LEGO Mindstorms Robot Inventor 51515 Set In-Depth Review

  • The LEGO Mindstorms Robot Inventor 51515 is the next generation of LEGO robotics. Some fans question if this new system is actually better, or worse in some cases than the ev3. However, I really think that the positives outweigh the negatives.

    Important: The programming app is the same across ALL platforms, so the tablet interface, which I show most commonly, is the same as the computer one. Powered up motors are completely compatible with this new robotics system, more on this in the datalogging section.

    One the big issues I see with the new design is that thin wire that connects the motors and sensors to the brick as a weak point as a teacher we use the EV3 mindstorm kits in the classroom and they see a lot physical abuse .

    I can understand why people see the tetris style display as a downgrade from an actual screen but I think it will age much better than the previous models because its a timeless design. No matter how modern and expensive its hardware was, it would be outdated in a couple of years because technology just advances too quickly. Reducing it to the bare minimum and instead using your phone as an interface however will make it stay up-to-date for a much longer time. I think it was a great decision.

    The FIRST Lego Robotics Invention System (yellow RCX) is so popular because it is very easy for kids to build a robot. It uses studded bricks which are so children-friendly.
    It even can be combined with LEGO City models children already had in their home for many fun projects.
    I remembered my students build sumo robots with laughters and big smile in their face.
    After LEGO change it into more Technic in 2006 and named it 'Mindstorms', children not having the same easiness as before. It operates better and better for each new releases, yes of course.
    But less fun and not as easy as the first.

    Fischertechnik has had encoder motors with absolute positions for years. And fischertechnik also have a little camera for their robots which is also very cool. I'm sad that mindstorms haven't a camera for his robots bc that would make a really cool add on.

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fischertechnik isn't compatible with LEGO technic parts. Technic parts allow you to build literally anything, even crazy speed transmission gearboxes! Yeah camera support would've been nice. Mindsensors actually made a third party camera sensor for both the lego mindstorms NXT and EV3 systems! I'm sure they or another third party will make a third party camera sensor for the new system!

    Ordered my new LEGO Mindstorms Robot Inventor set! Loving my EV3 and NXT 1.0 + 2.0! Really wish I had the original Robotics Invention System, but sadly didn't get my first Mindstorms until around 2007. Super impressed that out of all the robots I've owned since I was younger, the NXT 1.0 was not only the one that I still enjoy today just because it can be rebuilt and reprogrammed, but it also was pretty much the only one to actually be built to last 13+ years. Sadly, very few of the WowWee robots I've owned really lasted, and ones that did just got boring.
    Also, does the new Mindstorms brick remind anyone of an iPod Nano 7th gen or iPod Touch with the home button?
    And I've been playing with the programming software and cannot figure out how to get to Python programming.

      the hub is identical in spike prime and robot inventor, they're just different colors. their selection of motors/sensors is different. robot inventor has 4 medium angular motors and 1 color sensor and 1 ultrasonic sensor, while the spike prime set has 2 medium angular motors, one large angular motor, 1 touch sensor, 1 color sensor, and 1 ultrasonic. The spike prime kit is designed for classroom use, which comes equipped with basic lesson plans and an organization tray. The robot inventor is designed for home use.

The 1st line says "GET STARTE" and the 2nd line is just the "D" from the word "STARTED". It should either be "GET STARTED" all on 1 line, or the word "STARTED" on the 2nd line. The word "STARTED" shouldn't be split onto 2 lines. All the videos I've seen that shows this screen shows the word "STARTED" all in one piece. The video from LEGO at 1:20, shows it written on 2 lines. The video from Dimitri Dekyvere at 0:23 shows it all on 1 line. It's not THAT big of a deal, but something isn't right about it. The reason the EV3 boots so slowly is its booting an entire operating system. It runs on the GNU/Linux system, meaning it has to load a bunch of things before launching. Simply put, the EV3 boots up as an entire PC, which was intended so you could boot custom firmware from a MicroSD card.

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually, the main reason why it boots so slow is due to the incredibly slow ARM9 cpu. You simply can’t have a sophisticated operating system work together with a really slow processor. New hub runs microPython, which is much better for slow processors. My computer usually powers on much faster than the ev3, my iPhone powers up much faster than ev3. That’s because they have extremely fast processors to compensate for the more demanding OS
