Inside Mr Xabi Alonso’s Impressive Watch Collection | MR PORTER

- Meet Mr Xabi Alonso, one of the world’s most decorated footballers, a MR PORTER Style Council member - and an enthusiastic collector of fine watches. To mark the arrival of IWC Schaffhausen on MR PORTER, we travelled to Munich to spend a day off with Mr Alonso.
We accompany him as he takes a drive in a classic Porsche 356, walks his British bulldog in the woods, makes a snack for his kids when they return from school, and gets ready to go out for dinner with his wife.
In the film he talks through some of his watch collection and explains how each piece commemorates a landmark life event - from winning the World Cup, European Championship (twice) and Champions League (twice) to getting married (once).

As a watch lover, this short movie exemplifies what I love about watches. Any idiot can go out and buy an expensive watch, but the story behind the watch you buy and the legacy that it has is what truly makes haute horology a true art. I admire Mr. Xabi for perpetuating this fine art in all of its glory.
I really like this guy, seems like he's intelligent and has a great style with appreciation for traditional things. Meanwhile most football stars buying Aventadors and shit, this is much more likeable.

Believe it or not my dad sold him one of these. He works for a shop in the Burlington arcade watches that specialises in IWC for the not part. I'm personally so proud to have his autograph such a humble and nice guy, not to mention being an absolute legend of the game.

Burak Akpinar it's an IWC commercial because they sell them on the site. He had so much in those watch cases - I saw at least one AP and that usually is always worth a mention above an IWC in many cases.

Of course they're featuring IWC watches. That's their business. They got Xabi's name from some high end jeweler or from IWC and they used him in their video. Who cares? This is a cool looking video with cool looking watches. I'm already adding the stuff from this video to my list of Stuff To Get when Powerball finally shows me a little love. Also on the list, most of the stuff from The Talented Mr. Ripley and The English Patient. And some stuff from all the English GQ videos. Nothing from the Trump collection...because I have class AND a soul.
What tends to happen is that Xabi has an agent who would look for certain types of relationships. Such as what watches Xabi has or cars, food, beauty products or anything you can think of.
And then they approach different brands to build relationships. Or it could have been just a discussion with a watch shop as you said.
