Agreed, simply stunning remastering by Cameron & his team,….I really don’t care what Purist think about FILM GRAIN, I bought a Samsung 85inch & a Panasonic 4K player so I can see these films with little to no film grain😂😂😂😂…and Abyss, True Lies & Aliens all deliver perfectly….Abyss & Aliens is dam near as good as Avatar 1 & 2 for me….Thx’s Cameron 🎥🍿
I Hope the Academy gives Sigourney Weaver an Honorary Oscar one day, if she doesn’t win a Competitive one. She’s been too good in her Movies, to be Ignored!
While I do think she is really good in this series, she's also a nepotism beneficiary that probably never would've gotten this and other roles if her dad wasn't a TV executive with a lot of connections. So, mixed feelings about the idea of her getting an Oscar for it.

0:25 I would still recommend people to watch the theatrical version first. If only because you miss quite a bit of background information about what happened, and that makes it more tense. After that it is very nice to watch the special edition. Cheers!
This is my favorite film of all time and it’s not even something I need to think too much about. I’ve watched this film every year since it came out on VHS.
From a 52 guy, I watched my copy yesterday and I can say it look damn awesome! Saw it in theater at the time, and have the DVD + BD. Playing both the BD and 4K mkv files side by side (just for curiosity) with VLC on my OLED 65", the 4K is FAR superior in every way. The grain is still there but more subtle and all the scenes where it look more or less "waxy", is the same on BD, it is related to the master, not DNR, it's just the BD grain is so apparent that viewer can think there is more details initially in the shots, which is not the case. The 4K look modern, indeed, but in the right way. The grain purist won't like it, but the new look is "different", not "bad" as many reviewer are saying. Not only for the update visuals but also the awesome audio, the packaging and the included extras. I HIGHLY RECOMMENDED IT 😁

It won't be a problem. The only reason this occurred is because Disney's supply chain dropped the ball on the number of units they produced (in error). Paramount and others wouldn't have made the same mistake.

I agree! What I do is I take an x-acto knife to veeerrryyy carefully pick up a corner of the sticker and very carefully peel it off. Any sticky residue that remains, a little bit of rubbing alcohol on a q-tip usually takes care of it, with minimal/no damage if you are careful.
Use a little heat. Hair dryer should be fine. That way it's no chemicals. But yes rubbing alcohol is tried and true. But it can eat through the art if scrubbed a bit. I've had bad experience with other foiled slips.
It’s not that they want “more” grain, they just want the grain that was there not removed. All film has grain and grain is detail. When you remove grain you remove detail. That’s like taking your favorite painting and removing the brushstrokes from it. So basically Cameron has scrubbed the grain away and then used A.I. to film in the gabs and over-sharpened the images to compensate. Plus the colors do t look right imo.
Grain is not detail in itself, it is noise in front of the details, an artifact of the film medium. That said denoising is very hard and removing grain noise usually results in a smeared, vaseline looks because the algorithms have no idea what is true detail and what is just noise. Denoisers have gotten more intelligent and better over time though and Aliens is a decent example of it but denoising will always be trade off. A cleaner image vs some true detail getting lost. *edit When I said Aliens look decent I was only referring to the denoising. Otherwise it is an atrocity and an example of lazyness. They didn't even do a proper 4k scan, they used the same assets they got when they did the bluray version and just upscaled it. It is not even in real HDR, it is just SDR in HDR container. Really, I could just watch my 1080p rip from my HTPC and use my graphics cards Nvidia Super Resolution and SDR to HDR upscaler features and get similar results. Probably even better as far as HDR is concerned even if the effect is just faked.

