MYSTERY SOLVED!!! THANK YOU Morgan, you have solved a mystery lingering in my sewing box for YEARS. My grandmother taught me to sew and when she passed, I was given her old sewing box. She lived in Japan for many years so some things were from her time there. One is a vintage SEWING BIRD. The writing on the box is all in Japanese and the translations did not help me decode what the item was. I almost fell over when I saw you using this exact tool. Thank you for solving the mystery!!!!!! PS Sending my deepest sympathy to you after the loss of your dogs. I know the pain well, I am so glad you have your sewing to bring you comfort
I‘m so sorry for your loss of those two beautiful precious pups 🖤❤️ they seemed such gentle souls from the small cameos in your videos. I hope the beautiful memories of them will be able to outshine the sadness of their loss eventually.
This was a mystery for me as well, though I came across it for different reasons. I'm so glad Morgan explained it! I was reading an antique book about antique furniture and it casually referred to the little birds women used to help them sew when discussing sewing tables
I'm so glad to see this comment, I was going to write in if my own asking if they were used in Western history at all. I've been beginning to sew vestments in a Japanese Buddhist lineage and have a book on sewing Japanese garments as my guide which illustrated usage of a third hand and we even happen to have one in my temple's sewing collection. They're super awesome little devices and I appreciated seeing someone actually use one in modern time!
I admire you choosing to be creative and seeking joy. Grief visits us all and can feel debilitating and unending. I've found myself sinking into its bottomless depths at times this year too. "I am the evidence that you love and were loved. ~grief"
Honestly, thanks for that saying. My beloved cat likely has cancer. I found out about a month ago, though it feels like yesterday. The twisted part is that he is what saved me from the darkness, so it's like an extra kick to the gut.
Firstly, I'm so sorry for your loss, it's always difficult to lose a furry family member and losing 2 the same year must be so heartbreaking, long distance hugs to you and your family. Secondly, I love that your cat is trying so hard to be a good little sewing assistant, it's like they know you need the extra support right now.
So sorry to hear you sad news. I don't know if you've heard this before but I hope it helps..."There is a cycle of love and death that shapes the lives of those who choose to travel in the company of animals. It is a cycle unlike any other. To those who have never lived through its turnings and walked its rocky path, our willingness to give our hearts with full knowledge that they will be broken seems incomprehensible. Only we know how small a price we pay for what we receive; our grief, no matter how powerful it may be, is an insufficient measure of the joy we have been given.” ― Suzanne Clothier
when my friends and I play D&D, every time one of our cats inserts themself into the session, it's customary to say 'cat' the same way you must say 'cow' when you see one while driving. So every time yours walked into frame, I automatically said 'cat' and kept watching. Truly relatable. So sorry to hear about your pups
A short hooded cape was the first real garment I ever made and if you’re ever looking for an excuse to make even more of them I fully recommend making one in a waterproofed fabric. I used a waxed cotton and it’s such a useful garment, just covering your head and shoulders with a regular coat or jacket underneath keeps you surprisingly dry, also wearing a hood in the rain really helps with that mysterious wanderer vibe. x
Loved your little apprentice making sure that the fabric isn't sliding around (and that your posture is the most inconvenient) 😂 What I really want to know though is why there are liripipes on hoods in the first place! I can't imagine them being particularly practical in any way...
I think that they are mostly for looks, but yeah, they are handy for tying the hood more securely around your head/face, and you could always store a few coins in there.
I've just finished knitting a baby hat that has a liripipe-like extension. The instructions then tell you to put a little knot in it, but you still end up with a little beanie with a stem. With hindsight, and if I'd had the right thickness and shade of green wool I think making the hat itself in red and then doing the stem in green would be very cool, like a cherry-hat.
adding to what I wrote at Patreon now after watching the video: firstly, I had fun watching you remove the kitty off of the hood only for her to return right back and then assist with the pinning and stitching. As my husband said when I showed him: "at least she doesn't leave fur all over it." Which is in fact a huge help, I have to set my crochet down when the kitty invades, otherwise the project is embellished with fur. And secondly, my jaw literally dropped at the effect of that way of inserting the tail to the top of the hood. It looks so much better when worn, I absolutely love it!
My deepest condolences on Jean-Luc and Kathryn crossing the rainbow bridge. May they romp and play, without the aches of age, in the beautiful meadow on the other side of the rainbow bridge where they wait for you to cross into the afterlife together. There’s a wonderful poem called Dogs Never Die, They Are Sleeping In Your Heart. by Ernest Montague. It will make you cry, but it brought me a lot of comfort when I lost Oscar.
