Mr Hatch, the last time I drag raced was in early 70’s at Tenora Dragways in Comberland Wis. Had a 70 nova with 396 in it. Ran 12.90 at 110 mph. Drove it 200 miles to get there, raced and went home. Watching your video brought back memories long forgotten. Thank you for posting 😺
No matter how fast you go, its fun to go drag racing. My first pass down a dragstrip was in 1987, my 79 TA ran a 14.71 for its best ET. I bracket raced all through the late 90s in my 79 Formula that ran mid 11s, then life happened and my last pass was in 2005. 2021 was the first year since 05 that I have been able to build something to go racing again. It should be done and able to pass tech now, if I can get it running right. Ran out of time last year to test and tune it around here, but it has plates and insurance so I can drive it legally... sorta. Being away has not been fun, once you have the bug it usually sticks with you. I am building some other stuff to go racing too, low buck fun machines from junk I picked up over the years. Stuff an engine in and see what it runs. Thats the best part of living, at least to me.
Good job. It's great when the whole family is involved. That first run looked good to bad that carb crapped out. Put a little 600 holley on it and mess with the timing. Would be cool to run 15 flat without going into the engine.
From out of the brush pile and onto the starting line, yeah that's a victory for any racer. Salute!!!!! Nothing fell off the car , you didn't oil the track down. and you didn't drive into anything, I'm sure the track personal and the other racers were glad you came and brought the family. If you have any engine machine shops local, it doesn't hurt to give them a call and see what they have lying around collecting dust that they would like to get rid of for cheap.
"Smiles all around" great job on the car. You got the bug now! I'm looking forward to the upgrades to make it faster! Great to see all the family members in on the fun!!
Congratulations man! I'm 54 years old and have been a mechanic my entire adult life. I've never gone down the track myself either. It's been my dream since I was 16 and it has slipped by me... You did good!
How about my 72 Nova in 92 it was a roller without a rear end, I paid $800 for it. it I put in a 355cid with a Powerglide transmission out of my 66 c10 and borrowed a 2:72 10 bolt rear end from my brother and it made the old car run a 15:57 ET 😮 I was running right with the Mustang GT's but couldn't outrun them, so I bought a 4:56 rear end from a buddy and we went it to the track and ran a fast 13:13 ET I was happy because I finally was outrunning the Mustang GT's, then we had a need for speed 😅 we built a 383 Stroker and purchased a 4500+ TCI stall converter and we ran a whopping 11:40 just eliminating the 12-second all together 😅
Hatch I’m proud of you and you and your family. Any day you drive it back on the trailer and not push it , it’s a win man. I had a 69 Nova drag car I started out like yours on the cheap
If that Nova is just for racing, Put a 2 speed glide in it. Guys Back In 1975 My older friend jay Owned a 68 chevelle, with 307,I was going 15 years old, He new I worked on Motors, asked me to rebuild his 307, I I file fit the rings, Put a set of Power pack heads Ported, with a Comp cam he bought, At Lebanon Valley, race way, He ran 118mph at 12.2 Not bad for a 307, with a 650 double pumper, and a 12 bolt 373 single leg.
My brother roll bar, please. Ladder bars old school. Welded with 3/4 bar like a train tressal. I did 10.2 with a 70 nova 396 polished and blue printed. 411 rear gears. B/M slap shifter. I miss it. Thank you
I had a 76 Nova SS that had a 307 2 barrel, I made a best pass of 10:86 in the 1/8th and wanted nothing more than to go faster and faster. Good luck and keep building on it, great start already!!
congrats brother i’m jealous for sure! the important thing is it still runs, not dead at all carb rebuild or upgrade and get right back out there please keep the content coming
Does this mean the car is getting an intake and a proper carb?? And I loved your comments about doing it with friends and family. That’s what these cars are: a catalyst for adventure with those we love
Powerglide one shift simple consistency!👍👍 I’ve run one in my 78 Malibu for years and love it, I’m working on a 71 nova now that I just acquired and that’s what I’m going to put in that as well.
I love to see guys like you succeed in the drag race game !!! I spent many a years at Atco Raceway in jersey and ran about 3 separate occasions at Island beside the old sod farm !!!! My 1st pass ever was a 16.82 with all kinds of problems !! After time and tons of money my best pass was a 10.62 @ 125 mph with 560 hp in my 73 Vega !!! It came from a bone stock Vega with a bone stock 400 and a 350 turbo out of the junkyard to a full fledged drag car 28,000$ later !!!! The only thing left stock was the body !!! From 16.80 to 13.99 to 12.90s to 12.50s to 12.0s to 11.50s to 11.0s to 10.60s then had enough from 22 y o to 50 y o !!! Just simply burned out on it but still miss it !!!!! Be patient and stay hungry and it will grow steady and right without cutting corners and over thinking it !!!! I am 61 now and would love to help you any way I could !!!! Please if you would give me all the specs for that diamond in the rough that you have now so I can see your combination and help you with suggestions !!!! I would be honored to help you and believe I could !!! I was always good at cheap but effective combinations tht truly work !!!! You don't want bigger just a viable partnership from front to back !!! Just 1 example : ( 1st question is this street or track only) probably an 8.2 or 8.5 10 bolt rear !! 4.10 gear a mini spool which work well if ypur on track only !! If street you want a posi unit ! Posi unit 200 - 300$ or more for posi unit about 60 - 80 for a mini spool which are very strong pieces !! A simple set of universal traction bars and you"ll be close to the 14s just with that simple change !!! In this situation taken care of used stuff will work !! I wish all the luck and success in the world for your awesome blast from the past never duplicated Nova !!!!! If I over stepped my bounds I am sorry please tell me to back off !! I just have an intense passion for this stuff and love to help others with their projects !!! Makes me feel alive again !!!
Wow, 15.91 a lot more gooder than I thought it would be, good job. That must have a different cam in it than a factory 307 cam? Those use to wear down to where the valves barely open. That with the low compression those had from the factory really gave them a bad reputation. My guess was low 17s to high 16s, that thing definitely has an aftermarket cam, probably?😎👍
Nothing wrong with 16s... at least you are doing it.... spend the cash on a new carb.. they are cheap and it will make a massive difference.. 30+ year old ones have worn shafts and shit... And people can send the mopar stuff to me :)
I go to island often, hopefully be there tm. I got a nova Ive put together with left over parts. Maybe we can link up for a video and Ill bring some parts to get that car going faster!
Dude why are you messing around with that 2 barrel carb? lol A SBC 4 barrel intake will cost you close to nothing and you can get a decent Holley on the cheap cheap. Everyone and their mom has one sitting in their garage. Or better yet, hit up the Carlisle Spring swap meet in April there's always SBC stuff.
Sorry if it’s been asked before, what are your wheel brand and specs? I’m looking to do wide rears on my 78 c10 and can only find oem style recommendations
I’m sorry if you felt we were “bragging” about the 15 second pass in the car. We were very excited from our accomplishment of building a car from nothing as cheaply as we possibly could and running faster then we believed it would go. We knew the car would not be a rocket ship with this driveline but with with these passes we now have a baseline e.t. that we can improve upon.
This is the way to do it. Take junk nobody wants and turn it into something useful, fun, and enjoyable, without throwing a ton of money at it. Along with the fact that it would get an engine, transmission, set of headers, set of wheels, and some other stuff out of the shop, and it would make another car a driver, you have prompted me to drag my 72 Ventura in the shop and stuff a 400 Pontiac in it. Probably a 2004R behind that, if I ever want to put other engines in like an LS or sbc to show how much slower they are than a mild Pontiac.. lol.
and it was at that moment his bank account would never be in the positive again..
cheers from Australia 🍻🤘
Uuu she said it!!!! ❤ new parts coming 💯😂 69 nova n C10- 73 Camaro showing love from Bakersfield Ca
Congratulations man. What a rush of adrenaline.Memory that you all will never forget.👍
Watched it twice. I smiled so hard the first time my eyes were closed! Just Awesome!!!!

