I can confirm that, in Italian, the covid molecular test is colloquially known as "tampone (per il covid)".

Oof I did the same error in the past, the problem here is that in italian both tests like the one for covid (that you need to insert cotton inside your nose and mouth to absorb mucus) and the thing that woman insert for menstruation is called tampone (most probably because in both of the cases you insert something that absorbs from inside of your body) ending up in italians believe that it works the same way in english for the word tampon

Italian here,
One time our teacher at the cambridge course told us that ome of her male students made the same mistake. She told us the class' reaction when she told them what that really means was way worse than that. If I never heard that story, I might have fell into that same trap so I'm very glad I now know
