      @Sports Entertainment of America No, there's in between. The league and the umps/referees sometimes have fixed games. Not all of them, but sometimes. This is a known fact. But the players and coaches are not in on it. The only ones in on it are a handful of people over the years who have been caught shaving points or taking a fall. In general, players and coaches aren't in on it.

      The umpire enforced the by-the-book rule in the rule book, as he is supposed to. As a matter of fact, he is brave for finally calling someone out on it, because pitchers have been allowed to get away with this for too long. From experience, it is disruptive to the runner.

    • @taysomhill2841
      @taysomhill2841 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@playballtillyoucant7003 I don't even argue that Bleier definitely has a borderline sketchy set position and motion.. but it's the context that make it so weird here. Tons of pitchers have quirky motions. 90% of lefties do balk moves on pick off attempts to first base. Tons of batters take too long between pitches, or don't warm up directly on the on deck circle, or question a ball/strike call, etc. All things that, per the rulebook, are punishable. Dozens of these happen in every game every single night. Why did the umpire choose THIS instance to be a noble, heroic upholder of the sacred rulebook?
      It's like cops. They don't pull over every violation they see. So the one's they do pull over tend to be motivated by bias, mandate, having a bad day, or a personal vendetta.

    Stupid crap like this is why they need to clarify the rule. He comes to enough of a discernable stop that you can literally pinpoint where the stop is. Discretionary calls need to go away.
    "Discernable pause" isn't good enough. Tell the pitcher they must come to a complete pause of movement for at least half a second.

    • @playballtillyoucant7003
      @playballtillyoucant7003 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rule is extremely specific. It is three paragraphs long. You should check it out. By the way, "discernable" is nowhere in those three paragraphs. The rule states clearly in two separate places that the pitcher must come to a "complete" stop. In other words, no movement, period. By rule, the umpire made the correct call. Anyone who says "discernable pause" is incorrect.

  • @sawmill035

    Seems to be a lot of confusion in here. I see a lot of twitter-type ignorant comments about how the game is rigged or whatever, but no one bothered to check the rule book to see if the umpire actually made the right calls (Hint: he did). By the way, if you are making a mistake, is the person who called you out's fault if you keep making the same mistake? No, obvioulsy not. It is YOUR FAULT for not learning and adjusting.
    In any case, I'll quote a few excerpts from the 2021 MLB rulebook (couldn't find 2022, but this rule hasn't changed in decades at least).
    From Rule 5.07(a)(2):
    _Set Position shall be indicated by the pitcher when he stands facing the batter with his pivot foot in contact with, and his other foot in front of, the pitcher’s plate, holding the ball in oth hands in front of his body and coming to a complete stop. From such Set Position he may deliver the ball to the batter, throw to a base or step backward off the pitcher’s plate with his pivot foot. Before assuming Set Position, the pitcher may elect to make any natural preliminary motion such as that known as “the stretch.” But if he so elects, he shall come to Set Position before delivering the ball to the batter. After assuming Set Position, any natural motion associated with his delivery of the ball to the batter commits him to the pitch without alteration or interruption._
    Also from later in Rule 5.07(a)(2):
    _The pitcher, following his stretch, must (a) hold the ball in both hands in front of his body and (b) come to a complete stop. This must be enforced. Umpires should watch this closely. Pitchers are constantly attempting to “beat the rule” in their efforts to hold runners on bases and in cases where the pitcher fails to make a complete “stop” called for in the rules, the umpire should immediately call a “Balk.”_
    On each of the three balks, the pitcher never came to a complete stop. You can see the glove slightly moving on all three occasions. You cannot do that, and the umpire was right to call him out for it. I am shocked only by the fact the pitcher just completely ignored the umpire and kept making the same mistake over and over again. I can count on one hand the number of times I was called for balks in my 15 years of pitching. Every time I was called for one, that type of balk never happened again. It is really not that hard to avoid. There were a few pitches in between the ones called that were pretty close too, but the umpire probably felt bad and was a little lenient.

    • @luisportal7836
      @luisportal7836 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I can see him coming to a stop on every single one of those pitches. There is no rule on how long he has to pause for. This is a bullshit call on all three. He comes set and then starts his delivery. He doesn’t have to stop moving his head, just his hands.

      Only time I ever balked was first year of Babe Ruth league an my first appearance as a pitcher. I didn't know what "going from the stretch meant" 😂. My coaches did though an they kept letting me go from wind up while coach from the other team kept yelling.
      There was someone on base, I kept throwing from wind up cause my 13yr old butt didn't know better. I had only pitched in Little League.
      So they had a guy on base, their coach kept screaming "he has to go from stretch". I didn't have a clue what he was talking about so I kept pitching.
      As I got older I realized that dumb coach could have been sending his guys to steal every pitch, my coaches apparently knew that too an were not going to say a word. Looking back I wouldn't have either.
      So eventuality the home plate ump walked out to show me. I was like "ohhhhh, yeah I can do that". So I did. I wound up balking twice I think, I didn't know better until the inning was over an my coaches explained to me what the deal was.
      I moved a rock on one, didn't know better but it really bummed me out that their runners got to move forward. Maybe it was runner I don't remember it was in 1983. I know we won though and I made all stars that year an had terrible outings. Sports have taught me so many important life lessons an that yr in particular taught me a lot.
      We won the championship for league that yr but the only two games my all star team lost were the two I appeared in. I'm telling you, life lessons. Sports can be so important to forming a child. I could write a book on it.
