Agree. When i play temporary other games i was kind kinda disapointed that they made protagonists so flat. Doctor have reason on begining... Coma, but unlike other games, Darknights Memoir, Virgilo and Main Story reveals that he have more personality than Every Gatcha Protagonist combined
Arknights not having all its character fall in love with you on the get-go is so refreshing. For a time i thought i was missing something, but i soon realized it was just the game, and I began to delve into the characters. I actively went searching for potential "love interests" like Angelia and Gravel, just to learn WHY they might be that way. My greatest fear of the anime is it will not relfect the characters we have come to love and ONLY focus on the main story.
I don't exactly have high hopes for the anime despite how good the game is. Sometimes "translating"/transferring one media to another just doesn't work. Of course, will still go out and check it and hope it turns out decent.

Yes those episodes were the weakest of the bunch, but the adaptation means that they can change it up so it's more interesting or at the very least give us more stuff that could hook us for more, they're also not limited by the vn style, so they can use visual storytelling alongside the dialogue. However, I would hope we get the later episodes at a not-so-distant date since they are better. I also would really like to see events as OVAs. If they do make event-OVAs, I wonder if they would do it by release date order or some sort of chronological order. I also hope that they reserve Kal'tsit's long monologues for times when they can hype up what's going to happen next.
This makes a lot of sense, take Angelina’s case for example, her romantic interest towards you isn’t based on your personality, looks or anythijg for that matters but because she is indebted to you for saving her.. (As the leader of Rhodes) Platinum stick around Rhodes because she finds you interesting. Blue Poison likes having you around, one of the few who doesn’t mind being around her. About Gravel, I have few ideas 1. Since the Doktor is quite an important person in the lore, there's a chance that Gravel would know about them beforehand and develop some sort of celebrity crush (but I'm still at the beginning of the story so I might have mistaken something) 2. She was actually tasked with assassinating Dokutah but developed feelings for them instead (Fidel Castro casus) 3. Love is blind. Gravel could just fall for Doktor unconditionally. Since she would be the only operator to be like that, I find it plausible. We have dozens of characters with professional relations with you, why couldn't there be one aiming for more?

I was kinda bumped out that aside from a very obvious few who "thirst" for your love, most operators kinda don't care much what you think of them, even if you max out their trust. But I kinda like it more over time. They share their thoughts and feelings with you. Just like you said, they begin to trust you more and more, and in an apocalyptic setting as such, it's kinda fitting . Will still thirst for my fav ones, but I like them more because of who they are rather than how crazy they are in love with u.
the fact that the relationship meter is not bond but trust is already great, like they're your coworkers, sometimes even if they trust you that doesn't mean they care much about whatever trivial things about you

I prefer to divide Arknights on two parts - “canon” and “fanon”. While “canon” provides me with good story, interesting characters and breathtaking lore that I can enjoy, “fanon” gives me anything that I personally love even though it hardly can become real. Like, let’s be honest, practically everybody have certain favorite characters that can be considered as either husband or wife, and I’m not an exception (should I really feel sorry for falling into this gorgeous radiant horsegirl whose name is Margaret Nearl?..). The thing is that you should just understand what is canon and not, which is the problem of lots of fandoms (look at genshin comunity, people there are devouring each other because of their own interests, do we really want this? Hell no…). Arknights gives you a serious story but it doesn’t restrict you enjoying what you want to. So, can’t see a problem liking the original source material and developing own fanon unless you understands that it would never become canon

I like the original story as it is, such additions indeed would be horrible, unless they would be added perfectly enough to not ruin the story (examples are above, unlucky Kevin who is actually a friend of Ethan, and Red Avenger having some time to shine in the recent CN event)
Honestly, the fact that all the characters have actual personalities and their personalities are not just a trope makes the game’s story more strong and believable, I’ve stopped playing a lot of gacha games for this same reason, the characters are not written as believable people, while some are but the majority is just based on tropes or their whole “personality” is the trope. I’ve said this before, the things the characters do are actually consistent with their personalities and they don’t go out of character just to love you, for example, it’d be weird if characters like kal’tsit had a marriage mechanic, it would go waaaay too out of character, having you marry everyone makes the story lose a lot of points so it’s just straight up better to make you marry no one.
The main "personality trait" of each character in gacha games is that they love you beyond reason. This is the main reason I gave up on Priccone after 2 days. It's not immersional nor relatable in slightest to be the only love intrest of each female.
@@kiszkjmt8564 yeah like wtf, I also don’t like that most gacha games don’t take themselves seriously, I gave up on azure lane, priconne, and Blue archive because they don’t take their story’s seriously most of the time, they can and they sometimes do, and when they do it feels awesome but it’s still not enough to keep me playing, the one i had experience the most was azur lane and man, it’s such a let down sometimes. The only 2 gachas that have managed to keep me playing are GFL and arknights but I stopped playing GFL not too long ago because I finished almost all the story and ended up getting bored. So far arknights has one of the best stories and the best gameplay, that has no discussion because almost all the other gachas have crappy gameplay lmao.
The contrast is just what makes it for me. Nothing like seeing some of them suffer like they were meant to be. Refreshing, like a soft spring evening breeze.
I love the character design and development of Arknights, in a depressing, cruel world like Terra, having a harem is immersion breaking, but I really fond of the idea of having more close interactions with different operators, like a... I agree completely. The game's seriousness is one of the main reason i love this. The only other gacha game that managed to make the PC not a harem master was alchemy stars. The affinity system is pretty clear, you'll at most get to befriend them, and that's all. However, it doesn't stop you from learning more about them in general

