    what a treasure Mark is to find that sewing machine and restore it to working order. Those old machines are real work horses and to have all the useful attachments is such a bonus. The cardy is lovely and having matched sleeves does add elegance and balance to it.

    Pulling out threads is also a way to decorate the edges of a fabric. You pull out not just one, but several threads. And then, using embroidery thread, you can bunch several of the ones crossing the gap by stitching them together, little loops of embroidery thread creating the bunches. I have no idea what that’s called, but I remember my mother decorating the hem around a tablecloth in this manner.
    Your dress is beautiful, and so is the cardigan. Both suit you so well! It warms my heart to see you so happy.
    I needed that, after a stressful day at work and an evening sitting with her friend at the hospital, where her mother is in the process of passing away from cancer. I needed that radiant,beautiful smile of yours and I didn’t know I did until I saw it. THANK YOU!

      What you cut off the hem bottom might be usable to make tube straps.

      Pulling threads and stitching the remainders to make lace edging from the cloth is called "whitework" or "drawn thread embroidery". And it is utterly gorgeous when paired with cutwork.

    I am in awe of the way you plan out matching stripes -- sleeves to the bodice. I learned how to knit when I was 5 years old (I'm 78) and have knitted scores of sweaters, socks, hats, gloves, mittens...you name it. I once taught knitting, but apart from mastering double points, intarsia, and magic loop, I would never attempt matching stripes on a knit. You are a true artist.

    My wedding dress is made from linen and i really want to shorten the skirt to make it into a regular summer dress. I've been struggling to think how best to shorten it without cutting it wonky.... bit now you've given me that great idea of pulling out the warp thread to get a true straight line. Thanks!

    Ripping straight grain fabrics, or pulling a thread and cutting the gap, is actually the best way to make sure your fabric grain is straight! Cutting often goes across the grain and gives one a more crooked or rough looking edge.

  • @annetteavery3349
    @annetteavery3349 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

    I am so glad you explained the difference between warp and weft and why one is always easier to rip than the other. Not too many people know that and a lot of people would nerve rip down fabric but it’s the best way to get a really straight edge. Love your hand dyed, hand spun, hand knit cardigan and hand made dress, lovely and so you ❤ P.S. that sewing machine find is exquisite, love it

    Oh Jillian, you look absolutely adorable in your handspun cardi and both dresses. And the White sewing machine, I gasped when I saw it. It’s the very model I learned to sew on back in the 1960’s. And I hope yours came with the buttonhole attachment. It makes various types of buttonholes including a keyhole buttonhole! I’m so envious ♥xo

    • @JillianEve
      @JillianEve  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It didn't have the buttonhole attachment, unless I don't know what I'm looking at (possible). It does have a ruffler attachment though, and several rolled hem widths. I'm in love with it! I want to refinish the cabinet. I already recovered the chair seat and of course we did all the things to get the machine up and running- including rewiring the whole thing so it doesn't have frayed cords anymore. How cool that it's the same machine you learned on! I hope it gives you good memories. 💜

      that being said, you're giving me a heart attack on the linen treatment, but only because I just bought a b***load of linen thread to weave with. I'll be alright. Someday.

      I couldn't rip a 100% linen fabric. It would cut my hands first! Also, hand woven gets the precious treatment in my studio! Happy weaving!