I lost my beloved cat almost exactly a year ago today; we were children together. i cant imagine losing two babies around the same time. I’m so sorry for your loss.
I saw an awesome video from a medievalist who showed how to wear the hood with a tail for both open and more closed wearing, so breezy and dry vs cold, wet, and awful weather.
In French, "little red riding hood" is called "le petit chaperon rouge." I've been confused about the "chaperon" part because that's not a word that comes up if you look up "hood" in a French dictionary. You just explained it lol. Thanks! This solves the mystery.
French person here - yeah it's an old fashioned term for specifically this kind of hood - you couldn't use it for the hood on a coat for example, it has to be a seperate garment.
This is the point where cape becomes a chapelet and then chapeau. You roll the brim up using a thick liripipe tail as the core, and roll it, and roll it, until all you have left is the crown surrounded by a sausage brim.
My condolences for losing your puppers. I lost my dog of 16 years last year. I'm loving the green fabric, always inspirational for me to try new styles.
Sad for you for your loss, I know that losing pets is real grief. 💔 I love that your sweet kitty is there to comfort you, I loved every time she popped in. 😻
There are seasons of life that are damn sure tougher than others, even just from having so many unexpected things thrown at us all at once. I so admire you leaning into working and making something indulgent and beautiful for yourself. Sending support and healing.
So very sorry for your loss. To lose two puppers in the same year is heartbreaking. I know from personal experience how rough it is. Thanks for the hood, I love the design.
Having seen what i presume is this hood out and about in the ranch-nuns video, i came back to this one and love the subtle hints to shenanigans that're present while still maintaining the hood-centric tutorial vibes!
I’ve missed these kind of Morgan videos! ❤️ So many hugs on the loss of your puppies. 💔 We lost our dear cats recently ourselves, and it was and is still indeed hard. All our hugs in your healing!
Our pup went over the rainbow bridge earlier this year so I know that sorrow intimately - he was over 15yo (big black lab) so I do not begrudge him his rest but I still miss him terribly. Your sweet pups had such a wonderful life full of adventure and love with you. Loved seeing glimpses of your curious cat - they're very interested in what you are doing! Also - really loved this hood, and I agree the diagonal attachment for the lirapipe (sp?) is most elegant. I've long wanted to make one of these hoods as they seem so cozy for a Northeastern winter.
I take my toddler and baby on walks to the park and library and winter in Wisconsin is coming up, time to make some hoods so the boys can be extra cozy in their stroller (in addition to their other winter gear obviously).
So sorry about your losses. We lost a beloved pet recently and it still hurts. Thoroughly enjoyed seeing your sewing assistant - need to see more of it!
Morgan, I am so sorry for the loss of your dogs. That is so difficult. Thank you for sharing that with us, I know it was not easy. I just wanted you to know that you are my favorite person to watch. Your presence is so calming, and I am so glad to have found your channel years ago. I look forward to your videos and this one didn't disappoint. Thank you so much.
1: The Skoldnehamn hood is somewhat easier and quicker to sew (if you are in a hurry and/or less skilled) with the gores places at the front and back, not the sides, may date from earlier that the Herjolfsness garments (1060's vs 1300's) and has no liripipe but does have a sewn crest on top and down the back a bit. If you have at least 4 ft (120cm) wide material, you can get 2 hoods from a yard (90cm-ish) of fabric. 2: A LOT of medieval clothing was lined with linen or hemp, only the poorest of the poor would have wood directly against the skin. Linen and other plant fibers almost never survive in the ground. 3: Most of the Herjolfsness garments were cut or pulled apart to be used as shrouds - what we see today is the result of a lot of work, finding and reassembling the garments from fragments. And what remains is a fraction of what was originally there, before archeologists got involved, the water front was known for numbers of skeletons wrapped in cloth just lying on the beach where they weathered out of the graveyard. Refer to 'Woven into the Earth' which came out years before 'Medieval Garments' 4: In 'modern costume talk', a 'Chaperon' is the hat that results from placing the face opening of a hood on top of your head, then wrapping the liripipe around the rest of the hood to secure it all in place. Eventually the Chaperon was made as a dedicated piece of headware and could not be used as a hood anymore.
I'm so sorry for the loss of your fur babies. But I did get excited to see their names were based on 2 of my favorite Captains: Picard & Janeway. My warrior (cattle dog) is Worf.
I was just looking at your shoemaking video... because I really like the red open hood you wear! Something similar might end up being my first medieval sewing project, honestly.
I’m sorry to hear about your loss. They really become a huge part of your life and are so missed. It’s the hardest part of having them visit our lives but they are so very worth it!! The hood is so very cute. Love it! It looks great no matter what you wear!