Always a good feeling when the wife gets excited about drag racing. Congrats!
It's all about having fun! Congrats!!!
You got the fever for the flavor now! 😜
Hell yeah!!! I went drag racing for the first time last year at 38 years old. I had a blast in my slow @$$ thunderbird

Last year was my 1st. Run down a track with my car. I know what you were feeling, ran 3 passes an had a blast. Looking forward to this season.
From out of the brush pile and onto the starting line, yeah that's a victory for any

Awesome to see where the car was to now! Now its time for a edelbrock intake along with four barrel!
Congratulations man! I'm 54 years old and have been a mechanic my entire adult life. I've never gone down the track myself either. It's been my dream since I was 16 and it has slipped by me...
You did good!
@jeffallen3382- You can go on a test and tune day, and just run your daily driver vehicle, or whatever you have, its a blast! I hope you do this!?

The first time I went down the 1/4 I went 13.29 @99. It felt like a rocket ship, lol
This was one fun video to watch. Congrats!
That's what it's about man family fun

15.9 on a clapped out 307 with a dualjet ain't half bad for a start!
My brother roll bar, please. Ladder bars old school. Welded with 3/4 bar like a train tressal. I did 10.2 with a 70 nova 396 polished and blue printed. 411 rear gears. B/M slap shifter. I miss it. Thank you

Drag racing is addicting!
Hey I saw this at Island raceway!
Very cool bro. Intake and carb in the future. Awesome aero shoots.
That’s RAD!!! Keep it up!
Powerglide one shift simple consistency!👍👍 I’ve run one in my 78 Malibu for years and love it, I’m working on a 71 nova now that I just acquired and that’s what I’m going to put in that as well.

I agree lol
Island dragway is awesome

1:45 With a stock 307, I'll be impressed if it runs in the 14's. In the 1/4, not the 8th! 😂
Good times ...
people give boats away. you could get yourself a big block cheap

Wow, fFuwl injection Cam
Well done! You need to go faster.

Wife ok'd more money? She's a keeper

A 15 sec quarter isn't anything to brag about
