- This is the build for our truck bed drawers platform that we hope is easy and simple for you to make and is removable! Due to numerous requests from our popular truck tour video (linked below), we decided to make this video on how we built this awesome sleeping platform. Unfortunately, we could not build another platform just for this video, but we believe you will be able to either build it yourself or at least get some ideas for your own. When we built this 4 or 5 years ago, there weren't as many videos we could watch on how to make this, but that doesn't change the fact that people have been doing this for decades and have their own unique spins and tastes on what they want.

Maybe a series of felt pad glued to the bottom will let them slide better
Good job. One suggestion. Get some paraffin wax bars ( hdwr store) and thoroughly rub it all over the bottom of the drawers. Also inside your cabinet bottom as much as possible. Old carpenter trick. My truck drawers are plywood on plywood. Once left the tailgate down and they slid right out with all my tools :) have fun

A buddy of mine built drawers like this for his work van.he glued strips of Formica to the bottom of the drawers and the bottom of the inside of the cabinet so they would slide on each other.very slippery.worked great.👍🏻

Wow thank you! Very much appreciated. We know there’s a lot of builds out there (we’ve watched them too). Our goal was to show a simple design that anyone can build, because we definitely can’t build much else 🤣
I'm a guy that love to fabricate, build, design, and recycle/repurpose materials. There are quite a few of these truck bed builds here. Most copy each other using glides with 1" square tubing and bearings. You didn't do that here, of course, but I'm surprised that I haven't seen anyone use old glide rails from an overhead garage door. That would be simple and cheap. You could likely find the parts for free.
That’s a great idea! I used to install garage doors many years ago. People always get new rails with new door installations so yes, those are probably easy to find. To be honest, we were just going for as simple as possible. We figured we could always add on if needed.
Finally, a drawer system that is removable. Since my overlanding rig is also my daily driver, as well as a farm truck, I need to use my bed to haul normal things more times than I need to carry camp items. This helps greatly, thanks.

Great job, bed drawers are really the best wat to store your gear I have used in 50 years. Add a topper and you have a bedroom.
We have so much gear depending on our trips too. Hiking, kayaking, etc. Our attitude was leave no space unfilled lol. We have never called it a bedroom, that's a great way to describe it!
Nice and easy build. I'd probably make one drawer shorter to add some sort of counter space for my stove, food prep and table area. I'd also add hinge wear so I could prop it open to get my stuff out.
Are you camping solo? We’ve seen some interesting builds people make where they split the bed to do just that from the inside. We always used our tailgate and our little foldable table to cook given the space we take up as humans lol

A friend of mine built a similar setup a few years ago except he had 2x4s fitted into the slots on both sides of the truck bed. Each 2x4 was held in with just one pin going through the top of the platform, which allowed him to very quickly and easily remove it whenever he wasn't camping
That is ingenious! It was a little bit of a chore to remove between uses for us. I feel like the ability to travel easily (and comfortably) is the gatekeeper to having fun. It's different for everyone, but once you find that way to do it, there's nothing but open road. 😀

You can take your drawer pull off : using the same holes : and add another pull : use one hole move pull to the left adding a hole for the pull : then add new pull to the right : reusing second hole and add another hole for the new pull on right
If I’m visualizing correctly, I can see this being a much easier and stable pull. Never thought of that
I used floor based drawer rollers with ball bearings..very easy to pull out..however they were quite expensive..did a very good job
I wish we had the foresight to think of that haha. Thankfully we don’t load the drawers up too crazy, but those would make it easier!
Really cool guys! I watch a lot of different types of build out videos and its great to see the simple approach. I might just go with something really similar on the next one!
I don't think we'd have been able to make something complicated! 😂 But we do believe in simple. Last thing you want on a weekend away or a road trip is to be bogged down by the complexities of a setup. Been there done that!
SO much better than all of the overly complicated builds in overly produced videos by millenials who are overly proud of themselves. Totally works without the hours (days) of time needed for more elaborate but not much more functional setups or the need for specialty tools. We don't all have a bunch of spare time and a fully outfitted shop. Love it!

