Even a brand new one has problems! i purchased a brand spanking new Sprinter and with 100 miles on it the engine went into limp mode. Grrrrrrrrr. Down for 2-weeks. My opinion, take your $70K for a new van and throw what ever your thinking into the AMBO! My 2-cents.
Honestly.. your van is fine. The stuff that is breaking is because those back-country roads. It's hard on everything. You've put a ton of work into your van. New suspension, motor... idk man. I'd run that setup but be weary when ur doing back-country. Take it slow. It sucks but if you take it slow you'd probably have better luck :) - All the best on your trip chrome. Happy to see you and cruzy doing your thing again!
minor flex plate repair solved. engine..new. transmission new, brakes new, extra fuel tank check. new tires check, new exhaust check, new suspension check. minor body work...planned. bottom line..new van rebuild. lots of life still in your home
I bought a 4 year old Ford Transit 250 Medium roof. Brand new build, it had 67k miles on it for 40k. No problems at all!! It’s a 2016. I can stand up in it. The ceiling height is 5’8” in the center. Love, love, love it!! Lots of nice used ones. I got a pre-sale inspection done at the Ford Dealership before I bought it. Highly recommend.
The oversized tires and the increased drive line angle from the lift kit both probably contributed to the flywheel failure, not to mention it was only rated for a 4.6.
To be honest, I think the extra weight your van carries (water, batteries, etc) over long distances and rough terrain might cause accelerated transmission wear, especially if hard acceleration is applied. At least you know in future what to expect. It’s better a flywheel fail rather than a torque converter. Safe travels, Chrome, I love your channel.
No don't throw it out man. When you install the beefed up flexplate, go ahead and replace the rear-end as well, complete new drive train plus your build...all new van man
Let’s get that Ambo built over the winter👌 Let’s get Chrome off his knees and standing straight. I got a feeling that new stuff won’t last, the way you drive in the outback. 🤣🤣👍✌️✌️And let us not forget new stuff breaks too, and the dealer will be saying ‘we’ll see ya in November’ 😝
Chrome im a mechanic stay away from them vans if you don't want a headache the ford and dodge both have alot of engine and transmission problems. Honestly your better off staying with the van you have.
No, No ,No! Your Van/home isn't garbage! You just need to treat it a little better! Cool it on the off road travels. In my opinion, that's to much for your Van to handle!❤
Im just going to say it. Seems to me that the "bigger rims and tires"(You mentioned getting them on the new van), are the problem. Those big wheels put extra stress on the transmission and drive train. Its most likely why that part failed. It wasn't designed for the big wheels. Mabe downsize to reasonable sized tires. I have a transit 2021, 250. I like it. Its not perfect, But I do like it.
Hi Chrome, you could buy a Ford Transist van with high roof 2022 model under $40,000 and about 50,000 kms! on the meter! it would be more confortable for you also it's safer for your back!
Hi Chrome, not sure if you've mentioned this or not but I've sometimes wondered about the wear and tear on your knees. They're not designed to take the amount of use you've subjected them to over the years and knee replacements are very often extremely painful to recover from and they don't always work. Please be kind to them and love them enough to get a high top next time. Glad to see you back on the road again, hope you really enjoy your trip back to the island and stay breakdown free!!! Cheers.👍🙂
Aaah you won’t get rid of your home! Keep it going at least until you can get the Ambo up ,that build will be epic, slow and steady, while van toys continues to grow! Peace out bro you got a handle on this!
Chrome you have brand new engine and restored transmission, you have invested tons of time and love in your van, you have it just as you like it. I believe upgrading your van for a brand new is not necessary, at least not for now. Also your van issues are very interesting!!! Gives more content to your channel 👍🏼👍🏼😁
@hotwheels8092 you have an updated van, set up for you. Just remember to replace the broken parts with high quality replacements...OEM is a better choice, rather than cheap aftermarket. Be safe.
Dude, Your van is great, New Engine, New Transmission, New Suspension, the flexplate broke because it was crap and could not handle your new engine. If you want a new van, do the Ambo....