I just watched it last night. The movie looks better than it ever has. The level of detail particularly on the close ups of faces is amazing. I recommended that people check it out for themselves and make their own judgement before falling for the negativity out there.
Great review Adam. I think you gave a fair and honest take on this revision and transfer. I admit the first time I watched it I was disappointed, however I watched it a second time and will watch it again today for a third time. I am so used to the dark nature of the older editions and the new detail in this one is pretty awesome. The inconsistency of the picture took me out at first, but I’m excited to watch again. And yes! The audio is incredible.
@@jctai100 According to another review I watched, and the same question was asked, that it is indeed a native 4k transfer. I didn't do any research myself but, personally, I think it looks amazing. Like it came out last year instead of the 80's.
There's scratches in the same spots as the old Blu-ray so they didn't even bother to scan it in at 4K. It's also missing sound effects like the ramp closing when Spunkmeier is about to take off.
Still to this day I cannot get my head around the turrets scene being removed from the original theatrical cut?! I know we now have the extended cut but going back to original theatrical and VHS release to not have one of the best scenes in the original release just stuns me! Had aliens failed back in 86 we probably would never have seen that scene 🤯

Sry I don't agree the extra footage is really good imo but I will say there is one scene that does make me cringe abit in the extended cut and sadly again it involves bill paxton when he's in the drop ship bragging about their protection for Ripley and the nukes on board..! That scene they could have left out!

I remember going to see this movie way back in the 80s in downtown Chicago. It was playing with Lamberto Bavas' Demons and I enjoyed both movies. I'm gonna pick this one up for sure. Hopefully, they'll put Demons on 4K one day soon, so I can have them both.

It puzzles me how there was never a true sequel to Aliens. Alien 3 was a prison story; while Resurrection was in a kind of Frankenstein lab in space with pirates and smugglers. What I mean is Aliens 2, a space marines' story like we got in comics, novels and video games. The fans still want it, just no one delivers.
Ok, I love this movie. I saw it at the cinema, I bought it on VHS (£65 back in the day), I bought the Special Edition (which was only available for 100 days….on VHS, I bought the DVD, I bought the box set, and I bought the Blu-ray box set. This 4k release is the only one with a respectable picture quality. All the others had terrible grain (from the Kodak film stock they used). It didn’t matter on VHS, but the Blu-ray looked awful. Now, at last, the picture is amazing. Stay frosty
thanks for the review. I ve got my copy now and have seen about 1/3 of the movie in 4k HDR. It looks very crisp and detailed. I don't care so much for heavy film grain, and imo glorifying a lot of film grain vs hating digitally cleaned up versions is also not holy! (MY honest opionion). some (fhd) blurays of 80s classics on 1080p bluray had too much grain, which i found more annoying. More so than the 4k AI treated Aliens (1986 ) which is my nr 1 favo film ever, so I just CAN NOT hate any version of this film. I saw the original theatrical in 1986 in the cinema and was blown away by it. Also love the Special Edition, i bought that on DVD and later the 4film Alien BD box set with the theatrical and sp edtns and lots of bonus materials. Nice that this 4k version of Aliens has atmos audio. I'll go and watch the rest of the 4k S.E. movie now and the new 30min bonus feature.

I really like your reviews, Adam. I find some American accents a bit grating to listen to, but I like listening to you. You could narrate an audiobook. Anyway, really looking forward to this. I prefer the original Alien but this is still a great film. And although I'm almost 50, I dont remember any scenes with gun turrets, so I guess I havent seen the special edition before.
The picture quality amazing! Only thing missing was the LFE channel on this transfer. With this movie, you see the movie, you hear the movie, you don’t get to experience the movie.
the 4k image on Aliens is literally horrible. Seek out some more information and maybe some images of how it looks yourself before going anywhere near it.
Alien 4k was my first 4k experience and it blew me away. Aliens 4k looks incredible. The details are so awesome it looks like it was released last year.
@@tedmetalhead6177 Every pixel of that Aliens "4k" is literally just fake AI generated detail. Like in reality that is unquestionable and objective. The subjective part is whether this fake image is successful and many professionals and videophiles can see that it looks awful. But some less familiar with film and how things are supposed to look are being tricked by the sharpness of the fake image. It is to be expected tbh, these are some of the biggest titles to hit 4k so of course the more general consumers are picking this up and saying hey looks sharp thats cool. They probably have their TVs still set to Vivid LOL