We're in a similar boat, it seems. 💔 My sweet soul dog, who was the same age as Jean-Luc, passed away recently at the beginning of August. I feel your pain and am so sorry that you lost both of your beloveds the same year/time. We still have 2 cats, but they are more my partner and son's, and I'm a dog lady so it's just not the same without my soul dog's dog energy in the house. I found an antique-style beveled glass locket on Etsy that I have a photo of her and some of her fur in that makes me feel close to her. I also got a necklace to hold some of her ashes, but I haven't had the guts to open the bag of her ashes yet, they're in a very beautiful box though. Sending you lots of love and I hope you are finding special ways to you to keep them close to your heart, too, during this energy transition. 💖🫂💖 Okay, now to watch the rest of the video (had to leave a comment right away!)
Both Jean-Luc and Kathryn will be amongst the most honoured creatures in Sto'vo'kor. Sending you much love ❤ (Also, yes - everyone *does* need a hood! I reenact, and my Viking Skjoldehamn hood (yes, I KNOW it's disputed) is the COMFIEST thing I own)
The hood is beautiful and yes, the diagonal cut for the lyrepipe was a great idea. It lays so beautifully! So sorry for the loss of your beloved puppers. It's never fair that our furry companions don't live as long as we do. We had to put down our oldest dog in June, and it absolutely wrecked me and my wife. And now we don't know if the second oldest will make it to the end of the year. Both are/were at least fifteen years old so they had good long lives, but it is always horrible and heart breaking having to say goodbye. Hugs to you and your family. I hope your heart mends soon.
Love your love & enthusiasm for this! As well as the result. I've only seen this style of hood recently & am curious if that tail on the hood was for aesthetic purposes only or if it gave it a function back then? Extra "pocket" to carry items due the natural lack of pockets perhaps?
Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your dogs. I can empathize with your pain. I loved this project and definitely want to make one to go with my 14th century kirtle! Your helper is adorable! I’ve always thought those “hairless” breeds look super cute in sweaters❤
I recently experienced a loss in the family too, and this video was so soothing and cheerful! I especially loved the scenes of your cat calmly sitting in the middle of everything while you worked around them. What a cutie! I shall aspire to your level of skill working around your cat.
So sorry for your loss. I lost my dog and two cats within 8 months this year and it is heartbreaking. Creating new things bring solace. I love how you matched the bright green with historic construction. Your friend will be very happy with the hood.
This is perfect timing for the fabric I accidentally bought last weekend (I obviously tripped and fell into the checkout with my card out, after queueing). Which had been designated as winter cape coat fabric, but indecisiveness about the pattern/style has been crippling me all week
Nisser! I usually do a stall for Medieval/Halloween stalls and I sell out of hoods so quickly because people try them on and then don't want to take them off. There's something primal about them. Beautiful work I'm sorry for your loss 💚
I'm so sorry for your losses. That is so difficult but two in one year is tragic. I can somewhat understand since I've had a pet pass away every year since 2020 but you put on a smiling face to continue to give your subscribers a video and that is inspiring that life does go on ❤🙏
Bear hugs with my condolences for your fur babies. It is never easy.. I am glad for your timing on the hoods as I am thinking of making one for work as it gets very cold on the back.
Super adorable, Morgan! Thank you for the calm and relaxing, enjoyable video to listen to & watch while I'm crocheting a baby blanket to donate. I'm wondering if you ever get a chance to watch The Petticoated Swashbuckler here on YT? I was watching an old Sally Pointer video (the sprang bag) and TPS was in my recommended feed. She's wonderful, and her content is right up your alley, I think! (I'm not affiliated, just a fan.) My heart goes out to you & Mr. Morgan Donner about the passings of your sweet puppers. To lose both must have been devastating. I'm so sorry. All of my love, always, and many hugs.
I'm with you girl. I also lost my Grumpy Old lady this year (Chihuahua). I actually miss how she would leave her toys all over the floor. Or how she would hide my socks in random places. Just 2 days ago I broke down in tears when i found a sock behind the nightstand.
Sorry to hear about your dogs. I lost a childhood pet of 19 years last week, and I understand it can leave you in a serious funk. Glad to see you back to making and doing small things that bring joy. 100% agree that everyone needs a hood. Probably 5 years ago, I made a "medieval viking goes mid 20th century" style hood. It's made of a soft wool blend, lined with floral poly taffeta, and has a side button closure. I constantly get complimented on it, it's extremely comfy, and part of it is getting threadbare from constant use. As a bonus, it keeps my upper half dry and warm in a rainstorm no matter what I'm wearing underneath.