New doesn't necessarily mean better. It's just different. Your setup is pretty cool. You have it set up the way you want it. I wouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater because it decided to bubble in the water.
The heart of a van is the power train. Chrome, you have a new heart in your van now, so, it’s new. Go for the sunset in your van you have now, it deserves it.
Bought a used 130” transit with a Quigley conversion. Actual 4x4. I love it. Sitting beside a lake in Michigan’s UP as I type this. It’s a shorty mid height. Full build out came in at 7200 lbs.
What a beautiful serene place to wake up. I try not to make rash decisions when I'm stressed or depressed. I go camping deep in the woods and rejuvenate , reflect and refresh my mind body and soul. You are already there so take a few days to yourself and things will look allot brighter with a clear head. 😎✌️✌️ Extra smooches for sleepy head Cruzie 😴 💋💋🐾🐾
You van is fine, a new van breaks down also expecially if its in the dirt! Work on the ambo over the next few years and move into it. Great video, keep em coming.
Every vehicle has weak points but it's no reason to get rid of the whole vehicle. You replace the part and move on. At a certain age things will all need replacing. They are under constant pressure, constant use, more than the average vehicle..... Because you're on the road all the time then yes it will be more frequent. Houses have plumbing and electrical issues, leaks etc.... Whatever you live in needs maintenance, throw in the fact that it's a vehicle.... It's the stress and inconvenience, the uncertainty that is so exhausting. I love that saying "Take a day" that resonated with me so much. Thanks for keeping it real Chrome!!
🦉 It’s not just you bro as I seem to recall reading one’s body chemistry changes like every 5 to 7 years. It’s merely a conscious reckoning of such in all our lives whereas change is inevitable. One feels the tug, the restlessness of moving onward. Some may stagnant while others march forward with glee and anticipation. I’ve been one willing to step out, accept the risk, learn from the experience. Now at 72 yrs with unexpected health challenges I’ve somewhat settled in but my mind reflects back trying to jumpstart this gal toward a new adventure.
Bro. Spend the winter doing the the ambo. Do it right from top to bottom and start your new journey. Your van now has done so much. Time to give her a rest.
I follow a gal here in the US, Nikki Delvaenthal, she lived in a Prius for over 4yrs, tried out a bunch of different vehicles, then bought a brand new Mercedes van and had it custom converted to the camper van she wanted. She's been on the road with it for maybe 6 months, and she's had at least 3 breakdowns, and right now she's in a truck that was loaned to her that they made into a camper of sorts, because she had to tow her van to Tahoe for a repair that's going to take a long time. So new, doesn't mean better. I kinda agree with the idea of the quad for you. Get your serious off roading done outside of your home.
Bought used van. Added build included bed and kitchen.. Added bed liner on outside panels. You boosted suspension with more leaf. Replaced engine with bigger engine. First OLD drive train component? Flywheel, boke because of excessive strain. Get a stronger flywheel? Transmission going to fail. Stronger tranny? Drive shaft, differential, rear axle can fail. You've got the shop van and the ambulance. Swap build into shop van, then build ambulance.
Breaking down in an unfamiliar city within a mile of a dozen of repair shops is stressful enough. But breaking down in the middle of nowhere during a popular season for the locals to not be available must be stressful times 100!!! Glad you and Cruzie are safely back on the road!!!
i don’t feel like the van is unreliable… i feel like all the after market stuff is putting all kinds of stress on the system. you’ll eventually upgrade all the weak links, but until then…
You have a new engine, tranny, fuel tanks, wheels and tires, bumpers and body panels, you have an almost new van now, probably better than new. The newer you go the worse they get . Repairs now are cheaper than monthly payments plus all the interest. Just my opinion for whatever it is worth. :)
A new van doesn’t mean no more breakdowns. You have a new engine and transmission. You went through this when the transmission and engine blew. Just keep maintaining the van you love and enjoy.
As we age some of our weak points are our knees and hips. You deserve a van where you can stand up. Go marry the beautiful jewel you found. It’s fun to live fast and reckless. But our bodies slow down. 💕
They provided the plans in a format that chrome cant yet open. Said he will look at them/deal with that when he gets to working on the interior of the beast.
