New years 2012 i was hospitalized for a very rare form of pneumonia and almost died, when i came home after 3 weeks i couldn't do anything because I was still very sick and weak I'm 6'0 feet tall and weighed 110lbs when i came home. Anyways, i was pretty much bedridden for a month and just lay in bed watching all seasons of this show. Had a couple of broken ribs because I coughed so much so while watching this show was fun it hurt like hell when I laughed. The P-feiffer scene almost killed me haha
I am from Ukraine, but this show become my favorite. I have seen every episode maybe hundreds times😁. So funny, so comforting in "rainy" days when I miss my beloved Grandmomm and my aunt ,who pass away. This ladys reminded me how amazing they where and how I was lucky to have them in my life.❤💛💙
I've moved to USA on 2000 and have huge problem to communicate in to English , so I started to watch TV shows , every thing on the TV was so unique to me , so fresh and so bright , there was couple shows I've been tuned to Seinfeld , Fraisier , I'm mad about you , The Nanny and Golden Girls . I immediately fall in love with those girls , they reminded me some of my friends , neighbors, relatives from my back home . I started improve my language barrier so fast , was not frightened any more to go to shop alone , started to correct my pronunciation following Dorothy's speech and rebuke to others , I'm watching Golden Girls today too , it is not just only the writing is so super and sooooooo funny , but also all those talented actresses are so believable , so real , I knew people exactly like them . They are Golden Girls for real .
This will always be my favorite show. The comedic timing is perfection. My Grandma introduced me to it and the Golden Girls will always be special to me :)
I think this installment of the Documentary really hits the nail on the head. These characters weren't just some old women in rocking chairs. They were multi-faceted, youthful, sometimes tawdry, and appealed to so multiple generations. Even younger, I was drawn in to the show. I can only hope to be as wily and lovable in my later years. What really stands out is how this show, along the likes of Roseanne, really captivated their audiences with their portrayals of real life, or what life can be like if you live outside the cliche'. Age, locale, and economic status aren't restraints on optimism, comedy, and living a full life.

I'm amazed that it did so well on sat night at 9. I remember that was called the " dead man walking " spot for shows past their prime like the last yrs of growing pains & facts of life went to sat nights from weeknights.
It used to make me sad too, then Rue said the same thing in her book because she actually lived it. :P She lived with two women and they were all so different that they drove each other crazy. She remained friends with them but only because they stopped living together.
I was 25 years old and LOVED that show! Made me think differently about growing older. I watch the reruns now at 61 years old and it makes me laugh in a whole new way.

The Golden Girls appealed to all ages. I started watching when I was a little girl, watched as a teen and young adult. Still it’s one of my all-time favorite shows. The writing, the casting - It’s pure brilliance! Imagine if Betty was Blanch and Rue was Rose as initially intended? It wouldn’t have been the magic it was and they knew that right away.
Thank you for posting this wonderful documentary. I agree with the observation post 4 minutes that the show a comedic dramatization of love, warmth and loyalty. We feel that love when we watch it. How the writers and characters approached issues of life was almost like listening to a mentor. Such was the intelligence of the show. And the all age thing is absolutely true. I was in my 20s when I was introduced to the Golden Girls and I love the image of mature life the show offered.

Aw... No I think it could work. I find this idea of living very comforting as well, because I don't want to be alone if I am widowed or divorced one day. 4 people in the next phase of their life would work out nicely, as long as they were honest and decent people who are trustworthy. We just never get to hear about anyone who tries it, as well as their success stories. I know 2 older ladies like this that are roomies, and it has worked out for years. The more the merrier.
Women are doing it though. I've read so many success stories of women sharing their lives and homes together. This show inspired it all. I love this show & always have. I got hooked right from the pilot epidode.

When it originally aired in 1985 I was 2 years old at the time. So I don’t think I was watching it then but I started watching it when I was in elementary school 7 or 8 or 9 years old. I still love the show it’s just so funny.
It's sad that they had established their audience, found it was popular among the younger set, too, so they moved it from 9 pm to 8. And, in the process, it was tamed a bit too much. They had established their audience, there wasn't a bedtime, really, for Saturday nights-parents usually let kids stay up a bit later for such reasons.
I LOVE and identified with the fact that Dorothy is so much bigger than Sofia. At 5'10", I've always towered over my Mama, who is 5'4". Yeah, I grew out of her clothes and shoe size in junior high school. LOL
Did you see the episode where the alternate parents were there thinking the babies were switched at the hospital? As I recall, the other parents were quite tall and their daughter was short.
When I look at Golden Girls I see only lovely ladies dealing as best they can with life. No race is a factor. The ensemble of women made this show.. The writers were very honest and deliberate.

Claws, and all the 70's and 80's shows with a bit of late 60's like Family Affair, with Buffy and Jodie. All In The Family, Carol Burnet Show, Twilight zone, Facts of Life. Even the theme song to the shows back then were positive and everyone sang along to the Jeffersons and Cheers right. look at the list of EXCELLENT television at that time! How did we go
from that level of talent, acting, writing to reality tv is beyond me.
That was great tv...and Golden Girls were on top! I miss that level of
entertainment!