So far I wouldn't say Kaltsit behaviour towards Doctor is justified. Based from all the informations available so far, Doctor was a simple person dedicated to their oripathy research before they got forced by circumstance to be a ruthless commander. Kaltsit hostility against the Doctor (so far) made her look like a petty person who was upset that Doctor turned themselves into a war machine in the process and bloodied their hands too much to achieve their victories.
I think I love the way Hypergryph has done it for the same reason that I like Dark Souls' world. It's a setting that feels like it exists regardless of the main character. The world feels so much bigger than just what the Doctor experiences, and the characters have more depth than just their interactions with the Doctor. I think it makes their trust in the Doctor feel more personal. In FGO, almost everyone falls in love with Master-kun as a given, then the reason is almost always because of master's kindness-- and its nice that my waifu loves me back, but in Arknights, Zima respects your authority as the boss and for giving the Ursus girls a chance at a new life, Thorns trusts in your ability to command and lead in combat, and to Frostleaf, you're someone she can share her music tastes with. Something like that.
This leaning towards seriousness is one big reason the story grew onto me. I mean yeah, who would even trust a goddamn warlord with a penchant for sacrificing pawns for their sake, and who had "amnesia"? Unless they know the person little by little everytime they interact, they will never understand how a certain character works. This, and the way of building trust is just apt and realistic. Really takes long to do so, and worth it.
One thing I always hated from gacha games are the self insert MCs, it became pretty boring fast and if the Game is from a long running franchise kind of ruin most of the characters of the franchise for the sake of the self-insert fantasy. (Looking at You FGO) One of the reason why i love arknights, is because doctor is his own character and the operators has their own lifes and problems but they don't need the doctor all the time to face their own problems like every self-insert character have to do because other characters can't have life without them

I like the way characters are written in arknights, personally i never liked harem anime and that kind of stuff because they make the characters withing the story look one dementional. They dont feel like real people but more like puppets. Thats why i like arknights because the characters have their own interests, their own worries, their own personalities.

And then the VA resumes speaking, responding to whatever the dokutah "didn't say". These situations are almost always blatantly flirtatious. Such as BP's "oh, was that a compliment ?" One of the gacha games that you can include is touhou lostword. it has a trust meter as well but potrait as a heart system. And hell if you over use a friend in there their heart/affinity will go fucking negative a dark purple heart saying "So-so you know ****, But that's about it" And hell they have decreased overall stats as well xD. And yeah I love this game because everyone might hate me, just care for me and many more. I love it! It's not those gacha games that everyone will fall in love in you or some sort it's so hecking solid. And an example? Schwarz, she is just your bodyguard not someone to chat for 10 hours or so like Ceylon. Sometimes like the executor being a 7 Star Bodyguard. It's so chilling, we have murderers, people who have PTSD's, Even our own enemies are with us. This game is such godlike
While I do feel that the Operator roster contains a few more "maybes" and "yeses" than you're giving it credit for -- it sure reads to me like Plume has a crush on the Doctor, for example, though she might not actually realize it -- I definitely like that the characters in this game have personalities and motivations that don't revolve around trying to get into the player-insert MC's pants. It helps sell the illusion that Rhodes Island is a functional organization with workplace relationships that don't involve everyone trying to date their supervisor for no particularly good reason.
I don't think just taking out something as ridiculous as a harem simulation feature makes Arknights more realistic. Really, I wouldn't call it all that 'realistic'. It's not some slice of life or an autobiography of a person's week. I do think that a focus more on the events which constitute the narrative instead of mechanics created to entice people does give the writers more freedom to make the story more enjoyable than it would be without, since damn near no one is, in their heart, interested in making a harem simulator interesting. in regards to the Arknights story, I find it's at it best when it doesn't have to deal with elements related to the main plot. Specifically, information and foreknowledge we as the audience don't have but the story seemingly works off of. Chapter 1 suffered because the authors simply didn't have control and played it safe. They weren't capable at the time of informing and then entertaining in order to make chapter 1 or 0 entertaining to a fresh audience, so they just meandered a bit and put out what's honestly a basic anime opening episode. Explosions, instant action, and sprinkles of lore dusted around it. Basic, but enough. Chapters 2 & 3 were garbage fires because the authors took off the kiddie gloves but still didn't have anything. It was like reading the rough draft of an essay. The ideas were all there but they were worse than unpolished; they were covered in the same dirt they were pulled out of and sloppily thrown onto the page. chapter's 4 and onward really picked up because the authors actually started to polish the same ideas off and get into their grove. A lot of that was, returning to my same old point, it didn't feel like I was missing a lot of info and a general sense of direction, or 'information and foreknowledge' that the authors had and I didn't.

Which is why events that don't or can't rely on pre-established info, like Dossoloes holiday and Twilight of Wolumonde, were so great because the authors also got to focus more on the story. What was actually happening at the time, than simply making the plot a slave to the save the world plot.
I get what you're trying to say, but it feels like you're just condemning anyone who actually likes the Doctor romantically as shallow people while those who don't are automatically perceived and well-written(even though most of them are pretty bland and one-note even with their own variant of tragic story).
The characters are written so well that you can sympathize with them to the point that you want to go to terra just to help and cheer them up, nothing more nothing less.