Oh wow, awesome! We are glad we could help in some way. We found that plywood is usually heavier than solid wood, but if there's two of you, it isn't that awful right? It depends on how often you remove it I guess? 😂 It'll hold up fine! Happy adventuring!

I like the reuse of materials, the simplicity of the design and the icing on the cake was the custom storage bins that can be accessed while in the sleeping mode.
That was the idea! We like to reuse anything we can and while we’re somewhat handy, we like to keep things simple and functional. Glad you enjoyed

Just additional advice, for more support on the drawers themselves, take a 4 by 4 post, cut a piece off thats the same size as the inside. Next cut the 4 by 4 diagonally in half. This will allow a lof more support for the corners. Incase you have heavy items in the drawers!
That’s a great idea. And doesn’t seem too complicated. We have definitely made it a bit heavy at times.
HMWP makes a great slide material in 1/4 inch thickness 1 1/2 inch wide on each side of the bottom

We have just decided to go full-time with our tent and this will work perfectly for us. There will be times when we will need to sleep in the truck without losing storage so thanks so much!!
Awesome! We aren’t full timers, but we learned the hard way (Key West tent fail) that versatility is not only super helpful but should be the floor, not the ceiling. Have a great time in your travels! We have a few years before we can do it

Planning is key and that last period of waiting is always tough. In 20 months - fully acclimated - you’ll have a different lilt in your voices! 😁
Just a idea I am going to try. I am going to put 4 or 5 disposable cutting board sheets on the bottom of the drawers with glue. just a little slipperier.
That’s a good idea. We had no issues sliding ours unless we made them too heavy. Which was sometimes too often 😁

Put finishing paste/wax on the drawer bottoms/top of the floors. No need for pvc, rollers, bearings, glide strips, etc.

This is a great step by step tutorial on building a truck bed. My dad used to be a Carpenter and was really good at making modern for Michah style furniture for bedrooms, kitchens and dining rooms.

Excellent DIY build! I remember looking at a tool storage system like this for my pickup a few years back and it was well over $1000! This is pretty much that! Great job explaining everything about the project!👍
Thank you! We looked at a few of those too before building this and it was just too expensive and too fancy honestly. You have to make this tailored to your own needs I think
For us, the main issue with that system (which will remain nameless! LOL), was that we couldn't easily remove it, and it was actually too tall (we wanted as much head room as possible). Also, I am hopeless treehugger and the idea of putting all that plastic in the landfill afterwards made me ill! -Greyhound

@@ggray4481 Good question. I am not good at estimating weight and of course everything feels heavier than it actually it is. Maybe 150 pounds? I'd say 100 without the drawers

I used candle wax to help with the sliding on one of my other projects. This is a good design, but I'm going to think of a way to fold/stack the whole thing near the front in order to use the bed for stuff and without needing a garage to store this.
Candle wax definitely helps! We didn’t need it for this. That’s an interesting dilemma though. I’m thinking - if I wanted something to stack due to lack of storage - maybe make two platforms, half the size and with half sized drawers? And when I need to make room I lift the back half atop the front half and push to the rear? Just brainstorming.
Bravo! I salute the bin system, since it is ultimately adjustable, unlike stationary dividers.
I have used bee's wax on drawer slides in antique furniture, just like they did "back in the day."
I'd recommend a polyurethane finish on the top of the drawer frame, and side storage.
A few people have told us about beeswax. Just curious, are you using your setup to sleep/camp, or more tool storage? We’ve never had any issues sliding it, but it seems like many do. Also thank you!

We just started our own build similar to this. We opted to keep the sides open but we like your side cubbies and may build some in the future.
Awesome! Our original build didn’t have sides, but it was also hastily thrown together. We were throwing kayak paddles etc underneath and using a crowbar to grab containers. If we were both short, we could throw a queen in this and be done, but headroom is important too. No truck build is perfect for any one or two people lol
@@MagellanandGreyhound Headroom was the most important for us which is why we chose a Leer 122. We didn't like the price or the 4 week build time but we're happy with our decision. Best of luck!

