I work on a reach truck in a freezer currently at -20 the best way to get through these jobs is to have a purpose when going to work. Know that this job is not going to last you forever its hard on the body and mind but if you go in there with a mindset of being the best worker and moving up or sayin u will be there for 2-3 years to get your money up or eliminate debt it becomes easier. Staying here long term was never my plan though I was paying off debt and saving 5-6 months on emergency funds. I now have a business I run on the side. I’ve started to invest my money into real estate and I’ve bought a couple atms that I’ve put in barbershops I’m making a little over 1200 a month off of these assets. I’m going to keep investing in real estate until I have enough properties to cover all my monthly expenses and then I will be leaving my company here for good and just focus on my business and no longer the owners in which I’m working for now
Best advice ever I started as a order selector when i turned 20 I instantly knew what kind of position those jobs were expected of. First job i lasted 3 yrs before the company got bought out and went too shit and hrs got cut then I went to a new job where I lasted 6 yrs and had to leave because my health was not at is best that job honestly used up my body like nothing and I was top picker overall in that warehouse for quite awhile until I couldnt no more... Basically Im saying is when you at these jobs is get your paper up pay off your debt and get the fuck out of that job because being a order selector once your older isnt going to be pretty

Gee Qew Its impossible to follow safety standards and run enough production to make you're incentive. I've tried and I can only run a 105 "safely". At the DC where I work, 130% is the goal, that's the cap for incentive pay. Wanna make that $300-$500 extra a week? Fuck the rules. Watch out for Assest Protection.

I've been selecting for around 8 years. Been at Sysco, GFS, CVS, and US Foods. If you want to do this type of work, just go to Sysco and make as much as you can. GFS is a close second but CVS and US Foods is garbage. Turnover in this field is crazy. Every warehouse has their own culture but generally, you don't even take time to know someone's name until they make rate(100% Production). My biggest gripe about this job is the treatment. They treat you like a low-class worker and refuse to see it as skilled labor. Then they complain about people not making rate or walking out of the job during a busy thursday shift. There's a new trend all these companies are trying to pull. Calling us "Industrial Athletes" or "Get Paid to Work Out". Bitch, please. Pay me like one of these professional athletes or cut the crap. That being said, I like picking. I take pride in my boards(pallets) and have passed my running days. It really depends on the comp plan of the company whether running is worth it or not. At Sysco, you're making bank. They feed you, they pay you well, they have good jacks and keep them maintained. But they hired you to pick and you will pick your ass off. At CVS and US Foods, they want to you be janitors, wrappers, piece pickers(fake selectors), battery technicians, and other bullshit they can find if it can save them a buck. It's all bullshit to cut cost. These are some of the things new selectors need to watch out for. Pay in this industry is going up, but slowly. Lots of managers I've talked to simply say, "The new generation of kids don't want to work." I call bullshit. Old or young, we all want to make money but one thing's for sure, younger guys have more opportunities. Why break your back in 5 years picking cases when you can go to school, get an IT degree, and smoke guys in the warehouse? My current company spends 6-8 grand on each new hire. That includes all the training, drug/background testing, etc. All for these guys to quit in 2 weeks. Hmmm, how about spending those 6-8 grand and paying the current selectors who actually want to stay? It's part ego-driven. Upper management can't stand seeing guys on the floor making more money than them. Well, they should get off their lazy asses and pick some cases then. Lastly, I believe it would take 50-100 years before we even worry about automation. Amazon is at the head of this "problem" but that's because they have the money to spend. That also doesn't affect "real" selectors aka case-pickers. Building warehouses to accommodate machines is a lot tougher and more expensive than humans and it will be a long time before this field stops existing. The pressure of newer bodies not wanting to work this job, along with the high turnover have slowly pushed for better pay. Just don't utter the word "Union" or you'll quickly find yourself on the shit-list.

I worked at US foods and it was garbage brother. They set you up to fail. They didn't even take the time to train us, just showed us a couple videos on day 1 and on day 2 let us run wild without any knowledge. We had to literally figure it out and ask the veterans there when they had a spare second or two to share some secrets with us to make the rate. The headsets never worked, the same with the ryder jacks. We also had to also carry a stack of order stickers as we drove to apply on the product. We had a lot of people from Sysco come in as well. Worse thing is, is that I was being overworked and hurt my back one night selecting. I had a week off and they still tried to get me in for light duty. I refused and upon my return got fired! Fucken pussies, a week before I got hurt they told me they knew they were overworking me including the other two new guys and they were gonna let us go home after 8 completed hours so we don't burnout. And look what happened lol. If I went back to selecting I know I would make the rate this time. Yea the work is for true warriors but what makes it hard is the graveyard schedule. It interferes with your relationships. If it were during the day even if it were 12 hrs I'd be back no question.
Currently working at Stop and Shop where it's local 25, Teamsters. Shits cash, union makes sure there's money, healthcare, and pension so all I really worry about is selecting right. Honestly not bad at all working there, but since it is union literally everything operates off seniority. Plenty of o.t., plenty of benefits, and plenty of money. Can't really complain

Orderfilled nights for 2 years before becoming a night shift loader for 3 more. Orderfilling put me in the best shape of my life. Loading kept me there. Orderfilling in the heat of summer will teach you a lot about yourself. Watching 20 people come in as new hires and seeing all but 2 quit within a month. Knowing that you're the only one from your new hire class still there 5 years later. Takes a certain kind of person to do this and it gets old the older you get.