I´ve been playing Arknights since November and I like that not all the characters fall in the harem category, cuz yeah we can see their selfs as individuals, but I must say that if we have some kind of "friendship" or some kind of "emotional" event from time to time, can be a breake of some heavy dark moments in the game, so much depression and sadness.... I mean I like the seriousnes of the game, the scars of the war showed in the game but I cannot be the only one that want to see your favorite operator in a relax time with you or interacting with other people to know them even better or, know what they think about previous events, hopes and dreams? or even what happens inside Rhodes Island. The event of Gavial felt more like a vacation to me than Dossoles, and we could see the operator more like in a "normal day" of our world and I liked that. But that wont stop me for loving Utage and the ops who answeder to my call at the gacha
I love the fact that Doctor is not written as a pure self-insertion. I love the realistically diverse spectrum of emotions and personalities from all the Operators too.
I'd like a in between for realistic and Harem. Like a system where you can only marry one operator and can only have a harem with the people they're ok with. (Example: Shining and Followers, Che'en and her girl squad, Chiave and gang, etc etc) should you cheat on them, their entire progress will be set to 0. As well as leveling and skills. Just to make the players suffer for being selfish and greedy. The system to romance can be a sorta choice style side story. Where various randomized choices are there for you and as the trust increases, the more the both of them fall in love with each other. Putting in that realistic effort for that harem esque love. Totally not saying this because I'm head over heels for Shining. Definitely not
Relationships in AK are writen more realisticly. But you have much more maybe and flirting in textlines that you mske it. In you valentine special you miss obvious one. Whislash is desperate old maid that remind you that she is free. Pluma is writen as tipical younger girl that go for older guy. Dusk is more maybe than no, given how she hangout with only you. But given how crazy Nian family is, who knows. Plus Skalter give clear picture that Skadi is possible, but this is bad end.

Of course I loved AK even after 2 years because of their realistic characterizations Silverash first saw RI as just another way to expand his business, but eventually looking forward to fight one on one against Doctor Or Ch'en who doesn't even trust RI but then not only joined but also fully trusts them after she left her home behind Even lower star operators have their own goals and reasons for joining RI, they're not just a bunch of disposable mercenaries waiting to be deployed but they all have their own activities inside or outside RI's landship AK stories might be hard for me to follow sometimes, but so many of them are really interesting that sometimes could even change my perception of the operators completely
Realistic always bring us to that "relatable" condition. Being able to relate to something make us can empathize for something in that particular thing. That's why i prefer more reaistic than just merely living in the dream
Arknights knows how and when to take itself seriously, there are lighthearted moments but the setting and story is no happy-go-lucky ride. And as Blaze says: "Trust is not letting your guard down, is knowing what the other is going or not going to do".
I might be different from other people but I never play gacha games that makes mc a self-insert (expect azur lane bcs of how good the devs are).I want the mc to have a distinct personalily and own unique values that will make him do his own decisions and not mine.So doctoh being Not self inert is good for me and I want to stay it that way. Also, regarding love interest.I don't mind doctor having canon pairing but I want it to be BELIEVABLE.Just don't throw me 200% trust line info dump or some shit.Give me actual event,and actual mutual development and THEN actual confession or strong implyment from BOTH sides of the pairing.That's part of the reason why I only accept(currently) kalsit, priestess and closure as a potential love interest.
3:25 This is also one of my favorite things about Arknights. I guess one of the main reasons lies in the developer. Many japanese gachas exploit the harem protagonist trope too much, so it's very refreshing seeing a team like HG doing things in a more serious tone and with more of an international player base in mind (Yes, I know HG and Arknights are chinese, CN has been making really good stuff lately).
You know personally I would've preferred it if AK was a harem simulatio- nah I'm just fucking with you, this aspect of AK is probably one of the most refreshing approaches a Gacha game takes with this sort of thing. I'd be downright infuriated if they changed it.
To answer the question "realistic characters, or harem simulation", I say you can aim for both as long as the setting makes sense. Take Azur Lane for example. On the surface, it may seem like mindless fanservice, but if you look into the lore you can actually see a pretty intense story setting. Humanity's besieged by this cosmic threat and their only hope is a similar breed of "monster", but because of all the similarities humanity fears them and won't hesitate to dispose of them once the fighting stops. Not only does this give the shipgirls a raw deal, it also kinda justifies why they all fall for Shikikan. He's the only one to treat them as real people. Not only does this create human emotions in them, but if he treats them well, it also encourages them to hold onto them, bringing them closer to thinking of themselves as people instead of weapons. But yeah, in the case of Arknights, such an approach wouldn't work nearly as well.
To add onto that, Azur Lane also have different worlds to tell its story. There's the one where the factions are actively fighting to save the world, where the main story takes place, and the one where everything is peaceful where the fun/parody events, I would also include oathing, take place.

Albeit I am still more inclined to think they are 2 separate worlds/timelines since we know there are multiple timelines/worlds in Azur Lane, especially since many of the meme/parody events that happen just would not make sense in the scenario you mentioned

