  • Before World War II, everyday life for Jews varied greatly. After Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party rose to power, Jewish life in Germany and throughout Europe changed forever. This narrated compilation of home movies provides glimpses into what was lost during the Holocaust through scenes of people walking and socializing in the street, dining in a cafe, celebrating holidays and birthdays, playing in a yard, vacationing, walking into school, exiting their synagogue, and more. The footage was shot in Poland, Germany, Denmark, Austria, Czechoslovakia, the Netherlands, the Soviet Union, and Trinidad.

Thanks for taking the time to upload these mini documentaries and share with the rest of the world a piece of history.

Yes, they were. They were very smart though. Just think if they had turned all that talent towards good and not evil. How better the world would be. The war was a total waste of humanity on all sides. Over 800,000 German soldiers lost their lives in the battle of Stalingrad alone. This is not counting all the lives lost on the allies sides and Holocaust (including Roma, disabled people, homosexuals, people against the regime in any way including those in the military, arts, politics, etc.). Just a horrible and unnecessary waste. I'm not even touching on the horrendous suffering and trauma. There are no words, really.

I ended up here due to research and I felt I had to leave a comment. Sometimes, with academic distance, or even just the distance of time, you can be aware of the horror of this event but without really feeling it. You can kid yourself that it was so far off it could never happen again, and that humans could never be so cruel and barbaric today, but watching this footage has stunned and disturbed me, because in these images all distance becomes invisible. I'm glad this footage exists to document these people and families, and I feel privileged to have been able to view it, this window into lives that did not know how things would change. Thank you for the resource. It is not the barbaric murderers we ought to know the faces of, it's of their many victims. I will think about this often. Thank you.

Whenever I have the chance to pass through a predominantly Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn I love to watch the parents and their children on the way to a synagogue. It's the best thing that they can do,to help continue their religious traditions that had been taken away from so many during the Holocaust. Through my grandmother I am of the descent that made life a horrific existence for so many millions of innocent men, women and children. As a child I was told never to talk about my grandmother's background as we did live in a partially Jewish neighborhood. My friends were of all different backgrounds. In my home we were never taught to hate others.Thank God for the grandparents and parents that we had.

It's positive to hear that you appreciate and respect the efforts of parents and children in a Jewish neighborhood to maintain their religious traditions. Supporting and preserving cultural and religious practices can indeed be an important way to honor and remember the history and resilience of a community.
It's also encouraging to hear that in your upbringing, you were not taught to hate others and had friends from diverse backgrounds. Embracing diversity and promoting understanding among different cultures and religions is essential for fostering a harmonious society.
However, it's important to acknowledge the historical context and the atrocities committed during the Holocaust. While you mention that your grandmother was of a background that played a role in the suffering of millions, it's crucial to remember that individuals are responsible for their own actions, and it's not fair to hold present generations accountable for the sins of their ancestors.🦒🦄🦓

Many Jews that left before WWII left because of the pogroms that swept shtetls in Eastern Europe in the early 20th century. It’s why my family left Poland in the 1910s. Most of the families recorded here are either from bigger cities or more western parts of Europe, so they had less reason to leave, but even those who wished to leave may have been unable to afford the cost of travel and immigration.

The Nazis were people who were raised with a dislike for Jews, and were surrounded by neighbours, friends, and a larger community that detested Jews, who had no problem whatsoever slandering them and laughing about them. It was a sickness all through European society. They were not "normal" people. They were highly prejudiced and seriously considered the Jews to be greedy and a lower form of human being, and often excused this hatred by saying the Jews killed Jesus.

My brother-in-law was brought up Jewish but is not a practicing Jew. My sister, who is married to him, was brought up Christian but is not a practicing Christian. They exposed their daughter to both religions while she was growing up. Their daughter, now in her 30s, is not religious (as far as I know) but she knows that antisemitism continues to exist in the cultural DNA around the world and for that reason decided to not get her DNA to learn of her ethnic ancestry because the record of the results would exist on the company’s records. As you indicated, “I AM JEWISH”, so with my niece. In the back of her mind/heart is the weight of the knowledge of the Holocaust and the awareness of groups in the U.S. and around the world still promoting antisemitism, and concern for what could happen in the future. Yes, in the 1930s, everything was fine/normal….until it wasn’t. 😥😡😥

At 17:42 it mentions the man who came to Akron, Ohio and established a photography studio. I grew up there 1949 -1969 and wonder how many of my schoolmates were from families from Europe. We didn't talk about WWII even though four uncle's were in the Armed Forces then. I wish I could talk to them now to ask many questions. So glad to know this man's family escaped the horrors. Thank you for posting this. God bless these innocent people. 🙏

Thank you for this film. It’s so very important for all people, especially people who really wish to understand why we Jews in America have found the past eight days since the hostage situation in the synagogue in Colleyville, Texas, a week ago yesterday, so disturbingly difficult.
It follows a rapidly increasing number of violent incidents of Jew Hate in the USA.
This film shows the happy everyday life of people taken by tourists to Europe on vacation or families just like yours and mine having fun.
The only difference is the time and place and, perhaps for you, the people shown are Jews.
Please know in advance this is not another historic film showing the atrocities or anything violent or murderous that occurred in the years following the film. What it shows, in a very poignant way, is far worse. All that was truly destroyed. It is only 30 minutes of footage. Please take the time to understand why we are horrified that we have fellow Americans championing the regime that wiped out all you will see. Among these were the part of my paternal grandfather’s family that never emigrated to America 🇺🇸 at the turn of the 20th century in 1912.

I understand that recent events, such as the hostage situation in Colleyville, Texas, and the increasing number of anti-Semitic incidents in the United States, have been deeply disturbing and difficult for the Jewish community. It is important to acknowledge and address such acts of hate and violence.
While I don't have the specific details about the film you mentioned, it seems to be focusing on the everyday lives of Jewish people before the atrocities of the Holocaust occurred. It is crucial to remember and honor the lives that were lost and the immense destruction caused by the Holocaust. Understanding the historical context and the impact it had on individuals and communities is an important part of promoting empathy and preventing such tragedies from happening again.
It is disheartening to hear about fellow Americans championing ideologies that were responsible for the destruction you mentioned. It is essential for society to stand against hate, discrimination, and violence in all forms, and to foster a culture of inclusivity, understanding, and respect.