Thanks, really appreciate the honest review. Looks like they've changed the color palette from 'Cameron Futuristic Blue Steel' to 'generic Teal and Orange' with overdone HDR whites, but slightly less wax than T2. Either way, its the best Aliens we're gonna get, so we'll all buy it. Though its disappointing. EDIT: more you look at those shots, the worse it looks... 🤔
I personally think the blu ray looks better. I purchased the 4 k and the disc was defective and had numerous scratches on it. I returned it but Amazon was sold out. I don't think it's better than the blu ray. Aliens looked too waxy. Not happy with the video. It has to much digital mess going on. I think it deserves more of C on the video. Audio was pretty good
Aliens looks fantastick, no wax what so ever, you can see things now, that you could`nt see before, Aliens is one of my favorite films of all time, and i hate it when film grain gets washed away, not this time, James Cameron has broken that code. This picture is just awesome.
Aliens on 4K blew me away. Great transfer but I was expecting the part of Burk being cocooned and bumping into Ripley but I was wrong but it still was great.👍👍
there were some weird things the AI chose to do when reducing the film that cameron clearly didn't care to put any effort into fixing. mostly the pours in a lot of the actors faces looking extra deep, making them look older. other than that though, this does look pretty good. i might not like the sentiment behind this whole thing, especially not on a technical level, but it really is amazing seeing all the sets in such high detail.
Movie guy. … do you even Have a real 7.2.4 atmos settup ? And what screen and size are you running ? Cause this movie says it has a atmos mix. But no sounds come from the top or back. Basically a 5.1 mix.
"A subtle refinement" because the HDR is literally just fake. It's subtle because it is just the rec709 drag and dropped into the HDR colour space LMAO. Then Every single second looks like a plastic and fake over-sharpened mess. This is not good. It does not look good it looks awful. To the general mindless consumer these seem to look good though LOL.
I felt this release was a disaster. Grain is part of the detail, something Cameron doesn't seem to understand. He might not like it, but that's just a fact of the medium he shot the film on. Removing grain is removing detail. If that wasn't bad enough, he then ran it through an AI upscaler (the original negative wasn't re-scanned, it uses the master from the original Blu-ray) which then attempts to fill in the detail that was originally scrubbed, and it does so very poorly.
@@benpascall4297 I don't think you understand how grain works. It's not an 'extra layer' on top of another layer, it's part of the film. The AI was used to artificially insert detail that wasn't there. You should research this more. Saying 'nothing was scrubbed' is objectively false.
@@myzamau428 please don’t patronise me. I’ve been collecting physical media since VHS days and I know very much what grain is and am a massive fan and defender of it in film stock of all kinds. I also wouldn’t condescend Cameron, one of the modern worlds most achieved film makers to say that he also doesn’t understand what film grain is. At the end of the day, it’s the look he wants for HIS films, so accept it as his choice. I’ll defend film grain to the hilt when people complain about it. I have a degree in film and have a high end setup, including an LG G3 display. The AI hasn’t added anything which wasn’t originally there in the OCN. It’s removed the grain and changed the colour of the movie. If you’re trying to say it’s the same result as T2, I would hazard a guess that you don’t actually own this disc and are just another bandwagon jumper.

Ah, it looks like you noticed Ripley's Ai adjusted jaw line. 1:56 . Added to give her a more masculine look for that scene. Watch the early DVD'S you'll see the difference.
The problem is that the grain itself IS the film. That's what people don't understand. When you are removing grain you are removing the pixelage itself right out of the image. That's what you grain haters just don't see to get.@@tdg223
I agree to a point, so long as faces and stuff aren't taking on that waxy look - you know, to the point where people start looking like what you imagine an android might look like. A little bit of that with True Lies, but I personally think that the Aliens transfer is great. I loved it.

Word is Aliens didn't even go back to the camera negative for this release and instead used the 2011 2K scan and just upscaled it!