In my opinion. I believe grounded lore is much better. I'd like the feeling of being able to relate to the story and also realistic characters. As a writer myself, Arknights has been my inspiration when it comes to writing. Arknights is just too compelling and the world building is so good. The characters themselves feels like actual characters and the issues inflicted upon the world of Arknights are relevant and affects one faction or another. That's why even though the grind is a chore. I still kept playing to keep myself updated with the lore.
I think Roberta might be the strongest contender so far when she comes out depending on how they translate some of her story and lines. She is pretty openly affectionate towards the Doctor in several lines and her 150 affection archive reveals that she's been thinking about us this way for a while. Even compared to Gravel, I think Roberta might be the one most into the Doctor.
I hate harem and i definitely like how Arknight just make each operator as a real person with problem that they need to take care off. But actually, on the other side, how Arknight develop a character, tell us their profile, and also add so many things that really describe their life is a good thing that allow us to create our own story with that character. This allow us very easily to create a non Canon story with that operator and still contains the true nature of that operator via our knowledge of their life in the profile and their problem in the game. I think this quite a smartmove Actually. They allow us to understand the Character so much to the point that we can create our own story using a conflict surrounding them and give our viewpoint about that conflict. Also it gives us very very good chance to learn just through their profiles, heck even my friend sometimes create a non Canon story with his favourite operator and even know how his favorite one gonna respond. He even now understand more about the feeling of being around a big problem that another people face.( Simply his story is just him being an operator in Rhodes island working as a teacher for the infected kids in there and also take a research about the thing that happened to a child like ifrit case. he even give a viewpoint about the case and well even if there is not really romantic, because his favourite operator is Follinic, he can really look after many thing in her profile and make a good partner (romantic but i don't know why when i read it, it feels like iam reading a thesis of a research than a conversation 🤣)
Now, another word from another subscriber. I went into Arknights for lore and worldbuilding, not for waifu/husbando reasons. And my first event was Operational Intelligence. There, I met Patriot and W. And then we got Darknights Memouirs. As well as W. I can't call her a waifu, but that dynamic between her and the Doctor. She is a call from the past, making us remember who we were. And with trust I hope she can one time actually forgive. Forget that hatred, accept the pain, and live on.
As a person you plays Azur Lane, there are 5 girls that are extremely (not even death do you apart will save you) into the commander, some are tsunderes, homies that question why pick them as your wife, sister figures that are happy to be your wife, aunts that would help you even without the ring and one mother that loves and cares for you that is shock that you will marry her when she already declared herself your mom. Marriage can be weird in games with it as a mechanic.
I do understand that in reality, the doktah will never get the waifu's or hasbandos but it's still fun to daydream sometimes hahaha but if Carnelian oneechan drags the dokutah to her hometown for whatever the reason... who am I to complain? Fun vid nevertheless
I disagree about the "seriousness" argument affinity system in PGR ends at "love" and it doesn't take away any seriousness of the world imo. And if you need a "romance" with an operator to be serious and shit then 1 account = you get to choose only 1 op and Doc doesn't become a harem protag.

I feel like arknights already has enough Characters that actually are interested on the Dokutah, and to exemplify that we have Blaze who has the best big sister energy i ever saw i would be real disappointed if out of nowhere this brotherly relationship she shows in game suddenly turned into romantic interest. The Dokutah may be too focused on (over)working but that will never stop us to shipp everyone they see. The player is just a parasite that the Dokutah has to deal with XD
This is what makes Arknights unique compared to other gacha games I played (I am looking at you Azur Lane). The fact that all of their characters have their own unique personalities and sticks to them with no oath/marriage system existing fits the serious tone that the game has. In a real situation you wouldn't be actively searching for a love interest when you have a literal company that is working on a cure for a worldwide disease and fighting against terrorists now would you? That is what I like about Arknights at times, they do not sacrifice or cut any corners when it comes to their story or add in an oath mechanic just so they can get some extra cash like most companies probably would. They stick to their morals and focus purely on how to make Arknights a good game. Kal'tsit may not be our actual ex-wife but the thought of it does make me chuckle a bit even as a joke for us dokutahs.
Some of the operators do show that they're interested in you, but doesn't openly express it. Which is realistic considering that they're working as colleagues and can't put their work before their feelings, especially in the world of Terra.
It's funny how harem simulator games also tend to destroy the personality of the character and their relationship with the player anyway. Marriage is supposed to symbolize how special your relationship is with the character, but you can just do it with every single character, and so they all stop being special. And it makes no sense for yandere characters to be okay with it! Akagi in Lore: "Please don't look at other girls! Please only love me. It would break my heart if you cheated!" Akagi in Game: "Welcome home, Shikikan! I see you married your 58th shipgirl! Congratulations!"
I really do like that Arknights when compared to other Gachas is much more realistic and darker with it's tone. Like with other games that try to be like this, like FGO with the lostbelts, trying to give the player a sense of dread and question their morality as they supposedly genocide multple worlds, is quickly dashed aside as there are jokes, many girls wanting to get with the master, and the monthly event in where the player could get a brand new swimsuit Servant. But Arknights, it never makes itself a joke, the world is pretty much a barren wasteland, with the only sources of safety are behemoth sized moving cities. People die when things go wrong, several of your operators are either suffering from depression, mental illness, and/or just not in the mood to party. And you, the player, or rather, The Doctor. Canonically is rutheless in the past, being a cold-hearted commander feared by all who knew him EDIT: Though I wouldn't mind that more of the operators do develop more romantic feelings, or at the very least are much more closer and intimate with the Doctor, like a close friend/best bud. But it shouldn't be to the point where they blatantly love him
It's a like Arknights creators want to have a cake and eat a cake. "Not a harem game" - but majority of characters are quite hot anime girls, in shorts, miniskirts etc. If game was supouse to be realistic charactees should differ more in age (or at least appeqrance if life span is shorter for "plot reasons"), male:female ratio should be a lot closer to 50:50, and uniforms/armor of female characters should be less revealing. Game appear like a harem game, but just decided to not implement romance mechanics (and so not monetize it). Realistical romance would be to complitacted to implement it in game - but I think that some romance option for single operator to unlock few lines without any in-game bonus (so nobody would oath multiple characters for skins and meta reasons like I did in Azur Lane) wouldn't be that bad.
I like the realism especially how each of the units don’t have their own identical 3 star, 4 star, 5 star, and 6 stars versions of themselves, they all remain the same unless they have skins. It gives off a satisfying feeling that you’re actually collecting different characters and you can invest in all of them. Love this game.
The realistic characters thing is definitely how it should be; Arknights shouldn't change that. ....But that's not gonna stop me headcannoning my Dokutah being in constant gei panic mode thanks to the bloodborne fish people.
Basically. Yostar hasn't given up on World building, someone joining as an Operator doesn't mean they're gonna be involved with you. They might have interactions with the Doctor but most of them have their own purpose for joining Rhodes Island.
There is one character that does reveal her body to you when she trusts you, but best girl Mudrock aside, yes, I too prefer an actual story over a horni PNG waifu collection, I´ve been watching the Girl´s frontline anime and the designs of most of the characters are baffling, clearly more centered on appeal than sense, which is distracting from the dead serious tone the show goes for.