To all those moaning about guy jumping off, clearly never worked in warehouses where you get in trouble if you don't achieve your targets. A lot of people jump off at my place, if you follow the rules and do it safely, you may as well start looking for another job as you may not stay long as your performance will be reflected in that.

I was a order slector for 5 years and can speak for myself stay away from these type of jobs get a CDL or something else there is no future in these type of jobs. Companies only see you as a number and after you get hurt burn out they will fire you in a heart beat. I worked 16 hours shifts in busy season there was no regular time to clock out from 1:30pm until the job was done some times 9:00 am and we still had to come in the same day. They would give you a write up if you fail to keep the average rate no matter how many hours you worked. fking nuts the money was good but your back can only hold so much beating until it gives out.

I use to work in albertsons warehouse in the freezer as well very easy and comfortable equipment to pick and now i work at nicholas and company and its a little different we pick with stickers wich takes more time but i also think its more effective

Have to be in shape for it I average 24-25 hours easy 40 plus at publix that's walking going slow faster guys average more I work smart not fast never got hurt eat well and get 3 days off a week and once a month I get 4 days off a week. It's not that bad if you find a good company we get free hot lunches every day cook in a cafeteria. To be honest ull get tired off it trust me gets bored. I'll do this one more year move on to bigger and better things.

I worked out at Walmart DC in Nevada while going to EMT school when I got my emt job offer call at work I finished my pallet left it on the forks and walked tf out felt great don’t miss this work, and to the guys doing this thank you cause most people wouldn’t. Order Selection is a trade , I been with GFS for 9 years now , We all know how hard is the order selection position ...... thanks to order selection It was possible to make 120 k in one Year overtime was there and of course INCENTIVE paid per case selected. Worked as Order Selector for about 5 years , definitely I missed the chance to make real money!!!
damn Gordon is paying like that? I worked with a guy at C&S that made 120 in a year but that was on SWAT all year long. The most I made there was almost 70 but that was in my own warehouse all year and i only ran for 7-8 of those montha
It’s all about time management and efficiency. Get your order quickly, sign on quickly, get good pallets quickly, know the shortest routes to your state aisle, looking for the next pick slot when you are picking the previous case. Know where you can make time, and where running like crazy is feasible. I’ve worked for the same company for 7 years now, I’ve picked all parts of the warehouse from grocery to freezer. The guys who “run around like nuts” never last, and if they do, they’re on light duty half the year from having a fucked up back. Believe me, trying to get done so you can piss off in the break room every night takes its toll on your body in a short amount of time. We had to pick 443 minutes in 8 hours, and I would make sure to be going fast enough to get done, but not so fast as to injure myself. I also tried to pick my orders and always have my jack moving when in coast mode. If you can do that and still get cases stacked and moved onto the next pick slot, you’re golden.

where I pick it's all high quantity picks. your pallet is complete after stopping in 2 to 6 locations because each stop you are picking multiple layers of the same case. they even disabled coast function on our Jacks. it's more of a hazard than a benefit when every stop you pick 20 to 120 cases. but when your doing all pick 1's coast is key
That must be nice, our orders only go out like that during holidays, but during the regular year you can stop at as many as 200 locations for two full pallets. Lots of tiny shit cases like chocolates, cigarettes and tobacco. I hate stacking small crap like that.
I clean and organize the freezer for selectors so I'm in 10° -20° all night, every night. At least these guys can stay warm. But honestly the reason I won't select is they have no home life and I got a kid so I need my daddy daughter time.
Whether you're doing this or anything else, it's not your job that makes you a man. And everyone deserves respect for making an honest living, whether it's janitorial or something much higher on the pay scale.

