    Wow this takes me back 40 years to high school. The Master locks looked exactly the same (though without the keyhole in back) but were easier to open -- in particular there was a technique for determining the 2nd number, and then checking all options for the 3rd. There was a special day early each year when some freshman would learn the technique and start showing his or her friends, "so then he did this, and then he did this, ..." at which point one could stride in, put a hand on the ringleader's shoulder, falsely declaim "HEY ASSHOLE THAT'S MY LOCKER!" and watch them scramble. Good times.

      Haha yeah, I imagine with TH-cam these days, there's a lot more kids pranking around with these cheap combo locks. I can't even give my kids a real lock because their school dictates which lock they use (and the key on the back means the maintenance crew doesn't need to cut the locks off at the end of the year)

    • @norlin76
      @norlin76 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Once a finger pin is set, it'll jiggle to spring tension, but feel like it has a hard stop at the top of the movement range...if you press to hard you can pop it out of the gate though. If you look for a binder and lift it but it never drops into a gate, you likely have the wrong rotation, so have to let off tension, try a different rotation and repeat.

    My Master 140 has 2 spring loaded latches, one at each shackle hole. They fit into notches in the shackle. With a hook pick, I am able to reach both latches through the keyhole, one at a time, and pull each one back. The problem is that I need both latches pulled back simultaneously before the lock will open. I might be able to hold them back using two hook picks, if I can fit two hook picks through the keyhole. However, I found a way to do it with one pick. I poke my hook pick deep into the keyhole and find a spring loaded part. If I am holding the lock with top of the keyway on top, when I lift it up with my hook pick, I am freeing the latch at the bottom. I push until it is free of the shackle. I pull the shackle out and keep pulling on it. This prevents the latch from falling back into the notch. Then I find the spring loaded latch that must be pushed down. When I push it down, the other latch is pulled out of the notch. With both latches free of the notches, the lock opens. The order in which the latches are pulled from the notches may be important, depending on lock tolerances. For learning, without pulling on the shackle, find both spring loaded latches first and practice moving them. If you can open the lock, practice moving the latch that is visible. With the lock open, the other latch doesn't move more than a small amount, so don't try to practice on it. It is easier to pull on the lock body with the lock locked to something. If the lock is loose, slip it over a hook that is securely held in place.

    • @norlin76
      @norlin76 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're describing a bypass method. On the American Lock 1100, they added a little plate at the back to stop a similar bypass, but older ones don't have it. You can buy a specialty tool designed to bypass somewhat similar to how you described, it's basically a right angle hook that you stick down the keyway and turn to interact with the locking pawl directly.

    • @jimlocke9320
      @jimlocke9320 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@norlin76 Agreed! This is a bypass method, not picking. However, it is a method of getting the lock open, which only works where the latches are accessible. Apparently, Master Lock's design engineers decided that the second latch would make it too difficult for this method to work, so they didn't do anything to keep tools from reaching the latches.

      Thanks! Definitely worth picking, it's a bit tricky getting used to feeling each wafer if you're only used to pins, well worth adding another skill under your belt.

      @@norlin76 does your Miwa DS give a tiny bit of rotation each time you set a Wafer?

      @@wolfganggrojcig2528 the physics of it is that even if the wafers have perfectly flat edges, because it's in a round lock, you'll get the tiniest counter rotation
