After seeing all of the repetitive copycats in the quadcopter market, it's nice to see some like Parrot are willing to do something different. Great video!

When I initially saw it, I thought it was some sort of star wars knock off toy. I'm thoroughly impressed how actually innovative this machine is.
I just got one last week from my LHS that was used. Has a broken wing support. 60$ with the flypad. Fixed it with a little carbon fiber rod.
It is a very cool RC indeed. VERY fun and stable. But if you have bats, anywhere near your house, don't fly this at dusk...hahaha. With the looks and the sound of the sonar it uses they WILL screw with it. Makes a very interesting flight for sure...lol
I've had bats chase my RCs before too! Pretty neat when that happens. :)
You often come up with some of the most off-the-wall things to test, and I love it !! You always treat every review the same, giving actual information, whether it's a "serious" product or something totally wacky (spinning TMNT, lol). This one's hard to peg; seems like a lot of fun to fly in various modes, a whole lot of the family could fly it, fly it anywhere, but whew that price. Anyway, great review... Thanks !!
Haha thanks! That is exactly my plan.... try to cover a bit of everything, and approach it all with the same level of thoroughness and information. :) This really is a fun model, but yeah, Parrot products are expensive (probably a lot of money goes into R&D, and they are also a French company, so it's not the typical cheap Chinese brands that I often review. Give it some time and the price will likely come down. The Rolling Spider, which I reviewed a long time ago, started out at $150, but I think you can get it for under $100 now.

I got this quad/plane for Christmas and I am super impressed with it. It controls slightly different from other quads and planes but it takes no time to get used to the controls. It flies so great even with a little bit of wind. It's pretty rugged too since I crashed it a couple times and had no damage. Now I wish I had more batteries for it. That's maybe my only complaint is that it uses a proprietary battery.
Anyway, thanks for your review. That's what got me interested in getting it and I don't regret it one bit. It's really great.
Glad you like it! If you consider any other Parrot "Mini Drones", they use the same battery, so at least you can have a few different models to use with the battery(s).

thepickle stick a fuselage on the front, and you have an X-Wing. Alternatively, stick a couple tails on twin-booms on the back, and you have an X-83 Twin Tail, which in the expanded universe was a development of the X-Wing

Cool flyer its good that this one is able to fly outside i know the parrot mini drone may have had fly away issues so i never took mine outside cool transmitter too i might have to look into this one, good review
10 out of 10 for the video and level of detailed explanation , but I'm not sure if I like this machine as much as a "regular" quad . Still get a thumbs up for the work you put into this video !

Hi Ryan, I bought myself a parrot mambo. I opened it last night I've only flown with the flypad. It is a very nice quad you would like it it's steady as a rock! I would recommend checking it out. Thanks Rich
I just bought one. I haven flown it yet but your videos give me confidence.
It is actually quite easy to fly... just make sure to do it on a low-wind day.

My thoughts exactly! lol Well, that hydrofoil thing looks pretty cool too, but I was too afraid to try it in a lake with the sort of wind conditions I get here. Seems like it would really only work in a pool under very calm conditions.

I got one of these after seeing your video on RCGroups, which I understand you no longer visit. I have to say, I absolutely love th thing. It's a blast to fly, and works wonderfully. I also think that the controller with it is top notch...it feels great in the hand, seems well built, and just works great. Thanks for the video!

That thing looks quite impressive, but just isn't the sort of thing I'd have much time and space to fly, so not something that I'll be able to review. My buddy Dustin Dunnill reviewed it though, and he was flying in the clouds with it! :O

Hey Ryan-just to let you know-if it is the same battery that is used in the rolling spider, then a multi-battery charger can be purchased. It can charge up to 4 batteries at a time. I have one, and it works great! You might want to try it. It sure beats having to use the drone to charge the batteries. I bought it off of Amazon with a couple of spare batteries themselves.

Picked one up for 40$ and love it so easy to fly.
I can't get mine to connect to bluetooth at all, and for some reason mine just jerks around crazy when I tried it a few times. I'd barely move the stick to go forward, and then it would just jerk in a random direction... almost like it was over correcting itself wildly. It's almost impossible to fly, even indoors with zero wind.
I must be doing something wrong, idk.. my second drone ever and I'm probably not buying another lol maybe it just isn't for me.