That reason, more often than not, isn't because they're unintelligent. Good luck to you if you're doing this.. i quit after six months. I don't believe most of these people commenting on youtube about how they are hitting 130% -200%.. that's bullshit unless you're packing totes or something because if you're building pallets on double pallet jacks you'll be lucky to hit 100s. The only guys hitting 100+ are Union guys who get the easy stuff (but they paid their dues). I've seen the list showing people's production many times, not ONE hitting 100, mostly in the 70s and 80s. Even Union guys' list you see maybe a third hitting 100s.. barely. Freezer guys its a different story. Anyways prepare to work til 7am, 16 hour shifts, sleep 4 hours and get back to work.. although that happened to me only a couple times. I've never been so depressed but had so much money in my life. 10grand in the bank account depressed as hell my entire life revolved around that warehouse. There are guys in there 20+ years they don't even know their kids because they spend their entire life holed up in that warehouse. I've been doing it for almost 2 months now for HEB already looking for another job screw this although the money is good but still I already feel depressed about it and manu friends of mine have done it as well and ended up leaving but my respect to those who actually go far with it though
Yeah they try to sell you on it having “great pay” but it’s really not “great”. If you are a single 23 year old guy with no kids and minimal expenses, you’ll have more money than you know what to do with. Imo this is why it’s easy for people to get caught up in the pay, as you’re easily making much more money than a lot of people your age you know who are just starting off in their careers. There are guys who can pull 200’s and make ridiculous money doing it but those guys are few and far between and the average selector is anywhere between an 80 and a 150 which is a range of about 16 an hour to 30 an hour. Honestly from what I’ve seen most guys never make it higher than 120-130 no matter how long they do it, it’s almost physically impossible. The older you get the more of an average paying job it becomes, most people your age are making as much as you to do a lot less work, the only difference is you’re still doing the intense labor. Most of the people that say they “like it” are also not telling you the truth from what I’ve seen. People will say that but then bid into other jobs right after they say that. Overall it’s a really good temporary job, especially when you’re younger, but as a long term job it’s fairly dead end.

as far as the pay goes I've never heard of 20k a year for a order picker in a frozen warehouse. here n Washington it's easy to finds jobs that pay above 20 n hr plus OT
The warehouse i worked in was -50 in meat and dairy and -25 in bakery. I dont miss the job, only miss being paid each week. Some of my shifts were over 24hrs straight, it was a cold nightmare of a job for a kid out of highschool

I work at Americold for 2 years now. It’s been very very bad, not because of anything about selecting but it’s the fact that we get sent home when there’s no more work. Sometimes 4 hours into our shift sometimes 6 sometimes 3. It sucks.
We have to get 80items a hour to keep the job and 120+ a hour to get a bonus witch put u around 17$ a hour. We also have to scan the barcode above the item and sticker the box
RICO DA DON Not bad, but percentages can vary greatly from warehouse to warehouse. I seen people come from warehouses pulling 210% to around 150% at another. Same amount of effort just different time given for the job.
I do this work in a freezer. You earn every penny. Anyone thinking about working in a Wal-Mart DC as a picker better get their shit together and be ready to do what this guy is doing for 12 hours straight with enough of a break to shovel a few spoons of food in their mouth
I work at a warehouse too and boy did I think that we only used to vocalet system. I start out at 120 percent but I can never end the day with 100. It's always between 70-90 depending on how fast I burn out. 🤣
I work in a freezer and wear glasses. Every time I step out my glasses inevitably condense up.. which is super annoying. I have thought about contacts but not sure if they'd do the same? Anyone else have this 'problem'and how do you cope? Have been looking for some sort of spray to counteract the condensation but no luck. Stay frosty
Def. go with the contact lenses! I never had a problem with fogging or condensation. If you use reading glasses too, try to get multi focal lenses. I don't need reading glasses anymore with them.
I worked in forklifting before, Counter balance, Order Picker, Etc, I couldnt last 3 months, people thought I was "Weak" but in reality, I already had 8 years of experience in Canadian Air force branch, Just because you resign a job quickly doesnt mean your lazy and weak, in my case it only means that I am an experienced professional military member not a forklifter. Note for everyone: Find what your good at, find where you can stay or had stayed longer and then do that Job, You must follow your heart, I am not a good Forklfter worker but I already proved to everyone to be a fine soldier!
Guy's phenomenally fast operating the truck & responding to the voice-pick/doing the picking. Must be paid per item. defo a job for the quick or the frozen, mind. Moving a conventional "steering wheel" LLOP would be far slower. I'be worried about denting the racking though. He's lucky he doesn't have to stack the items in an optimal way in one of three or four roll cages, though, that slows you right down
Made 70k in this field last year. Covid helped A LOT. Worked 70-80 hours a week for about 7-8 months straight. Fuck the freezer though. Waaaay to cold for me.
I work as an order selector at Sysco. We have printers and scanners, we label each package, and I'm picking around 700 cases a night. Some guys are at 1000-1500. It's not a bad job, I just look at it as 10 hours at the gym. It really is crazy how quick you have to be, and it's more exhausting than concrete work, that's for sure.