I love the realistic and hopeless feel arknights give which makes it really stand out compared to other gacha games imo Arknights is a real gem although I wouldn't mind if we got a one off Valentine's event with a new meme operator
this is kinda the reason why I've come to stick with Arknights. Sure a lot of people might like Eunectes for some very soft looking thighs. But I moreso want to help her understand how we do things outside of the jungle. That is just one operator example of course, but it also somewhat highlights why I don't care about Ash as an operator, sure she's great to have on the team but.. She just doesn't fit or add anything to the world, So I'd most likely much rather get to know someone like Platinum, BP, provence and so on, hell, I'm weirdly interested in learning more about Aosta even though most people seem to forget that he exists.

Agree. When i play temporary other games i was kind kinda disapointed that they made protagonists so flat. Doctor have reason on begining... Coma, but unlike other games, Darknights Memoir, Virgilo and Main Story reveals that he have more personality than Every Gatcha Protagonist combined
Arknights not having all its character fall in love with you on the get-go is so refreshing. For a time i thought i was missing something, but i soon realized it was just the game, and I began to delve into the characters. I actively went searching for potential "love interests" like Angelia and Gravel, just to learn WHY they might be that way. My greatest fear of the anime is it will not relfect the characters we have come to love and ONLY focus on the main story.
I've already accepted that AK season 1 will be a flop and only the sequels and OVAs will carry the series.

Yes those episodes were the weakest of the bunch, but the adaptation means that they can change it up so it's more interesting or at the very least give us more stuff that could hook us for more, they're also not limited by the vn style, so they can use visual storytelling alongside the dialogue.
However, I would hope we get the later episodes at a not-so-distant date since they are better. I also would really like to see events as OVAs. If they do make event-OVAs, I wonder if they would do it by release date order or some sort of chronological order.
I also hope that they reserve Kal'tsit's long monologues for times when they can hype up what's going to happen next.

About Gravel, I have few ideas
1. Since the Doktor is quite an important person in the lore, there's a chance that Gravel would know about them beforehand and develop some sort of celebrity crush (but I'm still at the beginning of the story so I might have mistaken something)
2. She was actually tasked with assassinating Dokutah but developed feelings for them instead (Fidel Castro casus)
3. Love is blind. Gravel could just fall for Doktor unconditionally. Since she would be the only operator to be like that, I find it plausible. We have dozens of characters with professional relations with you, why couldn't there be one aiming for more?

Arknights character: I hate you.
Doctor: I understand, but let's keep a professional relationship here.
I was kinda bumped out that aside from a very obvious few who "thirst" for your love, most operators kinda don't care much what you think of them, even if you max out their trust. But I kinda like it more over time. They share their thoughts and feelings with you. Just like you said, they begin to trust you more and more, and in an apocalyptic setting as such, it's kinda fitting .
Will still thirst for my fav ones, but I like them more because of who they are rather than how crazy they are in love with u.
the fact that the relationship meter is not bond but trust is already great, like they're your coworkers, sometimes even if they trust you that doesn't mean they care much about whatever trivial things about you

I prefer to divide Arknights on two parts - “canon” and “fanon”. While “canon” provides me with good story, interesting characters and breathtaking lore that I can enjoy, “fanon” gives me anything that I personally love even though it hardly can become real. Like, let’s be honest, practically everybody have certain favorite characters that can be considered as either husband or wife, and I’m not an exception (should I really feel sorry for falling into this gorgeous radiant horsegirl whose name is Margaret Nearl?..). The thing is that you should just understand what is canon and not, which is the problem of lots of fandoms (look at genshin comunity, people there are devouring each other because of their own interests, do we really want this? Hell no…). Arknights gives you a serious story but it doesn’t restrict you enjoying what you want to. So, can’t see a problem liking the original source material and developing own fanon unless you understands that it would never become canon

I like the original story as it is, such additions indeed would be horrible, unless they would be added perfectly enough to not ruin the story (examples are above, unlucky Kevin who is actually a friend of Ethan, and Red Avenger having some time to shine in the recent CN event)
Honestly, the fact that all the characters have actual personalities and their personalities are not just a trope makes the game’s story more strong and believable, I’ve stopped playing a lot of gacha games for this same reason, the characters are not written as believable people, while some are but the majority is just based on tropes or their whole “personality” is the trope.
I’ve said this before, the things the characters do are actually consistent with their personalities and they don’t go out of character just to love you, for example, it’d be weird if characters like kal’tsit had a marriage mechanic, it would go waaaay too out of character, having you marry everyone makes the story lose a lot of points so it’s just straight up better to make you marry no one.
The main "personality trait" of each character in gacha games is that they love you beyond reason. This is the main reason I gave up on Priccone after 2 days. It's not immersional nor relatable in slightest to be the only love intrest of each female.