So sorry to hear about your loss! Losing not only one, but two beloved fur babies must be incredible painful! Sending lots of love and hugs and all the strength you need to cope! Take care! And you, dear little fluffballs, run free! 🌈
So sorry for your loss. Our pets, whatever they are (dogs, cats lizards, horses fish ect) are all precious to us. I hope your sewing helps you through your grieving process. Love to you and your family.
Love the hood!!! So whimsical 😊 So sorry for your losses, Morgan. I hope you keep finding joy in the things you love and keep being the ray of sunshine that you are 💕
Truly sorry for your loss. I think your little "helper" is doing a fine job of helping you through it. Our babies know when we need extra cuddles or annoyance. Hugs
Awww. Please accept this e-hug if you would like it. All the best to you and Mr. Donner. Also, thank you for all these wonderful tutorials and ideas. Also Kitty there gave me no end of giggles - my first cat LOVED to be 'helpful' by diving off the couch and rumpling up my newly-smoothed fabric.
Sending a bunch of love and hugs your way. I've had pets my entire life, so I've been through my fair share of loss. It's never easy, but loving them and giving them a great life is worth it
I'm so sorry to hear about your babies, losing pets is the actual worst! We adopted a Greyhound a year and a half ago, they really are such wonderful weirdos!
I' m both happy and sad for seeing this video, losing dearest family members is the hardest thing to come through. From different reasons I was really struggling to do or finish any creative project for myself, so it's time for me to make a hood for the upcoming season. You're a real treasure Morgan ❤❤
So sorry to hear about your two sweet pups passing. I know they were beloved. May the memories be a blessing always. The hood is absolutely charming. I love it! I think you are on to something. I will be planning one for my fall crafting. I’m also loving that hair do at the end! I want to know how you did the braids with the rings. So cute!
both puppies?? god i'm so sorry morgan, they seemed sweet and i feel like they were always in one video or another loping around being beautiful and wanting love
Adding my condolences about your pups. That is a hard blow that you got hit with twice which seems most unfair. Thank you for coming back with a smile and a hood. Be well.
That hood is sticking cute! The temptation is strong lol. And your kitty trying to be the best assistant is lovely. Sending you and yours all the condolences for your loss. Virtual hugs and hot chocolate.
I read somewhere that pets are only a part of our lives, but we are all of theirs. If my cats lived to be 30 (healthily), it would not be enough time with them. My heart goes out to you and Mr. Donner. You're right. I do need a tie dye hood. I love seeing your videos pop up in my feed.
14:04 Ahh... so that's the origin of those clamps... I only knew about this design from other a rather different use... lol If your local sewing store doesn't have them, you can probably get a pair of them (they come connected with a little chain) for probably about the same price as a sewing bird in online stores that sell "toys" for grown ups. Look in the "clamps" category.
Oh my goodness, I am so sorry for your losses 😥 I have been regularly searching for your latest upload and sincerely hoped that you were/are well and this upload was taking time because it is such a big project. I feel sad that your time away has been crossed with loss and grief, sending huge hugs x I adore your hood, and yes, I have friends who wear period costume to various events and weekends. One knitted a scarf that she cleverly turned into a hood and I have recently thought about knitting something similar. The idea has been ignited once again, thank you so much lovely lady. May your memories be the joy you need right now x
My deepest condolences about your beloved puppies. Been there, done that, cried through the t-shirt. Sending hugs.

My hood gets the most use shoveling snow, as it lets the overheatedness out while still preventing freezing.

I think that they are mostly for looks, but yeah, they are handy for tying the hood more securely around your head/face, and you could always store a few coins in there.
@MorganDonner I thought that those long thin pipes that they had in the "Hobbit", would fit nicely in there !?
I've just finished knitting a baby hat that has a liripipe-like extension. The instructions then tell you to put a little knot in it, but you still end up with a little beanie with a stem.

😢So sorry for the loss of your dogs/pets/family. Lovely gift for a friend!
I'm so sorry for the loss of your fur babies. But I did get excited to see their names were based on 2 of my favorite Captains: Picard & Janeway. My warrior (cattle dog) is Worf.
Sending you hugs for your fur babies xxx❤❤
Hugs, dear, so much love on fast legs breaks your heart when they leave.
Oh honey. I'm so, so sorry for your loss. What lucky pups they were to get time in such a loving family. Sending you healing for your heart.
I was just looking at your shoemaking video... because I really like the red open hood you wear! Something similar might end up being my first medieval sewing project, honestly.
