Mind Your Manners (1953)

  • This classic stars "Woody" from Dating Dos and Don'ts -- a few years older, but just as out of touch with reality. As "Jack," he goes through this entire film being unbelievably polite, but the weird leer on his face makes you wonder what he's really thinking. Don't miss the soda shop populated by waitresses in Hans Brinker costumes(!), or the montage of adults thinking approvingly of Jack's behavior.

I think the real challenge is learning how to deal with rude people, which they don't really show in this film. It's easy enough to be polite when everyone else is too, but that's not always the case. :/

Believe it or not, but I have brought up my 12 yr old just like this...Why? because I was brought up exactly like this....His manners are beautiful and well polished....When he answers 'yes, sir' or 'yes, ma'am', you should hear the adult...When he holds a door open for either a man or woman, they do everything but kiss him. If MORE parents did this....Well, I do not have to describe it for you.....You know!!!

I liked how the students waited for the bell to ring BEFORE packing up their books as well as waiting for the dismissal from the instructor prior to standing up and leaving. Now middle school, high school, even in colleges, they disrespect the teachers and the their time by snapping books and laptops shut, and the zippers sounding on all of bags 5-10 to minutes before class is over!

It's a shame that today politeness is just not practiced as it should. I view it as entitlement mentality. People feel they are owed something whether they have earned it or not. Just being nice to someone has its own reward, and it doesn't require any effort on your part.

That's so true. Most of the advice given here isn't just about making yourself look good (although that is part of it too). It's about being considerate and thoughtful of others and not just living for yourself. Prior generations, whatever their faults, were generally much less selfish and more mature as individuals. It was a value then. I'm a man in my 30's and I've often wished that at least some of the good ideas and habits of that time were still around today.

My Mom use to have a Day Care and I can say; Not many. Some of the kids we're as old as 13 and had never sat at a table to eat, and so, they didn't know what table manners we're. The parents just didn't teach them anything! So we had to teach Table manners, sharing, hygiene... everything. I remember one kid, who was 10, who use to think it was OK to pee anywhere in the yard even with people watching. Safe to say, he learned some manners later on from us. His parents we're quite embarrassed!

Thank you for such an invitation. Whether you are wealthy or poor; male or female; religious or agnostic; friend or foe, it is my honor and duty to treat and SERVE all humans beings with love, dignity, and honor. A gentleman pays for EVERYTHING! A gentleman is extremely confident and extremely humble. A gentleman protects the oppressed, even if it means he sacrifices his life. Finally, manners, marriage, love, and romance is about sacrifice and self-less service, without compromising values.

I work in schools and can confirm that most kids today are not raised to be polite. Parents need to teach their offspring to yield to an adult when they're trying to go by. Instead, they walk around you, behind you, and nearly run you over. They don't know any better. There are a few exceptions, but not many.

I was in Chile recently and good manners still exist there especially on the buses. Men give up their seats to ladies, young and elderly and to pregnant women. And when you go to the bank or a place where you have to make a line and wait, the elderly and pregnant women always get to go to the front of the line, it is expected and it is done. Why don't they do that in the US?

As goofy as some people may think this is, it is a shame people don't use manners and good behavior with others anymore. I think it is one reason our society is in the shape it is in.

+Armpit Studios Yes, pretty cosmopolitan, and the same "canned music" used on the early, "What's My Line" TV Shows. Similar, but different music in, "Ozzie and Harriet" and the movie, "Terror in the Midnight Sun." I know all this because I'm seventy-one, jazz musician and first generation TV kid. Peace

Yeah, it's funny what our mind's are programed to do… if I hear that one, I immediately expect to see a "Stopette- poof perspiration away" ad come on showing the "new" plastic bottle spraying powder
upwards….. don't think I'll ever know who wrote some of that canned music… some interests me as a musician, others, can't imagine anyone writing it…. Happy Holidays!

We could die in a nuclear explosion today too, and were are closer to nuclear war today than in any time in the last probably 40 years.

They were doing something right back then. Crime was very low. Black neighborhoods were safe and people even left their doors unlocked. Black families were intact and strong. Kids respected their parents and obeyed the law. Yes, there was discrimination and it had to be corrected but the liberal mess left by a generation of social justice warriors has literally destroyed many formerly great American cities not to mention society as a whole. Thank you very much.....

I live in the South, and actually its not much different with our manners today as then. People are surprised at how well mannered we are. We just talk behind people's backs when they're not looking.

Oka,y I checked on PLAY ZM, and it IS "Melody in Mossacins", "recorded in 1940s, heard on radio, commercially recorded", [see below]. Used IIRC on Gumby, though oddly not on Ren and Stimpy which also used Mr.Burns cues [no, Simpsonholics, not THAT Mr.Burns].
Ahh."Melody in Mossacins," great vintage library oiece.

If only people learned that it is okay to be polite. You don't have to bend over backwards to please people but, a simple "excuse me" or a "please" or a "thank you" show people that you care enough to be respectful. There is nothing wrong with being kind, it takes nothing away from you.
