I quit smoking after 20+ years when I got diagnosed with cancer, and realized that smoking on my way to chemo was just insane. I started when I was 11, and never thought I could quit. It's been 16 years. Yay 🥳

I quit smoking cold turkey after fifteen years when I decided to have a family. (I loved smoking. I still miss it.) My addiction is poor eating and binge eating. I remember the moment I made eating my slow suicide -- "I don't even care if I die," I thought, twenty-one years ago when a major family loss happened and I started self-soothing with awful food choices. I believe in prayer and I believe healing is there for me, if I can accept it. I am so very tired. Thank you for sharing your story. xoxo

happy you found a way to overcome this addiction. .growing up as a city kid in the 1960s it wasn't unusual for a 9 year old to pick up this habit. Soon a two pack a day addiction for 27 years was taking a toll on my health. A diagnosis of cancer didn't phase me as a young father. getting released from hospital stays from radiation sickness couldn't get me to stop. I would tell family i would stop smoking 20 minutes after being cremated. I smoked my last cigarette on June 8th 1998 when my then 6 year old son confronted me and expressed his fear that i would die and leave him without a dad. I still consider myself a smoker. Ive just gone a long time between cigarettes. What works for me regarding addiction is to take one day at a time. I will never be able to say I've quit . I just make the decision that i am continuing to be in the process of quitting. It has worked every day since june 8th, 1998

This was the same for me and my family. We all quit smoking through this book. I smoked since I was 12 and had tried to stop so many times. I even had to try twice with this book! I was so addicted. Have had other addictions before and since, though smoking was definitely the worst. Also when I stopped smoking I got incredibly sick and became chronically ill with autoimmune disease. Have always wondered what that was about. Stopping smoking is one of the hardest things I've ever done.

I'll pray for ya. I don't usually pray but cigarettes are awful and quite addictive, so I'll send you some good vibes. If you feel like reaching for a cig, try and put your finger to your lips as if you were smoking, take a deep breath, and do a very slow whistle through your lips with your finger in front of you. Try to draw the whistle out as long as you can, and as it gets quieter, imagine the craving leaving your body. On Instagram I was stunned, to see they are selling a fancy whistle on a necklace to help people with anxiety. All it really does is give you a small hole to exhale through slowly so your breath is regulated outward to calm anxiety. I realized I already do this by exhaling slowly through my tongue pressed against my front teeth to make a high pitched squeaking noise when I'm annoyed. I make a game out of it to see how clearly I can make the high pitched squeak. I can work to calm you down. I've never smoked cigarettes but I've come close...so sorry if these tips don't work. I have friends who have quit though. But I've smoked weed once and it irritated and hurt my lungs so I decided I don't like smoking anything..

As hard as I tried... nothing I could do could have stopped me from smoking. 37 years. Then one day while trying to convince my mother that I am an adult who is separate from her, it hit me.
Mother "allowed" me to smoke when I was in high school as a form of controlled rebellion. She used my smoking to justify her smoking again after many years of being quit, which then justified my father to restart smoking as well.
I realized at the moment all these memory fragments were falling into place, that my mother has secretly wanted me dead since I was born or shortly thereafter. Kids smoking, (even a child can figure out) was just a symptom of a negligent parent that a) doesn't care or b) actively participates in subverting their children's development. It is apparent, I was just the reason they needed to do what they wanted to do.
Its, been 2 months. Not even tempted alittle. I'm free. She isn't.
Since our relationship has turned from (delusional?) love in to concrete abhorrence over the last 3 years, and she refuses to admit any wrong doing ever, I feel she can suck it. And another.
It's a hard thing to realize your mother and father have offered no real tangible, practical protection ever. Not from the system. Not from each other. Everything they ever did was an act for others to judge. Nothing was ever "for" me. If they said it was, that was their way of letting you know who was going to be pulling your strings.