Thank you so much! It was a labor of love. And lol - I assure you the wood was not free. We have a dozen garden beds and trellises in our yard and just had this fairly substantial wood supply afterwards, so we just used that. I would not be wanting to buy wood right now!

We were surprised too! I’m thinking between not ever loading it up too insanely, a plastic bedliner, good handles, and not making the drawers too snug, we’ve never had an issue. People do all sorts of stuff, paraffin wax, gliders etc. I’m sure you’ll find what works for you. For us, we prefer simple.
@@MagellanandGreyhound I did some more research and saw that long runners cost way too much money. So this concept will do 😃 I just hope my 60l fridge (20kg)at the beginning of the drawer will not stop everything from moving smoothly! But only 1 way to find out. Thanks for the helpful vid
That’s actually the best place to put it. We always try to put heavier things up front. You have less drawer to pull out 😊. I’m sure it will work out fine.

I love the simplicity of your build. Driving off-road causes the bed of the truck to flex and twist. I want to build a raised floor like yours to hide a water tank and grey tank. Is not bolting to the truck bed the best way to prevent damage to the floor and cabinets bolted to it?
Thank you! To be honest, I don’t know the answer to your question. I know others have bolted theirs down and haven’t heard of any issues. For us, ours was tight enough but just loose enough for play that we never noticed any damage. Would love to hear/see about how you put water/gray tanks in! That sounds ambitious but wonderful of it works out

I can’t remember the brand, but we do have a truck tent extension. It’s like a tall foyer into the cap. It takes forever to setup so we only use when at a place we know we’ll be for awhile.

Great video ! I might have missed this, but did you use a stop for the drawers from sliding all the way out and falling incase we forget to stop?
Thank you! And no, we didn’t. Part of our reason why not is that as we pull the drawer out farther, it weighs down on a slight angle off the tailgate, and so it will get caught underneath the slight lip of the opening. Granted, if we really wanted to yank it out, it will! A stop wouldn’t hurt, that’s for sure, but we never had an issue.

It is - shepherdsdream.com/ - this was very expensive, be forewarned. We had to have it custom made to be slightly smaller to fit into the truck. For us though it was a good investment because when not traveling we used it in a guest bedroom in our house and later in our camper. There are many options and most stink lol. Beds aren’t comfortable, don’t quite fit right etc. we figured if we had to sleep in a truck bed, we deserved a good bed. Hope this helps!

Thank you! No, I think it’s too heavy (because of the drawers)! I suspect if we made it smaller, it could move, but it’s a pretty snug fit. Good luck with the Tacoma!
Teflon or uhmw tape on the bottom will aid in the slide.

This is cool. I have a 95 Ram w/club cab, 6.5' bed. Do you happen to know if your build would fit my truck? Also, is the box bottom required for increased stability? Trying to get a sense if I can get away without having a bottom to the box. My bed is plastic lined, so I figure sliding the drawers in and out should be no problem.
It’s a customizable build so I wouldn’t see why not. RAM bed lengths haven’t changed much over the years. It’s all about whether you feel like you have enough room lol. We built the box bottoms for the stability, yes. Our first version did not and we always felt like it was going to collapse. The big plus to not building a bottom was the build was in pieces and could be removed by one person - this build takes two people. Or the Hulk LOL.