I had this job in 2000 at a very young age, made decent money but had no life at all. No weekends off, never 2 days off in a row, had wed and fri off. I was as strong as bull but nowadays there too much opportunities to be working like this. Boring too, repetitive, its all muscle memory no brain.
I’m a new hire been working there 3 weeks( in grocery so I deal with 3 pallets 2 now) since I’m training. But I’m no where near that high in production( if your pallet is at a standstill your not producing my trainer said). I just wanna know what it takes to get that fast I’m still learning stacking and it’s a lot tbh. Which items go there and how to create an nice even pallet? $60,000 a year to be an order picker?!! That's £46,000 here and order pickers are lucky if they get more than £20,000 a year, and that includes frozen ambient.
Most of the order selector jobs get paid pretty good. Problem is, it is a very physical job that most people aren’t prepared for. It’s typically paid based off performance, so that could be the difference of making $15 an hour to $32 an hour. Freezer pay typically is only about .50¢ extra an hour.
I just started sysco 3 weeks ago and Im at 40% Im trying to get to 60℅ then chill and get some experience. The problem I have is on pallets over 150 (im still in dry) I dont know what my next step is to getting the higher% im not looking to hit 100 soon
I worked freezer and in pack off at 32 degrees all the time..I loved my job and cant stand to work in amy other setting warehouses like the hot or even air conditioned ...too much dust..atleast in a cold setting the dust is frozen..lol
FitMotivation it depends on how hard you work. If you’re moving fast you won’t want many layers. If you’re new, you probably will start off with quite a few. I always taught my trainees to over dress in layers then take some layers off as they find out what works perfect for them based off their work style and how their bodies handle the cold. Then again I taught for the freezer but same would apply for those temps. But something I always recommend for any environment would be composite toe shoes. Not as heavy as steel toe and it also doesn’t get as cold as steel toe. Make sure it is a shoe and not a boot. You want to stay as flexible and light as possible to perform this work.
I'm still stuck in the cooler. there's one order we pull that no matter how many times we tell them, they won't fix it. it's a cheesecake batch. 120 cases on one pallet. so heavy it caves in on itself. no matter how you stack it. got one today. 117 cases with 24.5 minute goal time. stacked it perfect. wrapped it several times still. second to last aisle the cases started collapsing. grabbed last case and as I was headed out. she started leaning more and more. then boom. entire order flopped over. that's the cooler for you. p.s. think they'll fix it now. lol
+sam art lol what I did was try to level the weight out. make sure the weight was dispersed evenly through the pallet.(of course killing my time but with this batch nobody cares about anything but getting it to the door.) then I pu cardboard down and wrapped it after the third aisle. thing was squared out gorgeous looking and chest height. but wrapped it tight. then every few aisles i wrapped again. by the last aisle it was I'd say...7 feet high. all chicken, bout 60 cases of 58 pound chicken. 10 cases of 24 dozen eggs, milk, creamer, lord knows what else. I think the lightest case I pick on that order is 40 pounds. anyway, like I said, I literally just, caves in. I'll have to snag a picture of one sometime. or get yall a video.

I worked for mclane in newnan, we were the worst mclane in al dcs lol highest turn ovr rate too. i ended up leaving after seven months, nnot cause of job, mainly management was very bad
i tried many of those types of office jobs, could never be able to work at one for longer than 3 months they are all so boring. i would rather pay no to go to work at most of them.

I lost 75 lbs in less than a year doing this. Built muscle, too. But, working in a freezer can be PAINFUL, especially when your sweat starts to freeze and it feels like your hands and feet are being stabbed.
Just stay motivated, that’s the best advice I could give all my trainees. Also know that it is a skill that requires a lot of cases and going through the picking motions a lot to get good at it. Always think about efficiency. Many selectors waste too much time with the amount of steps they take, how fast they get in and out of the pick slot, time from their last pick slot to their next. Efficiency is king, stacking technique will develop with time.
there's nothing like a scanner at the wrist, it talks to you, and shows you exactly what it is shows the number of cases, and what they are shit I couldn't imagine doing it with paper or headset that is horrible

Yeah I did that at a ice cream plant order selecting now I work in transportation at a wearhouse going on routes order selected for years needed to try something new after doing driver helper at coca cola during a busy time for them transportation is a lot more fun when you're out doing deliveries
currently doing this job for a year before my masters degree to pay for it, 90% of people at where I work are severely depressed. This job can earn you good money very quickly but can take your soul if you stay too long.
@EE 98 You'll be expected to hit a certain target per day, as long as you hit that and turn up on time you'll be kept on. Though keep in mind the targets are hard to hit. Have a target amount of money you want to save in mind and live cheaply until you get that, it will keep you focussed on days you want to quit the job. Good luck brother.
Man I do this for a smaller ice cream company and we don't get paid shit ($10/hr to start, with vets not even getting to $18), and our work environment is insanely unsafe. Our racking is broken, frost everywhere (some places the roof leaks so we get ice mountains). I broke my ankle last summer because the throttle on a jack stuck AND it had no brakes engage when the handles lifted so boom there went my ankle between it and a high lift at full speed. Only reason I work there is because it's the best summer job I can find while in college.
Tom CFC Well the best thing is dress in layers because if you work hard enough you might find you get hot and you definitely don't wanna sweat in a freezer environment. If your hands get cold what I did was purchase a smaller pair of gloves to go under my big ones. Other than that it just depends on the nature of your work whether you will get really cold or not.