The only 2 gachas that have managed to keep me playing are GFL and arknights but I stopped playing GFL not too long ago because I finished almost all the story and ended up getting bored.
So far arknights has one of the best stories and the best gameplay, that has no discussion because almost all the other gachas have crappy gameplay lmao.

I love the character design and development of Arknights, in a depressing, cruel world like Terra, having a harem is immersion breaking, but I really fond of the idea of having more close interactions with different operators, like a... Personal story with him/her. Become best pals, friends, *maybe* in relationship even.
I agree completely. The game's seriousness is one of the main reason i love this. The only other gacha game that managed to make the PC not a harem master was alchemy stars. The affinity system is pretty clear, you'll at most get to befriend them, and that's all. However, it doesn't stop you from learning more about them in general

So far I wouldn't say Kaltsit behaviour towards Doctor is justified. Based from all the informations available so far, Doctor was a simple person dedicated to their oripathy research before they got forced by circumstance to be a ruthless commander. Kaltsit hostility against the Doctor (so far) made her look like a petty person who was upset that Doctor turned themselves into a war machine in the process and bloodied their hands too much to achieve their victories.
I think I love the way Hypergryph has done it for the same reason that I like Dark Souls' world. It's a setting that feels like it exists regardless of the main character. The world feels so much bigger than just what the Doctor experiences, and the characters have more depth than just their interactions with the Doctor. I think it makes their trust in the Doctor feel more personal.
In FGO, almost everyone falls in love with Master-kun as a given, then the reason is almost always because of master's kindness-- and its nice that my waifu loves me back, but in Arknights, Zima respects your authority as the boss and for giving the Ursus girls a chance at a new life, Thorns trusts in your ability to command and lead in combat, and to Frostleaf, you're someone she can share her music tastes with. Something like that.
Even if my waifus doesn't love me, that doesn't stop _me_ from loving _them_ with all my heart, especially Kal'tsit and Surtr

This leaning towards seriousness is one big reason the story grew onto me. I mean yeah, who would even trust a goddamn warlord with a penchant for sacrificing pawns for their sake, and who had "amnesia"? Unless they know the person little by little everytime they interact, they will never understand how a certain character works.
This, and the way of building trust is just apt and realistic. Really takes long to do so, and worth it.
One thing I always hated from gacha games are the self insert MCs, it became pretty boring fast and if the Game is from a long running franchise kind of ruin most of the characters of the franchise for the sake of the self-insert fantasy. (Looking at You FGO)
One of the reason why i love arknights, is because doctor is his own character and the operators has their own lifes and problems but they don't need the doctor all the time to face their own problems like every self-insert character have to do because other characters can't have life without them

I like the way characters are written in arknights, personally i never liked harem anime and that kind of stuff because they make the characters withing the story look one dementional. They dont feel like real people but more like puppets. Thats why i like arknights because the characters have their own interests, their own worries, their own personalities.
You can't have 2 harem protag in a game and we already have Texas for that role.

One of the gacha games that you can include is touhou lostword. it has a trust meter as well but potrait as a heart system. And hell if you over use a friend in there their heart/affinity will go fucking negative a dark purple heart saying "So-so you know ****, But that's about it" And hell they have decreased overall stats as well xD. And yeah I love this game because everyone might hate me, just care for me and many more. I love it! It's not those gacha games that everyone will fall in love in you or some sort it's so hecking solid. And an example? Schwarz, she is just your bodyguard not someone to chat for 10 hours or so like Ceylon. Sometimes like the executor being a 7 Star Bodyguard. It's so chilling, we have murderers, people who have PTSD's, Even our own enemies are with us. This game is such godlike
While I do feel that the Operator roster contains a few more "maybes" and "yeses" than you're giving it credit for -- it sure reads to me like Plume has a crush on the Doctor, for example, though she might not actually realize it -- I definitely like that the characters in this game have personalities and motivations that don't revolve around trying to get into the player-insert MC's pants. It helps sell the illusion that Rhodes Island is a functional organization with workplace relationships that don't involve everyone trying to date their supervisor for no particularly good reason.

I don't think just taking out something as ridiculous as a harem simulation feature makes Arknights more realistic. Really, I wouldn't call it all that 'realistic'. It's not some slice of life or an autobiography of a person's week. I do think that a focus more on the events which constitute the narrative instead of mechanics created to entice people does give the writers more freedom to make the story more enjoyable than it would be without, since damn near no one is, in their heart, interested in making a harem simulator interesting.
in regards to the Arknights story, I find it's at it best when it doesn't have to deal with elements related to the main plot. Specifically, information and foreknowledge we as the audience don't have but the story seemingly works off of. Chapter 1 suffered because the authors simply didn't have control and played it safe. They weren't capable at the time of informing and then entertaining in order to make chapter 1 or 0 entertaining to a fresh audience, so they just meandered a bit and put out what's honestly a basic anime opening episode.
Explosions, instant action, and sprinkles of lore dusted around it. Basic, but enough. Chapters 2 & 3 were garbage fires because the authors took off the kiddie gloves but still didn't have anything. It was like reading the rough draft of an essay. The ideas were all there but they were worse than unpolished; they were covered in the same dirt they were pulled out of and sloppily thrown onto the page.
chapter's 4 and onward really picked up because the authors actually started to polish the same ideas off and get into their grove. Which is why events that don't or can't rely on pre-established info, like Dossoloes holiday and Twilight of Wolumonde, were so great because the authors also got to focus more on the story. What was actually happening at the time, than simply making the plot a slave to the save the world plot.
I get what you're trying to say, but it feels like you're just condemning anyone who actually likes the Doctor romantically as shallow people while those who don't are automatically perceived and well-written(even though most of them are pretty bland and one-note even with their own variant of tragic story).
The characters are written so well that you can sympathize with them to the point that you want to go to terra just to help and cheer them up, nothing more nothing less.