This is by far and away the best video for bed storage I've seen and exactly how I prefer to build. There are true craftsmans out there and the following url is one of them where I'll steal his sliding mechanism, but utilize your plan. His video is: th-cam.com/video/d-BWmPaBfjQ/w-d-xo.html
And he uses 1x4 3/16inch UHMW plastic to make the drawers slide smoothly. From what he said, it's wear-resistant, low-friction, and self-lubricating. Great job and like another fellow stated, I'll be stealing this too. Thank you very much. Oh, I'll be stealing your air conditioner too. @@garyaaron8425 ugh that’s the worst. We just had our (hopefully last) snow melt recently and our cherry tree just started blossoming yesterday. Everyone gets excited about the first day of spring in March, but we don’t - too early lol.
I'm curious if this could still be done with the drawers if you used PVC pipe? I wanted to but then decided on wood because of attaching drawer slides, but if drawer slides are not needed i'm curious if it could still be done with a PVC frame, and the top plywood would cover it as well as the drawer fronts could cover the front part so you wouldn't see it. Just an idea, would love to hear your thoughts!
We haven’t done that, but I don’t see why that wouldn’t work. There were a few other comments on this video or our ones where people said they did that. I think the biggest issue for us was always weight (and keeping it simple). If things got to heavy we may have went with pipe, slides, paraffin wax under the drawers. But it works fine because of the plastic bedliner lol
Im going to go with oak slides! 6 1 1/2 thick pieces per drawer

Thanks! That was the goal. We use the truck besides camping so this was our solution. As for the 1x’s, it’s just what we had hanging around in the wood shop. Definitely made for a solid bottom to the drawers, which was needed!
Just to let you know, I tried your way at first, then, I lined the bottom of the box with hard board, wow, what difference it made, now it slide even smoother… try it …. Total cost 15.99 in Home Depot.
We’ve had a few people tell us that works great, especially if you’re opening them often.
How did you get power to the bed of the truck?
Technically speaking, no idea! 😁 Our mechanic ran a line from our main battery to the back with an automatic shutoff. We bring one of those portable battery jumps in case. Hope that helps but sorry if it didn’t
Where did you get the plastic bins that are in the drawers
A farm/farmer’s market nearby us. Not sure where you’d buy, but they are some kind of agricultural pan / fruit tray / fruit bin.

Thank you! To be honest, we don’t feel we are great at woodwork either, but comfort levels are different. My dad is a carpenter and if he lived nearby he could have built this for us in 1/100th of the time. 😂😂😂

By the tailgate - do you mean the drawers underneath? Not an actual truck tailgate right? If so, the platform should hold up no problem whatsoever. Our first iteration had no drawers, or a bottom, but we didn’t screw anything and it was rickety LOL. It was meant to be temporary.
@@MagellanandGreyhound yeah i meant does your trucks tailgate happen to hold up the drawers when pulled out? We will likely create a support leg for the drawers either way, but i was curious if that had something to do with the drawers being so sturdy when pulled out!
@@bayleyjunes oh I understand now. Yes the tailgate holds it fine. By the time the drawers reach their end, the weight of gravity will angle them up a bit and they’ll catch inside the bed platform. Unless you pull the drawers totally out, then gravity will set in LOL. If you’re pulling out of an SUV, I’d do a support leg of some kind then

It's a wool mattress from Shepherd's Dream in Oregon. Full warning - not cheap. It's our bed at home too, so we had them make a custom size one that we use in the truck cap and our truck camper.

@@larryhawes8295 no problem! Definitely prioritize comfort! That bed is just a custom version of the one in our house. Nothing like sleeping on the same bed on the road like at home!

Truck bed length and height definitely matters! That's why we got a slightly higher cap. There are so many options out there, and to be honest, it's even easier if you're going solo, because you don't need to build a full platform like we did. Thank you for watching!

Can I ask what kind of mattress topper or bed you are using?
I forget the name of the company, but it's a wool mattress. We use it both with the cap and our slide-in camper. It's the bed we have in our house as our main bed too. Super comfy, but I remember being a little pricey.

Unfortunately no, I’m sorry, we don’t have the cut list. I wish we had kept track but we made the video after it was done by many a year 🙂. We had a decent amount of the lumber sitting around too so it’s not like a receipt would help either

No, but that is flattering! Just looked him up. We watched a ton of videos about five years ago when we built this. Don’t remember which, but that’s where we got our ideas.

I’ve seen some where people do that. Usually solo builds though. It’s tough to choose space with two people and have everything perfect haha .
