‘She Sells Sanctuary’ was the first song I ever heard from The Cult and it was an instant hit with me. Years later, when I was a singer in a Rock band, it became one of our favorite covers!
7th album Beyond Good and Evil is a masterpiece. Listened to it years after release and was blown away. Was always Love, Electric, Sonic Temple fan, but was shocked to hear BGE was as good if not better than those albums.
the band got a whopping million dollar advance for that album, but it seemed like Ian just gave up mid tour and had enough of doing the touring thing at the time.
I saw The Cult when they toured in support of that album, and they put on a great show. Monster Magnet, Stabbing Westward, and Bird were the opening acts.
She Sells Sanctuary came out around the time my brother got his drivers license, and we could finally go places without having to listen to my father's music (Bing Crosby, etc). So the first time we were driving around and listened to it, it felt like freedom. The entirety of Love was like this cool middle-ground between rock and alternative, both of which had their different appeals to me. I liked Electric and Sonic Temple, but I found they weren't albums I could play frequently because they felt too repetitive to me. I always felt that sort of repetition worked better on Love when they had the more psychedelic sound. By the time Ceremony came out, I was more firmly on the side of alternative, and the Cult were more firmly on the side of rock.
They came to Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1992 and had to pay the tkt to my cousin, so I would not go alone. Electrifying and mesmerizing performance. It's been 40 years and still got the "Love" vinyl
Great vid thanks for that, some excellent clips and quotes included. I was a huge fan of The Cult in my teens, saw them (here in the UK) many times in the 80s.
Big fan of the stuff they did from Love to Sonic Temple. I personally think the move towards more of a hard rock sound was a welcome one, as they still did it in their own unique way.
The Love album to me was one of those 'perfect' albums; an album you can play front-to-back in it's entirety with every song a banger! Easily in my top 5 favorite albums of all time. Thanks for sharing the story!
Ians voice on the love album was so unique in that time period, it was strong powerful but he wasnt doing any of the typical rock or metal vibrato type things. It was clear power. The rest of the British bands at that time could not compare vocally to his (within the alternative new wave scene) That song got me into doing music full time down the road as a profession ;)
Have really dug 'The Cult' from their beginnings onwards.... Also luv'd the Doors, and there are many parallels between the two musically. Both iconic songwriters/performers that altered, changed and captured a select listening group of people. After seeing them in the 80's and all the way till nowadays, amazed, they still evolve, and create their own atmosphere. There are sooooo many bands that have created the soundtrack to my life, and I'm beyond happy that 'The Cult' is part of that soundtrack. I even won bmx freestyle competitions and vert sk8brdng comps whilst rollin' to them, particularly 'Wildflower' and many others.... Always has a place in the heart and soul, along with other musicians from rock, punk, r n b and so much more... Up there with one of the most influential & greatest bands in my personal lifetime.

I was the only one in school that knew who The cult actually was... They weren't too big in South Africa but to me they were the better than GnR... I had to import all the albums because they weren't available here...
I don't remember it angering fans generally. If anything angered or alienated a lot of early fans, it was the shift to a more traditional hard rock sound with 'Love Removal Machine'.
I remember fire woman being seriously overplayed on my hometown radio station and I got burned out and never gave them a chance. Years later, I started checking out the rest of their catalog and now I realize just how great their music truly is. I almost missed out! Truly one of the top bands of the 80s and early 90s. Their other songs didnt get NEARLY enough exposure on mainstream radio back then.
I always thought The Cult were interesting with Ian having a wild vibrato for a few years and Billy having those great riffs. I remember hearing She Sells Sanctuary on the radio in Canada and I loved the song, altho I never bought the Love album, or Electric. I did get to talk to Bill and Ian on Rockline in 1987 while my voice hadn't changed yet and I asked about writing on the road. Ian had mentioned a song called Soldier Blue, or something and I have no idea if it ever came out anywhere. Anyway, great video.
Electric was awesome. A friend of mine gave me a copied cassette when it came out. It wasn't at all the type of stuff I was listening to at the time. Mostly Rush ,but I played it constantly. Winter 87/88.