For my brain to heal from generational CPTSD we have been using EMDR and installing the images of IDEAL parents and it's been quite healing as I can now grasp that I would have felt loved and wanted and worthy with IDEAL parents. I grasped my current beliefs were "learned responses". In the same way, you have experienced trauma in a spiritual, "religious" context and have formed beliefs and conclusions from that trauma. Perfectly normal. However, Does your experience mean you don't need a relationship with your IDEAL Creator who made the planet, universe, and animals and food and more? I’m still not sure what words to use for what I believe in, but my whole life since childhood, every now and then I’ve been turning towards a ‘higher power’ in my most desperate moments. I was very suicidal growing up, and praying always helped me keep going. However small, something always happened to help me keep going. I never dared to keep praying regularly, though. Now looking back I think I just couldn’t let myself feel worthy enough for any kind of protection or having feelings of hope. I’m really happy to have started wondering about the spiritual part of myself and my life again lately, the world can be so much more beautiful when you open yourself up to things where you’re true to yourself and explore what you feel drawn to and connected with. I’m still struggling badly with binge eating and really terrible eating habits that I always fall back on to fill the emptiness inside me from childhood trauma, but I know a change is going to come soon. There's a book by Carr titled "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking" that pointed this out. Made me so mad that an addiction was controlling my life. Went cold turkey - thought I was going to die for the first 3 days - literally. On the 4th day, and since then, I didn't want to ever go through that withdrawal again. After 21 days, so much better. I dealt with similar sentiments in my family growing up. If you can't explain yourself through logic and reason, then you should be mocked. Religion and faith was ridiculed. Now as an adult, I still struggle to connect with my divine guidance due to internalized shame. Intellectualizing is a common defense mechanism in my family of origin.
I also relate to feeling ambivalent towards my future/life, so in the moment, it's much easier to continue to participate in harmful habits like smoking. Myself and some of my clients have admitted to regrets later, because we're certain we did a lot of harm to our bodies when we were younger. The persistent harm of childhood abuse and neglect is awful- it really makes you question what's the point of persevering subconsciously or consciously. First time in my life as a smoker (qutting and falling back all the time ) that I really easy could quit and stay that way was after a prayer. Im still free after many years since that sincere prayer. I was suprised myself, it felt like a miracle the craving was gone!

I can so much relat to the feelings, the anger, the loneliness and the need for space. I had so many attempts to stop smoking without success. I felt so disgusted by myself. And then I started to pray and meditate to have the strength to face the fear, anger, sadness that I regulated with smoking. Once I could really name and feel those feelings the desire to smoke was gone.

I love your honesty Anna - it's so helpful to me!!!! I've been doing the Daily Practice for almost 2 weeks now and it's so cool and I'll never stop again. I was resisting it - like really? "I already do guided meditation, I don't need that, how boring, I don't have time, I"m too smart, I'm too sophisticated...." I needed it!!!!!! I was stuck and repeating frustrating people pleasing and getting angry again and paranoid, etc. I don't know where this is all leading but it is wonderful and I'm feeling peace and I'm giving up control and THANK YOU!!! With love, Linda

Anna, I appreciate you sharing your journey - you are lovely and soft towards us who struggle and I so appreciate that. But for those who aren't there on the spiritual side, it is possible to just quit in the physical. Here's my story (2002): I quit cold turkey 3.5 months ago - no spirituality involved. I enjoyed smoking and never really wanted to quit until I got up to one pack/day and realized that I didn't want to die from it. Nicotine is a very effective drug for just-ever-so-slightly dulling emotional inputs; that is, when I smoked, I could more easily overlook all the junk of negative and dysfunctional people I encounter (seems more so now in the U.S. than ever before) - seeing "their stuff" as their stuff and just allowing it to be without reacting. However, when I quit, that buffer was instantly gone and I was shocked at how raw life really was and how reactive I was to mean people, gossipy people, rude people, narcissists, rampantly-political people, etc. In order to not have people triggering me, I had to take a break, as much as possible, from all B.S. I avoided toxic and mean people both in person and online. Now a few months later, I can, again, not internalize other people's junk and allow it to trigger me. Sometimes, I still want to smoke - but not in a craving sense (more like "I'd sure like a hamburger today"). I always enjoyed smoking and never had a recurrent desire to quit - I just enjoyed it. But I realize that I have an addiction to it so casually smoking is something I cannot do.

Anna thank you so much for sharing your story. I remember myself going inside of the church and asking God to save me from PTSD behaviour that was destroying me and there was no other hope rather than for God.
Even though I was a Muslim at that time but I always knew that God speaks in all languages and is everywhere where we can connect with Him.
I cried a lot and loneliness was making me feel even worse.
But I am here and now I only have an obesity problem that I cannot control and you showed me the way I can heal myself.

Your story has inspired me to quit again, except this time I’m getting extremely honest with myself and developing a spiritual practice. I quit smoking for years and after getting really angry with my religion and becoming bitter, I picked up smoking again. I’ve been lying to myself about a lot in regards to smoking. I even justified my smoking by thinking of older people in my family who smoke and tell myself well they’re still alive 😭 I just discovered your channel last night and I will go through your videos for education because I seriously need help with sorting things out in my life. Its so interesting to me that i happened upon this today. Thanks to you infinitely for your channel, sharing your experiences, love and authenticity. I hope you remember and realize each and every day how many people you are helping and how grateful we are. This morning i did the daily practice for the first time and after honestly asking for release from the "things" i wondered if the practice would lead me to quit smoking. So when i happened upon this...thank you for your story and your courage! I wont say, this is it, im done smoking as i don't trust myself and that feels way to heavy at this time. Im 65 years and learning there is a word for my "wierd sensations & checking out' is transforming my life! I don't like to go into my trauma which began around three years and was my very first memory. i have created so much trauma all on my own throughout my life. At times i feel ok, this is it, i understand i can move on easily, i find nope thats not the way it goes. I could beling to quite a few twelve step programs, and have found them very useful and liberating in the past. I can't physically get to one at this time, once i can i think i will. Your channel is so much more on point than any therapy i have ever experienced and there have been plenty! 😅 i see myself in so many of your videos and often feel shame for some of my poor behaviors. I have experienced so so many similar things as you & your writers have. We are all in a club that noone would ever join knowingly! The part that kills me is all the pain i accidentally put upon others. I hope and will pray for direction for others that need you so badly
Some of the behaviors you have made note of absolutely blow me away when you define the true meaning behind them!!! Once again shame & even disbelief i always felt that somehow my smoking was linked to my childhood trama. It really felt absolutely necessary and i couldn't see my life without smoking
I see in no uncertain terms that i use it to regulate - that is life-changing!!! Once again thank you for all that you have made available for so many of us. You have my gratitude beyond measure, i can see how you are changing my life for the better. I wish you riches beyond your wildest dreams and good health to enjoy all of it. Anna, Im not just happy for you, I'm so very PROUD OF YOU! 🫂❤️

