- These haunting images of New York in the 1970s reveal the dark side of a city on the brink of economic and social collapse.
Then the city was swept by a wave of racial unrest, gang wars, strikes and protests demanding affordable housing, garbage collection, and improved conditions in poor areas. The middle class was leaving en masse for the suburbs. In the 1970s, New York became the crime capital of the United States.
From 1969 to 1974, the city lost more than 500,000 manufacturing jobs. By 1975, more than a million families depended on Social Security.
