  • The same question always arises, are two Gods actually the same God under a different name. Today we'll try to give you the tools to answer that question for yourself with the concepts of Epithets and Syncretism. We'll be using the two Brythonic Celtic Gods Arawn and Gwyn ap Nudd as an example to demonstrate these concepts.

I took Gwynn as the successor to Arawn for three reasons. Firstly the deal made with Pwyll would have ended a crucial cycle, and Gwynn may have been needed to restore it. The second reason is that they appear to have opposite personalities. The third is that Arawn is in the Mabinogi as the established ruler, whereas with Gwynn we get the origin of his role. All that is needed is an extra narrative to connect the two legends. In one of the novels I am working on, this is how I explain it, and it leads to some interesting opportunities for storytelling, so I prefer it over syncretism.

Some of these gods are really very similar to those coming from IFA.
