    Hi all :)
John put a great video to learn
Some of the questions maybe i can answer to help him :)
can u use home sewing machine ? NO
for just the fabric - yes but u adding clear windows + fabric
in some point u end up with 4 layers of fabric and the clear
    u need a industrial machine.
They are very fast that`s why Jonh looks like going fast.
i owned a pfaff industrial sewing machine and i sold it after 1 month .
this machine was too fast for (as beginner)
then i bought few home sewing machines which i sold also.
    Why ?? - the tension
in home sewing machine u can use only up to b69 thread witch not a good idea for boat canvas or enclosures
u need at least b92 of which ur machine won`t take and size 20-21 needle and a walking foot
without walking foot the fabric and the clear windows will pucker
the tape he is using is called double sided tape
now i owned a sewing machine ( portable ) which i just love
    cost almost $1000 cdn
but im in full control on it
took me some time to learn but was worth it
i refused to pay fabricator $3500 just for cockpit enclosure
    $2500 for flybridge cover
the i want to make windows cover $ ???
    i want to make a cabin curtains $ ??
i want to reupholster my cabin sofa $ ???
    that`s why i was learning :)
take a lot of scrap of fabric and sew and sew until u can sew very straight stitch :)
if u can`t - the fabric and window will pucker - trust me
sorry for the long post , just trying to help

No, no no! love your instructions. Still, I wonder if I can really make one by myself. Mine is a 36foot Mainship, the store asked for $10,000 CAD. Thank you so much.

do you always work this fast? or was it for the purpose of keeping the time limited for video...
I mean you are flying right through this project!!

I didn't see you do any reversing at the ends of the fabric and zippers. Don't you have to do that? I'm trying to build a cockpit cover for my Piper Cherokee. Your videos really help.

Thanks for the videos they were a big help. I am new in this business. I have a customer that wants to change the brown side curtains to black. This is off a older 35ft Sea Ray, It is covered up for the winter ( Up State NY ) I am not sure on how to approach this job. Should I make new? Can I copy the old for size? Yes they do fit the boat. Can I go over the brown with black? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank Ron

Thanks for the info, I have a Consew Industrial Machine and have done a little furniture recovering, but that isn't that much money in it like doing canvas tops and I have not really had any previous training except for what I have learned on my own.

Sure you can Mr K. You can use cheep heavy vinyl or you can use top gun. Anything strong to keep the snaps from pulling out. If you are trying to make the inside clean folding a 4" piece of sunbrella in half and sew the fold edge and bind the raw edge.

how did u reinforce the sunbrella fabric for snaps installation ??
i noticed that it is (bottom of the panel ) single layer of sunbrella fabric reinforced and binding
im planning to use top gun as reinforcement
do i have to fold the sunbrella or just 1-2 layers of top gun and bind along the edge
im trying to make my cockpit enclosure where is a hard top

wish you had said what the name of the product and where to get, as you use it. RE: transfer tape and tracing film. I'm sure you know the tape that isn't the one that won't come off etc., from experience. Now I have to go thru all the comments until I find someone that asked my question. They are talking about all kinds of different things. Never the less, glad I found you.

I purchased a sailrite ultra feed from salrite. Best investment ever. I have had many people come to me wanting me to make cockpit cushions and replace their existing cushions. I was thinking about doing it as a side business but I am unsure how to get materials at a discount cost for business. Any suggestions?

HI John, We are using the thickest version of strataglass and are finding it very hard to cut. Any suggestions on how to cut the strataglass when we've sewn in the zippers? When you cut the clear the scissors seem to just glide through. Not with strataglass. What can you suggest? Thanks, Annie

I believe it's called Dura Skrim patterning material. It's basically a clear version of poly tarp with a tighter weave by using a thinner warp and weft

I noticed your thread breaking a few times, If you bought Feet off the internet for your machine the hole for the needle to pass thru may not have been deburred and may have a sharp edge on it. I've bought a number of feet that the manufacture just drilled the hole and didn't smooth the hole so it is thread friendly. Those being harden steel you need a diamond tip dremel and sand paper glued to a toothpick to get it smooth enough that the thread doesn't break when you pull on it. You are super fast. Thumbs up to ya

Hey Dan, $350 sounds kinda cheep. If the machine is old I would say don't buy it. You can get a good walking foot machine for around $1000.00. If your goal is to make boat canvas you do not need a zig zag machine a straight stitch works better. The feed dogs "look that up" hold the fabric on a straight stitch much better. Not to mention the arm length, look up consew or seiko. They are reasonably priced and work great. I use a consew 255rb3 and a seiko 206. Both have strong walking feet and large bobbins.