Probably seen the Cult 6 times over the last 30 years - Always a great show and a tight band - luckily i've always got the see them in small venues - Mostly House of Blues
When they came out w a total ACDC format that killed them dead. Why they did this w such an original sound before that is a life mystery to me always. ?
I know. They were like Love and Rockets on steroids before the Rick Rubin produced Electric album. The Manor Sessions album that they shelved should have been the LP released. Not that AC/DC schlock.
Rain is in my top 5 for sure! When Wildflower came out, I went apes**t. Wil Hearted Son, Sweet Soul Sister, and Fire Woman are the rest of my favorites by them, in no particular order. That said, they have so many more songs I love! Been a fan since my mid teens when Love came out.
A friend i grew up with, loved early Cult music. When they released 'Love Removal,' he was offended. Listen to this, when did the Cult become Rock band. 😅
grew up in the 80s with a friend who constantly played the Cult on his car tape deck. Weven saw them open up for Metallica. Great band. Never saw them as punk... goth, I guess.
He moved to Hamilton not Toronto. Six Nations experience would never happened if he grew up in Toronto. Was a result of being bullied in Hamilton not Toronto. If you think that doesn't matter you don't have a clue about how terrible Hamilton is. Growing up in Hamilton made Ian who he is as an adult and The Cult.
I like She Sells Sanctuary and Fire Woman, but honestly, pretty much every Cult song can be interchangeable. They all have the same sound, the same tone, and the same bpm.
He fronted the Doors in Doors of the 21st Century with Kreiger and Ray google it - Only guy who could pull that off and Oliver Stone wanted him to play Jim in the Doors movie but Ian refused because the script didn't agree with in how Jim was portrayed in the Film
I saw them open for Metallica in 1989 in Philly, I had heard a few of their songs before that show but that was about it. I remember (at least the people immediately around me at the show) everyone thought they put on a good show. So I went and picked up some of their music and they vanished off radar.
This is the thing about music snobs Punk most of all. I'm sure many of these people listen to other things besides Punk, but they can't admit it in front of their friends who are all differently the same. I listen to punk and old hymns, dark ambient, hair metal, Jazz, and so much more. If you want to be different because you are, then you'll never fit in completely everywhere but you will have a far more interesting life. This isn't just 46 year old me ranting, I figured this out when I was 13 or 14.
I love watching your videos, but I have ADHD. As soon as you start talking about The Cult, I paused the video, went to Spotify, and started listening to The Cult songs I haven't heard in years. Sorry!
Naturally, Ian never deserved that punch in the face, but I distinctly remember a lot of Cult fans dropping them when Electric came out. Electric wasn't a complete 180° from their previous work, but it did stand apart from it. The band was just evolving, some people for whatever reason don't like that.
Love the cult, but I seen em last year, and Ian did not give a shit about singing any of their older songs. The show was good. But also a bit of a let down.
One of the first concerts I ever went to was Metallicas Justice for All tour in 1988 (or 89?).. The Cult was unfortunate band to open for them. The Metallica crowd did not treat them well.

Hey how old are you? I'm English but lived in jozie between 70 and 94 now back in England. Also what city?
@PatchouliPenny I'm 50 born in Jhb moved to Cape Town very young...
The Cult are amazing.🤘
Dreamtime is my favorite Cult album!
They are a great band seen them several times,
I don't remember it angering fans generally.
Where I live I only hear sanctuary unless I listen to satellite radio then I’ll hear more of their 80s era songs
Soldier Blue came out on Sonic Temple. Good song.
@ oh, okay.
I heard it on the local radio station. I recorded part of it. Like a year before it was released!
Now I Get It! The Cult were a punk new wave band dressed up as psychedelic ! At the time in 86 I was too young to understand
14:02 since you mentioned the streets of brixton, how about doing The Clash, 'The Guns Of Brixton' being one of my favorites of theirs
👏
I was not ready to hear my home six nations being mentioned
yeah Ian really bonded with those native american kids in the 70's in Canada and it went on to really influence his career.