Tom CFC Yeah I wore a hat like the guy in the video but if it's really cold you may want a hooded sweatshirt you can add to keep your neck warm. We didn't have headsets like they do so it wasn't difficult to put a hoodie on and take it off really quickly. Anyways best of luck it isn't all that bad once you're accustomed to it! That is as long as your work environment is safe anyways lol

That's weird NO LABELS. those pallets must be fucked up , wonder how they load pallet in order of stops for driver??? Plus how do you check the product with code and stop number. Really weird. I pulled orders in 1987-1993. And we loaded the pallets better than what I see, nothing seems to be interlocked with a cubed pallet. These guys just toss boxes anywhere really weird. The drivers must love this system

I work on a reach truck in a freezer currently at -20 the best way to get through these jobs is to have a purpose when going to work. Know that this job is not going to last you forever its hard on the body and mind but if you go in there with a mindset of being the best worker and moving up or sayin u will be there for 2-3 years to get your money up or eliminate debt it becomes easier. Staying here long term was never my plan though I was paying off debt and saving 5-6 months on emergency funds. I now have a business I run on the side. I’ve started to invest my money into real estate and I’ve bought a couple atms that I’ve put in barbershops I’m making a little over 1200 a month off of these assets. I’m going to keep investing in real estate until I have enough properties to cover all my monthly expenses and then I will be leaving my company here for good and just focus on my business and no longer the owners in which I’m working for now
Best advice ever I started as a order selector when i turned 20 I instantly knew what kind of position those jobs were expected of. First job i lasted 3 yrs before the company got bought out and went too shit and hrs got cut then I went to a new job where I lasted 6 yrs and had to leave because my health was not at is best that job honestly used up my body like nothing and I was top picker overall in that warehouse for quite awhile until I couldnt no more... Basically Im saying is when you at these jobs is get your paper up pay off your debt and get the fuck out of that job because being a order selector once your older isnt going to be pretty

I've been selecting for around 8 years. Been at Sysco, GFS, CVS, and US Foods. If you want to do this type of work, just go to Sysco and make as much as you can. GFS is a close second but CVS and US Foods is garbage. Turnover in this field is crazy. Every warehouse has their own culture but generally, you don't even take time to know someone's name until they make rate(100% Production).
My biggest gripe about this job is the treatment. They treat you like a low-class worker and refuse to see it as skilled labor. Then they complain about people not making rate or walking out of the job during a busy thursday shift. There's a new trend all these companies are trying to pull. Calling us "Industrial Athletes" or "Get Paid to Work Out". Bitch, please. Pay me like one of these professional athletes or cut the crap.
That being said, I like picking. I take pride in my boards(pallets) and have passed my running days. It really depends on the comp plan of the company whether running is worth it or not. At Sysco, you're making bank. They feed you, they pay you well, they have good jacks and keep them maintained. But they hired you to pick and you will pick your ass off. At CVS and US Foods, they want to you be janitors, wrappers, piece pickers(fake selectors), battery technicians, and other bullshit they can find if it can save them a buck. It's all bullshit to cut cost. These are some of the things new selectors need to watch out for.
Pay in this industry is going up, but slowly. Lots of managers I've talked to simply say, "The new generation of kids don't want to work." I call bullshit. Old or young, we all want to make money but one thing's for sure, younger guys have more opportunities. Why break your back in 5 years picking cases when you can go to school, get an IT degree, and smoke guys in the warehouse? My current company spends 6-8 grand on each new hire. That includes all the training, drug/background testing, etc. All for these guys to quit in 2 weeks. Hmmm, how about spending those 6-8 grand and paying the current selectors who actually want to stay? It's part ego-driven. Upper management can't stand seeing guys on the floor making more money than them. Well, they should get off their lazy asses and pick some cases then.
Lastly, I believe it would take 50-100 years before we even worry about automation. Amazon is at the head of this "problem" but that's because they have the money to spend. That also doesn't affect "real" selectors aka case-pickers. Building warehouses to accommodate machines is a lot tougher and more expensive than humans and it will be a long time before this field stops existing. The pressure of newer bodies not wanting to work this job, along with the high turnover have slowly pushed for better pay. Just don't utter the word "Union" or you'll quickly find yourself on the shit-list.

