His back injury was so severe that he virtually quitted training in 2019. The ranking makes no sense after that. In fact, I don’t think ranking’s ever made any sense for a monster like him.
I absolutely despise the part of the audience that is booing Zhang Jike during the medal ceremony. I can partially understand the booing when he kicks and demolishes the banners, but Zhang Jike fully deserved the gold medal after terrific play against Ma Long. I doubt anyone who were booing have invested only one tenth of the effort in their lives compared to Zhang Jike. So pay some God damn respect to one of the all-time greats in the sport.

Zhang Jike has magic hands and in particular his backhand is extraordinary. Ma Long is an aerobics champion. It’s like he’s using two hearts to power his body.
I just had to come back and watch this legendary battle and Zhang Jike's legendary kick after knowing he was having serious injury on his waist and was under tremendous doubt and pressure during this tournament. Especially after I learned how to use my waist to do powerful forehand loops I realized how important the waist is for pro TT players. Kudos to Zhang Jike, An amazing fighter.

See how many times Ma Long missed his powerful forehand to return easy balls, which seldom happened before. The new ball seems to be lighter with weaker spin, which makes it less predictable for the players. Besides, the ball sounded as if it was broken...As a result, both of them played very carefully and conservatively. I can't see as many heavy shots from both of them as before. The ball becomes slower, which is a problem for players with fast speed and strong power like ML, ZJK and D.O., meanwhile it might be good news for some other defence style players, e.g., Timo and Jun. As a comparison, see their match of 2011 Austria Open Final, or any other matches before the stupid new ball was in use.
I'm also a ZJK fan. I think the fact that ZJK's stepped down due injury was opportunity for ML to rise and gained his confident at world stages. If current ML will probably beat the prime ZJK in a world stage match. But if ZJK didnt step down then we wont see a ML like he is now. ML is the GOAT but ZJK will remain my only table tennis hero who inspired me to watch table tennis and made me wanted to play like him. ZJK was also the inspiration for ML to achieve what he's having now. They are both legends.
