My dad isn't a superstitious guy, but he swears that the stories about the priests walking the dead back to their hometown are true. The priests are also divided into ranks(?)- most of them are only capable of bringing 1-2 with them, but there are those who are capable of handling 6-7. Apparently, there were also special rest stops that would let the priests take a break at and they allowed the corpses to be stored there while the priest rested. Part 2, please :)
I wisely waited until the next morning to watch this. I saw it in my feed and I was like COOL!! But it was around 3 AM, an I thought...no wait, I still have to sleep today :'O But now I've seen it and it's quite interesting all these myths and folk stories :)
starwarsstudio100 Isn't Hsien-Ko a jingshi? She's a hopping one and even has that ward on her forehead. (Granted, she voluntarily turned herself into one to protect her mother's soul.)
I was eating a skull shaped candy during Halloween and my mother hit my back and made me vomit it out. She said the demon will possess my body if i eat the candy. Ew...
Annie Nguyen Your mom might be nuts. That's like saying if you eat a Santa chocolate, Kris Kringle or one of his elves will possess you. Is she involved in any radical churches or cults? I'm a pacifistic and moderate nondenominational Christian who sees a lot of crazy stuff going on in many of the Pentacostal and Baptist churches these days.
The fear you get from hearing jumping Jiangshi can turn into flying Jiangshi is the same fear you get when that cockroach you chase to a corner started to fly. Periodt.
My parents used to have the cutest little stuffed white Chinese vampire doll. It had little suction cups on its hands so we could put it on glass. Mom said we had to put it on the front door to ward off evil spirits, is this true? It could also be that mom liked the idea of a little vampire face peeking at visitors through the little window in our front door, but I can't be too sure... :)
This reminds me of my childhood. When I was a kid I used to be really scared of jiangshi, especially because at that time jiangshi movies were very popular for some reason, but there was one movie about a child jiangshi who befriended a boy. After watching that I made up an imaginary friend who was a jiangshi so I would stop being scared of them, because hey, I have a jiangshi friend!
JCarolR That move sounds really familiar! I think I watched it once too. It was a long time ago... I wonder what it was called. It was in Chinese and I can't remember. :(
Its so sad how underrated and under-appreciated the jiangshi are in western culture. The only nods to jiangshi I have seen in a while are the jiangshi nightclub easter eggs in sleeping dogs and a jaingshi hat for the soldier in team fortress 2 ( one of his main traits is rocket-jumping or essentially 'hopping' around, so one could see where the joke's inspiration was made) what we really need is a new jiang shi movie, that would be fun like Mr. Vampire and set in modern times.
This reminded me of an episode of the Jackie Chan Adventures when they were trapped in some place with a reanimated corpse that grew stronger the longer it was alive and turned Uncle into a vampire too. Anyone else remember that?
Awesome vids---I have been searching for some type of video to introduce to students about Chinese vampires for years (since I watched Mr Vampire 20 years ago!). Thanks so much AND PLEASE KEEP MAKING THESE VIDS ABOUT ASPECTS OF CHINESE and/ Asian CULTURE; it makes teaching so much more fun!
First knew of jiangshi from Darkstalkers cuz one of the characters, Hsien-Ko who is a jiangshi. I like vampires that don't sparkle tbh Honestly they're
Hahaha! So grateful for you guys! I had little hopping zombies in my classroom today when I was teaching them about Halloween in America. If I hadn't seen this a few months ago, I'd have wondered what was going on, instead I got attacked by some of the cutest jumping zombies ever.
But what happens if the incantation is taken off of the corpse? Does the Jiangshi continue to be animate, or does it return to it's lifeless corpse state?
Otaku Elainah I know it's been a a year you asked this, but I just saw the video. From all the jianshi movie I saw, incantations are served a way to tame them. Almost like a play/pause button. Jiangshi without incantation kills ppl. Incantation on their forehead will freeze them. Removing it would reanimate them.
In other Chinese legend, the top level of Jiangshi is 犼(Roar) or also called 蹬龍(meaning stepping on dragon). They kill dragons and eat DRAGON BRIAN (@_@)
This reminds me of Shaman King, where one of the characters Lee Bailong (Lee Xiaolong spoof lol) is a jiangshi. But I remember being scared of jiangshi from those Hong Kong movies from the 70's gah.. It still makes me shudder a bit....
This explains why the vampires fly and do not hop in the movie Vampire Hunters directed by Tsui Hark, they were Level 3. Case closed. I love this. I have been fascinated with Jiang Shi since playing Phantom Fighter for Nintendo as a kid, which was based off the movie Mr. Vampire. Thanks for the awesome and informative video. You are magnificent.
Did you guys know that there's a Chinese version of plant vs zombie? It's set in the Great Wall and the zombies are jiangshi. I found that so creative, you should check it out
Took me forever to realize the Heartless in Land of Dragons were Hopping Zombies... which is even more disturbing when you remember how some of those soldiers turned in to the Hopping Zombie Heartless... were they zombies in disguise or just unfortunate soldiers?
eternalypissed That episode was easily the creepiest and easily in my top 3 favorite episodes. I want a Jiang Shi. If I were a drug lord. I would keep a few in a mansion. Imagine how much more gruesome that shootout scene in Scarface would have been. As long as he had some sticky rice, he could have made a clear. getaway and let the undead finish them off. Then again, he was super high as well as pissed about his sister and best friend.
