    When my kids became adults, I told them that I am not a storage locker. I told my kids that if their stuff is so important to them that it is still in my home, that it should be in their home. I set a date and then told them if they didn't come to get it by said date, it would be donated. They came and got their stuff. Now my space is clean and clear and I know where everything is.

    I also love decluttering and keeping only things that serve me. I never tire of this topic because it's helpful to have continual reminders.

    I moved twice in the past 3 years. I've worked on keeping things organized and in it's rightful place.
    Having a clutter free home is good for your mental and emotional well being. It won't solve all of your problems but it'll help you feel less overwhelmed.
    And like you said, be careful throwing things out randomly in the name of cleaning. 😁

      I agree with you 100%! It is definitely good for the mental and emotional well being. At least it is in my case for sure.

    Wow! Two huge bags of paper certainly sounded like you were drowning! 😮 So happy for you that they are leaving your home and I believe you will definitely feel a weight lift off your shoulders for managing to deal with that “stuff”. ❤
    Making cut and dried decisions about your belongings isn’t always easy, especially if there is a memory/emotional attachment to it (as you stated in this post). We need face up to what is truly trash and not of donation quality and deal with it then and there, but if there is a question on an item, I have found that as long as I don’t stuff it out of sight where it is then out of mind I will see it and eventually make a decision on it…many times to let it go. My Mum passed almost 10 years ago and my Dad did a few years later. When my siblings emptied the house (I live out of country) a couple came down for a visit and brought me a couple car loads of things. Many of the things were items I had no idea the story behind them and neither did they. After offering my 3 grown sons to take whatever they would want for their homes I was eventually after a few years, able to let things go. There are a few items that mean something to me from my childhood that I will keep until I die and they are out on display as a sweet reminder of my wonderful parents but they are only things and we need to remember that and not enshrine our loved ones in items that can be destroyed. Writing down stories to share with grandchildren are a lovely way to remember loved ones that are gone. I have sadness with missing them but I also have hope as a follower of Jesus Christ and knowledge they were as well, that I will see them again. ❤ Thank you for this post.

      Thank you so much for sharing your story and your experience. It is not an easy process. Letting go of people, places and things can be overwhelming if you’re not ready. I do believe that when ready (mentally, emotionally and physically) to cleanse, it helps get thru it easier & faster. I do my best to keep our daughters updated on “things” of meaning vs just things so that when my husband and I are long gone, it will help them to thru the things in our home. Wishing you all the best in 2025.
      Thank you for watching and your support. Happy New Year!! 🦋

      Riiiight! It's madness out here with the evolving door of trends. Long gone are the days where styles lasted a decade (roaring 20s, the 30s, the 80s). Now it's this year, last year, last week, the month before. Dear heavens I cannot keep up. Send help! lol

      I know that feeling. It’s so overwhelming. I don’t mind sharing at all. It was done on my phone but not for TH-cam purposes so the formatting is not ideal but will show the before and after. I have to put it all together and may do it as a shorts. I will post in my community when I have it completed.

    I have LOTS of paper to get rid of. One side must be blank & no personal info on the other side. I take (we're talking sometimes 1' high!) to Kinkos and get them to glue one side TO MAKE SCRATCH PADS OF VARIOUS SIZES (depending on your needs). So, you're re-using paper one more time before trashing. I also use the shredder which takes up less room in the trash. With this method, I haven't purchased note pads for writing on in decades.

    🙋🏽‍♀️ I have an idea!!! Organize a tote day 1/ month. Have them each bring 1 tote to the livingroom. U all visit and go thru the totes together. Maybe u agree to spend 1hr on the totes. But u have snacks and do it together in the livingroom while u visit. It's already scheduled that we know this visit is FOR totes. At the next tote visit u bring up 1 new tote each, go thru the tote. Then bring up the previous tote and see if u can consolidate 2 totes into 1, (no pressure tho) Each month they can come spend 1hr doing this, and by the end of the year u might find 12 totes has turned into 6 totes. Maybe u can sell some of the empty totes and buy totes that match the better totes. Maybe they find stuff they don't want anymore, that they can sell and pocket the cash ❤ maybe after spending a year going thru all their memories together and with you, they will continue to come go thru a tote every month for years to come having less and less of a need to keep all the stuff in the totes. Maybe they find things they want to bring home and keep with them. Maybe they find cute things to donate to their younger cousins. Or things they need to give back to old friends ❤

    I have a room up stairs that belongs to my daughter whom has not lived at home for 15 years, “Her” things. are still there! Why? My son and his wife sleep there when they come. My oldest son is in the other room…. It is his he lives at home. And will always. He is disabled. I am not sure what and how to do things with her room. She comes home maybe once every 5 years or so…. I am Oh so ready to toss it all!

    • @LifewithLissette
      @LifewithLissette  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is all a slippery slope and not an easy decision. Maybe let your daughter know that you will be going thru her things to declutter her room and ask her what she wants to keep. Anything not on the list can be donated or thrown away. Sometimes we have to take the lead. I have thrown quite a few things away that belonged to our daughters. Our goal for this year is to have them go thru at least one tote during every visit. Best of luck to you. Happy New Year!! Thank you for watching and your support. 🦋
