I thought as long as it is posted as a regulatory check for drivers license they can ask for ID same for safety checks they can stop you as long as the stop is brief. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Yes, he could do, but the damages are likely to be minimal. He was probably "detained" (my words) for 15 minutes max.
Any damages sustained by the OP would be judged _minimal_ by the court. At best, he would receive low 10s of thousands in compensation, worst case scenario is that the court finds it a reasonable detainment, meaning he loses 10s of thousands.

The risk would be if the judge saw it a real threat or a cop “doing their job” to get the requested info. They would play it off like he would never actually do it so it’s okay for the threat.
Remember, cops can lie to you about anything (but don't try lying to them!).

Citizens have to have committed a crime in order for those officers to ask for the driver license.
In other words since he wasn't speeding, wasn't swerving, wasn't crossing traffic lanes, wasn't making illegal turns etc..the police aren't able to ask you for driver license

@@metaldreams3595 Yes, you are correct, they DO have to be committing a crime, (or very suspect activity) for an officer to ask for an ID. Officers can’t just go up to somebody on the street and ask for ID.
But, EVERY STATE in the US has laws REQUIRING ALL DRIVERS to have ON THEIR PERSON, when driving, A VALID DRIVERS’ LICENSE when an officer asks. No exceptions.

In my state, they made it a law that you can't be stopped for "avoiding" a checkpoint.