My parents never did any of that to me or my sisters and sometimes it makes me wonder if my family is the only Fuzhounese family that doesn't care if we have anything related to zombies, vampires, etc. Two years ago when I had a trip to Boston I'm my school, I bought a deck of tarot cards that's vampire themed and my parents didn't say anything about it (besides yelling at me for wasting the money of course).
I think I liked the little personal stories at the end just as much as the content about the Jiangshi. I have to admit the first time I ran into a film which included them I couldn't quite understand the reason for the fanged, hopping diplomat appearing to torment the living.
Jack from Last Kids on Earth: "AAAAAAAAAA!" Chines Zombie: hops Jack: "Oh wait. I forgot. I can control these things. Chinese Zombies: hops away Jack: "Oh no you don't."
I've seen these vampires a lot, of course in movies :p But I actually have never heard of the Ba and it was cool hearing it :) and I've experienced some moments when I'm just talking about ghosts or scary stuff my mom's always like "why are you even talking about this?" and I guess she feels the same way about spiritual stuff
Aww, I was hoping you guys would mention that in one of the phases of jiang shi, they are blind and can only be attracted to the breathing of a living creature. And if a jiang shi falls in one of the earlier phases, they can't get back up unless a black cat jumps over them.
just realized RAYDEN (RAIDEN) from Mortal Kombat looks like a Jiangshi, even though he's the "thunder God", also Christopher Lambert played Rayden in MK Movie haha
From what i understand, the lvl5 JiangShi, Ba, isn't the version that you have told, although these kind of urban legend doesn't have a "correct" story, but I hope you can get to the version that I have read, which is about the 4 most powerful JiangShi in the history. Looking forward to it... =D
wow, I'm surprised no one has made a game yet playing as a cowardly jiang shi, where you start leveling up by feeding on the blood of weaker animals, then humans, then soldiers then stronger mythical creatures until you become the undead demon king.
Part 2, please :)
oh those are def true
That's kind of really funny, they're like pokemon, they evolve over time ^_^"
Now I want to be a Jiangshi.
Gendo ruwo so u can become a jiangshi
Who watched this at night and got scared?
I'm a little creeped out by shape shifters.
zombies always grossed me out, and I never cared for vampires..... except for Underworld series..... that's ok, great video
Chuck Norris is a demon king right? he has limitless power....
I wisely waited until the next morning to watch this. I saw it in my feed and I was like COOL!! But it was around 3 AM, an I thought...no wait, I still have to sleep today :'O But now I've seen it and it's quite interesting all these myths and folk stories :)
mememme!!!!! I am totally okay with western vampire or zombie,,but the eastern ones,,,omg,,who can help me,it's 23:30 here!!!!!!!
My question is if the zombies eat and go to the bathroom, do they use a squatty potty?
of course, #squattypotty helps flow better :-)
Do you think the Jiangshi is underrated by today media?
starwarsstudio100 yes!
Off the Great Wall I totally agree with that.
Love them. The only mention of jiangshi in popular media was Darkstalkers. :)
astrangeone Why darkstalker?
starwarsstudio100
Isn't Hsien-Ko a jingshi? She's a hopping one and even has that ward on her forehead. (Granted, she voluntarily turned herself into one to protect her mother's soul.)
"Warm Bodies" they did romanticize zombies too :P
I was eating a skull shaped candy during Halloween and my mother hit my back and made me vomit it out. She said the demon will possess my body if i eat the candy. Ew...
yea you have to eat skull candy not in front of your mother
Annie Nguyen Your mom might be nuts. That's like saying if you eat a Santa chocolate, Kris Kringle or one of his elves will possess you. Is she involved in any radical churches or cults? I'm a pacifistic and moderate nondenominational Christian who sees a lot of crazy stuff going on in many of the Pentacostal and Baptist churches these days.
Does Yi even realize how beautiful she is? She is hotter than a hot pot.
She'll be tastier than Hot pot
Hon Chan ok.......
The fear you get from hearing jumping Jiangshi can turn into flying Jiangshi is the same fear you get when that cockroach you chase to a corner started to fly. Periodt.
This would make a great comic book franchise
ikr :D
If zombies are looking for human brains for food I think I am very very safe.
so u have no brain?
My parents used to have the cutest little stuffed white Chinese vampire doll. It had little suction cups on its hands so we could put it on glass. Call 911 NOW !
Oh my gosh , it's like 12 am and I'm a bit paranoid now ....
I want to see a Chinese parody of Twilight...
someday
there is, movies or drama "我和殭屍有個約會/我和僵尸有个约会(woh huh jiahng sh you guh yuehoey)lit. I have a date with Jiangshi
"Yeah! This is why I like cats! Because they hiss at Jiangshu!" hahaah XD That just made me laugh out
Jiangshi! Heard of them when I was younger, how'd I know just by watching the Chinese horror Mr. Vampire! It's a good and funny Movie btw.
me 2 :D
kh wong
the movie is classic jiang shi movie
I swear the great classic was terrific and somewhat terrifying at the same time. Awesome that you seen it too! XD
:)
This reminded me of an episode of the Jackie Chan Adventures when they were trapped in some place with a reanimated corpse that grew stronger the longer it was alive and turned Uncle into a vampire too. Anyone else remember that?