Thanks Anna. You never cease to amaze me with your transparency. I quit smoking in 1998 after trying several times over 25 years, including a stop smoking course for women a therapist conducted that was finally effective. Hypnosis worked fabulously, except both times I did it, made the mistake of going to a bar and having a drink and thinking I could have just one smoke after having quit for a year. Less that a week later, both times, I was back to my pack-a-day. I know the struggle and very much appreciate the spiritual method you describe. I can now apply those spiritual principles to other addictions, mostly addictions of thought loops and anxiety. 🌹

I'm a believer and have been praying but true to cptsd form, not for my smoking habit and am going to start praying for that, thank you for all you do for us, these are my people and your work is loving on them, thank you and thank God for your resources and efforts helping us understand and heal.

Try not to care so much about people who judge you - they clearly don't care much - and find people who accept you for who you are and extend the grace we all need. The human judges have a judging habit, pride, they need to be cured of. They're no better than you. Be kind to yourself.

I am a fan and subscriber of your channel. I almost skipped this one b/c I have never smoked/never had the desire to smoke/am grossed out by cig smoke, however, I'm so glad I listened to the entire story. As I was calculating your 40 -50 cigs a day into the 16 hours you're awake I was horrified for you and then quickly realized that I make 40 trips to the fridge and pantry daily (mostly in the evenings) looking for snacks to quell my anxiety. A lot of my early trauma was due to being a literal 'captive' in a very harmful, abusive religious cult. I can't get over how much your story you related here is like mine - a spiritual awakening at 11 years old (which was later exploited by religious abusers), addiction to tobacco (which I'm still trying to shake), & coming down with Graves Disease (which I'm still sick with, in spite of having my thyroid out - probably coz I'm still smoking). I have said so many 1000's of desperate prayers for help that nowadays my prayers are just angry "Why the f**k don't you help me, when I've been pleading for help for decades?!" prayers. I'm really at my total wits end. I wish prayer worked for me like it did for you. I'm chronically ill, all alone, & so broke I haven't even been able to afford to take your 'regulation boot camp' (which I'm hoping to be able to afford soon). Thanks for sharing. It brought me to tears just feeling understood.

I went thru the same stages. But I found when I took a long time to pray, and slowly..maybe in the bath..I just Talk..to Jesus and that becomes my prayer. That works better. I know if you are overwhelmed with issues it can be hard but I hope you can try this. Asl for Angel's too. Angels of kindness and with your best interests at heart.

Not to diminish anyone's experience but just because prayer can work to focus an individual's consciousness around a desired personal change absolutely doesn't mean there is a God who will actually intervene to produce that change.
Truly love your content and will not even consider unsubscribing! ❤

100% spot on. The good news for the non-religious is that whatever belief structure is attributed, Anna achieved this completely on her own.
Silly to insist that there's a deity out there who listens and answers one person's prayer (to stop smoking for instance) and completely ignores millions of others dying of abuse, disease and starvation. It's not mysterious ways - it's false attribution.
Interesting that wherever you are born on the planet, the local religion is the 'true' one.

I quit smoking cold turkey when I saw the positive pregnancy test (day of my missed period, so very early). The ways I tried to quit smoking before that were hilarious. I usually smoked 15 per day. Once I intentionally made myself sick by chain smoking all day, I was sick for a couple of weeks and stopped smoking for a few months. I would put all my cigarette butts in a jar with water, put in the sun, and whenever I had a craving I would sniff the nasty "cig tea". That helped for a bit. I quit for my unborn baby and cigarettes smelled terrible to me when I was pregnant. Once I quit for the duration of my pregnancy, cravings were gone. Smoking is also a great way to get out of uncomfortable conversations or to self-isolate.

It’s interesting that your highest fear (if I understood properly from the different videos) was to say publicly your story, to be honest and “real yourself”. But, if you see comments, you can actually find that most people appreciate exactly that, your honesty. Isn’t it interesting? It looks like sometimes our fears hide our strength and road to healing and well-being. It’s great to have you Ana, thank you 💕