I worked at US foods and it was garbage brother. They set you up to fail. They didn't even take the time to train us, just showed us a couple videos on day 1 and on day 2 let us run wild without any knowledge. We had to literally figure it out and ask the veterans there when they had a spare second or two to share some secrets with us to make the rate. The headsets never worked, the same with the ryder jacks. We also had to also carry a stack of order stickers as we drove to apply on the product. We had a lot of people from Sysco come in as well. Worse thing is, is that I was being overworked and hurt my back one night selecting. I had a week off and they still tried to get me in for light duty. I refused and upon my return got fired! Fucken pussies, a week before I got hurt they told me they knew they were overworking me including the other two new guys and they were gonna let us go home after 8 completed hours so we don't burnout. And look what happened lol.
If I went back to selecting I know I would make the rate this time. Yea the work is for true warriors but what makes it hard is the graveyard schedule. It interferes with your relationships. If it were during the day even if it were 12 hrs I'd be back no question.
Currently working at Stop and Shop where it's local 25, Teamsters. Shits cash, union makes sure there's money, healthcare, and pension so all I really worry about is selecting right. Honestly not bad at all working there, but since it is union literally everything operates off seniority. Plenty of o.t., plenty of benefits, and plenty of money. Can't really complain

Orderfilled nights for 2 years before becoming a night shift loader for 3 more. Orderfilling put me in the best shape of my life. Loading kept me there. Orderfilling in the heat of summer will teach you a lot about yourself. Watching 20 people come in as new hires and seeing all but 2 quit within a month. Knowing that you're the only one from your new hire class still there 5 years later. Takes a certain kind of person to do this and it gets old the older you get.

To all those moaning about guy jumping off, clearly never worked in warehouses where you get in trouble if you don't achieve your targets. A lot of people jump off at my place, if you follow the rules and do it safely, you may as well start looking for another job as you may not stay long as your performance will be reflected in that.

I was a order slector for 5 years and can speak for myself stay away from these type of jobs get a CDL or something else there is no future in these type of jobs. Companies only see you as a number and after you get hurt burn out they will fire you in a heart beat. I worked 16 hours shifts in busy season there was no regular time to clock out from 1:30pm until the job was done some times 9:00 am and we still had to come in the same day. They would give you a write up if you fail to keep the average rate no matter how many hours you worked. fking nuts the money was good but your back can only hold so much beating until it gives out.

Have to be in shape for it I average 24-25 hours easy 40 plus at publix that's walking going slow faster guys average more I work smart not fast never got hurt eat well and get 3 days off a week and once a month I get 4 days off a week. It's not that bad if you find a good company we get free hot lunches every day cook in a cafeteria. To be honest ull get tired off it trust me gets bored. damn Gordon is paying like that? I worked with a guy at C&S that made 120 in a year but that was on SWAT all year long. The most I made there was almost 70 but that was in my own warehouse all year and i only ran for 7-8 of those montha
It’s all about time management and efficiency. Get your order quickly, sign on quickly, get good pallets quickly, know the shortest routes to your state aisle, looking for the next pick slot when you are picking the previous case. Know where you can make time, and where running like crazy is feasible. I’ve worked for the same company for 7 years now, I’ve picked all parts of the warehouse from grocery to freezer. The guys who “run around like nuts” never last, and if they do, they’re on light duty half the year from having a fucked up back. Believe me, trying to get done so you can piss off in the break room every night takes its toll on your body in a short amount of time. We had to pick 443 minutes in 8 hours, and I would make sure to be going fast enough to get done, but not so fast as to injure myself. I also tried to pick my orders and always have my jack moving when in coast mode. If you can do that and still get cases stacked and moved onto the next pick slot, you’re golden.

where I pick it's all high quantity picks. your pallet is complete after stopping in 2 to 6 locations because each stop you are picking multiple layers of the same case. they even disabled coast function on our Jacks. it's more of a hazard than a benefit when every stop you pick 20 to 120 cases. but when your doing all pick 1's coast is key
That must be nice, our orders only go out like that during holidays, but during the regular year you can stop at as many as 200 locations for two full pallets. Lots of tiny shit cases like chocolates, cigarettes and tobacco. I hate stacking small crap like that.
Would have loved that. EVERY order we picked had about a hundred different types of product/case/size/shape. Often more than a hundred.
I clean and organize the freezer for selectors so I'm in 10° -20° all night, every night. At least these guys can stay warm. But honestly the reason I won't select is they have no home life and I got a kid so I need my daddy daughter time.
Not everyone works 12 + some people I’m my warehouse only do a couple hours cause the pay is good most do like 6-8 that’s it while others do 12+

You're right. There are millions upon millions of people worldwide with low-skill jobs who are doing it for one reason or another. That reason, more often than not, isn't because they're unintelligent. Anyone can fall on hard times and everyone doesn't live in the same set of circumstances, so to call someone unintelligent because they don't have a fancy job title is stupid.

Good luck to you if you're doing this.. i quit after six months. I don't believe most of these people commenting on youtube about how they are hitting 130% -200%.. that's bullshit unless you're packing totes or something because if you're building pallets on double pallet jacks you'll be lucky to hit 100s. The only guys hitting 100+ are Union guys who get the easy stuff (but they paid their dues). I've seen the list showing people's production many times, not ONE hitting 100, mostly in the 70s and 80s. Even Union guys' list you see maybe a third hitting 100s.. barely. Freezer guys its a different story. Anyways prepare to work til 7am, 16 hour shifts, sleep 4 hours and get back to work.. although that happened to me only a couple times.