Make part 2
mikeys just the best. literally subscribed to all of the channels where he is active :) just such a down to earth, positive and intelligent guy!
But what happens if the incantation is taken off of the corpse? Does the Jiangshi continue to be animate, or does it return to it's lifeless corpse state?
+Otaku Elaine I remember in the movie i watched way back then, the jiangshi will stop moving
Otaku Elainah I know it's been a a year you asked this, but I just saw the video. From all the jianshi movie I saw, incantations are served a way to tame them. Almost like a play/pause button. Looking forward to part 2! Yi's cat rawr @ 7:06 :).

Did you guys know that there's a Chinese version of plant vs zombie? It's set in the Great Wall and the zombies are jiangshi. I found that so creative, you should check it out

I love this!! Please make more!!
NO! we want u all to run into a jiangshi and don't know what to do
Off the Great Wall just asking, do lightbulbs count as fire because i know that jiang shi are afraid of light
how did you get lightbulb = fire lol. At best it can be = sunlight
I remember watching a chinese film of them when i was little and having a nightmare every single day for whole week!! Scariest childhood memory ever!!
Instead of saying 'Jumping Jehosophat!', you can now say 'Jumping Jiangshi!'
3:29 I SEE DA BOOTY
They don't afraid of Chicken Stock but Chicken Blood.
Love all Mr Vampire movies, especially the first one :o)
Yi's beauty shielded me from fear, But very interesting, especially the hopping corpses,.
Reminds me of all the "Vampire Expert" drama I used to watch when I was little XD along with the "Yi Mei Dao Zhang"
Love the "Mr Vampire" movie pics my fave movie!
Legendary channel.
Took me forever to realize the Heartless in Land of Dragons were Hopping Zombies... which is even more disturbing when you remember how some of those soldiers turned in to the Hopping Zombie Heartless... were they zombies in disguise or just unfortunate soldiers?
Having dead bodies transport themselves for burials is such a useful idea!
i remember an episode of "Jackie Chan Adventures" that had a Chinese vampire in it. i didn't watch that episode because i got scared LOL XD
eternalypissed That episode was easily the creepiest and easily in my top 3 favorite episodes. I want a Jiang Shi. If I were a drug lord. I would keep a few in a mansion. The jumping ones are hilarious.
they look funny but will deal some serious damage
My parents never did any of that to me or my sisters and sometimes it makes me wonder if my family is the only Fuzhounese family that doesn't care if we have anything related to zombies, vampires, etc. Two years ago when I had a trip to Boston I'm my school, I bought a deck of tarot cards that's vampire themed and my parents didn't say anything about it (besides yelling at me for wasting the money of course).
I love the Jiang Shi myth.
Would Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat count by the definitions of the above?

Always thought they were the creepiest things ever! Hated the jumping ones when I was younger
flying ones are worse
I think I liked the little personal stories at the end just as much as the content about the Jiangshi. I have to admit the first time I ran into a film which included them I couldn't quite understand the reason for the fanged, hopping diplomat appearing to torment the living.

Chinese Zombies: hops away
Jack: "Oh no you don't."

Zombie -> Ghoul -> Vampire -> Soul-eater -> Demon. More or less like this in the "non-oficial" undead category.
Zombies _are_ romanticized! "Warm Bodies"?
Off topic, but Yi looks really pretty in this vid (:
When my grandfather was, young, he'd witnessed the Chinese zombie priest escorting the zombies "home". O.o
just realized RAYDEN (RAIDEN) from Mortal Kombat looks like a Jiangshi, even though he's the "thunder God", also Christopher Lambert played Rayden in MK Movie haha

From what i understand, the lvl5 JiangShi, Ba, isn't the version that you have told, although these kind of urban legend doesn't have a "correct" story, but I hope you can get to the version that I have read, which is about the 4 most powerful JiangShi in the history. Looking forward to it... =D
The Provence that he's talkin about that did the zombie transport sing isn't that the same Provence that the coronavirus started what the hell LOL
What about a jiangshi spirit?
wow, I'm surprised no one has made a game yet playing as a cowardly jiang shi, where you start leveling up by feeding on the blood of weaker animals, then humans, then soldiers then stronger mythical creatures until you become the undead demon king.
