Was Barnabas the uncle of Mark or were they cousins?
Dear Elizabeth. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. In Colossians 4:10 the Greek word for “sister’s son” is “anepsios,” which can also mean “cousin” rather than “nephew”. Hippolytus from Rome, an early Christian writer, describes him as a cousin. However, we cannot know with absolute certainty, primarily because of the due to the ambiguity of the term "anepsios." Scholars are divided on the cousin theory versus the nephew theory. What is clear from the biblical text is that there was a close familial connection between Barnabas and Mark.
