I’ve made this argument a million times with old heads who go on about how players these days don’t compare to players in there days. Yeah Larry, Mickey Mantle is great…nobody is arguing that. However, Mantle didn’t face 100+ MPH pitch velocities every single game and he surely didn’t see 90+ MPH Curveballs and Sliders. He barely saw fastballs over 95. Athletes are bigger, faster, stronger, and smarter than they ever have been due to Sports Science. That’s just how it is. Sports have been analyzed and broken down into every metric and it’s being used to essentially be bred into children. One day I’ll be watching pitchers throw 120 on the TV and telling my grandson that we rarely saw over 105 in my day.
It’s because of modern day supplements like Creatine. Anabolic steroids became illegal because they gave the players an upper hand vs the previous generations… so why would we not do the same for Creatine??
@@johnkelley502 Perhaps some of it, but that argument is still invalid due to the fact that you see the same advancement in Youth Sports as well. Kids are throwing harder, hitting further, and just overall better than when I was in Little League just 20 years ago. Sports Science combined with modern technology has broken down every aspect of every sport and given us data and real good insight on how it all works. We know what athletes should be eating, when they should be eating, when they should work out, how they should workout, how they sleep, everything. On top of that, we have pitching & swinging mechanics all figured it out. We have whole private facilities and special equipment dedicated to a specific sport for Youth/Professional players for development. They just didn’t have that back then. Back then it was just “throw the ball at the batter as hard as you can”.
@jordantyler8490 How about guys like Nolan Ryan in the 60s/70s? Although they didn't record pitch speeds often, and when they did, they measured the speed of the pitch 10 feet from home plate instead of straight out of the pitcher's hand... Nolan was recorded late in his career at 98 mph, and that specific pitch was thrown when he had a partially torn UCL 😅😂
Jhoan Duran's BREAKING STUFF tops a hundred. When you're throwing off-speed 10 mph faster than your teammate's gas (Joe Ryan, 92mph fastball), you're just playing in a whole different, incredibly unfair plane.

These pitchers can actually get strikeouts. Chapman can't even find his way to practice, let alone the strike zone. Also age, but I'm choosing to look at the fact that he's a bum who walked out on his team.
Baseball is not popular in my country, i know nobody in person here which know at least the basic rules of this sport. Once i watched a few matches and movies about, i started to like the game, when i was younger i thought the hitter was the most valuable position, but once i learned about these fastball specials lol, i began to like more and more the pitcher position. Its fun and hard to throw things where you want, at high speeds is even harder to be precise.
I hope Helsley can be as dominant in 2023 as he was last year... Guy was an absolute nightmare. Minus that last inning in the WC series when he was hurt.
For some reason, playoffs stuff is in its own little world and "doesn't count" for season stat purposes, even singleton events like pitches and home runs. You could hit a ball a literal mile and it wouldn't be considered a season record because it happened in the playoffs.
@@firestar8004 Probably is, but unfortunately it's how every sports league in North America does things. Postseason and season records are separate and ne'er the twain shall meet.
there are more hard throwers in the game today than ever before. Heck, today many starting pitchers are throwing 95 plus! There is nothing the batters can do that will give them more time to react. we are or have reached the limit of the brains ability to perceive and react to balls being pitched.
The reason you’re seeing a different in speed from what the on screen radar and STATCAST is saying is because they’re not measuring the same thing. The radar is measuring the speed of the ball directly out of the pitchers hand. STATCAST however, uses computers to digitally measure the complete delivery. Essentially it’s timing the ball and doing math. What you get is a way more accurate reading, because that is the average speed of the ball and pretty much exactly what you would see over the plate. Now, is .4 MPH going to make a difference in you being able to see the ball as a batter? Nope. Not at all. That jawn coming in HOT.
Let me save you guys some time. They all throw 103mph. The video never shows a slowest to fastest pitch order. It’s just 103mph for the whole video so not worth wasting your time on the video.
What's going on with Jasson Dominguez? Is "The Martian" going to play next year, or is he in outer space? 😂 It might take a Martian to hit against pitching like this! 😨
Man, throwing high 90s was crazy in the late 90s and early 2000s when I started to watch baseball. They were like a handful of people who touched 100

on the 103 pitches, the velocity graphic they use always says 102.8. It seems flawed. There was one that said 102.9, but that seems sus.