Electric is in my top 20 best of All time for sure. 🤘🤘
@@michaelmalone7231 So right! Although ACDC doin a cover of Sanctuary would be cool to hear. I think it totally works. lol
Phoenix and Sanctuary are 2 of my favorites.
I LOVE THE CULT IAN ASTBURY SUCH A ONE OF A KIND BEAUTIFUL VOICE, SO MANY GREAT SONGS, LOVE AND ELECTRIC BEST ALBUMS
Rick Rubin proves his golden touch with Electric. Dude could not miss in that era.
My favorite song by the cult is rain i first heard it on gta 5 im a big gamer and video games also help me expand my taste in music
One of my favourite songs by them
@@derekwilhelm1555 rain is an amazing tune also, great choice
A friend i grew up with, loved early Cult music. When they released 'Love Removal,' he was offended. Listen to this, when did the Cult become Rock band. 😅
"Love" was one of the first albums I've owned where every song was as good as the next.
I saw the Cult open for, I think Metallica at the Saddledome, Calgary, 90/91 I’m sure.
SWEET SOUL SISTER!!!!
Thank you! ✌🏼😊
You're welcome!
@ 👍🏻😊
grew up in the 80s with a friend who constantly played the Cult on his car tape deck. Weven saw them open up for Metallica. Great band. Never saw them as punk... goth, I guess.
$61 million for a photograph. I'll never get over that. Shame.
Yeah it’s insane
Great video, thanks for sharing!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
I said Ontario. I just used stock footage of Toronto since there was none of Hamilton
truth be told
I like She Sells Sanctuary and Fire Woman, but honestly, pretty much every Cult song can be interchangeable. They all have the same sound, the same tone, and the same bpm.
Great video.
thanks
The Cult turned into a commercial version of The Misfits/Danzig.
You didn’t like their stuff after “Love?”
@ yeh but listen to Misfits & Danzig & you cant ignore that it really seems like Rick Rubin just made The cult cutesy version of them .
Billy is one of my guitar heroes. The Cult is such a fantastic band!
I remember when they first came out. I desperately wanted to like them, but there was something about them that felt off, and I never rated them.
❤ the sound engineering work on the ❤ album, reminds of said work on Bryan Ferry's "Bete Noire" album....
He’s got that skull and crossbones hat like Jim Morrison wore during his arrest in Miami.
He fronted the Doors in Doors of the 21st Century with Kreiger and Ray google it - Only guy who could pull that off and Oliver Stone wanted him to play Jim in the Doors movie but Ian refused because the script didn't agree with in how Jim was portrayed in the Film
My younger brother had this tape in high school 😊
Funny coincidence, I own the album at 3:47 that's not by The Cult. It's... yeah... something.
I saw them open for Metallica in 1989 in Philly, I had heard a few of their songs before that show but that was about it. I remember (at least the people immediately around me at the show) everyone thought they put on a good show. So I went and picked up some of their music and they vanished off radar.
there was a great story about Metallica pranking them on tour with fish. I did a video about it here. th-cam.com/video/lAQvi5pKbTw/w-d-xo.html
Loved the first two albums back in the day, preferred the first one
As you’re doing the cult, why not do an episode on Fields of the Nephilim.
So many good songs from The Cult
This is the thing about music snobs Punk most of all. I'm sure many of these people listen to other things besides Punk, but they can't admit it in front of their friends who are all differently the same. I listen to punk and old hymns, dark ambient, hair metal, Jazz, and so much more. If you want to be different because you are, then you'll never fit in completely everywhere but you will have a far more interesting life. This isn't just 46 year old me ranting, I figured this out when I was 13 or 14.
The Cult.... Rulzzzzz!!
I love watching your videos, but I have ADHD. As soon as you start talking about The Cult, I paused the video, went to Spotify, and started listening to The Cult songs I haven't heard in years. Sorry!
I have ADD as well, and when he ....oh look, a bunny
@@RickinMaryland no worries they are a great band
Fantastic
One of my Fav's.
The Cult👊🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Great band
2:30 Notice the similarities in ian and youngbluds looks anyone?.
Looks like Ian if Ian was a lame TikTok guy😂