I was not sure about this one until i watched your video. The area at my house is shall we say busy. This would be perfect for my limited area. you should see me flying my yuneec q500+ here lol. I wish it had a few more leds on it for night flying, whats its lift capacity like? Does it have a decent punch out? even if I could just add 8 small leds to each wing top and bottom it would be great.
I think it should be capable of carrying some LEDs. :)

Hey Ryan, glad to see your review. I'm assuming the answer will be a No since you're always thorough but when in plane mode can you loop or roll?
You know, I'm not sure. I saw mention of that when I was gathering the Amazon link to put in the video description, but I swear I saw no mention of it in the app or manual, etc. I will have to check again, and if loops and rolls are possible (as the Amazon listing claims), I will have to do another flight video of that. :) If they are possible, they are almost certainly done with the buttons on the controller, since there would be no way to do them manually with all the stabilization features this thing has.

Small correction: when using the controller only it will vibrate to tell you the copter battery is low. So there is actually a warning.

Hard to say exactly. It does seem to handle wind better than you might expect though. Maybe 7-10mph?

Gut it, drop in a good setup, and some brushless motors, and you might have a pretty fun flyer.
LOL, no way. Brushless motors would be absolute overkill in a model like this. This thing is plenty of fun as it is... not sure how brushless motors would make it any more fun. I think some people just get hung up on that catch word, and think that brushless is always better, and I think that's silly.

Hmm, I don't know what to make of that, and I don't know anything about Android phones. You may need to try contacting Parrot customer support and see if they can help.

I had one for last 2 months. I have to say this is a really fun drone this. The quality is nice but a bit fragile however no camera.
I have no problem with it not having a camera though... this is by no means the sort of aerial vehicle you want to try filming from.

Thanks Ryan. I enjoy flying quadcopters and I'm thinking about getting into airplanes (or wings). Would you say this would be a good inexpensive intro to flying wings? I know it's not exactly the same as a airplane or wing, but could it be a good intro?
I think this would be a good start, since it will get you familiar with flying something that always moves forward, but then also give you the easy ability to bail out and go back to a quadcopter form like you are familiar with. Flying wings are a handful! So I would definitely suggest a lot of experience with standard 3ch, and then 4ch, airplanes before moving on to wings.

I crashed mine 32 feet in the air and it got stuck for 3 days up there, now when I try to use it the props are pushing air up instead of down the thing can't even take off. What do I do?!?!?

Is it possible to do loops with it in plane mode? Will they release pre Programmed flip buttons in future updates? Anyway nice review.
I don't recall seeing anything about loops or rolls while testing this, but when I went to get the Amazon link for my video description, their listing did mention being able to do that. So, I will have to reinvestigate that and release another "stunt" flight video if so. It would have to be done via the buttons, since it would be impossible to manually loop or roll this thing because of all the stabilization systems.
It's a great drone but I have already broken a prop. I can't find instructions anywhere on how to change them, are they just pressure fitted?
Yep, just pull or pry it off. And be sure to replace it with a prop that has the same pitch as the one you're replacing.
What's the max speed of it?
So all that on screen in the start of the video, is all you get just in the box or do you have to buy the central drone

i got this for xmas - took it outside and was testing it (fully charged) - suddenly bout 3 minutes into using it it fell to the ground and broke a propeller - ive carefully replaced the propeller but now when i turn it on it doesn't want to rise straight up but rather fly in a forward direction which it wont do successfully from take off - can anyone tell me why this would be? ive tried resetting in the app on the ph but no luck. wings and propellers are all visibly fine, etc...

Yep! It really is quite impressive. The Swing even holds a hover well in a breeze.

Definitely not. Way too heavy.
Fascinating at first, but I feel I would tire of it quickly with the plane doing it's own takeoffs, landings and controlling altitude. It's more like driving a car than flying a plane if you get too much help. I definitely prefer flying myself. Great job with the review.

you can get a separate charger on ebay for less than 5 bucks...it will charge up to 4 batteries at a time...i also just got a aftermarket 650mah battery from wal mart with free shipping for 5.99