Still to this day I cannot get my head around the turrets scene being removed from the original theatrical cut?! I know we now have the extended cut but going back to original theatrical and VHS release to not have one of the best scenes in the original release just stuns me! Had aliens failed back in 86 we probably would never have seen that scene 🤯

Sry I don't agree the extra footage is really good imo but I will say there is one scene that does make me cringe abit in the extended cut and sadly again it involves bill paxton when he's in the drop ship bragging about their protection for Ripley and the nukes on board..! That scene they could have left out!
@@moonfuzz8444 you misunderstood me, I think the extended cut is the shit! And the 40 miles of bad road refers to how much more insane the extended cut is to the theatrical cut. The extended cut is the way to go no doubt and yes the sentry gun scene is killer good!
I watched it Sunday and am so pleased! I have long history with this film going back to 1986 and must say again so pleased.
I remember going to see this movie way back in the 80s in downtown Chicago. It was playing with Lamberto Bavas' Demons and I enjoyed both movies. I'm gonna pick this one up for sure. Hopefully, they'll put Demons on 4K one day soon, so I can have them both.
Demons, and the less good but still watchable, Demons 2, are both available on 4K (by Arrow Video). At least they are in the UK. Hope that helps 😊

They were both released together by synapse films in 4K in the US. I imported the arrow of the first film from the UK though.

It puzzles me how there was never a true sequel to Aliens. Alien 3 was a prison story; while Resurrection was in a kind of Frankenstein lab in space with pirates and smugglers. What I mean is Aliens 2, a space marines' story like we got in comics, novels and video games. The fans still want it, just no one delivers.

Ok, I love this movie. I saw it at the cinema, I bought it on VHS (£65 back in the day), I bought the Special Edition (which was only available for 100 days….on VHS, I bought the DVD, I bought the box set, and I bought the Blu-ray box set. This 4k release is the only one with a respectable picture quality. All the others had terrible grain (from the Kodak film stock they used). It didn’t matter on VHS, but the Blu-ray looked awful. Now, at last, the picture is amazing. Stay frosty

thanks for the review. I ve got my copy now and have seen about 1/3 of the movie in 4k HDR. It looks very crisp and detailed. I don't care so much for heavy film grain, and imo glorifying a lot of film grain vs hating digitally cleaned up versions is also not holy! (MY honest opionion). some (fhd) blurays of 80s classics on 1080p bluray had too much grain, which i found more annoying. More so than the 4k AI treated Aliens (1986 ) which is my nr 1 favo film ever, so I just CAN NOT hate any version of this film. I saw the original theatrical in 1986 in the cinema and was blown away by it. Also love the Special Edition, i bought that on DVD and later the 4film Alien BD box set with the theatrical and sp edtns and lots of bonus materials.
Nice that this 4k version of Aliens has atmos audio. I'll go and watch the rest of the 4k S.E. movie now and the new 30min bonus feature.

Anyway, really looking forward to this. I prefer the original Alien but this is still a great film. And although I'm almost 50, I dont remember any scenes with gun turrets, so I guess I havent seen the special edition before.

The picture quality amazing! Only thing missing was the LFE channel on this transfer. With this movie, you see the movie, you hear the movie, you don’t get to experience the movie.
Alien 1979 looked incredible in 4K was waiting for the 4k release of Aliens, might have to check it out again
the 4k image on Aliens is literally horrible. Seek out some more information and maybe some images of how it looks yourself before going anywhere near it.
Alien 4k was my first 4k experience and it blew me away. Aliens 4k looks incredible. The details are so awesome it looks like it was released last year.
@@tedmetalhead6177 Every pixel of that Aliens "4k" is literally just fake AI generated detail. Like in reality that is unquestionable and objective.
The subjective part is whether this fake image is successful and many professionals and videophiles can see that it looks awful. But some less familiar with film and how things are supposed to look are being tricked by the sharpness of the fake image. It is to be expected tbh, these are some of the biggest titles to hit 4k so of course the more general consumers are picking this up and saying hey looks sharp thats cool. They probably have their TVs still set to Vivid LOL

Thanks, really appreciate the honest review. Looks like they've changed the color palette from 'Cameron Futuristic Blue Steel' to 'generic Teal and Orange' with overdone HDR whites, but slightly less wax than T2. Either way, its the best Aliens we're gonna get, so we'll all buy it. Though its disappointing.

