    The fact that Terry Hughes left as primary director, and the fact that NBC moved it from 9 pm to 8 pm in the fall of 1991, were obvious factors on why The Golden Girls ended on May 9, 1992!

    There might be a show someday equal to the Golden Girls but I don't think any of us will live long enough to find out. I think the Golden Girls could be a sitcom that comes along once every 20 years and most of us encluding myself simply won't live long enough to see one equal to it.

    I was always a bit surprised when Rue said, here, that "Bea didn't want to be part of an ensemble show any more. She was used to being the star of the show." There were a few things Rue said later on, like that or that Bea wasn't happy she didn't win the emmy the first year. Bea always said those comments were totally inaccurate. Plus, those two were good friends. I think Rue may have misunderstood some of Bea's motives. I think she just didn't want to overstay the welcome of the show.

      Not really. I mean all the Norman Lear shows in the 1970s did that. Golden Girls was just another great show that balanced comedy and drama the way Norman Lear did but even better imo.

    Actually, seasons 1 through 6 of the Golden Girls were in the Top Ten. But NBC in the 1991 - 1992 season moved the show at 8 p.m. which made the show dropped to I think number 30 in the ratings and tied with In The Heat Of The Night. I Bea wanted the show to end with grace and dignity and not wait for NBC to cancel the show on its own. I think Bea really made the right decision. I think part of her reasons for leaving the show were due to health reasons. For example, her voice was changing and she put on a lot of weight during the seventh season. In the seventh season her clothes became baggier for her. Bea is my favorite character and to remember Bea as she was in the first season, thin with a strong Maude like voice.

    • @lacecocoa6272
      @lacecocoa6272 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But I think her weight fluctuated cuz the show Maude ( season 1-4)she was the same size she was in season 7 of golden girls. She started losing weight in season 5 and 6 of the show Maude. And then all through the show Golden Girls she was very slender until season 7. I don't think she actually got sick until like 2006 or whatever when she starting to get really really skinny and thin. she developed throat cancer but I don't know how long cancer lays dormant in someone's body but I think her weight just fluctuated

    • @MsQuartermaine
      @MsQuartermaine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lace cocoa I haven't re-watched Season 7 in awhile, but I didn't get the impression that her health was declining. Not at that point, anyway. As for her weight, I thought her Season 7 weight was still less than it was on Maude.
      I wonder how long she was sick for. I know she stopped performing on stage in 2006, and that is also the year she couldn't make it to the Paley Center event due to health reasons. But I wouldn't be surprised if she had been sick for a lot longer. :(

    • @lacecocoa6272
      @lacecocoa6272 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MsQuartermaine well maude the show was made in the 70s.Golden Girls didn't start until the mid-80s so I just believe that Beatrice Arthur (built like Princess Diana tall and athletic built)in her mid-forties started gaining a lot of weight. I won't say she was overweight but some people said they feel like she was when she was on the show Maude.I feel like after the show (maude) during the 5th and 6th season she lost all the weight and she was at a healthy weight.over the course of the Golden Girls it look like her weight fluctuated sometimes she was just like skinny and then other times she was super thin so I don't really know.some women like Janet Jackson, princess Diana and other women I've seen have that same problem. I can also use my sister as an example her weight fluctuates can go from being skinny,thick and then super skinny. I don't know how cancer works but I think she probably got cancer around 2005-2006 maybe.I don't think she had it when she was on the show The Golden Girls. That show ended in 1992 there's no way she could have had cancer for Seventeen years. She didn't die until 2009 so that would mean she probably got cancer around 2006 or 2005 and she was trying to fight it and it ended up defeating her. as you( we) get older our voice is not as strong as it is in our youth. That also happens with age,your body kind of deteriorates whether we want to be honest or not. it can be in a good way or bad way. I also think because she was a smoker and back then people did not know that smoking cigarettes was bad could cause cancer but it wasn't a known thing back then. Just like nowadays lot of people smoke marijuana we don't know what kind of side effects that can have on the body in years to come. So cigarettes just took a toll on her voice as well as her aging.

    • @lacecocoa6272
      @lacecocoa6272 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MsQuartermaine I also want to say that all the women on the show The Golden Girls were either in their sixties or seventies at that time when the show ended. she probably had health issues but I don't think her health issues at that time was cancer. the talk show host Oprah Winfrey her weight definitely fluctuate. I think she's a good case study for that sometimes Oprah Winfrey went from being( she's never been a skinny woman.) slim thick to fat.I was looking at some of Bea Arthur plays when she was on Broadway( 60's and 70's as well as rue mCclain) and I think her normal weight is season 1 of Golden Girls. that's how she was built. We get older our metabolism slows down so we pick up more weight.

    • @MsQuartermaine
      @MsQuartermaine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lace cocoa According to Internet Movie Database, Golden Girls writer Marc Cherry shared in a book that for the 7th episode of Season 7, Bea had to pre-tape her scenes due to a medical issue which required surgery and a month off. So perhaps that was related. But I hear ya in terms of weight fluctuation.
      Honestly, I did not see any problems with her weight until the cancer (and I assume cancer treatments) started eating away at her. I remember Rue said when hugging her in 2008, Bea was so fragile. :(

  • @kendallrivers1119

    Bea was right. It's always better to go out on top. Everybody Loves Raymond did the same thing. The show was still the number 1 comedy on tv at the time and it was as funny and as fresh as ever but Phil Rosenthal and Ray decided to go out while the show was still beloved instead of being cancelled or drawn out to death and losing all the quality like The Simpsons, NCIS, Law & Order SVU, Grey's Anatomy etc.

    Still watching in 2024🤣 Although I never rewatch the finale, it’s too sad. Also I feel the storyline with Dorothy and Lucas getting married was too rushed. It would have been better if they had of introduced Lucas earlier in the season and gradually built up to them getting married.

    they should have recast the "Dorothy" role with another actress, it's not like that sort of thing wasn't done before, I recall at the time reading about Lauren Bacall being considered as a replacement for Bea Arthur, now that would have been rather interesting, then the "Golden Girls" could have tried to stay on a bit longer in it's current format, if it didn't work, it didn't work, far better than having married
    off "Dorothy" to that "Hollingsworth" character played by Leslie Nielsen, I always felt that was a rather idiotic storyline, I think fans would have really wanted "Dorothy" to finally get back together with "Stan" just saying

      Greg Rak: I disagree, I think certain ensembles are set and you can't mess with the chemistry. This is one of them. Lauren Bacall? I can't imagine! I think it would have thrown the whole thing off. I also think it should have ended when the show did when Dorothy left to be married. Though I think she could have taken her mother with her! Golden Palace was not funny imo, it just wasn't the same..... it couldn't be without one of the "girls". The four women had an unbelievable certain something, it doesn't happen often. The only other show I laughed as hard at was Barney Miller, another great show with an ensemble that just clicked.