Hey Chrome. I am a big and lii ok mf time fan of yours but please consider getting TheBeast going. That Amboe is awesome and would be so cool to hit the back roads with. Thanks for all the great content you post.
Lol, I’ve been full-time time just over a month. In that month, my spine fractured in two places by lifting water and I need surgery, my kid is embarrassed that I’m homeless, and my van has to go in on Saturday for repair. But, thanks to watching you and planning for this new stage of life, I haven’t been this happy in 10 years.
Crazy talk! U spent blood sweet and tears fixing it! New motor , Trans, Rear end. Fix the shell and roll that van big daddy. Keep your paper and spend it on repairs is better then a payment and still paying for repairs!
Chrome, your van is free and clear, keep it until it can't go anymore, or the rust gets you. You can get a flex plate what drag racer use (Heavy Duty). Hell one race put more stress on that part than you can in a year or more.
You’ve got an ambo that’s paid for, just think how long it would take you to build it at 1 thousand a month for a budget! You could end up with an awesome new home that runs on diesel and no matter how old of vehicle it is they all break down sooner or later ,besides having a great diesel mechanic friend who knows how to fix it!
Diesel repairs usually start at $3000 and WAY up. Imagine trying to work on one stuffed in a van. One bad dose of fuel can cost $20,000+ to repair.,,,no one warranties that.
An older body man and mechanic told me years ago vehicles don't wear out ,we get tired of working on the same vehicle over and over again ,it doesn't matter what you have if you use it your going to have to work on it , willy
Glad to see you back on the road. Im having so much fun traveling with you. Even when you are having issues. You are lucky to have so many people willing to help you out. Looking forward to more adventures. Be safe. 🚐💜
Considering the age and wear and tear in your van, you're blessed! Seriously, Chrome. you're home is awesome. All kinds of things happen to ALL kinds of homes! Enjoy what ya got my friend. At least you know what's in your van. I dunno. me thinks you're probably just in a slump because of all you've been through. Hang in there, oh, and your right, even our bodies go through chemical changes every seven years! Just time to relax and rejuvenate!
Ambulance is your future home in 3 or 5 years it has a new diesel and a blank slate//// the last time I replaced a broken flecks plate it was a problem with tork converter not fitting in crank shaft pilot hole ask Loren to check ❤❤😊
Chrome you answered your question, yes even new vans break down, and yours has new motor, tranny, and everything,so you got a defective flywheel,it s only a part, and because we live in a Great Country,if ever we are stuck there is always a way out ,and by the way I m pretty sure you don t have payments on your home !!!!!
I still think the 2 van option is better. One for pavement/home, the other for offroad etc. Or even, a new van with high top and extended for new home and then a tiny trailer in tow with one of those 4 wheel atv's and then you can park by the water and then drive the atv around and have some fun. Just don't hurt yourself bro.
two van setup will really restrict him on just far he can go. the whole reason why he did the two fuel tank system was so he can venture out further and stay out longer.
Keep your van. It's cheaper to fix when it breaks down then it is to buy something else. Just stop going on rough roads. No more of that. Be gentle with your van and she should be ok
No man come one this been years with the same van its time for a change whe all hope he would build the ambulance in something epic as a house but he didnt so why keep the old one maybe some one else needs it more and he can sell it off for a decent price and buy a new or used one with more stand space so hes back also stays okay He said himself they make lift kits for that van so it would be awesome something new to call home and make the most epic one ever 🎉
I can relate. However, sometimes you just gotta slow down and not race to the next thing because it aint working. How about meditation to help clear your thoughts and just give yourself a moment. I think it could help.❤
Get the bugs worked out of your van you have now!! like another comment said, Get working on that Ambo!! it has a rebuilt engine already. Breakdowns will happen!! You just have to deal with them as they come!! Stay safe and enjoy the rest of the summer travels!! (Oh get a heavy duty Flex plate!! with the new engine (bigger) has more torque and horsepower than the old engine!! Hence tearing out the center of the standard flex plate!!) Oh one more thing, I like how you have got this van built!!
