Dinner with Bambi and the herd (day 119 part 1)

  • Back in July, Bambi followed us home from an evening walk. The previous evening, we saw a nursing doe that had been hit and killed in the road. We assume that was Bambi’s Mom. He was very dehydrated and starving. The choice was either feed the baby or watch it starve. This guy was too little to fend for itself. Bambi has never been restrained or fenced and runs freely with the local Herd, visiting us whenever he likes. Hunting is not allowed in our community and most neighbors enjoy and are protective of the wildlife we share the land with. Many feed them as well, especially in the food scarce months. All of the deer here are almost tame, and you can approach within feet. Bambi is only slightly tamer than the rest of the herd. The deer here are tamer than the cattle.
    This is another video in the Bambi series. The playlist "The Bambi Chronicles" is a series of videos going back to our first evening with Bambi. You can start at the beginning and see Bambi grow a little every day. If you like our videos, please click like, share and subscribe to our channel. We will be posting daily as long as Bambi comes by for visits. @Kitchen Window Wildlife

      The biggest danger Bambi faces is getting hit by a car on a dark night. The reflective collar makes it easier for drivers to see him and not run him over. We designed the Bambi collar with a soft ribbon and a two snap closure so if he gets the collar caught in the brush, on a branch, on an antler etc. it would break away and not cause him any harm. The snaps are like a western shirt. Pops off as soon as it snags. Bambi has already been through several collars. They snag, pop off and he walks away. We appreciate you watching our channel.

    If I may suggest, the new collar u put on Bambi is a bit tight, it will more likely to bother him during his regurgitating process. I watch Jimmy Huston antlers, he has multiple elastic collars on few of his deer, the collars usually lasts min of 3-4 month before he puts new ones back on them.

      Yes, Bambi got a new collar shortly after this video was made. Thank You for caring about Bambi.

    Just a heads-up what kind of milk do you feed him? Cow's can't be digested well.

    • @kitchenwindowwildlife
      @kitchenwindowwildlife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, when Bambi first came home with us, all we had was whole cow's milk, which we warmed for him and he loved. However after the first evening, we researched what was best and all of the experts say fawns should be given milk replacer or goat's milk. We bought both and he would not drink either; we tried several times with both choices and he refused, would not even wet his tongue. So of course we gave him the whole milk and he enthusiastically drank it down each and every time. Whenever we would try the alternatives we would just get "the look" and he would back off. So it has been whole cows milk all the way. When he was a baby he also had the deer protein pellets which we would soak in vegetable broth to make a mush so he could readily eat it; organic oatmeal, steamed, smashed organic carrots and thinly sliced organic apples. It has been our pleasure to help Bambi grow up healthy and strong since he first approached us for help after his Mom was killed in early July. If you have not seen him at his smallest size take a look at an earlier video (Day 2 or Day 3). Please consider subscribing, all money we may make through TH-cam advertising will be used for Animal Food. Thank You and Happy New Year To You and Your Family. Thank You for watching and your concern for Bambi, we really appreciate it.

    Looks like he's beginning to out grow his reflective collar; is there a plan to replace/adjust it for growth?

    • @kitchenwindowwildlife
      @kitchenwindowwildlife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching and your concern for Bambi's welfare. The collars appear to be tighter than they actually are as they slide down his neck to the stopping point. Even then there is a two finger gap in the soft ribbon. Our videos are not in real time, we are actually about two weeks behind in posting video. His collar was replaced shortly after this video was made. They are made with snaps so if it becomes snagged on a branch, a fence post, an antler it will break away and do no harm to Bambi. It has been our pleasure to help Bambi grow up healthy and strong since he first approached us for help after his Mom was killed in early July. If you have not seen him at his smallest size take a look at an earlier video (Day 2 or Day 3). Thanks for watching and commenting. Bambi's appetite varies depending on what time of day he arrives and how much he has eaten in the wild. He is a hearty eater for sure! If you have not seen Bambi as a baby take a look back at some earlier videos taken after he followed us home (Day 2 or Day 3) asking for help when his Mom was hit and killed. Please consider subscribing. Thank You.