I've been doing it for almost 2 months now for HEB already looking for another job screw this although the money is good but still I already feel depressed about it and manu friends of mine have done it as well and ended up leaving but my respect to those who actually go far with it though
Yeah they try to sell you on it having “great pay” but it’s really not “great”. If you are a single 23 year old guy with no kids and minimal expenses, you’ll have more money than you know what to do with. Imo this is why it’s easy for people to get caught up in the pay, as you’re easily making much more money than a lot of people your age you know who are just starting off in their careers. There are guys who can pull 200’s and make ridiculous money doing it but those guys are few and far between and the average selector is anywhere between an 80 and a 150 which is a range of about 16 an hour to 30 an hour. Honestly from what I’ve seen most guys never make it higher than 120-130 no matter how long they do it, it’s almost physically impossible. The older you get the more of an average paying job it becomes, most people your age are making as much as you to do a lot less work, the only difference is you’re still doing the intense labor. Most of the people that say they “like it” are also not telling you the truth from what I’ve seen. People will say that but then bid into other jobs right after they say that. Overall it’s a really good temporary job, especially when you’re younger, but as a long term job it’s fairly dead end.

The warehouse i worked in was -50 in meat and dairy and -25 in bakery. I dont miss the job, only miss being paid each week. Some of my shifts were over 24hrs straight, it was a cold nightmare of a job for a kid out of highschool

I work at Americold for 2 years now. It’s been very very bad, not because of anything about selecting but it’s the fact that we get sent home when there’s no more work. Sometimes 4 hours into our shift sometimes 6 sometimes 3. It sucks.
We have to get 80items a hour to keep the job and 120+ a hour to get a bonus witch put u around 17$ a hour. We also have to scan the barcode above the item and sticker the box
Target its 200 pieces an hour 2000 pieces for the whole day at a 10 hour shift.
But we get 21 bucks an hour
I love this kind of work pallet jack is the funnest part of my day riding around on it I pick fast production rate be like 173%
RICO DA DON Not bad, but percentages can vary greatly from warehouse to warehouse. I seen people come from warehouses pulling 210% to around 150% at another. Same amount of effort just different time given for the job.

I work at a warehouse too and boy did I think that we only used to vocalet system. I start out at 120 percent but I can never end the day with 100. It's always between 70-90 depending on how fast I burn out. 🤣

I work in a freezer and wear glasses. Every time I step out my glasses inevitably condense up.. which is super annoying. I have thought about contacts but not sure if they'd do the same?

Def. go with the contact lenses! I never had a problem with fogging or condensation. If you use reading glasses too, try to get multi focal lenses. I don't need reading glasses anymore with them.
I worked in forklifting before, Counter balance, Order Picker, Etc, I couldnt last 3 months, people thought I was "Weak" but in reality, I already had 8 years of experience in Canadian Air force branch, Just because you resign a job quickly doesnt mean your lazy and weak, in my case it only means that I am an experienced professional military member not a forklifter. Note for everyone: Find what your good at, find where you can stay or had stayed longer and then do that Job, You must follow your heart, I am not a good Forklfter worker but I already proved to everyone to be a fine soldier!
Guy's phenomenally fast operating the truck & responding to the voice-pick/doing the picking. Must be paid per item. defo a job for the quick or the frozen, mind. Moving a conventional "steering wheel" LLOP would be far slower. I'be worried about denting the racking though. He's lucky he doesn't have to stack the items in an optimal way in one of three or four roll cages, though, that slows you right down
Made 70k in this field last year. Covid helped A LOT. Worked 70-80 hours a week for about 7-8 months straight. Fuck the freezer though. Waaaay to cold for me.

I work as an order selector at Sysco. We have printers and scanners, we label each package, and I'm picking around 700 cases a night. Some guys are at 1000-1500. It's not a bad job, I just look at it as 10 hours at the gym. It really is crazy how quick you have to be, and it's more exhausting than concrete work, that's for sure.
I made the comparison to concrete work because I've done it before, and is regarded as one of the most physically demanding occupations

I had this job in 2000 at a very young age, made decent money but had no life at all. No weekends off, never 2 days off in a row, had wed and fri off. I was as strong as bull but nowadays there too much opportunities to be working like this. Boring too, repetitive, its all muscle memory no brain.
I’m a new hire been working there 3 weeks( in grocery so I deal with 3 pallets 2 now) since I’m training. But I’m no where near that high in production( if your pallet is at a standstill your not producing my trainer said). Most of the order selector jobs get paid pretty good. Problem is, it is a very physical job that most people aren’t prepared for. It’s typically paid based off performance, so that could be the difference of making $15 an hour to $32 an hour.
Freezer pay typically is only about .50¢ extra an hour.
It's thanks to Unions that they still make so much.
I work for save a lot dc, u can make 70,000 with over time and perfect attendance. Our top selectors make about $27 an hour.