Even a brand new one has problems! i purchased a brand spanking new Sprinter and with 100 miles on it the engine went into limp mode. Grrrrrrrrr. Down for 2-weeks. My opinion, take your $70K for a new van and throw what ever your thinking into the AMBO! My 2-cents.
Stick with the tried and true used technology 👍
Atlin is a beautiful spot!
Stop don't do it! Steer the course!
German vehicle in a domestic setting.
@@rv2travel or maybe get something that’s maybe, I don’t know, three years old, maybe able to get it a little cheaper

It's not going down backroads that is hurting the van. It might be driving down the backroads like a bat out hell.
Cruzie - king of the side eye. 😄 His morning face is a whole vibe. And a perfect depiction of me in the mornings. I am NOT a morning person.
Maybe start fixing up the ambulance, get her up and running as a backup and slowly retire your rig
The oversized tires and the increased drive line angle from the lift kit both probably contributed to the flywheel failure, not to mention it was only rated for a 4.6.
That shot of Cruz in the "morning look" needs to be on a Monday morning coffee mug. "Another Monday morning.... please help me Cruz through the day"
To be honest, I think the extra weight your van carries (water, batteries, etc) over long distances and rough terrain might cause accelerated transmission wear, especially if hard acceleration is applied. 70k for new cargo van plus 50k to put in an interior? You could buy a house! New vehicles suck these days. Time to get the ambo road ready!
he doesn't need a new new van, just new to him van.

Do the AMBULANCE WORK,! Get it done and reliable for yourself and Cruze. C'mon Bro! 🤜🤛.
Set it up for "VAN TOYS!".
Aaah you won’t get rid of your home! Keep it going at least until you can get the Ambo up ,that build will be epic, slow and steady, while van toys continues to grow! Peace out bro you got a handle on this!
If you can comfortably afford it why not
To me, your breakdown is content. Also, you're teaching people how to handle their breakdowns. Keep the van. You and Cruz rock!

Don’t you have like 3 vans? The Ambo, other Ambo, and Shop Van? I’ve been patiently waiting to see The Beast Ambo hit the road and built out.
I do want see the ambulance up n running soon

Bro build the ambulance beast. The price and payment of a transit is basically going back to paying rent.
Bro. Spend the winter doing the the ambo. Do it right from top to bottom and start your new journey. Your van now has done so much. Time to give her a rest.

High top. You’re not often needing the low roof I been seeing. And your back and knees will thank you
Bought used van. Added build included bed and kitchen.. Added bed liner on outside panels. You boosted suspension with more leaf. Replaced engine with bigger engine. First OLD drive train component? You've got the shop van and the ambulance. Swap build into shop van, then build ambulance.
I celebrated my eighth vanniversary yesterday, in Matilda Two, parked at a rest stop on Highway 24 near Bridge Lake. This is the life.
Every time you fix something in a Stix and bricks, something else needs attention. Same, same. Keep your home.

agreed, the Van is heavy
@@lostman65 totally agree, the more a vehicle is modified with things it was not intended for, the more things will break.

Chrome I think you could answer your own question maybe.....Vantoys needs to start building vans from basic to fulldressed😉😆😘🤔
what happened to the ambo high school student projects??
did that fizzle or did I miss something?
They provided the plans in a format that chrome cant yet open. Said he will look at them/deal with that when he gets to working on the interior of the beast.
Hey Chrome. I am a big and lii ok mf time fan of yours but please consider getting TheBeast going. That Amboe is awesome and would be so cool to hit the back roads with. Thanks for all the great content you post.
Hey Chrome don't let anyone push you to do anything you don't want to do or isn't ready to do. I'm behind whatever you choose to do.
Instead of looking for another van, get your ambulance built out. Time to getter done.👍
Chrome, you are going to drive that van until the wheels fall off. Then you will put the wheels back on and keep driving it!
Look for a stronger flex plate and install it , and delete the rear end lock up. You don’t need to be going into those rough spots
Will never understand how on earth they can charge $60,000 for a VAN..with nothing in it.
Might as well, just hold onto it, bro. It’ll all work out.