I personally think the blu ray looks better. I purchased the 4 k and the disc was defective and had numerous scratches on it. I returned it but Amazon was sold out. I don't think it's better than the blu ray. Aliens looked too waxy. Not happy with the video. It has to much digital mess going on. I think it deserves more of C on the video. Audio was pretty good

Aliens looks fantastick, no wax what so ever, you can see things now, that you could`nt see before, Aliens is one of my favorite films of all time, and i hate it when film grain gets washed away, not this time, James Cameron has broken that code. This picture is just awesome.
You can see things you couldn't see before because he used AI which makes guesses as to what it should be. The detail is computer-generated.
I dont care what anyone says. I want this 4K so bad. I have worn out my VHS, my DVD case, my Blu-ray case. Now its time to watch this 4K to death

Aliens on 4K blew me away. Great transfer but I was expecting the part of Burk being cocooned and bumping into Ripley but I was wrong but it still was great.👍👍
That is a deleted scene and has never been included in either cut of the movie.
there were some weird things the AI chose to do when reducing the film that cameron clearly didn't care to put any effort into fixing. mostly the pours in a lot of the actors faces looking extra deep, making them look older. other than that though, this does look pretty good. i might not like the sentiment behind this whole thing, especially not on a technical level, but it really is amazing seeing all the sets in such high detail.

Have a real 7.2.4 atmos settup ? And what screen and size are you running ? Cause this movie says it has a atmos mix. But no sounds come from the top or back. Basically a 5.1 mix.

"A subtle refinement" because the HDR is literally just fake. It's subtle because it is just the rec709 drag and dropped into the HDR colour space LMAO.

This is not good. It does not look good it looks awful. To the general mindless consumer these seem to look good though LOL.
I felt this release was a disaster. Grain is part of the detail, something Cameron doesn't seem to understand. He might not like it, but that's just a fact of the medium he shot the film on. Removing grain is removing detail. If that wasn't bad enough, he then ran it through an AI upscaler (the original negative wasn't re-scanned, it uses the master from the original Blu-ray) which then attempts to fill in the detail that was originally scrubbed, and it does so very poorly.
Nothing was scrubbed. The grain removal isn’t like normal DNR, it removed the grain filter and leaves the detail. The AI is used for colouration.
@@benpascall4297 I don't think you understand how grain works. It's not an 'extra layer' on top of another layer, it's part of the film. The AI was used to artificially insert detail that wasn't there. You should research this more. Saying 'nothing was scrubbed' is objectively false.
@@myzamau428 please don’t patronise me. I’ve been collecting physical media since VHS days and I know very much what grain is and am a massive fan and defender of it in film stock of all kinds. I also wouldn’t condescend Cameron, one of the modern worlds most achieved film makers to say that he also doesn’t understand what film grain is. At the end of the day, it’s the look he wants for HIS films, so accept it as his choice.
I’ll defend film grain to the hilt when people complain about it. I have a degree in film and have a high end setup, including an LG G3 display.
The AI hasn’t added anything which wasn’t originally there in the OCN. It’s removed the grain and changed the colour of the movie. If you’re trying to say it’s the same result as T2, I would hazard a guess that you don’t actually own this disc and are just another bandwagon jumper.

I agree to a point, so long as faces and stuff aren't taking on that waxy look - you know, to the point where people start looking like what you imagine an android might look like. A little bit of that with True Lies, but I personally think that the Aliens transfer is great. I loved it.
Not sure if you're trolling, but the grain is literally the picture, without it you're looking at bright light being shone through transparent film...