So sorry for your loss. Sending you love and thank you for your content.
Sending you much love ❤
(Also, yes - everyone *does* need a hood! I reenact, and my Viking Skjoldehamn hood (yes, I KNOW it's disputed) is the COMFIEST thing I own)
Condolences for your loss! Looks like kitty also misses them as well! Hugs!
Awesome project!
Our pets never really leave us, their prints are imbedded in our hearts forever. Hugs to you and Mr. Donner.
I’m so incredibly sorry for the loss of your dogs❤ losing two in a year is the hardest thing❤
I’m so sorry about the passing of your furry friend 😢❤ And to lose both of them in the same year is heartbreaking 😞❤️
That hood is pure joy. All the fuzzy hugs to you and Mr. Donner in memory of the best dogs ❤
I’m so sorry for the loss of your fur babies. Virtual hugs to you.
I agree everyone needs a hood.
Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your dogs. I can empathize with your pain. I loved this project and definitely want to make one to go with my 14th century kirtle! Your helper is adorable! I’ve always thought those “hairless” breeds look super cute in sweaters❤
So sorry for your and Mr Donner’s loss Morgan, Greys are such special pups with so much love to share. 💐
I recently experienced a loss in the family too, and this video was so soothing and cheerful! I especially loved the scenes of your cat calmly sitting in the middle of everything while you worked around them. What a cutie! I shall aspire to your level of skill working around your cat.
I"m so very sorry for your loss. Losing pets is always so difficult. Lots of love for you and Mr Donner. And the hood is so cute!
Beautiful work
I'm sorry for your loss 💚
I’m so sorry to hear about your pups!! That’s always the worst part but I’m sure they were surrounded by lots of love! Sending you big virtual hugs!!
I'm so sorry for your losses. That is so difficult but two in one year is tragic. I can somewhat understand since I've had a pet pass away every year since 2020 but you put on a smiling face to continue to give your subscribers a video and that is inspiring that life does go on ❤🙏
I'm so very sorry for your loss. Our cat passed away this summer, so I know the pain. Best of wishes to you.
Deepest condolences to you and your husband in the loss of your beautiful pups.
That diagonally cut liripipe is just the mostest elegant!
I love how your kitty sat inside your embrace while you sewed! (And just how curious they were of your whole process, so cute!)
My deepest condolences on the loss of your sweet doggos. Pets are family and it's always so hard to say goodbye. Take care.
I love your hairstyle btw! The braided look is so creative but also adorable!
I'm so very sorry for your loss. It's so hard to lose a fur friend, and I send you many healing wishes to help you through this difficult time.
So sorry for your loss. Our pets, whatever they are (dogs, cats lizards, horses fish ect) are all precious to us. I hope your sewing helps you through your grieving process. Love to you and your family.
Love the hood!!! So whimsical 😊
So sorry for your losses, Morgan. I hope you keep finding joy in the things you love and keep being the ray of sunshine that you are 💕
Truly sorry for your loss. I think your little "helper" is doing a fine job of helping you through it. Our babies know when we need extra cuddles or annoyance. Hugs
So sorry for the loss of your pups! I recently lost my cat Mandy, and it’s been so painful. Wishing you healing and comfort ❤
18:58 my 1yr old cat Minnie is like this when im working on sewing projects. Impossible for pattern cutting on the floor. 😂
Sending a bunch of love and hugs your way. I've had pets my entire life, so I've been through my fair share of loss. It's never easy, but loving them and giving them a great life is worth it
Idk how else to describe it beyond you have a sort of Alton Brown "good eats" vibe going on- its really refreshing I love it
I'm so sorry to hear about your babies, losing pets is the actual worst! We adopted a Greyhound a year and a half ago, they really are such wonderful weirdos!
I'm so sorry about your loss of your dear pups. My heart goes out to you.
I' m both happy and sad for seeing this video, losing dearest family members is the hardest thing to come through.
From different reasons I was really struggling to do or finish any creative project for myself, so it's time for me to make a hood for the upcoming season. You're a real treasure Morgan ❤❤
I am saddened to hear that your sweet pups have passed. 😢
I pray that you will find peace and even joy in their memory! 🐾🐾
I am sorry for your loss. I do love your videos and your hard work. The best to you.
I only knew about this design from other a rather different use... lol
If your local sewing store doesn't have them, you can probably get a pair of them (they come connected with a little chain) for probably about the same price as a sewing bird in online stores that sell "toys" for grown ups. Look in the "clamps" category.
I'm so sorry for your loss :( bless you for getting back up and still choosing to create! And for kitty helper