This is a really beautiful place Chrome. So glad I took us here! 😃
A VAN LIKE YOUR BEST MECHANIC HAS. TO STAND UP❤
Lol, I’ve been full-time time just over a month. In that month, my spine fractured in two places by lifting water and I need surgery, my kid is embarrassed that I’m homeless, and my van has to go in on Saturday for repair. Off Roading will always break a van new or old!
Crazy talk! U spent blood sweet and tears fixing it! New motor , Trans, Rear end. Fix the shell and roll that van big daddy. Keep your paper and spend it on repairs is better then a payment and still paying for repairs!
Chrome, Buddy your talking about $100,000 plus on a new project......finish the ambo first.......just my 2¢
Great that you’re back on the road. Consider making the complete drivetrain heavy duty. Also, heavy duty u-joints, etc…??
Never buy a new model of vehicle until they have been out for at least 5 years. It takes that time to get all the bugs out of the new design.
Yes!
And parts aren’t as plentiful until then, making costs higher.
Older vans are less complex and easier for mechanics to repair..
Chrome, your van is free and clear, keep it until it can't go anymore, or the rust gets you. You can get a flex plate what drag racer use (Heavy Duty). Hell one race put more stress on that part than you can in a year or more.
That's an airplane "weather vane"... love it!

Keep her, that’s what is part of you being relatable to those who live in an older vehicle. And, she’s giving you amazing content
An older body man and mechanic told me years ago vehicles don't wear out ,we get tired of working on the same vehicle over and over again ,it doesn't matter what you have if you use it your going to have to work on it , willy
I have a Transit 350HD high roof, built out myself and I love it. I tow a 2dr JEEP and still get 14mpg!
You have a 4x4 abundance with a rebuilt engine. Fix it up.
When will your ambulance be on the road? Alternate between the two.
Glad to see you back on the road. Im having so much fun traveling with you. Even when you are having issues. You are lucky to have so many people willing to help you out. Looking forward to more adventures. Be safe. 🚐💜
I hear ya about the breakdown stress. It’s brutal. I’m glad you took some rest time. Love ya Chrome❤👍🏻✌🏼✌🏼
I love your sign idea. I knew you would want something different. Great idea. And as always you have to do what is right for you.
I vote for a proper AMBO build... That thing will take you to better destinations and if done right, will last! AMBO! AMBO! AMBO!!!!!
It's important to vent the stress out! We're here for you, Chrome!
Cruzy looks like he has a hangover.
Love the big airplane weather vane.
Considering the age and wear and tear in your van, you're blessed! Seriously, Chrome. you're home is awesome. All kinds of things happen to ALL kinds of homes! Enjoy what ya got my friend. Maybe just too rough on the van sometimes. Its one thing going off roading, but quite another driving the van on roads that could shake a tank apart!
Don't even think about it you're not going to get rid of that van you just put too much into!
You don't need a new van, you practically have a new van. Small things. I'm so glad you didn't let this inconvenience ruin your trip.
Yeah, and what happens too when Ford says the warranty is void cuz you motified it. That would be my worry.
Keep your van. It's cheaper to fix when it breaks down then it is to buy something else. Just stop going on rough roads. No more of that. Be gentle with your van and she should be ok
No man come one this been years with the same van its time for a change whe all hope he would build the ambulance in something epic as a house but he didnt so why keep the old one maybe some one else needs it more and he can sell it off for a decent price and buy a new or used one with more stand space so hes back also stays okay
He said himself they make lift kits for that van so it would be awesome something new to call home and make the most epic one ever 🎉
Stop going on rough roads? You mean stop exploring the most exciting remote places? Might as well not do vanlife at all if thats the only option.
Build the ambo already.
I feel like telling Chrome to calm down with his van would about as effective as telling an angry woman to calm down 😂
@@GelliSolo I've been thinking this since last year. Was afraid to post it
I can relate. However, sometimes you just gotta slow down and not race to the next thing because it aint working. How about meditation to help clear your thoughts and just give yourself a moment. I think it could help.❤
Happy to see you use the stairs for Cruzy 👍.... with your tight muscles from anxiety, a prime time to re-injure back. 😟
