpires face on the field. Trying to decide who would be the better umpire really makes you appreciate the complexity and nuances of the role. Whether you're a seasoned baseball fan or just getting into the sport, this quiz is a great way to test your knowledge and understanding of the game. Thanks for putting together such an entertaining and thought-provoking video!
With the calls on the field I agree, but I've seen too many horrible calls on balls & strikes to totally agree. I would rather an automated strikezone be implemented than umps making multiple bad calls in 99.99+% of the games.
As an ump I can assure that angles are a thing, especially when calling balls and strikes. You see, the umpire is not centered with the plate, he's a bit to the side, in between the catcher and the batter. This makes calling inside balls easier but makes calling outside balls really hard because of parallax, untill you get the hang of it.
That 2k11 perfect game challenge reference brought back a core memory from watching that postseason ad with the gamer explaining how he studied the 2k player's scouting reports like he's on the team lol Y'all always have the most random baseball references and we love it
Imagine defending your wrong call as much as Zo did at that moment too lol. "Ah well if I see a great play and it's that close, it's 50-50 in my mind, I'm giving it to the defense." I mean...cool, I guess, but replay would prove you wrong 🤣
There was one of those behind the plate ump tests a couple years ago, I now empathize with anyone who has to call balls and strikes when Josh Hader is on the mound.
I was a little league umpire for a few years when I was in high school. Many times I was not looking and just confidently made the call. It taught me how to fake it till you make it
If Zo was an ump I can hear what people would scream at him: “Did you piss off your eye doctor???” “How can you have four eyes and still not see” “What do you mean based on the quality of the play” “Horseshit, I know you can’t see it but I’m sure you can smell it ya jobronee” “Wait guys ump forgot his Bobby pins”
I like he ball stirke call, however there are 2 problems, 1 there isnt a catcher who actually blocks our view and 2 this is in the incorrect positioning
The only one Jack got wrong the camera angle makes the ball look fair. The ump looking straight down the line has an easier time deciphering the call. Incidentally 10/11 is actually not a good score for umpires. They need to be 98% right.
Please keep up the content I really enjoy your guys stuff, I remember you guys playing jake and Jimmy in the park like 2 years ago🤣 you def some jomboy media vets now🤙
I had 8 out of 11, a lot of these were bang bang which I do like and I like the idea that you dont get a replay. The fair and foul bouls, I always call them fair if I'm unsure because you can always stop after and be like oh that was foul ok go back to bat, you cant do the same for foul to fair.
I was 10/11 on this. Random fact about myself: I was also 100% for every single challenged call in all 162 Cleveland Indians (yes, Indians) games in the 2022 regular season. I know you don't care. Just a self brag, was proud of myself that year
Played along with you guys. Got 8 of 11. Proud of myself. I used to be an umpire. I quit because I sucked. LOL. And the foul on the right field line looks fair even on the slow mo. So, I’m gonna chalk that up to the camera angle. I got one pitch wrong, and missed the pop-up on the slide at third. Not bad for a guy who quit the business cuz he sucked so bad. Of course, doing it this way, as a TH-cam play along is far easier. What got to me, and the reason I sucked so badly, is I anticipated too much instead of going with the play. If someone SHOULD have been out but wasn’t, I would sometimes call them out anyway. I didn’t suck so badly that I did it all the time. But I did it often enough that I knew umping wasn’t right for me. I do a great job armchair umpiring, as I did in this video (I think 8 of 11 is “great” considering the right field line play still looks fair). But throw me in the middle of the action on the field? Forget it. I’m a disaster.
The strike call simulator is a little poor since umpires typically line up on the inside side of home plate to call inside strikes more accurately. Outside calls are just a guess most of the time
Jack is already an ump. He has integrity whether the play is cool or not. Zoe has tunnel vision, and you can't have that as an ump. Zo would be great for the bookies/gambling Vegas machine.
Great video, I don’t watch baseball that Often, I missed two on the ball and strikes. I don’t expect plate umpires be perfect., from their perspective the baseball looks like a white blur. For baseball play calls, I missed the first one, I went with tie goes to the batter-runner, it appeared the ball and the runner arrived at the same time. The second fair or foul ball, where the ball landed on the third base foul line, I got correct, by calling it a fair ball, because foul line is considered in fair territory. The play where the runner popped off the bag I got correct, by calling out. The last fair/ foul ball, I got wrong, because the ball clearly landed in fair territory from the perspective shown. The play at the plate, I got correct, because the catcher got possession of the ball before runner cross the plate. That is key when it comes to plays at the plate. Overall, great video
Tried it myself. Got 6/7 just missed the last one which was an outside bottom corner that was just in. But at least i made the correct call over 6 other umps
