I love this but how things have changed. Each person is an individual in the way that they dress now. Some people hate formal dressing while others relish at the idea of dressing up. It's the cleanliness part that should never go out of style.
+G Boo Just 10 minutes to get up? You are faster than I am nowadays. But when I was 25, I could wake up and get out the door in under 17 minutes. Well, I had to, because of my job. It wasn't any fun doing it.
As I was born in 1951, I can say that the standards presented are familiar to me and variations were suspect. It didn't take much to be critiqued, even an untucked shirt was cause for concern. One young lady I remember from grade school got scolded by sister (I went to Catholic school) because her bangs were slightly teased. It amuses me to see this with the perspective of today's dress codes.
@@William.Shakespeare And the moral of the story kids is don't be ugly and be rich so you can buy designer clothes, or Jesus will send you to Hell to burn for your ugliness even though you were created in his image. XD

It definitely gains respect and trust and defines your character.

@mooncat1965 I agree. Dress has become an afterthought. And I missed the memo that made flip flops de rigueur for pretty much any and all dress occasions. I too am old enough to remember when people actually dressed for success. Now its pretty much anything goes.
I'm glad the mother and father finally appeared! I was beginning to worry about their living situation. And did Don ever get orthodontia? Did Sue wear that same hairstyle the rest of her life? Did the father ever get rid of that moustache?
The never ending juggling act of saving hot water for baths, showers, laundry and dishwasher! Notice that sis has on a BLOUSE instead of a tight T shirt.
My daughter graduated 2 weeks ago. I was shocked at the way people dressed for the event. I'm only 45, but I guess I missed where women stopped wearing panty hose and started pairing flip-flops with a dress -- the few that actually bothered to wear a dress that is. The woman in front of me had her thong hanging out of her extremely low cut jeans. Most of the men wore ball caps the during the entire indoor ceremony. And the air horns were totally unacceptable.
I think it's great that people used to get dressed up to go to dinner and the movies. It made it an event, something to look forward to. And I appreciate it when other people bathe before they leave the house. You want to wear shorts and flip-flops to this very nice restaurant on Valentine's Day? That's between you and the woman you came here with, but please take a shower first.
I am almost 57 and can tell you where i went to Grammar school in maybe 6th 7th grade girls couldn't wear skirts above the knee, now they walk around half naked, teachers used to stand in the hall watching peoples attire and we had a southern English teacher who used to say 'single file down that hall' At least the effort was made then the instill neat dress, etc. then,, now such advice would be considered prying and the parents/parent complaining-- have things changed
Remember that all through the day others are looking at you, judging you, assessing your value to society and your worth as a human being. So keep in mind this handy mnemonic, kiddies: Cleanliness Understatement Neatness & Taste
rah760 I agree (no offense to the other person). People had kids young didn't they? Right after getting married (also young). But if you had a hard time conceiving, you may have been late-bloomer parents right?

Wow. Is that what the girl called makeup? Powder and lipstick that she wiped off anyway? What happened to the concealer, foundation, bronzer, blush, eye shadow, eyeliner, mascara and lipgloss? Makeup sure advanced.
I don't think they should have skipped the bathing portion of the film. Many people don't do that correctly; they forget the belly button hole, between each of their toes, the creases between their legs and genitals, the butthole, and fat people forget to lift up every roll and their necks. It is also important to dry every crevice completely as any moisture left on your body will cause odor.
I don't necessarily like some of the snootiness or ignorance that went along with this era in history, but it can be better than the complete disregard for simple manners or common sense some people can have now. I like variety in my daily outfits, but as long as they still look clean and presentable when going out. Trying to get out of my sloppy sweats wardrobe these days, and there are many others that still can't do that for some reason... xD
@nanlisa...I went to the private catholic schools for 6 years we were required to wear a white pressed shirt, a suit, a tie with a tie clasp, short neatly combed hair and well polished black leather shoes. We were dressed like that every day 6 1/2 hours a day, five days a week. We did not change class rooms for each class we sat in the same seat "all day" except for lunch time. You were not allowed to speak to any student sitting around you and you had to sit with your hands clasped on the desk
People today could learn so much from this. I love the way they dressed in the 1940's, and I think this video should be shown in school. It seems everyone now always looks like a mess. I believe people should wear what they want as long as it looks clean and they look like they actually put a little effort into their appearance.
Well, sort of. Have you notice in the old days, people seem to dress more elegantly at home and in public? This video was a major contribution to that. In today's society, we all look like slobs. When was the last time your neighbor comb his hair or bathe? You see, people's grooming habits have change since the 1940's.
I don't know what time these people get up but it must be pretty damn early in order to shower, eat breakfast, and then have another 25 mins to go back upstairs...ahhh the good ol' days :p
I grew up in the 80s and early 90s and my parents were children and teens of the 50s, and we all had issues. However I adored 80s style as well as 50s, and who do I think dress like crap? people now, in the 2000s. none have style. So I go ahead and keep dressing like I always have and screw anyone who dislikes that.
Amen. I go to Big Lots, SaveALot, Giganties (for fruits and veggies), and lastly WalMart (Where I live their extremely close together) because I learned lone ago you can find stuff cheaper at other places than Walmart (My shopping usually takes an hour or less). It is just something that caught my attention once and I kept an eye on old photos and films..........look on youtube for old 195os baseball games......people dressed very formal by todays standard
@whatevr192 Hey, sorry to hear about that. Like I said you wouldn't have had a problem in my time 25 years+ ago. Plus the dresses went past the knee then too. The only girls in short skirts were the cheerleaders and pep squad. Even our dance team wore matching full length ladies' suits in school colors to the pep rallies. Damn. Rollers, polish, manicures, powder, lipstick ... Society took a lot for granted those days. But they're right about one thing - appearances influence your life greatly. Just go to a fancy store/group of guys/visit in an old T-shirt or a suit and see how you'll be trated. Being clean is far from enough.
Nobody else is responsible but us. There's a difference between being "presentable" and going the full 9 yards. Back in the day, going through the anything close to what you present was strictly reserved for "date nights" or "Sunday Church" attendance when being dressed to the nines was only expected for such occasions, not everyday. It's a matter of determining what's appropriate for the occasion. Back in those days going to that length daily would only get you stared at for being overdone.

if "Don" is paying attention to patterns and colors, Don is gay.

This is actually a really good grooming video and hardly any of this has changed apart from the ammount of bryll cream he spoldges onto his hair