I worked freezer and in pack off at 32 degrees all the time..I loved my job and cant stand to work in amy other setting warehouses like the hot or even air conditioned ...too much dust..atleast in a cold setting the dust is frozen..lol

FitMotivation it depends on how hard you work. If you’re moving fast you won’t want many layers. If you’re new, you probably will start off with quite a few.
I always taught my trainees to over dress in layers then take some layers off as they find out what works perfect for them based off their work style and how their bodies handle the cold. Then again I taught for the freezer but same would apply for those temps.
But something I always recommend for any environment would be composite toe shoes. Not as heavy as steel toe and it also doesn’t get as cold as steel toe. Make sure it is a shoe and not a boot. You want to stay as flexible and light as possible to perform this work.

I'm still stuck in the cooler. there's one order we pull that no matter how many times we tell them, they won't fix it. it's a cheesecake batch. 120 cases on one pallet. so heavy it caves in on itself. no matter how you stack it. got one today. 117 cases with 24.5 minute goal time. stacked it perfect. wrapped it several times still. second to last aisle the cases started collapsing. grabbed last case and as I was headed out. she started leaning more and more. then boom. entire order flopped over. that's the cooler for you. p.s. think they'll fix it now. lol

+sam art lol what I did was try to level the weight out. make sure the weight was dispersed evenly through the pallet.(of course killing my time but with this batch nobody cares about anything but getting it to the door.) then I pu cardboard down and wrapped it after the third aisle. thing was squared out gorgeous looking and chest height. but wrapped it tight. then every few aisles i wrapped again. by the last aisle it was I'd say...7 feet high. all chicken, bout 60 cases of 58 pound chicken. 10 cases of 24 dozen eggs, milk, creamer, lord knows what else. I think the lightest case I pick on that order is 40 pounds. anyway, like I said, I literally just, caves in. I'll have to snag a picture of one sometime. or get yall a video.

I lost 75 lbs in less than a year doing this. Built muscle, too. But, working in a freezer can be PAINFUL, especially when your sweat starts to freeze and it feels like your hands and feet are being stabbed.

Just stay motivated, that’s the best advice I could give all my trainees. Also know that it is a skill that requires a lot of cases and going through the picking motions a lot to get good at it.
Always think about efficiency. Many selectors waste too much time with the amount of steps they take, how fast they get in and out of the pick slot, time from their last pick slot to their next.
Efficiency is king, stacking technique will develop with time.

Computer woman tells u what aisle to go to and what slot to go to, u read a 3 digit check string and she verifies it and tells u how many to pick
there's nothing like a scanner at the wrist, it talks to you, and shows you exactly what it is shows the number of cases, and what they are shit I couldn't imagine doing it with paper or headset that is horrible
I just started a job like that but we have pallet Jack's we ride on. I'm looking for warm boots but able to work 10-13hours in... -10 to -30
Whatever you do, DO NOT skimp on boots. Go with Timberlands or Merrels. Cheap boots will give your aching feet and will disintegrate with this type of work.

Yeah I did that at a ice cream plant order selecting now I work in transportation at a wearhouse going on routes order selected for years needed to try something new after doing driver helper at coca cola during a busy time for them transportation is a lot more fun when you're out doing deliveries
currently doing this job for a year before my masters degree to pay for it, 90% of people at where I work are severely depressed. This job can earn you good money very quickly but can take your soul if you stay too long.
@EE 98 You'll be expected to hit a certain target per day, as long as you hit that and turn up on time you'll be kept on. Though keep in mind the targets are hard to hit. Have a target amount of money you want to save in mind and live cheaply until you get that, it will keep you focussed on days you want to quit the job. Good luck brother.
Man I do this for a smaller ice cream company and we don't get paid shit ($10/hr to start, with vets not even getting to $18), and our work environment is insanely unsafe. Our racking is broken, frost everywhere (some places the roof leaks so we get ice mountains). I broke my ankle last summer because the throttle on a jack stuck AND it had no brakes engage when the handles lifted so boom there went my ankle between it and a high lift at full speed. Only reason I work there is because it's the best summer job I can find while in college.

Tom CFC Well the best thing is dress in layers because if you work hard enough you might find you get hot and you definitely don't wanna sweat in a freezer environment. If your hands get cold what I did was purchase a smaller pair of gloves to go under my big ones. Other than that it just depends on the nature of your work whether you will get really cold or not.

Tom CFC Yeah I wore a hat like the guy in the video but if it's really cold you may want a hooded sweatshirt you can add to keep your neck warm. We didn't have headsets like they do so it wasn't difficult to put a hoodie on and take it off really quickly. Anyways best of luck it isn't all that bad once you're accustomed to it! That is as long as your work environment is safe anyways lol

The riders at my job all have chewed up wheels that are heard across the freezer, and we read our orders from paper, turning pages in bulky ass gloves. Wild. Btw Any glove recommendations? I drive a reach in a freezer thats neg 20 so I extreme durability isnt a big factor. Im rocking the green rag wool thinsulate refridiwear gloves ATM. They hold up fine but arent quite warm enough