I´ve been playing Arknights since November and I like that not all the characters fall in the harem category, cuz yeah we can see their selfs as individuals, but I must say that if we have some kind of "friendship" or some kind of "emotional" event from time to time, can be a breake of some heavy dark moments in the game, so much depression and sadness....
I mean I like the seriousnes of the game, the scars of the war showed in the game but I cannot be the only one that want to see your favorite operator in a relax time with you or interacting with other people to know them even better or, know what they think about previous events, hopes and dreams? or even what happens inside Rhodes Island.
The event of Gavial felt more like a vacation to me than Dossoles, and we could see the operator more like in a "normal day" of our world and I liked that.
But that wont stop me for loving Utage and the ops who answeder to my call at the gacha
I love the fact that Doctor is not written as a pure self-insertion. I love the realistically diverse spectrum of emotions and personalities from all the Operators too.
I'd like a in between for realistic and Harem. Like a system where you can only marry one operator and can only have a harem with the people they're ok with. (Example: Shining and Followers, Che'en and her girl squad, Chiave and gang, etc etc) should you cheat on them, their entire progress will be set to 0. As well as leveling and skills. Just to make the players suffer for being selfish and greedy. The system to romance can be a sorta choice style side story. Where various randomized choices are there for you and as the trust increases, the more the both of them fall in love with each other. Putting in that realistic effort for that harem esque love. Totally not saying this because I'm head over heels for Shining. Definitely not

But you have much more maybe and flirting in textlines that you mske it.

But given how crazy Nian family is, who knows.

Even lower star operators have their own goals and reasons for joining RI, they're not just a bunch of disposable mercenaries waiting to be deployed but they all have their own activities inside or outside RI's landship
AK stories might be hard for me to follow sometimes, but so many of them are really interesting that sometimes could even change my perception of the operators completely
Realistic always bring us to that "relatable" condition. Being able to relate to something make us can empathize for something in that particular thing. That's why i prefer more reaistic than just merely living in the dream

3:25 This is also one of my favorite things about Arknights. I guess one of the main reasons lies in the developer. Many japanese gachas exploit the harem protagonist trope too much, so it's very refreshing seeing a team like HG doing things in a more serious tone and with more of an international player base in mind (Yes, I know HG and Arknights are chinese, CN has been making really good stuff lately).
You know personally I would've preferred it if AK was a harem simulatio- nah I'm just fucking with you, this aspect of AK is probably one of the most refreshing approaches a Gacha game takes with this sort of thing. I'd be downright infuriated if they changed it.
To answer the question "realistic characters, or harem simulation", I say you can aim for both as long as the setting makes sense.
Take Azur Lane for example. On the surface, it may seem like mindless fanservice, but if you look into the lore you can actually see a pretty intense story setting. Humanity's besieged by this cosmic threat and their only hope is a similar breed of "monster", but because of all the similarities humanity fears them and won't hesitate to dispose of them once the fighting stops. Not only does this give the shipgirls a raw deal, it also kinda justifies why they all fall for Shikikan. He's the only one to treat them as real people. Not only does this create human emotions in them, but if he treats them well, it also encourages them to hold onto them, bringing them closer to thinking of themselves as people instead of weapons.
But yeah, in the case of Arknights, such an approach wouldn't work nearly as well.

To add onto that, Azur Lane also have different worlds to tell its story. There's the one where the factions are actively fighting to save the world, where the main story takes place, and the one where everything is peaceful where the fun/parody events, I would also include oathing, take place.

Albeit I am still more inclined to think they are 2 separate worlds/timelines since we know there are multiple timelines/worlds in Azur Lane, especially since many of the meme/parody events that happen just would not make sense in the scenario you mentioned

In my opinion. I believe grounded lore is much better. I'd like the feeling of being able to relate to the story and also realistic characters.
As a writer myself, Arknights has been my inspiration when it comes to writing. Arknights is just too compelling and the world building is so good. The characters themselves feels like actual characters and the issues inflicted upon the world of Arknights are relevant and affects one faction or another.
That's why even though the grind is a chore. I still kept playing to keep myself updated with the lore.
Can't wait for arknights to release a character that explicitly says the character loves us(doctor) and make this video obsolete

I think Roberta might be the strongest contender so far when she comes out depending on how they translate some of her story and lines. She is pretty openly affectionate towards the Doctor in several lines and her 150 affection archive reveals that she's been thinking about us this way for a while.
Even compared to Gravel, I think Roberta might be the one most into the Doctor.
I hate harem and i definitely like how Arknight just make each operator as a real person with problem that they need to take care off. But actually, on the other side, how Arknight develop a character, tell us their profile, and also add so many things that really describe their life is a good thing that allow us to create our own story with that character. This allow us very easily to create a non Canon story with that operator and still contains the true nature of that operator via our knowledge of their life in the profile and their problem in the game.
I think this quite a smartmove Actually. They allow us to understand the Character so much to the point that we can create our own story using a conflict surrounding them and give our viewpoint about that conflict. Also it gives us very very good chance to learn just through their profiles, heck even my friend sometimes create a non Canon story with his favourite operator and even know how his favorite one gonna respond. He even now understand more about the feeling of being around a big problem that another people face.( Simply his story is just him being an operator in Rhodes island working as a teacher for the infected kids in there and also take a research about the thing that happened to a child like ifrit case. he even give a viewpoint about the case and well even if there is not really romantic, because his favourite operator is Follinic, he can really look after many thing in her profile and make a good partner (romantic but i don't know why when i read it, it feels like iam reading a thesis of a research than a conversation 🤣)

I went into Arknights for lore and worldbuilding, not for waifu/husbando reasons. And my first event was Operational Intelligence. There, I met Patriot and W. And then we got Darknights Memouirs.
As well as W. I can't call her a waifu, but that dynamic between her and the Doctor. She is a call from the past, making us remember who we were. And with trust I hope she can one time actually forgive. Forget that hatred, accept the pain, and live on.
As a person you plays Azur Lane, there are 5 girls that are extremely (not even death do you apart will save you) into the commander, some are tsunderes, homies that question why pick them as your wife, sister figures that are happy to be your wife, aunts that would help you even without the ring and one mother that loves and cares for you that is shock that you will marry her when she already declared herself your mom.
Marriage can be weird in games with it as a mechanic.

I feel like arknights already has enough Characters that actually are interested on the Dokutah, and to exemplify that we have Blaze who has the best big sister energy i ever saw i would be real disappointed if out of nowhere this brotherly relationship she shows in game suddenly turned into romantic interest. The Dokutah may be too focused on (over)working but that will never stop us to shipp everyone they see. The player is just a parasite that the Dokutah has to deal with XD
The player is the side of the dokutah that comes out at 0 sanity. Selfish, lusting and wholly unconcerned with operators wants and needs.
This is what makes Arknights unique compared to other gacha games I played (I am looking at you Azur Lane). The fact that all of their characters have their own unique personalities and sticks to them with no oath/marriage system existing fits the serious tone that the game has. In a real situation you wouldn't be actively searching for a love interest when you have a literal company that is working on a cure for a worldwide disease and fighting against terrorists now would you? That is what I like about Arknights at times, they do not sacrifice or cut any corners when it comes to their story or add in an oath mechanic just so they can get some extra cash like most companies probably would. They stick to their morals and focus purely on how to make Arknights a good game. Kal'tsit may not be our actual ex-wife but the thought of it does make me chuckle a bit even as a joke for us dokutahs.
Some of the operators do show that they're interested in you, but doesn't openly express it. Which is realistic considering that they're working as colleagues and can't put their work before their feelings, especially in the world of Terra.
It's funny how harem simulator games also tend to destroy the personality of the character and their relationship with the player anyway. Marriage is supposed to symbolize how special your relationship is with the character, but you can just do it with every single character, and so they all stop being special. And it makes no sense for yandere characters to be okay with it!

I really do like that Arknights when compared to other Gachas is much more realistic and darker with it's tone. Like with other games that try to be like this, like FGO with the lostbelts, trying to give the player a sense of dread and question their morality as they supposedly genocide multple worlds, is quickly dashed aside as there are jokes, many girls wanting to get with the master, and the monthly event in where the player could get a brand new swimsuit Servant.
But Arknights, it never makes itself a joke, the world is pretty much a barren wasteland, with the only sources of safety are behemoth sized moving cities. People die when things go wrong, several of your operators are either suffering from depression, mental illness, and/or just not in the mood to party. And you, the player, or rather, The Doctor. Canonically is rutheless in the past, being a cold-hearted commander feared by all who knew him
EDIT: Though I wouldn't mind that more of the operators do develop more romantic feelings, or at the very least are much more closer and intimate with the Doctor, like a close friend/best bud. But it shouldn't be to the point where they blatantly love him

"Not a harem game" - but majority of characters are quite hot anime girls, in shorts, miniskirts etc.
If game was supouse to be realistic charactees should differ more in age (or at least appeqrance if life span is shorter for "plot reasons"), male:female ratio should be a lot closer to 50:50, and uniforms/armor of female characters should be less revealing.
Game appear like a harem game, but just decided to not implement romance mechanics (and so not monetize it). Realistical romance would be to complitacted to implement it in game - but I think that some romance option for single operator to unlock few lines without any in-game bonus (so nobody would oath multiple characters for skins and meta reasons like I did in Azur Lane) wouldn't be that bad.

I like the realism especially how each of the units don’t have their own identical 3 star, 4 star, 5 star, and 6 stars versions of themselves, they all remain the same unless they have skins. It gives off a satisfying feeling that you’re actually collecting different characters and you can invest in all of them. Love this game.
The realistic characters thing is definitely how it should be; Arknights shouldn't change that.

Basically. Yostar hasn't given up on World building, someone joining as an Operator doesn't mean they're gonna be involved with you. They might have interactions with the Doctor but most of them have their own purpose for joining Rhodes Island.

There is one character that does reveal her body to you when she trusts you, but best girl Mudrock aside, yes, I too prefer an actual story over a horni PNG waifu collection, I´ve been watching the Girl´s frontline anime and the designs of most of the characters are baffling, clearly more centered on appeal than sense, which is distracting from the dead serious tone the show goes for.

everyday I thank Arknights for not making their roster start having their genitals get wetter than a fat E1 on his first day of PT. I always preferred an actual serious paramilitary squad we control and command, fanon content is completely fine but part of me wants to see MK Ultra stuff in AK. this is kinda the reason why I've come to stick with Arknights. Sure a lot of people might like Eunectes for some very soft looking thighs. But I moreso want to help her understand how we do things outside of the jungle. That is just one operator example of course, but it also somewhat highlights why I don't care about Ash as an operator, sure she's great to have on the team but.. She just doesn't fit or add anything to the world, So I'd most likely much rather get to know someone like Platinum, BP, provence and so on, hell, I'm weirdly interested in learning more about Aosta even though most people seem to forget that he exists.
